Zechariah 13

The Lord takes away the sin of the people

13 ‘On that day, water will start to pour from a fountain for King David's descendants and Jerusalem's people. It will make them clean from their sins and the dirty things that they have done.’

2 The Lord Almighty says, ‘On that day, I will remove the names of false gods from the country. Everyone will forget them. I will remove all the false prophets. And I will remove the bad spirit that is not holy.

3 And if anyone appears as a prophet again, his father and his mother will say to him, “You must die. You do not speak true words. The Lord has not spoken to you.” Then they will kill him.

4 On that day, every prophet will be ashamed that he was ever a prophet. He will not put on the clothes of a prophet that they make from hair. Then people will not know that he is a prophet.

5 He will say, “I am not a prophet. I am a farmer. From the time that I was a boy, I have worked on the land.”

6 If someone asks him, “Who cut your body?” he will answer, “My friends cut me when I was at their house.” ’

Kill the shepherd and the sheep will run away

7 ‘Attack my shepherd with a sharp knife.

Attack the man that is next to me,’

says the Lord Almighty.

‘Kill the shepherd and then the sheep will run away.
Then I will attack the young sheep.

8 In the whole country,’ says the Lord ,

‘two thirds of the people will die.
But one third will still be living there.

9 I will bring these people through fire.

As men clean silver in the fire, so I will clean them.

As men test gold in the fire, so I will test them.

They will speak my name and I will answer them.
I will say, “They are my people.”
They will say, “The Lord is our God.” ’

13 But at that time a new spring of water will be opened for David’s family and for the other people living in Jerusalem. That fountain will be to wash away their sins and to make the people pure.

No More False Prophets

2 The Lord All-Powerful says, “At that time I will remove all the idols from the earth. People will not even remember their names, and I will remove the false prophets and unclean spirits from the earth. 3 Whoever continues to prophesy will be punished. Even their parents, their own mother and father, will say to them, ‘You have spoken lies in the name of the Lord , so you must die!’ Their own mother and father will stab them for prophesying. 4 At that time the prophets will be ashamed of their visions and prophecies. They will not wear the rough cloth that shows a person is a prophet. They will not wear those clothes to trick people with the lies they call prophecies. 5 They will say, ‘I am not a prophet. I am a farmer. I have worked as a farmer since I was a little child.’ 6 But other people will say, ‘Then what are these wounds in your hands?’ He will say, ‘I was beaten in the house of my friends.’”

7 The Lord All-Powerful says, “Sword, wake up and strike the shepherd, my friend! Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will run away. And I will punish those little ones. 8 Two-thirds of the people in the land will be struck down and die,” says the Lord , “but one-third will survive. 9 Then I will test those survivors by giving them many troubles. The troubles will be like the fire a person uses to prove silver is pure. I will test them the way a person tests gold. Then they will call to me for help, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘You are my people.’ And they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’”

13 In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.

2 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.

3 And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the Lord : and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth.

4 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive:

5 But he shall say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.

6 And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

7 Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the Lord of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

8 And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord , two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.

9 And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God.

False Prophets Ashamed

13 “On that day a ( A ) fountain will be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for ( B ) sin and for ( C ) defilement.

2 “And it will come about on that day,” declares the Lord of armies, “that I will ( D ) eliminate the names of the idols from the land, and they will no longer be remembered; and I will also remove the ( E ) prophets and the ( F ) unclean spirit from the land. 3 And if anyone still ( G ) prophesies, then his father and mother who gave birth to him will say to him, ‘You shall ( H ) not live, because you have spoken ( I ) falsely in the name of the Lord ’; and his ( J ) father and mother who gave birth to him shall pierce him through when he prophesies. 4 Also it will come about on that day that the prophets will each be ( K ) ashamed of his vision when he prophesies, and they will not put on a ( L ) hairy robe in order to deceive; 5 but he will say, ‘I am ( M ) not a prophet; I am a cultivator of the ground, because a man [ a ] sold me as a slave in my youth.’ 6 And someone will say to him, ‘What are these wounds ( N ) between your [ b ] arms?’ Then he will say, ‘ Those with which I was wounded at the house of [ c ] my friends.’

7 “Awake, ( O ) sword, against My ( P ) Shepherd,
And against the Man, My ( Q ) Associate,”
Declares the Lord of armies.
( R ) Strike the Shepherd and the sheep will be scattered;
And I will ( S ) turn My hand [ d ] against the little ones.
8 And it will come about in all the land,”
Declares the Lord ,
“That ( T ) two parts in it will be cut off and perish;
But the third will be left in it.
9 And I will bring the third part through the ( U ) fire,
Refine them as silver is refined,
And test them as gold is tested.
They will ( V ) call on My name,
And I will ( W ) answer them;
I will say, ‘They are ( X ) My people,’
And they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’”

( G )
