Revelation 19

The people in heaven praise God

19 After these things, I heard a sound like the voices of a great crowd of people in heaven. They were shouting,

‘Praise the Lord our God!
He has saved us!
He is very powerful!
We say that he is great!
2 Everything that he decides is right and fair.
He has punished that great prostitute.
She led people on the earth to do wicked things.
She murdered God's servants with her own hands.
But now God has punished her as she deserves.’ [ a ]

3 Then the crowd of people in heaven shouted again,

‘Praise the Lord our God!
The smoke from the fire that burns that city will go up for ever.’

4 The 24 leaders and the four beings that are alive then threw themselves down on the ground. They worshipped God, who was sitting on the throne. They said, ‘It is true! Praise the Lord God!’

5 Then a voice spoke from the throne. It said,

‘All of you who are God's servants,
praise our God!
All of you who respect God's power, worship him!
Important people and ordinary people should worship him!’

6 Then I heard a sound like the noise of a very big crowd that was shouting. The sound was like the noise of water that pours quickly along a river. It was like the noise of loud thunder. The crowd of people shouted,

‘Praise the Lord our God!
He rules with all power and authority!
7 We must shout with joy because we are so happy!
We will say that God is great!
The time has come for the Lamb's wedding party.
His bride has prepared herself.

8 God has given her linen clothes to wear that are bright and clean.’

These special linen clothes show the good things that God's holy people have done. [ b ]

9 Then the angel said to me, ‘Write down this message: “There will be a special meal at the Lamb's wedding party. God has truly blessed those people that he has asked to come to that meal.” ’ The angel also said to me, ‘This is a true message from God.’

10 Then I bent down low at the angel's feet to worship him. But he said to me, ‘You must not do that! I am only a servant of God, the same as you are. I am a servant, like all believers who show clearly that they trust in Jesus. God is the one that you should worship! When God gave a message to his prophets, it was Jesus that they spoke about.’

The great king on a white horse

11 I saw that heaven was now open. I saw a white horse there! The name of the man who was riding the horse was this: ‘A faithful, honest person’. He is always right when he judges people and when he goes to punish them in war. 12 His eyes burn like bright flames of fire. Many crowns are on his head. He has a name that is written on him, but nobody knows that name except himself. 13 He wears a long shirt with a lot of blood on it. His name is: ‘The Word of God’.

14 Heaven's armies were following him. They were also riding on white horses. They were wearing linen clothes that were white and clean. 15 A sharp sword was coming out of his mouth. [ c ] He will use this sword to attack the people of all the nations of the world. Then he will rule them with strong authority. He will punish them like someone who stamps on grapes in a winepress. That will show God's great anger against them. He is the Almighty God. [ d ] 16 The man who rides on the white horse has a name that is written on his shirt. It is also written high on his leg. His name is: ‘The King who rules over all other kings. The Lord who rules over all lords’. [ e ]

17 Then I saw an angel who was standing in the sun. He shouted loudly to all the birds that were flying high in the sky, ‘Come here! Come together to eat the big meal that God has prepared. 18 Eat the meat from the dead bodies of God's enemies! Come and eat the meat of kings, the meat of army captains and the meat of powerful men. Eat the meat of dead horses and the soldiers who ride them. Eat the meat of all kinds of people: slaves and free people, important people and ordinary people.’

19 Then I saw the wild animal and the kings of the earth and their armies. They had come together to fight a war. They were ready to fight a battle against the man who rode on the white horse and his army. 20 But the rider and his army caught the wild animal. They also caught the false prophet who had done miracles to help the wild animal. He used those miracles to deceive the people who had the wild animal's mark on them. Those people worshipped his image. Now the rider and his army threw the wild animal and the false prophet into the lake of fire. They were still alive when they threw them into the lake that burns with sulphur.

21 The rider of the white horse then killed all his other enemies. He killed them with the sword that came out of his mouth. So then all the birds ate the meat from the dead bodies until they were completely full.

Footnotes

  1. 19:2 Babylon and other wicked cities are like a prostitute. They cause people to turn away from God, so that they are not faithful to him.
  2. 19:8 God's people are clean and pure because Jesus, the Lamb, died in their place as a sacrifice.
  3. 19:15 This sharp sword shows that he speaks strong words against his enemies. See Revelation 1:16 .
  4. 19:15 God is angry with those people who are enemies of Jesus. Jesus will punish those people like someone who stamps on grapes to make wine. See Revelation 14:19-20 .
  5. 19:16 These verses describe Jesus. He is the great King who will win against all his enemies.

People in Heaven Praise God

19 After this I heard what sounded like a large crowd of people in heaven. The people were saying,

“Hallelujah [ a ] !
Victory, glory, and power belong to our God.
2 His judgments are true and right.
Our God has punished the prostitute.
She is the one who ruined the earth with her sexual sin.
God has punished the prostitute to pay her back for the death of his servants.”

3 These people also said,

“Hallelujah!
She is burning and her smoke will rise forever and ever.”

4 Then the 24 elders and the four living beings bowed down. They worshiped God, who sits on the throne. They said,

“Amen! Hallelujah!”

5 Then a voice came from the throne and said,

“Praise our God,
all you who serve him!
Praise our God,
all you small and great who honor him!”

6 Then I heard something that sounded like a large crowd of people. It was as loud as crashing waves or claps of thunder. The people were saying,

“Hallelujah!
Our Lord God rules.
He is the All-Powerful.
7 Let us rejoice and be happy
and give God glory!
Give God glory, because the wedding of the Lamb has come.
And the Lamb’s bride has made herself ready.
8 Fine linen was given to the bride for her to wear.
The linen was bright and clean.”

(The fine linen means the good things that God’s holy people did.)

9 Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Great blessings belong to those who are invited to the wedding meal of the Lamb!” Then the angel said, “These are the true words of God.”

10 Then I bowed down before the angel’s feet to worship him. But the angel said to me, “Don’t worship me! I am a servant like you and your brothers and sisters who have the truth of Jesus. So worship God! Because the truth of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

The Rider on the White Horse

11 Then I saw heaven open. There before me was a white horse. The rider on the horse was called Faithful and True, because he is right in his judging and in making war. 12 His eyes were like burning fire. He had many crowns on his head. A name was written on him, but he was the only one who knew its meaning. 13 He was dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and he was called the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven were following the rider on the white horse. They were also riding white horses. They were dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 A sharp sword came out of the rider’s mouth, a sword that he would use to defeat the nations. And he will rule the nations with a rod of iron. He will crush the grapes in the winepress of the terrible anger of God All-Powerful. 16 On his robe and on his leg was written this name:

king of kings and lord of lords

17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun. In a loud voice the angel said to all the birds flying in the sky, “Come together for the great supper of God. 18 Come together so that you can eat the bodies of rulers and army commanders and famous men. Come to eat the bodies of the horses and their riders and the bodies of all people—free, slave, small, and great.”

19 Then I saw the beast and the rulers of the earth. Their armies were gathered together to make war against the rider on the horse and his army. 20 But the beast was captured, and the false prophet was also captured. He was the one who did the miracles [ b ] for the beast. He had used these miracles to trick those who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its idol. The false prophet and the beast were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. 21 Their armies were killed with the sword that came out of the mouth of the rider on the horse. All the birds ate these bodies until they were full.

Footnotes

  1. Revelation 19:1 Hallelujah This means “Praise God!” Also in verses 3, 4, 6.
  2. Revelation 19:20 miracles False miracles—amazing acts done by the power of the devil.

19 And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:

2 For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.

3 And again they said, Alleluia And her smoke rose up for ever and ever.

4 And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.

5 And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great.

6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.

8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.

13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords .

17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;

18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.

19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.

20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

The Fourfold Hallelujah

19 After these things I heard something like a ( A ) loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying,

( B ) Hallelujah! ( C ) Salvation, ( D ) glory, and power belong to our God, 2 ( E ) because His ( F ) judgments are ( G ) true and righteous ; for He has judged the ( H ) great prostitute who was corrupting the earth with her sexual immorality, and He has ( I ) avenged the blood of His bond-servants [ a ] on her .” 3 And a second time they said, “ ( J ) Hallelujah! ( K ) Her smoke rises forever and ever .” 4 And the ( L ) twenty-four elders and the ( M ) four living creatures ( N ) fell down and worshiped God who sits on the throne, saying, “ ( O ) Amen. ( P ) Hallelujah!” 5 And a voice came from the throne, saying,

( Q ) Give praise to our God, all you His bond-servants, ( R ) you who fear Him, the small and the great.” 6 Then I heard something like ( S ) the voice of a great multitude and like ( T ) the sound of many waters, and like the ( U ) sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying,

( V ) Hallelujah! For the ( W ) Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns.

Marriage of the Lamb

7 Let’s rejoice and be glad and ( X ) give the glory to Him, because ( Y ) the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His [ b ] ( Z ) bride has prepared herself.” 8 It was given to her to clothe herself in ( AA ) fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the ( AB ) righteous acts of the [ c ] saints.

9 Then ( AC ) he *said to me, “ ( AD ) Write: ‘ ( AE ) Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb.’” And he *said to me, “ ( AF ) These are the true words of God.” 10 Then ( AG ) I fell at his feet to worship him. ( AH ) But he *said to me, “ [ d ] Do not do that; I am a ( AI ) fellow servant of yours and your brothers and sisters who ( AJ ) hold the testimony of Jesus; worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

The Coming of Christ

11 And I saw ( AK ) heaven opened, and behold, a ( AL ) white horse, and He who sat on it is called ( AM ) Faithful and True, and in ( AN ) righteousness He judges and wages war. 12 His ( AO ) eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many ( AP ) crowns; and He has a ( AQ ) name written on Him which no one knows except Himself. 13 He is clothed with a ( AR ) robe dipped in blood, and His name is called ( AS ) The Word of God. 14 And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in ( AT ) fine linen, ( AU ) white and clean, were following Him on white horses. 15 ( AV ) From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that ( AW ) with it He may strike down the nations, and He will [ e ] ( AX ) rule them with a rod of iron; and ( AY ) He treads the [ f ] wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. 16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has ( AZ ) a name written: “ ( BA ) KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

17 Then I saw [ g ] an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out with a loud voice, saying to ( BB ) all the birds that fly in ( BC ) midheaven, “ ( BD ) Come, assemble for the great feast of God, 18 so that you may ( BE ) eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, ( BF ) both free and slaves, and ( BG ) small and great.”

19 And I saw ( BH ) the beast and ( BI ) the kings of the earth and their armies, assembled to make war against Him who ( BJ ) sat on the horse, and against His army.

Doom of the Beast and False Prophet

20 And the beast was seized, and with him the ( BK ) false prophet who ( BL ) performed the signs [ h ] ( BM ) in his presence, by which he ( BN ) deceived those who had received the ( BO ) mark of the beast and those who ( BP ) worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the ( BQ ) lake of ( BR ) fire, which burns with [ i ] brimstone. 21 And the rest were killed with the sword which ( BS ) came from the mouth of Him who ( BT ) sat on the horse, and ( BU ) all the birds were filled with their flesh.

Threefold Hallelujah Over Babylon’s Fall

19 After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude ( A ) in heaven shouting:

“Hallelujah! ( B )
Salvation ( C ) and glory and power ( D ) belong to our God,
2 for true and just are his judgments. ( E )
He has condemned the great prostitute ( F )
who corrupted the earth by her adulteries.
He has avenged on her the blood of his servants.” ( G )

3 And again they shouted:

“Hallelujah! ( H )
The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever.” ( I )

4 The twenty-four elders ( J ) and the four living creatures ( K ) fell down ( L ) and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. And they cried:

5 Then a voice came from the throne, saying:

“Praise our God,
all you his servants, ( N )
you who fear him,
both great and small!” ( O )

6 Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, ( P ) like the roar of rushing waters ( Q ) and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:

“Hallelujah! ( R )
For our Lord God Almighty ( S ) reigns. ( T )
7 Let us rejoice and be glad
and give him glory! ( U )
For the wedding of the Lamb ( V ) has come,
and his bride ( W ) has made herself ready.
8 Fine linen, ( X ) bright and clean,
was given her to wear.”

(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts ( Y ) of God’s holy people.)

9 Then the angel said to me, ( Z ) “Write this: ( AA ) Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” ( AB ) And he added, “These are the true words of God.” ( AC )

10 At this I fell at his feet to worship him. ( AD ) But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! ( AE ) For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.” ( AF )

The Heavenly Warrior Defeats the Beast

11 I saw heaven standing open ( AG ) and there before me was a white horse, whose rider ( AH ) is called Faithful and True. ( AI ) With justice he judges and wages war. ( AJ ) 12 His eyes are like blazing fire, ( AK ) and on his head are many crowns. ( AL ) He has a name written on him ( AM ) that no one knows but he himself. ( AN ) 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, ( AO ) and his name is the Word of God. ( AP ) 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, ( AQ ) white ( AR ) and clean. 15 Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword ( AS ) with which to strike down ( AT ) the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” [ a ] ( AU ) He treads the winepress ( AV ) of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: ( AW )

king of kings and lord of lords . ( AX )

17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds ( AY ) flying in midair, ( AZ ) “Come, ( BA ) gather together for the great supper of God, ( BB ) 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people, ( BC ) free and slave, ( BD ) great and small.” ( BE )

19 Then I saw the beast ( BF ) and the kings of the earth ( BG ) and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse ( BH ) and his army. 20 But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet ( BI ) who had performed the signs ( BJ ) on its behalf. ( BK ) With these signs he had deluded ( BL ) those who had received the mark of the beast ( BM ) and worshiped its image. ( BN ) The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake ( BO ) of burning sulfur. ( BP ) 21 The rest were killed with the sword ( BQ ) coming out of the mouth of the rider on the horse, ( BR ) and all the birds ( BS ) gorged themselves on their flesh.
