Revelation 10

The angel and the little book

10 Then I saw another powerful angel. He was coming down from heaven. He had a cloud all round him, like his clothes. There was a rainbow above his head. His face was like the sun and his legs shone like fire. 2 He had a little book in his hand and it was open. He put his right foot on the sea and he put his left foot on the land. 3 Then he shouted with a loud voice, like a lion that roars. When he shouted, seven loud voices answered him. They were like the noise of thunder. 4 When the seven voices of thunder spoke, I was ready to write. But I heard a voice that came from heaven. The voice said to me, ‘Keep secret what the seven voices of thunder have said. Do not write it down.’

5 Then I looked again at the angel who stood with one foot on the sea and his other foot on the land. He raised his right hand towards heaven. 6 He made a strong promise by the name of God, who lives for ever. He created heaven, the earth and the sea, as well as everything that is in them. The angel said, ‘There is no more time to wait! 7 Now is the time when the seventh angel will make a sound with his trumpet. Then God will quickly finish what he wants to do. This has been a secret, but he told it long ago to the prophets who were his servants.’

8 Then I heard again the voice that spoke to me from heaven. He said, ‘Go to the angel who is standing with one foot on the sea and his other foot on the land. Go and take the book that is open in his hand.’ 9 So I went to the angel. I asked him to give me the little book. He said to me, ‘Take the book and then eat it. It will be very sweet like honey in your mouth. But it will hurt your stomach like bad food.’ 10 So I took the little book from the angel's hand and I ate it. It was as sweet as honey in my mouth. But when I had eaten the book, it hurt my stomach. 11 Then the voice said to me, ‘You must continue to tell God's message to people. You must say what will happen to people from everywhere in the world. They are the people of many nations, and people who speak many languages, and also their kings.’ [ a ]

Footnotes

  1. 10:11 Other verses in the Bible tell us about prophets who ‘ate’ messages from God. Then those prophets told God's message to other people. See Ezekiel 2:8—3:3 ; Jeremiah 15:16 . Now John must tell God's message to many people. The message about Jesus is good news, so it has a sweet taste. But if people do not agree with God's message, it will become like bad food in their stomachs.

The Angel and the Little Scroll

10 Then I saw another powerful angel coming down from heaven. The angel was dressed in a cloud. He had a rainbow around his head. The angel’s face was like the sun, and his legs were like poles of fire. 2 The angel was holding a small scroll. The scroll was open in his hand. He put his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land. 3 He shouted loudly like the roaring of a lion. After he shouted, the voices of seven thunders spoke.

4 The seven thunders spoke, and I started to write. But then I heard a voice from heaven that said, “Don’t write what the seven thunders said. Keep those things secret.”

5 Then the angel I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven. 6 The angel made a promise by the power of the one who lives forever and ever. He is the one who made the skies and all that is in them. He made the earth and all that is in it, and he made the sea and all that is in it. The angel said, “There will be no more waiting! 7 In the days when the seventh angel is ready to blow his trumpet, God’s secret plan will be completed—the Good News that God told to his servants, the prophets.”

8 Then I heard the same voice from heaven again. It said to me, “Go and take the open scroll that is in the angel’s hand. This is the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.”

9 So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, “Take the scroll and eat it. It will be sour in your stomach, but in your mouth it will be sweet like honey.” 10 So I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. In my mouth it tasted sweet like honey, but after I ate it, it was sour in my stomach. 11 Then I was told, “You must prophesy again about many races of people, many nations, languages, and rulers.”

10 And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:

2 And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth,

3 And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices.

4 And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.

5 And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven,

6 And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:

7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.

8 And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth.

9 And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.

10 And I took the little book out of the angel's hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.

11 And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.

The Angel and the Little Scroll

10 I saw another ( A ) strong angel ( B ) coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud; and the ( C ) rainbow was on his head, and ( D ) his face was like the sun, and his ( E ) feet like pillars of fire; 2 and he had in his hand a ( F ) little scroll, which was open. He placed ( G ) his right foot on the sea and his left on the land; 3 and he cried out with a loud voice, ( H ) as when a lion roars; and when he had cried out, the ( I ) seven peals of thunder [ a ] uttered their voices. 4 When the seven peals of thunder had spoken, ( J ) I was about to write; and I ( K ) heard a voice from heaven, saying, “ ( L ) Seal up the things which the seven peals of thunder have spoken, and do not write them.” 5 Then the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land ( M ) raised his right hand to heaven, 6 ( N ) and swore by ( O ) Him who lives forever and ever, ( P ) who created heaven and the things in it, and the earth and the things in it, and the sea and the things in it, that ( Q ) there will no longer be a delay, 7 but in the days of the voice of the ( R ) seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then ( S ) the mystery of God is finished, as He announced to His servants the prophets.

8 Then ( T ) the voice which I heard from heaven, I heard again speaking with me, and saying, “Go, take ( U ) the scroll which is open in the hand of the angel who ( V ) stands on the sea and on the land.” 9 And I went to the angel, telling him to give me the little scroll. And he *said to me, “ ( W ) Take it and eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.” 10 I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it, and in my mouth it was sweet as honey; and when I had eaten it, my stomach was made bitter. 11 And ( X ) they *said to me, “You must ( Y ) prophesy again concerning ( Z ) many peoples, nations, languages, and ( AA ) kings.”

The Angel and the Little Scroll

10 Then I saw another mighty angel ( A ) coming down from heaven. ( B ) He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow ( C ) above his head; his face was like the sun, ( D ) and his legs were like fiery pillars. ( E ) 2 He was holding a little scroll, ( F ) which lay open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, ( G ) 3 and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion. ( H ) When he shouted, the voices of the seven thunders ( I ) spoke. 4 And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write; ( J ) but I heard a voice from heaven ( K ) say, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down.” ( L )

5 Then the angel I had seen standing on the sea and on the land ( M ) raised his right hand to heaven. ( N ) 6 And he swore ( O ) by him who lives for ever and ever, ( P ) who created the heavens and all that is in them, the earth and all that is in it, and the sea and all that is in it, ( Q ) and said, “There will be no more delay! ( R ) 7 But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet, ( S ) the mystery ( T ) of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.” ( U )

8 Then the voice that I had heard from heaven ( V ) spoke to me once more: “Go, take the scroll ( W ) that lies open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.”

9 So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, “Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but ‘in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.’ [ a ] ( X ) 10 I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth, ( Y ) but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour. 11 Then I was told, “You must prophesy ( Z ) again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings.” ( AA )
