Song of solomon 5

The young man:

5 I have come into my garden, my sister, my bride.
I have taken my myrrh with my spice.
I have eaten my honeycomb and my honey.
I have drunk my wine and my milk.

The writer:

Eat, friends, and drink, you who love each other!
Drink until you can drink no more! [ a ]

A dream

The young woman:

2 I slept but my mind was awake. [ b ]
Listen! My lover is knocking on my door!

He said, ‘Open the door for me, my dear friend.
You are my sister,
the perfect one that I love.
To me you are like a beautiful dove.
Dew from the night air covers my head.
My hair is very wet.’

3 I said, ‘I have taken off my day clothes.
I do not want to dress myself again.
I have washed my feet.
I do not want them to get dirty again.’

4 My lover pushed his hand through the hole in the door.
My heart began to beat faster because he was near.
5 I got up to open the door for my lover.
My hands were wet with myrrh.
Myrrh dropped from my fingers
onto the handle of the door.
6 I opened the door for my lover.
But he had already turned away.
He had gone!
I was very upset that he had gone away.
I looked for him but I did not find him.
I called to him but he did not answer me.
7 The city guards found me
as they walked in the streets of the city.
They beat me and they hurt my body.
Those guards on the city walls took away my robe.

8 Young women of Jerusalem,
please find my lover!
Promise me to tell him this, if you find him.
Tell him that my love for him has made me weak!

The young women of Jerusalem:

9 Tell us this, most beautiful of all women.
Why do you think that your lover is better than other men?
Why must we promise to do this for you?

The young woman:

10 My lover is very handsome and healthy.
He is the greatest man among 10,000 men.
11 His head is like very pure gold.
The hairs on his head are like waves.
They are black like a raven.
12 His eyes are like doves beside streams of water.
They are like doves that someone has washed in milk.
They shine like jewels.
13 The sides of his face are like a garden with spice trees.
Their smell is like perfume.
His lips are like lilies
with myrrh that falls from them.
14 His arms are like bars of gold
with jewels in them.
His body shines like bright ivory,
with sapphire jewels to make it more beautiful.
15 His legs are like pillars of beautiful stone.
They stand on feet that are like pure gold.
He stands tall like the mountains of Lebanon.
He is as handsome as its best cedar trees.
16 The taste of his mouth is very sweet.
Everything about him causes me to love him.

I say to you, young women of Jerusalem,
this is my lover!
This is my true friend.

Footnotes

  1. 5:1 It may be the writer of the poems who says this, or it may be the friends who are at the wedding feast.
  2. 5:2 The woman sleeps and she has another dream.

He Speaks

5 My darling my bride, I have entered my garden.
I have gathered my myrrh and spice.
I have eaten my honey and honeycomb.
I have drunk my wine and milk.

The Women Speak to the Lovers

Dearest friends, eat, drink!
Be drunk with love!

She Speaks

2 I am asleep,
but my heart is awake.
I hear my lover knocking, saying,
“Open to me, my darling, my love,
my dove, my perfect one!
My head is soaked with dew.
My hair is wet with the mist of the night.”

3 “I have taken off my robe. [ a ]
I don’t want to put it on again.
I have washed my feet.
I don’t want to get them dirty again.”

4 But my lover put his hand through the opening, [ b ]
and I felt sorry for him. [ c ]
5 I got up to open for my lover,
myrrh dripping from my hands,
myrrh scented lotion dripped from my fingers
onto the handles of the lock.
6 I opened for my lover,
but my lover had turned away and was gone!
I nearly died
when he came and went. [ d ]
I looked for him,
but I couldn’t find him.
I called for him,
but he didn’t answer me.
7 The guards patrolling the city found me.
They hit me.
They hurt me.
The guards on the wall
took my robe from me.

8 I tell you, women of Jerusalem,
if you find my lover, tell him I am weak with love. [ e ]

The Women of Jerusalem Answer Her

9 Beautiful woman,
how is your lover different from other lovers?
Is your lover better than other lovers?
Is that why you ask us to make this promise?

She Answers the Women of Jerusalem

10 My lover is tanned and radiant.
He would stand out among 10,000 men.
11 His head is like the purest gold.
His hair is curly and as black as a raven.
12 His eyes are like doves by a stream,
like doves in a pool of milk,
like a jewel in its setting.
13 His cheeks are like a garden of spices,
like flowers used for perfume.
His lips are like lilies,
dripping with liquid myrrh.
14 His arms are like gold rods,
filled with jewels.
His body is like smooth ivory
with sapphires set in it.
15 His legs are like marble pillars
on bases of fine gold.
He stands tall
like the finest cedar tree in Lebanon!
16 Yes, women of Jerusalem, my lover is everything I desire.
His mouth is the sweetest of all.
This is my lover;
this is my darling.

Footnotes

  1. Song of Solomon 5:3 robe Or “veil,” a piece of cloth used to cover a person’s face. Also in verse 7.
  2. Song of Solomon 5:4 put … opening Or “pulled his hand from the opening.” In one sense, this might refer to a lock and key. Some ancient keys were shaped like a hand. The key was inserted through a hole in the door, and the “fingers” fit into special holes that allowed the bolt to slide, locking and unlocking the door.
  3. Song of Solomon 5:4 I felt sorry for him Literally, “My insides stirred for him.”
  4. Song of Solomon 5:6 I nearly died … went Or “My soul left when he spoke.”
  5. Song of Solomon 5:8 I am weak with love Or “I am lovesick.”

5 I am come into my garden, my sister, my spouse: I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk: eat, O friends; drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved.

2 I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying, Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night.

3 I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on? I have washed my feet; how shall I defile them?

4 My beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were moved for him.

5 I rose up to open to my beloved; and my hands dropped with myrrh, and my fingers with sweet smelling myrrh, upon the handles of the lock.

6 I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.

7 The watchmen that went about the city found me, they smote me, they wounded me; the keepers of the walls took away my veil from me.

8 I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, if ye find my beloved, that ye tell him, that I am sick of love.

9 What is thy beloved more than another beloved, O thou fairest among women? what is thy beloved more than another beloved, that thou dost so charge us?

10 My beloved is white and ruddy, the chiefest among ten thousand.

11 His head is as the most fine gold, his locks are bushy, and black as a raven.

12 His eyes are as the eyes of doves by the rivers of waters, washed with milk, and fitly set.

13 His cheeks are as a bed of spices, as sweet flowers: his lips like lilies, dropping sweet smelling myrrh.

14 His hands are as gold rings set with the beryl: his belly is as bright ivory overlaid with sapphires.

15 His legs are as pillars of marble, set upon sockets of fine gold: his countenance is as Lebanon, excellent as the cedars.

16 His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.
