Psalm 31

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

Lord , please help me!

31 Lord , I have come to you to keep me safe.
Never let me become ashamed.
You always do what is right
so please save me!
2 Listen to me,
and quickly send help to me.
Lord , be a rock where I can hide.
Be a strong place to keep me safe.
3 You are my high rock and my strong place.
Because of your good name,
lead me and be my guide. [ a ]
4 You are the place where I can hide,
so keep me safe.
Do not let my enemies' traps catch me.
5 I put my life into your hands.
I know that you will save me, Lord ,
because you are a God that I can trust.

6 I hate people who worship useless idols.
As for me, I trust in the Lord .
7 I am very happy because of your faithful love.
You see when I suffer.
You know when I am very upset.
8 You have not put me under the power of my enemies.
You have led me into an open place,
where I can be safe.

9 Lord , I am very upset,
so please be kind to me.
My eyes are tired because I weep so much.
My whole body has become very weak.
10 I am near to death, because I am so sad.
I am crying with pain as my life comes to an end.
I have so much trouble
that I have no strength at all.
Even my bones have become weak.
11 All my enemies hate me.
My friends insult me.
Everyone who knows me is afraid of me.
They run away when they see me in the street.
12 Everybody has forgotten about me.
I might as well be dead!
They think that I am useless,
like a broken plate.
13 I hear what many people are saying against me.
News from everywhere makes me afraid.
They are deciding together
how to kill me.

14 But I continue to trust you, Lord .
I say, ‘You are my God!’ [ b ]
15 You are the one who decides
what will happen to me in my whole life.
Save me from the power of my enemies
and from the people who want to catch me.
16 Turn towards me, your servant,
and be kind to me!
Keep me safe,
because of your faithful love.
17 Lord , do not let me become ashamed.
I call to you for help.
Cause evil people to become ashamed.
Let them go to their graves
and be silent there!
18 May people that tell lies become silent.
They insult righteous people.
They are proud people,
and they boast about themselves.

19 You have prepared many good things
to bless people who respect you.
While everyone watches,
you bless those who come to you for help.
20 You give them a place to hide,
and you keep them safe with you.
When their enemies want to attack them,
you take care of them.
When their enemies speak lies against them,
they are safe with you.
21 Praise the Lord !
When my enemies were all around me,
he showed me that his faithful love is very great.
22 When I was afraid, I said,
‘God is no longer with me!’
But I spoke too soon.
When I called to you for help,
you heard me and you answered me.

23 Love the Lord , all you people who belong to him!
If people serve the Lord faithfully,
he keeps them safe.
But if people are proud,
he punishes them as they deserve.
24 All you people who trust the Lord to help you,
you should be strong and very brave!

Footnotes

  1. 31:3 God's ‘good name’ means what people know about who he is.
  2. 31:14 David was very afraid. As a result, he became ill. He even thought that he would soon die. But David still trusted in the Lord .

To the director: A song of David.

31 Lord , I come to you for protection.
Don’t let me be disappointed.
You always do what is right, so save me.
2 Listen to me.
Come quickly and save me.
Be my Rock, my place of safety.
Be my fortress and protect me!
3 Yes, you are my Rock and my protection.
For the good of your name, lead me and guide me.
4 Save me from the traps my enemy has set.
You are my place of safety.
5 Lord , you are the God we can trust.
I put my life [ a ] in your hands.
Save me!
6 I hate those who worship false gods.
I trust only in the Lord .
7 Your kindness makes me so happy.
You have seen my suffering.
You know about the troubles I have.
8 You will not let my enemies take me.
You will free me from their traps.
9 Lord , I have many troubles, so be kind to me.
I have cried until my eyes hurt.
My throat and stomach are aching.
10 Because of my sin, my life is ending in grief;
my years are passing away in sighs of pain.
My life is ending in weakness.
My strength is draining away.
11 My enemies despise me,
and even my neighbors have turned away.
When my friends see me in the street,
they turn the other way.
They are afraid to be around me.
12 People want to forget me like someone already dead,
thrown away like a broken dish.
13 I hear them whispering about me.
They have turned against me and plan to kill me.

14 Lord , I trust in you.
You are my God.
15 My life is in your hands.
Save me from those who are persecuting me.
16 Please welcome and accept your servant. [ b ]
Be kind to me and save me.
17 Lord , I am praying to you.
Don’t let me be disappointed.
The wicked are the ones who should be disappointed.
Let them go to the grave in silence.
18 Those evil people brag
and tell lies about those who do right.
They are so proud now,
but their lying lips will be silent.

19 Lord, you have hidden away many wonderful things for your followers.
You have done so many good things for those who trust in you.
You have blessed them so that all the world can see.
20 Others make plans to hurt them.
They say such bad things about them.
But you hide your people in your shelter and protect them.
21 Praise the Lord , because he showed me how wonderful his faithful love is
when the city was surrounded by enemies.
22 I was afraid and said, “I am in a place where he cannot see me.”
But I prayed to you, and you heard my loud cries for help.

23 Love the Lord , all of you who are his loyal followers.
The Lord protects those who are loyal to him.
But he punishes those who brag about their own power.
He gives them all the punishment they deserve.
24 Be strong and brave,
all of you who are waiting for the Lord ’s help.

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 31:5 life Literally, “spirit.”
  2. Psalm 31:16 Please … servant Literally, “Let your face shine on your servant.”

31 In thee, O Lord , do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.

2 Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.

3 For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me.

4 Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength.

5 Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth.

6 I have hated them that regard lying vanities: but I trust in the Lord .

7 I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities;

8 And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.

9 Have mercy upon me, O Lord , for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly.

10 For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed.

11 I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me.

12 I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.

13 For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.

14 But I trusted in thee, O Lord : I said, Thou art my God.

15 My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.

16 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercies' sake.

17 Let me not be ashamed, O Lord ; for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.

18 Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.

19 Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!

20 Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.

21 Blessed be the Lord : for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city.

22 For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes: nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.

23 O love the Lord , all ye his saints: for the Lord preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.

24 Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord .

A Psalm of Complaint and of Praise.

For the music director. A Psalm of David.

31 ( A ) In You, Lord , I have taken refuge;
Let me never ( B ) be [ a ] put to shame;
( C ) In Your righteousness rescue me.
2 ( D ) Incline Your ear to me, rescue me quickly;
Be a ( E ) rock of [ b ] strength for me,
A [ c ] stronghold to save me.
3 For You are my rock and ( F ) my fortress;
For the ( G ) sake of Your name You will lead me and guide me.
4 You will ( H ) pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me,
For You are my ( I ) strength.
5 ( J ) Into Your hand I entrust my spirit;
You have ( K ) redeemed me, Lord , ( L ) God of [ d ] truth.

6 I hate those who ( M ) devote themselves to worthless [ e ] idols,
But I ( N ) trust in the Lord .
7 I will ( O ) rejoice and be glad in Your faithfulness,
Because You have ( P ) seen my misery;
You have known the troubles of my soul,
8 And You have not ( Q ) handed me over to the enemy;
You have set my feet in a large place.

9 Be gracious to me, Lord , for ( R ) I am in distress;
My ( S ) eye is wasted away from grief, ( T ) my soul and my body too .
10 For my life is spent with ( U ) sorrow
And my years with sighing;
My ( V ) strength has failed because of my guilt,
And ( W ) my [ f ] body has wasted away.
11 Because of all my adversaries, I have become a ( X ) disgrace,
Especially to my ( Y ) neighbors,
And an object of dread to my acquaintances;
Those who see me in the street flee from me.
12 I am ( Z ) forgotten like a dead person, out of mind;
I am like a broken vessel.
13 For I have heard the [ g ] ( AA ) slander of many,
( AB ) Terror is on every side;
While they ( AC ) took counsel together against me,
They ( AD ) schemed to take away my life.

14 But as for me, I trust in You, Lord ,
I say, “ ( AE ) You are my God.”
15 My ( AF ) times are in Your hand;
( AG ) Rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from those who persecute me.
16 Make Your ( AH ) face shine upon Your servant;
( AI ) Save me in Your faithfulness.
17 Let me not be ( AJ ) put to shame, Lord , for I call upon You;
Let the ( AK ) wicked be put to shame, let them ( AL ) be silent in [ h ] Sheol.
18 Let the ( AM ) lying lips be speechless,
Which ( AN ) speak arrogantly against the righteous
With pride and contempt.

19 How great is Your ( AO ) goodness,
Which You have stored up for those who fear You,
Which You have performed for those who ( AP ) take refuge in You,
( AQ ) Before the sons of mankind!
20 You hide them in the ( AR ) secret place of Your presence from the ( AS ) conspiracies of mankind;
You keep them secretly in a [ i ] shelter from the ( AT ) strife of tongues.
21 ( AU ) Blessed be the Lord ,
For He has shown His ( AV ) marvelous faithfulness to me in a besieged ( AW ) city.
22 As for me, ( AX ) I said in my alarm,
“I am ( AY ) cut off from Your eyes”;
Nevertheless You ( AZ ) heard the sound of my pleadings
When I called to You for help.

23 Love the Lord , all ( BA ) His godly ones!
The Lord ( BB ) watches over the faithful
But fully ( BC ) repays the one who acts arrogantly.
24 ( BD ) Be strong and let your heart take courage,
All you who wait for the Lord .
