Zechariah 6

Four chariots

6 Again I looked up and I saw four chariots! They came out from between two mountains and the mountains were mountains of shining metal! 2 The first chariot had red horses and the second chariot had black horses. 3 The third chariot had white horses and the fourth chariot had grey horses. All the horses were strong. 4 Then I spoke to the angel that talked to me. I asked him, ‘What are these chariots, my lord?’

5 The angel answered me, ‘These are the four spirits of heaven. They have come from the Lord of the whole world. 6 The chariot with the black horses goes towards the north country. The chariot with the white horses goes after them. The chariot with the grey horses goes towards the south country.’

7 When the strong horses came out, they were in a hurry to leave. The angel said, ‘Go through all the earth.’ So the horses went through all the earth.

8 Then the Lord told me, ‘The chariot that goes to the north country has caused my Spirit to rest in the north country. I am now no longer angry about the north country.’

A crown for Joshua

9 The Lord spoke to me.

10 ‘Three men have arrived from Babylon,’ he said. ‘Their names are Heldai, Tobijah and Jedaiah. Take the gold that they have brought with them. On the same day, take the gold to the house of Josiah, the son of Zephaniah.

11 Take the gold and other valuable metal and make a crown. Put it on the head of Joshua the most important priest. He is the son of Jehozadak. 12 Say to Joshua, “The Lord Almighty says, ‘I have chosen a man. His name is the Branch. He will be a great man and he will build the house of the Lord .

13 It is he who will build the house of the Lord . He will sit on his special high seat and he will rule all the people. He will be a priest on the seat of a king. This one man will be priest and king.’ ” 14 They will put the crown in the house of the Lord . This is to remember Heldai, Tobijah, Jedaiah and Hen the son of Zephaniah. This is because they brought the gold from Babylon.

15 People will come a long way and they will help to build the house of the Lord . Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you. All this will happen if you completely obey the Lord your God.’

The Four Chariots

6 Then I turned around. I looked up and saw four chariots going between two bronze mountains. 2 Red horses were pulling the first chariot. Black horses were pulling the second chariot. 3 White horses were pulling the third chariot, and horses with red spots were pulling the fourth chariot. 4 I asked the angel who was talking with me, “Sir, what does this mean?”

5 The angel said, “These are the four winds. [ a ] They have just come from the Lord of the whole world. 6 The black horses will go north, the red horses will go east, the white horses will go west, and the horses with red spots will go south.”

7 The red spotted horses were anxious to go look at their part of the earth, so the angel told them, “Go walk through the earth.” So they went walking through their part of the earth.

8 Then he shouted at me and said, “Look, those horses that were going north finished their job in Babylon . They have calmed my spirit; I am not angry now!”

Joshua the Priest Gets a Crown

9 Then I received another message from the Lord . He said, 10 “Heldai, Tobijah, and Jedaiah have come from the captives [ b ] in Babylon. Get silver and gold from these men and then go to the house of Josiah son of Zephaniah. 11 Use the silver and gold to make a crown. Put it on the head of the high priest, Joshua son of Jehozadak. 12 Then tell him this is what the Lord All-Powerful says:

‘There is a man called the Branch.
He will grow strong,
and he will build the Lord ’s Temple.
13 He will build the Lord ’s Temple,
and he will receive the honor.
He will sit on his throne and be the ruler,
and a priest will stand by his throne.
These two men will work together in peace.’

14 The crown will be kept in my Temple, [ c ] so that when people see it, they will remember Heldai, Tobijah, Jedaiah, and the kindness of Zephaniah’s son Josiah.”

15 People living far away will come and build the Lord ’s Temple. Then you will know for sure that the Lord All-Powerful sent me to you people. All these things will happen if you do what the Lord your God says.

Footnotes

  1. Zechariah 6:5 four winds Or “four spirits.” Four winds often means “winds that blow from every direction: north, south, east, and west.”
  2. Zechariah 6:10 captives People taken away as prisoners. Here, it means the Jewish people who were taken to Babylon.
  3. Zechariah 6:14 my Temple Literally, “the Temple of the Lord .”

6 And I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came four chariots out from between two mountains; and the mountains were mountains of brass.

2 In the first chariot were red horses; and in the second chariot black horses;

3 And in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot grisled and bay horses.

4 Then I answered and said unto the angel that talked with me, What are these, my lord?

5 And the angel answered and said unto me, These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth.

6 The black horses which are therein go forth into the north country; and the white go forth after them; and the grisled go forth toward the south country.

7 And the bay went forth, and sought to go that they might walk to and fro through the earth: and he said, Get you hence, walk to and fro through the earth. So they walked to and fro through the earth.

8 Then cried he upon me, and spake unto me, saying, Behold, these that go toward the north country have quieted my spirit in the north country.

9 And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

10 Take of them of the captivity, even of Heldai, of Tobijah, and of Jedaiah, which are come from Babylon, and come thou the same day, and go into the house of Josiah the son of Zephaniah;

11 Then take silver and gold, and make crowns, and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest;

12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The Branch ; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord :

13 Even he shall build the temple of the Lord ; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

14 And the crowns shall be to Helem, and to Tobijah, and to Jedaiah, and to Hen the son of Zephaniah, for a memorial in the temple of the Lord .

15 And they that are far off shall come and build in the temple of the Lord , and ye shall know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto you. And this shall come to pass, if ye will diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God.

The Four Chariots

6 Now I raised my eyes again and looked, and behold, ( A ) four chariots were going out from between the two mountains; and the mountains were bronze mountains. 2 With the first chariot were ( B ) red horses, with the second chariot ( C ) black horses, 3 with the third chariot ( D ) white horses, and with the fourth chariot strong ( E ) spotted horses. 4 So I responded and said to the angel who was speaking with me, “ ( F ) What are these, my lord?” 5 The angel replied to me, “These are the ( G ) four spirits of heaven, going out after taking their stand before the Lord of all the earth, 6 with one of which the black horses are going out to the ( H ) north country; and the white ones are to go out after them, while the spotted ones are to go out to the ( I ) south country.” 7 When the strong ones went out, they [ a ] were eager to go to [ b ] ( J ) patrol the earth. And He said, “Go, [ c ] patrol the earth.” So they [ d ] patrolled the earth. 8 Then He called out to me and spoke to me, saying, “See, those who are going to the land of the north have [ e ] ( K ) appeased My wrath in the land of the north.”

9 The ( L ) word of the Lord also came to me, saying, 10 ( M ) Take an offering from the exiles, from Heldai, Tobijah, and Jedaiah; and you shall go the same day and enter the house of Josiah the son of Zephaniah, where they have arrived from Babylon.

The Symbolic Crowns

11 Also take silver and gold, make an ornate ( N ) crown, and set it on the head of ( O ) Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest. 12 Then say to him, ‘The Lord of armies says this: “Behold, there is a Man whose name is [ f ] ( P ) Branch, for He will [ g ] ( Q ) branch out from where He is; and He will ( R ) build the temple of the Lord . 13 Yes, it is He who will build the temple of the Lord , and He who will ( S ) bear the majesty and sit and ( T ) rule on His throne. So He will be a ( U ) priest on His throne, and the counsel of peace will be between the two [ h ] offices.”’ 14 Now the ( V ) crown will become a reminder in the temple of the Lord to Helem, Tobijah, Jedaiah, and [ i ] Hen the son of Zephaniah. 15 ( W ) Those who are far away will come and [ j ] build the temple of the Lord .” Then you will ( X ) know that the Lord of armies has sent me to you. And it will take place if you completely ( Y ) obey [ k ] the Lord your God.

Four Chariots

6 I looked up again, and there before me were four chariots ( A ) coming out from between two mountains—mountains of bronze. 2 The first chariot had red horses, the second black, ( B ) 3 the third white, ( C ) and the fourth dappled—all of them powerful. 4 I asked the angel who was speaking to me, “What are these, my lord?”

5 The angel answered me, “These are the four spirits [ a ] ( D ) of heaven, going out from standing in the presence of the Lord of the whole world. ( E ) 6 The one with the black horses is going toward the north country, the one with the white horses toward the west, [ b ] and the one with the dappled horses toward the south.”

7 When the powerful horses went out, they were straining to go throughout the earth. ( F ) And he said, “Go throughout the earth!” So they went throughout the earth.

8 Then he called to me, “Look, those going toward the north country have given my Spirit [ c ] rest ( G ) in the land of the north.” ( H )

A Crown for Joshua

9 The word of the Lord came to me: 10 “Take silver and gold from the exiles Heldai, Tobijah and Jedaiah, who have arrived from Babylon. ( I ) Go the same day to the house of Josiah son of Zephaniah. 11 Take the silver and gold and make a crown, ( J ) and set it on the head of the high priest, Joshua ( K ) son of Jozadak. [ d ] ( L ) 12 Tell him this is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Here is the man whose name is the Branch, ( M ) and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the Lord . ( N ) 13 It is he who will build the temple of the Lord , and he will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. And he [ e ] will be a priest ( O ) on his throne. And there will be harmony between the two.’ 14 The crown will be given to Heldai, [ f ] Tobijah, Jedaiah and Hen [ g ] son of Zephaniah as a memorial ( P ) in the temple of the Lord . 15 Those who are far away will come and help to build the temple of the Lord , ( Q ) and you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you. ( R ) This will happen if you diligently obey ( S ) the Lord your God.”
