Psalm 89

This is a special song that Ethan the Ezrahite wrote.

God's special love [ a ]

89 I will always sing about the Lord 's faithful love.
I will tell my children and my grandchildren
that you are always faithful.
2 Yes! Your faithful love will always continue to be strong.
You will always be faithful,
as the skies will always be there.
3 The Lord has said,
‘I have made a covenant with the king that I chose.
I have made this strong promise to my servant David:
4 “Someone from your family will always be king.
They will rule for ever.” ’
Selah.
5 Lord , everything in heaven praises you
for the great things that you have done.
Yes, your angels meet together to praise you,
because you are always faithful.
6 In all the heavens,
there is no one like you, Lord !
No angel in heaven is equal to you.
7 When the angels meet together in heaven,
they respect you with fear.
All who meet round your throne in heaven respect you,
as you deserve.
8 Lord God Almighty,
no one is as powerful as you!
You are always faithful in all that you do!
9 You rule over the powerful sea.
When the waves rise up,
you make them quiet again.
10 You caught the monster Rahab
and you killed it!
With your power,
you chased away your enemies.
11 The heavens belong to you
and so does the earth.
You made the world
and everything that is in it.
12 You made everything,
from the north to the south.
Tabor and Hermon are happy to praise your name. [ b ]
13 You have great strength,
and you can do great things.
You hold up your right hand,
as you win against your enemies.
14 As King, you rule with justice,
and you always do what is right.
You show your faithful love and you are faithful.
15 You have truly blessed the people
who know how to praise you, Lord .
They know that you are pleased with them.
16 They praise your name all the time.
Your justice makes them happy.
17 You give strength and glory to your people.
Because you are kind to us,
we win against our enemies.
18 Yes! Our king belongs to the Lord ,
and he protects us like a shield.
Our king belongs to the Holy One of Israel.

God's covenant with David

19 A long time ago, Lord ,
you spoke to your servants.
In a vision, you said to them,
‘I have helped a brave soldier to be strong.
I have chosen as king
a young man from among the people.
20 I have found David, my servant.
I have poured my special oil on him,
to make him king.
21 I will help him with my power,
so that he is strong.
22 No enemy will win against him.
No cruel people will have power to hurt him.
23 I will destroy his enemies in front of him
I will kill those who hate him.
24 I will always be faithful
and show him my faithful love.
By my name he will win against his enemies.
25 I will cause his kingdom to reach
beyond the sea and the rivers.
26 The king will say to me, “You are my Father.
You are my God.
You protect me and you rescue me.”
27 Also, I will make him my firstborn son.
He will be the greatest of the kings of the earth.
28 I will always love him with my faithful love.
I will never change the covenant
that I have made with him.
29 Someone from his family will always be king.
They will rule for ever,
as long as there are skies above us.
30-31 But I will punish his descendants,
if they do not accept my laws.
If they do not obey my teaching, my rules, or my commands,
32 I will punish them.
Because of their sins,
I will give them much pain.
33 But I will not take my faithful love away from David.
I will always be faithful,
and I will do what I have promised to him.
34 I will not spoil the covenant that I have made with him.
I will always keep my promises.
35 I made that promise to David at one time,
and that will not change.
I promised him by my holy name
and I will never deceive him.
36 His descendants will always rule.
His kingdom will continue to be there for ever,
as long as the sun shines.
37 As the moon is always there in the sky,
to show that God is faithful,
David's kingdom will also continue.’
Selah.

A sad song

38 But now you have turned against your king.
You have become angry with the king that you have chosen.
39 You have spoiled the covenant
that you made with your servant.
You have thrown his crown into the dirt.
40 You have knocked down all the walls of his city.
You have destroyed all his strong places.
41 Every stranger robs him of his things.
His neighbours laugh at him.
42 You have made his enemies strong,
so that they win against him and they are happy.
43 You have made his weapons useless,
so that he cannot beat his enemies in war.
44 You have taken away his authority as king.
You have knocked down his throne to the ground.
45 He no longer has the strength of a young man.
You have dressed him in clothes of shame.
Selah.
46 Lord , how long will this continue?
Will you hide yourself from us for ever?
Will your anger continue to burn like a fire?
47 Remember that my life is very short!
People are weak and their lives seem useless.
Why do you make people like that?
48 Nobody can continue to live and never die.
Nobody can escape from the power of death.
49 My Lord, where is the faithful love
that you showed to us in past times?
Where are the blessings that you promised to David?
50 My Lord, look at how people are insulting me!
People from all nations laugh at me, your servant.
51 Lord , your enemies insult the king that you have chosen.
Wherever I go, they insult me!

52 Praise the Lord as he deserves!
Yes! Amen! We agree!

Footnotes

  1. 89:1 God had made special promises to David as part of a covenant. See 2 Samuel 7:12-17 . He promised that someone from David's family would always be king. In this psalm, the writer sees that all these promises have not yet become true. So the writer is sad. He wants to know if God has forgotten about his promises to David.
  2. 89:12 Tabor and Hermon are the names of mountains in Israel.

A maskil from Ethan the Ezrahite.

89 I will sing forever about the Lord ’s love.
I will sing about his faithfulness forever and ever!
2 I will say, “Your faithful love will last forever.
Your loyalty is like the sky—there is no end to it!”

3 You said, “I made an agreement with my chosen king.
I made this promise to my servant David:
4 ‘There will always be someone from your family to rule.
I will make your kingdom continue forever and ever.’” Selah

5 Lord , the heavens praise you for the amazing things you do.
The assembly of holy ones sings about your loyalty.
6 No one in heaven is equal to the Lord .
None of the “gods” can compare to the Lord .
7 When God’s holy ones—the angels around his throne—meet together,
they fear and respect him;
he is more awesome than all those around him.
8 Lord God All-Powerful, there is no one like you.
You are strong, Lord , and always faithful.
9 You rule the stormy sea.
You can calm its angry waves.
10 You defeated Rahab.
You scattered your enemies with your own powerful arm.
11 Everything in heaven and earth belongs to you.
You made the world and everything in it.
12 You created everything north and south.
Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon sing praises to your name.
13 You have the power!
Your power is great!
Victory is yours!
14 Your kingdom is built on truth and justice.
Love and faithfulness are servants before your throne.
15 Lord , your loyal followers are happy.
They live in the light of your kindness.
16 Your name always makes them happy.
They praise your goodness.
17 You are their amazing strength.
Their power comes from you.
18 The king, our protector, belongs to the Lord ,
who is the Holy One of Israel.
19 Lord, you once spoke in a vision to your followers:
“I have made a young soldier strong.
From among my people I chose him for an important position.
20 I have found my servant David
and anointed him as king with my special oil.
21 I will support him with my right hand,
and my arm will make him strong.
22 So no enemy will ever control him.
The wicked will never defeat him.
23 I will destroy his enemies before his eyes.
I will defeat those who hate him.
24 I will always love and support him.
I will always make him strong.
25 I will put him in charge of the sea.
He will control the rivers.
26 He will say to me, ‘You are my father.
You are my God, my Rock, my Savior.’
27 And I will make him my firstborn son.
He will be the great king on earth.
28 My love will protect him forever.
My agreement with him will never end.
29 I will make his family continue forever.
His kingdom will last as long as the skies.
30 If his descendants stop following my law
and stop obeying my commands,
31 if they break my laws
and ignore my commands,
32 I will punish them severely
for their sins and wrongs.
33 But I will never take my love from him.
I will never stop being loyal to him.
34 I will not break my agreement with David.
I will never change what I said.
35 By my holiness, I made a promise to him,
and I would not lie to David.
36 His family will continue forever.
His kingdom will last as long as the sun.
37 Like the moon, it will continue forever.
The sky is a witness to the agreement that can be trusted.” Selah

38 But now, Lord, you have become angry with your chosen king, [ a ]
and you have left him all alone.
39 You ended the agreement you made with your servant.
You threw the king’s crown into the dirt.
40 You pulled down the walls of his city.
You destroyed all his fortresses.
41 Everyone passing by steals from him.
His neighbors laugh at him.
42 You made all the king’s enemies happy
and let his enemies win the war.
43 You helped them defend themselves.
You did not help your king win the battle.
44 You did not let him win.
You threw his throne to the ground.
45 You cut his life short.
You shamed him. Selah

46 Lord , how long will this continue?
Will you ignore us forever?
Will your anger burn like a fire forever?
47 Remember how short my life is.
You created us to live a short life and then die.
48 Is there anyone alive who will never die?
Will anyone escape the grave? Selah

49 Lord, where is the love you showed in the past?
You promised David that you would be loyal to his family.
50-51 My Lord, please remember how people insulted your servant.
Lord , I had to listen to all the insults from your enemies.
They insulted your chosen king wherever he went.

52 Praise the Lord forever!
Amen and Amen!

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 89:38 chosen king Literally, “anointed one.”

89 I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.

2 For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens.

3 I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant,

4 Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.

5 And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O Lord : thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints.

6 For who in the heaven can be compared unto the Lord ? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the Lord ?

7 God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.

8 O Lord God of hosts, who is a strong Lord like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?

9 Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them.

10 Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain; thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm.

11 The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them.

12 The north and the south thou hast created them: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name.

13 Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand.

14 Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.

15 Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord , in the light of thy countenance.

16 In thy name shall they rejoice all the day: and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted.

17 For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy favour our horn shall be exalted.

18 For the Lord is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king.

19 Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people.

20 I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:

21 With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him.

22 The enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him.

23 And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him.

24 But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted.

25 I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.

26 He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.

27 Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.

28 My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him.

29 His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.

30 If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments;

31 If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments;

32 Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

33 Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.

34 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

35 Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David.

36 His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me.

37 It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.

38 But thou hast cast off and abhorred, thou hast been wroth with thine anointed.

39 Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.

40 Thou hast broken down all his hedges; thou hast brought his strong holds to ruin.

41 All that pass by the way spoil him: he is a reproach to his neighbours.

42 Thou hast set up the right hand of his adversaries; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice.

43 Thou hast also turned the edge of his sword, and hast not made him to stand in the battle.

44 Thou hast made his glory to cease, and cast his throne down to the ground.

45 The days of his youth hast thou shortened: thou hast covered him with shame. Selah.

46 How long, Lord ? wilt thou hide thyself for ever? shall thy wrath burn like fire?

47 Remember how short my time is: wherefore hast thou made all men in vain?

48 What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah.

49 Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses, which thou swarest unto David in thy truth?

50 Remember, Lord, the reproach of thy servants; how I do bear in my bosom the reproach of all the mighty people;

51 Wherewith thine enemies have reproached, O Lord ; wherewith they have reproached the footsteps of thine anointed.

52 Blessed be the Lord for evermore. Amen, and Amen.

The Lord s Covenant with David and Israel’s Afflictions.

A [ a ] Maskil of [ b ] Ethan [ c ] the Ezrahite.

89 I will ( A ) sing of the graciousness of the Lord forever;
To all generations I will ( B ) make Your ( C ) faithfulness known with my mouth.
2 For I have said, “ ( D ) Graciousness will be built up forever;
In the heavens You will establish Your ( E ) faithfulness.”
3 “I have made a covenant with ( F ) My chosen;
I have ( G ) sworn to My servant David,
4 I will establish your [ d ] ( H ) descendants forever
And build up your ( I ) throne to all generations.” Selah

5 The ( J ) heavens will praise Your wonders, Lord ;
Your faithfulness also ( K ) in the assembly of the ( L ) holy ones.
6 For ( M ) who in the skies is comparable to the Lord ?
Who among the [ e ] ( N ) sons of the mighty is like the Lord ,
7 A God ( O ) greatly feared in the council of the ( P ) holy ones,
And ( Q ) awesome above all those who are around Him?
8 Lord God of armies, ( R ) who is like You, mighty [ f ] Lord ?
Your faithfulness also surrounds You.
9 You rule the surging of the sea;
When its waves rise, You ( S ) calm them.
10 You Yourself crushed [ g ] ( T ) Rahab like one who is slain;
You ( U ) scattered Your enemies with [ h ] Your mighty arm.

11 The ( V ) heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours;
The ( W ) world and [ i ] all it contains, You have established them.
12 The ( X ) north and the south, You have created them;
( Y ) Tabor and ( Z ) Hermon ( AA ) shout for joy at Your name.
13 You have [ j ] a strong arm;
Your hand is mighty, Your ( AB ) right hand is exalted.
14 ( AC ) Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;
( AD ) Mercy and [ k ] truth go before You.
15 Blessed are the people who know the [ l ] ( AE ) joyful sound!
Lord , they walk in the ( AF ) light of Your face.
16 In ( AG ) Your name they rejoice all the day,
And by Your righteousness they are exalted.
17 For You are the glory of ( AH ) their strength,
And by Your favor [ m ] our ( AI ) horn is exalted.
18 For our ( AJ ) shield belongs to the Lord ,
[ n ] And our king to the ( AK ) Holy One of Israel.

19 [ o ] Once You spoke in vision to Your godly [ p ] ones,
And said, “I have [ q ] given help to one who is ( AL ) mighty;
I have exalted one ( AM ) chosen from the people.
20 I have ( AN ) found My servant David;
With My holy ( AO ) oil I have anointed him,
21 With whom ( AP ) My hand will be established;
My arm also will ( AQ ) strengthen him.
22 The enemy will not [ r ] deceive him,
Nor will the [ s ] ( AR ) son of wickedness afflict him.
23 But I will ( AS ) crush his adversaries before him,
And strike those who hate him.
24 My ( AT ) faithfulness and My favor will be with him,
And in My name his ( AU ) horn will be exalted.
25 I will also place his hand ( AV ) on the sea,
And his right hand on the rivers.
26 He will call to Me, ‘You are ( AW ) my Father,
My God, and the ( AX ) rock of my salvation.’
27 I will also make him My ( AY ) firstborn,
The ( AZ ) highest of the kings of the earth.
28 I will maintain My ( BA ) favor for him forever,
And My ( BB ) covenant shall be confirmed to him.
29 So I will establish his [ t ] ( BC ) descendants forever,
And his ( BD ) throne ( BE ) as the days of heaven.

30 “If his sons ( BF ) abandon My Law
And do not walk in My judgments,
31 If they [ u ] violate My statutes
And do not keep My commandments,
32 Then I will punish their wrongdoing with the ( BG ) rod,
And their guilt with [ v ] afflictions.
33 But I will not [ w ] withhold ( BH ) My favor from him,
Nor deal falsely in My faithfulness.
34 I will not [ x ] violate My ( BI ) covenant,
Nor will I ( BJ ) alter [ y ] the utterance of My lips.
35 [ z ] Once I have ( BK ) sworn by My holiness;
I will not lie to David.
36 His [ aa ] ( BL ) descendants shall endure forever,
And his ( BM ) throne ( BN ) as the sun before Me.
37 It shall be established forever ( BO ) like the moon,
And a ( BP ) witness in the sky is faithful.” Selah

38 But You have ( BQ ) rejected and ( BR ) refused,
You have been full of wrath [ ab ] against Your ( BS ) anointed.
39 You have [ ac ] ( BT ) repudiated the covenant of Your servant;
You have ( BU ) profaned ( BV ) his crown [ ad ] in the dust.
40 You have ( BW ) broken down all his walls;
You have ( BX ) brought his strongholds to ruin.
41 ( BY ) All who pass along the way plunder him;
He has become a ( BZ ) disgrace to his neighbors.
42 You have ( CA ) exalted the right hand of his adversaries;
You have ( CB ) made all his enemies rejoice.
43 You also turn back the edge of his sword,
And have ( CC ) not made him stand in battle.
44 You have put an end to his [ ae ] ( CD ) splendor
And cast his throne to the ground.
45 You have ( CE ) shortened the days of his youth;
You have ( CF ) covered him with shame. Selah

46 ( CG ) How long, Lord ?
Will You hide Yourself forever?
Will Your ( CH ) wrath burn like fire?
47 ( CI ) Remember [ af ] what my lifespan is;
For what ( CJ ) futility [ ag ] You have created all the sons of mankind!
48 What man can live and not ( CK ) see death?
Can he ( CL ) save his soul from the [ ah ] power of [ ai ] Sheol? Selah

49 Where are Your former acts of favor, Lord,
Which You ( CM ) swore to David in Your faithfulness?
50 Remember, Lord, the ( CN ) taunt against Your servants;
[ aj ] How I carry in my heart the taunts of all the many peoples,
51 With which ( CO ) Your enemies have taunted, Lord ,
With which they have taunted the footsteps of ( CP ) Your anointed.

52 ( CQ ) Blessed be the Lord forever!
Amen and Amen.

that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself. ( C )

I have sworn to David my servant,
4 ‘I will establish your line forever

your faithfulness too, in the assembly ( F ) of the holy ones.

You, Lord , are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

9 You rule over the surging sea;
when its waves mount up, you still them. ( M )
10 You crushed Rahab ( N ) like one of the slain;
with your strong arm you scattered ( O ) your enemies.
11 The heavens are yours, ( P ) and yours also the earth; ( Q )
you founded the world and all that is in it. ( R )
12 You created the north and the south;
Tabor ( S ) and Hermon ( T ) sing for joy ( U ) at your name.
13 Your arm is endowed with power;
your hand is strong, your right hand exalted. ( V )

14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; ( W )
love and faithfulness go before you. ( X )
15 Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,
who walk ( Y ) in the light ( Z ) of your presence, Lord .
16 They rejoice in your name ( AA ) all day long;
they celebrate your righteousness.
17 For you are their glory and strength, ( AB )
and by your favor you exalt our horn. [ d ] ( AC )
18 Indeed, our shield [ e ] ( AD ) belongs to the Lord ,
our king ( AE ) to the Holy One of Israel.

19 Once you spoke in a vision,
to your faithful people you said:
“I have bestowed strength on a warrior;
I have raised up a young man from among the people.
20 I have found David ( AF ) my servant; ( AG )
with my sacred oil ( AH ) I have anointed ( AI ) him.
21 My hand will sustain him;
surely my arm will strengthen him. ( AJ )
22 The enemy will not get the better of him; ( AK )
the wicked will not oppress ( AL ) him.
23 I will crush his foes before him ( AM )

28 I will maintain my love to him forever,
and my covenant with him will never fail. ( AW )
29 I will establish his line forever,
his throne as long as the heavens endure. ( AX )

30 “If his sons forsake my law
and do not follow my statutes,
31 if they violate my decrees
and fail to keep my commands,
32 I will punish their sin with the rod,
their iniquity with flogging; ( AY )
33 but I will not take my love from him, ( AZ )
nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.
34 I will not violate my covenant
or alter what my lips have uttered. ( BA )
35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness—
and I will not lie to David—
36 that his line will continue forever
and his throne endure before me like the sun; ( BB )
37 it will be established forever like the moon,
the faithful witness in the sky.” ( BC )

38 But you have rejected, ( BD ) you have spurned,
you have been very angry with your anointed one.
39 You have renounced the covenant with your servant
and have defiled his crown in the dust. ( BE )
