Revelation 20

The 1,000 years

20 Then I saw an angel who was coming down from heaven. He was holding the key to the deep hole. [ a ] He also held a great chain in his hand. 2 He took hold of the dragon. That dragon is the Devil and Satan. He is the snake who has lived since long ago. [ b ] The angel tied up the dragon with the chain for 1,000 years. 3 Then he threw the dragon into the deep hole. He closed the door to the deep hole, and he locked it with the key. He put a seal on the door. During that time, Satan could no longer deceive the people of all nations. But after the 1,000 years have finished, he must go free for a short time.

4 Then I saw some thrones, and I saw people who were sitting on them. These people had received authority to judge other people. I also saw the souls of people who had died because they served Jesus. People had cut off their heads because they had told the truth about Jesus, and they had spoken God's message. These believers had not worshipped the wild animal or his image. They had not received the wild animal's mark on their heads or on their hands. Now they became alive again. They ruled as kings together with Christ for 1,000 years. 5 (But all the other dead people did not become alive again until the 1,000 years had finished.) This is the first time that God raises up dead people to become alive again. 6 God has blessed those people that he raises up that first time. They belong to God as his holy people. The second death has no power over them. Instead, they will be priests who serve God and Christ. They will rule as kings with him for 1,000 years.

God sends Satan into the lake of fire

7 When the 1,000 years have finished, God will let Satan go free out of his prison. 8 Satan will then go and deceive people in nations everywhere in the world. He will make them believe him. Those nations are God's enemies, Gog and Magog. [ c ] Satan will bring them together to fight a war against God's people. Satan's army has many people, as much as the sand on the shore of the sea. [ d ] 9 I saw them as they marched over the whole earth. They arrived at the city which God loves. That is where God's people had made their camp. Satan's army made their camp all around the city. Then fire came down from heaven and it destroyed them completely. 10 The Devil had deceived those people. I saw God throw him into the lake of fire that burns with sulphur. That is the lake where he had already thrown the wild animal and the false prophet. They will have a lot of pain in that place, all day and all night for ever.

God judges all the dead people

11 Then I saw a great white throne. I saw that God was sitting on it. The earth and the sky rushed away from the place where he sat. There was no longer any place for them. 12 I also saw the people who had died, important people and ordinary people. They were standing in front of the great throne. Then someone opened books to see what was in them. God had written in them all the things that the people had done. Then someone opened another book which is God's book of life. [ e ] God judged the people who had died. He looked in the books to see what they had done, and he decided what was right.

13 The sea brought up all the dead people who were in it. Death and Hades, the place for dead people, brought up all the dead people who were there too. God judged each person. God saw what they had done, and he decided what was right. 14 Then God threw Death and Hades into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death for people. 15 If anyone's name was not written in the book of life, God threw that person into the lake of fire.

Footnotes

  1. 20:1 We read about this deep hole in Revelation 9:1 , 2 .
  2. 20:2 We read about the dragon in Revelation 12:3 , 4 .
  3. 20:8 The prophet Ezekiel spoke about Gog, the leader, and Magog, his people, as great enemies of God's people Israel. He spoke about them many years before Jesus was born. See Ezekiel 38—39 . Ezekiel said that God would destroy these enemies with fire from heaven. God himself would destroy them because they were such great enemies of his people. So John uses the same names when he describes the last war between God's people and Satan's people.
  4. 20:8 There is so much sand on the shore of the sea that nobody could ever count the bits of sand.
  5. 20:12 We read about ‘God's book of life’ in Revelation 3:5 ; 13:8 ; 17:8 .

The 1000 Years

20 I saw an angel coming down out of heaven. The angel had the key to the bottomless pit. The angel also held a large chain in his hand. 2 The angel grabbed the dragon, that old snake, also known as the devil or Satan. The angel tied the dragon with the chain for 1000 years. 3 Then the angel threw the dragon into the bottomless pit and closed it. The angel locked it over the dragon. The angel did this so that the dragon could not trick the people of the earth until the 1000 years were ended. After 1000 years the dragon must be made free for a short time.

4 Then I saw some thrones and people sitting on them. These were the ones who had been given the power to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been killed because they were faithful to the truth of Jesus and the message from God. They did not worship the beast or its idol. They did not receive the mark of the beast on their foreheads or on their hands. They came back to life and ruled with Christ for 1000 years. 5 (The rest of the dead did not live again until the 1000 years were ended.)

This is the first resurrection. 6 Great blessings belong to those who share in this first resurrection. They are God’s holy people. The second death has no power over them. They will be priests for God and for Christ. They will rule with him for 1000 years.

The Defeat of Satan

7 When the 1000 years are ended, Satan will be made free from his prison. 8 He will go out to trick the nations in all the earth, the nations known as Gog and Magog. Satan will gather the people for battle. There will be more people than anyone can count, like sand on the seashore.

9 I saw Satan’s army march across the earth and gather around the camp of God’s people and the city that God loves. But fire came down from heaven and destroyed Satan’s army. 10 And he (the one who tricked these people) was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur with the beast and the false prophet. There they would be tortured day and night forever and ever.

People of the World Are Judged

11 Then I saw a large white throne. I saw the one who was sitting on the throne. Earth and sky ran away from him and disappeared. 12 And I saw those who had died, great and small, standing before the throne. Some books were opened. And another book was opened—the book of life. The people were judged by what they had done, which is written in the books.

13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it. Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them. All these people were judged by what they had done. 14 And Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death. 15 And anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

20 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,

8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Satan Bound

20 Then I saw ( A ) an angel coming down from heaven, holding the ( B ) key of the abyss and a great chain [ a ] in his hand. 2 And he took hold of the ( C ) dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and ( D ) bound him for a thousand years; 3 and he threw him into the ( E ) abyss and shut it and ( F ) sealed it over him, so that he would ( G ) not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time.

4 Then I saw ( H ) thrones, and ( I ) they sat on them, and ( J ) judgment was given to them. And I saw ( K ) the souls of those who had been beheaded because of [ b ] their ( L ) testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not ( M ) worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the ( N ) mark on their foreheads and on their hands; and they ( O ) came to life and ( P ) reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5 The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. ( Q ) This is the first resurrection. 6 ( R ) Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the ( S ) second death has no power, but they will be ( T ) priests of God and of Christ, and will ( U ) reign with Him for a thousand years.

Satan Freed and Doomed

7 When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be ( V ) released from his prison, 8 and will come out to ( W ) deceive the nations which are at the ( X ) four corners of the earth, ( Y ) Gog and Magog, to ( Z ) gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the ( AA ) sand of the [ c ] seashore. 9 And they ( AB ) came up on the [ d ] broad plain of the earth and surrounded the ( AC ) camp of the [ e ] saints and the ( AD ) beloved city, and ( AE ) fire came down from heaven and devoured them. 10 And ( AF ) the devil who ( AG ) deceived them was thrown into the ( AH ) lake of fire and [ f ] brimstone, where the ( AI ) beast and the ( AJ ) false prophet are also; and they will be ( AK ) tormented day and night forever and ever.

Judgment at the Throne of God

11 Then I saw a great white ( AL ) throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose [ g ] presence ( AM ) earth and heaven fled, and ( AN ) no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, the ( AO ) great and the small, standing before the throne, and [ h ] ( AP ) books were opened; and another [ i ] book was opened, which is ( AQ ) the book of life; and the dead ( AR ) were judged from the things which were written in the [ j ] books, ( AS ) according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, and ( AT ) Death and Hades ( AU ) gave up the dead who were in them; and they were judged, each one of them ( AV ) according to their deeds. 14 Then ( AW ) Death and Hades were thrown into ( AX ) the lake of fire. This is the ( AY ) second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if [ k ] anyone’s name was not found written in ( AZ ) the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

The Thousand Years

20 And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, ( A ) having the key ( B ) to the Abyss ( C ) and holding in his hand a great chain. 2 He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, ( D ) and bound him for a thousand years. ( E ) 3 He threw him into the Abyss, ( F ) and locked and sealed ( G ) it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations ( H ) anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time.

4 I saw thrones ( I ) on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. ( J ) And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded ( K ) because of their testimony about Jesus ( L ) and because of the word of God. ( M ) They [ a ] had not worshiped the beast ( N ) or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. ( O ) They came to life and reigned ( P ) with Christ a thousand years. 5 (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection. ( Q ) 6 Blessed ( R ) and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death ( S ) has no power over them, but they will be priests ( T ) of God and of Christ and will reign with him ( U ) for a thousand years.

The Judgment of Satan

7 When the thousand years are over, ( V ) Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations ( W ) in the four corners of the earth ( X ) —Gog and Magog ( Y ) —and to gather them for battle. ( Z ) In number they are like the sand on the seashore. ( AA ) 9 They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded ( AB ) the camp of God’s people, the city he loves. ( AC ) But fire came down from heaven ( AD ) and devoured them. 10 And the devil, who deceived them, ( AE ) was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, ( AF ) where the beast ( AG ) and the false prophet ( AH ) had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever. ( AI )

The Judgment of the Dead

11 Then I saw a great white throne ( AJ ) and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, ( AK ) and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, ( AL ) standing before the throne, and books were opened. ( AM ) Another book was opened, which is the book of life. ( AN ) The dead were judged ( AO ) according to what they had done ( AP ) as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades ( AQ ) gave up the dead ( AR ) that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. ( AS ) 14 Then death ( AT ) and Hades ( AU ) were thrown into the lake of fire. ( AV ) The lake of fire is the second death. ( AW ) 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life ( AX ) was thrown into the lake of fire.
