Revelation 4

God on his throne

4 After this, I looked. There in front of me was an open door in heaven. I heard the same voice that I had heard before. It spoke like the sound of a trumpet. It said to me, ‘Come up here. I will show you the things that must happen after this.’

2 Immediately God's Spirit caused me to see and to hear more things. I saw a throne in heaven, with someone sitting on it. 3 The person who sat there shone with bright red and white light, like jewels called jasper and ruby. Around the throne there was a rainbow that shone with bright green light like an emerald jewel. 4 All around the throne there were 24 other thrones. 24 leaders were sitting on these thrones. They were wearing white clothes and they had gold crowns on their heads. 5 A storm with bright lightning came from the throne. There was the loud noise of thunder. In front of the throne there were seven lights of fire burning brightly. These lights are the seven spirits of God. [ a ] 6 Also in front of the throne there was something like a sea of glass that shone with light.

In the middle, round the throne, there were four other beings that were alive. They had eyes all over them, on their fronts and on their backs. 7 The first of these beings was like a lion. The second being was like an ox. The third being had a face like a man's face. And the fourth being was like an eagle that was flying. 8 Each of these four beings had six wings. They had eyes all over them, even under their wings. All day and all night they never stop saying:

‘The Lord God has all power and authority.
He has no bad thing in him. He is completely good.
He has always been alive. He is alive now.
He will continue to be alive for ever.’

9 God sits on the throne and he is alive for ever. The four beings that are alive worship him and they thank him. 10 When they do this, the 24 leaders bend down to the ground. They also worship the Lord God, who sits on the throne and is alive for ever. They put their crowns in front of God's throne, and they praise him. They say:

11 ‘God, our Lord, you are very good!
Everyone should give you honour and say how great and powerful you are!
Everyone should worship you, because you created everything.
You decided to make them and so you made them!
That is why everything in the world is here.’

John Sees Heaven

4 Then I looked, and there before me was an open door in heaven. And I heard the same voice that spoke to me before. It was the voice that sounded like a trumpet. It said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must happen after this.” 2 Immediately the Spirit took control of me, and there in heaven was a throne with someone sitting on it. 3 The one sitting there was as beautiful as precious stones, like jasper and carnelian. All around the throne was a rainbow with clear colors like an emerald.

4 In a circle around the throne were 24 other thrones with 24 elders sitting on them. The elders were dressed in white, and they had golden crowns on their heads. 5 Lightning flashes and noises of thunder came from the throne. Before the throne there were seven lamps burning, which are the seven Spirits of God. 6 Also before the throne there was something that looked like a sea of glass, as clear as crystal.

In front of the throne and on each side of it there were four living beings. They had eyes all over them, in front and in back. 7 The first living being was like a lion. The second was like a bull. The third had a face like a man. The fourth was like a flying eagle. 8 Each of these four living beings had six wings. They were covered all over with eyes, inside and out. Day and night they never stopped saying,

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God All-Powerful.
He always was, he is, and he is coming.”

9 These living beings were giving glory and honor and thanks to the one who sits on the throne, the one who lives forever and ever. And every time they did this, 10 the 24 elders bowed down before the one who sits on the throne. They worshiped him who lives forever and ever. They put their crowns down before the throne and said,

11 “Our Lord and God!
You are worthy to receive glory and honor and power.
You made all things.
Everything existed and was made because you wanted it.”

4 After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.

2 And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.

4 And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.

5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

7 And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.

8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,

10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

Scene in Heaven

4 After ( A ) these things I looked, and behold, ( B ) a door standing open in heaven, and the first voice which I had heard, ( C ) like the sound of a trumpet speaking with me, said, “ ( D ) Come up here, and I will ( E ) show you what must take place after these things.” 2 Immediately I was ( F ) in the [ a ] Spirit; and behold, ( G ) a throne was standing in heaven, and ( H ) someone was sitting on the throne. 3 And He who was sitting was like a ( I ) jasper stone and a ( J ) sardius in appearance; and there was a [ b ] ( K ) rainbow around the throne, like an ( L ) emerald in appearance. 4 ( M ) Around the throne were ( N ) twenty-four thrones; and upon the thrones I saw ( O ) twenty-four elders ( P ) sitting, clothed in ( Q ) white garments, and ( R ) golden crowns on their heads.

The Throne and Worship of the Creator

5 Out from the throne *came ( S ) flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder. And there were ( T ) seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are [ c ] ( U ) the seven spirits of God; 6 and before the throne there was something like a ( V ) sea of glass, like crystal; and in the [ d ] center and ( W ) around the throne, ( X ) four living creatures ( Y ) full of eyes in front and behind. 7 ( Z ) The first living creature was like a lion, the second creature like a calf, the third creature had a face like that of a man, and the fourth creature was like a flying eagle. 8 And the ( AA ) four living creatures, each one of them having ( AB ) six wings, are ( AC ) full of eyes around and within; and ( AD ) day and night [ e ] they do not cease to say,

( AE ) Holy, holy, holy is the ( AF ) Lord God, the Almighty , ( AG ) who was and who is and who [ f ] is to come.”

9 And when the living creatures give glory, honor, and thanks to Him who ( AH ) sits on the throne, to ( AI ) Him who lives forever and ever, 10 the ( AJ ) twenty-four elders will ( AK ) fall down before Him who ( AL ) sits on the throne, and they will worship ( AM ) Him who lives forever and ever, and will cast their ( AN ) crowns before the throne, saying,

11 ( AO ) Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You ( AP ) created all things, and because of Your will they [ g ] existed, and were created.”

The Throne in Heaven

4 After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open ( A ) in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet ( B ) said, “Come up here, ( C ) and I will show you what must take place after this.” ( D ) 2 At once I was in the Spirit, ( E ) and there before me was a throne in heaven ( F ) with someone sitting on it. 3 And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper ( G ) and ruby. ( H ) A rainbow ( I ) that shone like an emerald ( J ) encircled the throne. 4 Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. ( K ) They were dressed in white ( L ) and had crowns of gold on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. ( M ) In front of the throne, seven lamps ( N ) were blazing. These are the seven spirits [ a ] ( O ) of God. 6 Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, ( P ) clear as crystal.

In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, ( Q ) and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. ( R ) 7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. ( S ) 8 Each of the four living creatures ( T ) had six wings ( U ) and was covered with eyes all around, ( V ) even under its wings. Day and night ( W ) they never stop saying:

“‘Holy, holy, holy

is the Lord God Almighty,’ [ b ] ( X )

who was, and is, and is to come.” ( Y )

9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne ( Z ) and who lives for ever and ever, ( AA ) 10 the twenty-four elders ( AB ) fall down before him ( AC ) who sits on the throne ( AD ) and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:

11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power, ( AE )
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
and have their being.” ( AF )
