Psalm 143

This is a song that David wrote.

Please help me, Lord ! [ a ]

143 Lord , I pray to you for help.
Please listen to me.
Answer me, because you do what is right,
and I know that I can trust you.
2 Do not judge me, your servant.
Nobody is righteous when they stand in front of you.
3 My enemies are chasing me.
They knock me down to the ground.
They make me live in dark places,
like people who have been dead for a long time.
4 My strength is leaving me,
and I feel very upset.
5 I remember what happened many years ago.
I think carefully about all the good things that you have done.
6 I raise my hands to pray to you.
I need you to help me,
like dry ground needs rain.
Selah
7 Please answer me soon, Lord .
I am losing my strength.
Do not turn away from me.
If you do, I will join those people who are going down
into the deep hole of death.
8 Every morning, help me to remember your faithful love,
because I am trusting in you.
Show me how I should live to please you,
because I know that I belong to you.
9 Lord , save me from my enemies.
I run to you to keep me safe.
10 Teach me to do what pleases you,
because you are my God.
Let your kind Spirit lead me,
so that I can walk in a safe place.
11 Your name is great, Lord ,
so please keep my life safe.
You do what is right,
so bring me out of my troubles.
12 I am your servant and you always love me.
Please show how much you love me,
and destroy my enemies.
Yes, kill all those who want to kill me!

Footnotes

  1. 143:1 David wrote this psalm when he had trouble. Maybe this was when his son Absalom wanted to kill him. See 1 Samuel 15—19 .

A praise song of David.

143 Lord , hear my prayer.
Listen to my call for help and answer my prayer.
Show me how good and loyal you are.
2 Don’t judge me, your servant.
No one alive could be judged innocent by your standards.
3 My enemies are chasing me.
They have crushed me into the dirt.
They are pushing me into the dark grave,
like people who died long ago.
4 I am ready to give up.
I am losing my courage.
5 But I remember what happened long ago.
I am thinking about all you have done.
I am talking about what you made with your hands!
6 I lift my hands in prayer to you.
I am waiting for your help, like a dry land waiting for rain. Selah

7 Hurry and answer me, Lord !
I have lost my courage.
Don’t turn away from me.
Don’t let me die and become like the people lying in the grave.
8 Show me your faithful love this morning.
I trust in you.
Show me what I should do.
I put my life in your hands!
9 Lord , I come to you for protection.
Save me from my enemies.
10 Show me what you want me to do.
You are my God.
Let your good Spirit lead me over level ground.
11 Lord , let me live
so that people will praise your name.
Show me how good you are
and save me from my trouble.
12 Show me your love
and defeat my enemies.
Destroy those who are trying to kill me
because I am your servant.

143 Hear my prayer, O Lord , give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.

2 And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.

3 For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten my life down to the ground; he hath made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have been long dead.

4 Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate.

5 I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands.

6 I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.

7 Hear me speedily, O Lord : my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.

8 Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.

9 Deliver me, O Lord , from mine enemies: I flee unto thee to hide me.

10 Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.

11 Quicken me, O Lord , for thy name's sake: for thy righteousness' sake bring my soul out of trouble.

12 And of thy mercy cut off mine enemies, and destroy all them that afflict my soul: for I am thy servant.

Prayer for Help and Guidance.

A Psalm of David.

143 Hear my prayer, Lord ,
( A ) Listen to my pleadings!
Answer me in Your ( B ) faithfulness, in Your ( C ) righteousness!
2 And ( D ) do not enter into judgment with Your servant,
For ( E ) no person living is righteous in Your sight.
3 For the enemy has persecuted my soul;
He has crushed my life ( F ) to the ground;
He ( G ) has made me dwell in dark places, like those who have long been dead.
4 Therefore ( H ) my spirit [ a ] feels weak within me;
My heart is [ b ] ( I ) appalled within me.

5 I ( J ) remember the days of old;
I ( K ) meditate on all Your accomplishments;
I ( L ) reflect on the work of Your hands.
6 I ( M ) spread out my hands to You;
My ( N ) soul longs for You, like a weary land. Selah

7 ( O ) Answer me quickly, Lord , my ( P ) spirit fails;
( Q ) Do not hide Your face from me,
Or I will be the same as ( R ) those who go down to the pit.
8 Let me hear Your ( S ) faithfulness ( T ) in the morning,
For I trust ( U ) in You;
Teach me the ( V ) way in which I should walk;
For to You I ( W ) lift up my soul.
9 ( X ) Save me, Lord , from my enemies;
[ c ] I take refuge in You.

10 ( Y ) Teach me to do Your will,
For You are my God;
Let ( Z ) Your good Spirit ( AA ) lead me on level [ d ] ground.
11 ( AB ) For the sake of Your name, Lord , ( AC ) revive me.
( AD ) In Your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble.
12 And in Your faithfulness, [ e ] ( AE ) destroy my enemies,
And ( AF ) eliminate all those who attack my soul,
For ( AG ) I am Your servant.

Psalm 143

A psalm of David.

1 Lord , hear my prayer, ( A )
listen to my cry for mercy; ( B )
in your faithfulness ( C ) and righteousness ( D )
come to my relief.
2 Do not bring your servant into judgment,
for no one living is righteous ( E ) before you.
3 The enemy pursues me,
he crushes me to the ground;
he makes me dwell in the darkness ( F )
like those long dead. ( G )
4 So my spirit grows faint within me;
my heart within me is dismayed. ( H )
5 I remember ( I ) the days of long ago;
I meditate ( J ) on all your works
and consider what your hands have done.
6 I spread out my hands ( K ) to you;
I thirst for you like a parched land. [ a ]

7 Answer me quickly, ( L ) Lord ;
my spirit fails. ( M )
Do not hide your face ( N ) from me
or I will be like those who go down to the pit.

for I have put my trust in you.
Show me the way ( P ) I should go,
for to you I entrust my life. ( Q )
9 Rescue me ( R ) from my enemies, ( S ) Lord ,
for I hide myself in you.
10 Teach me ( T ) to do your will,
for you are my God; ( U )
may your good Spirit
lead ( V ) me on level ground. ( W )

11 For your name’s sake, ( X ) Lord , preserve my life; ( Y )
in your righteousness, ( Z ) bring me out of trouble.
12 In your unfailing love, silence my enemies; ( AA )
destroy all my foes, ( AB )
for I am your servant. ( AC )
