Psalm 133

A song to sing as we climb.

David wrote this song.

133 It is good for a family of God's people to live together in peace.
Yes! It brings great pleasure!
2 It brings pleasure like valuable olive oil
that is poured on your head,
and it goes down onto your beard.
They poured it onto Aaron's head and his beard,
and it went down onto his clothes. [ a ]
3 It brings pleasure like the dew on Hermon. [ b ]
It makes the mountains of Zion become wet. [ c ]
That is the place where the Lord has promised to bless his people.
He blesses them with life for ever.

Footnotes

  1. 133:2 Aaron was Moses' brother. He was the first priest that God chose to serve him. When the Israelites chose a new priest, they poured olive oil on his head to show that he was a special servant of God.
  2. 133:3 Dew is water that comes onto the ground at night. It helps plants to grow when there is no rain. Hermon is in the north of the land of Israel.
  3. 133:3 Zion was the hill in Jerusalem where they built God's Temple.

A song of David for going up to the Temple.

133 Oh, how wonderful, how pleasing it is
when God’s people all come together as one [ a ] !
2 It is like the sweet-smelling oil that is poured over the high priest’s [ b ] head,
that runs down his beard flowing over his robes.
3 It is like a gentle rain [ c ] from Mount Hermon falling on Mount Zion.
It is there that the Lord has promised his blessing of eternal life.

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 133:1 when … as one Or “when brothers live together in peace.”
  2. Psalm 133:2 high priest’s Literally, “Aaron’s.”
  3. Psalm 133:3 gentle rain Or “mist” or “snow.” The Hebrew can mean either “the oil is like the mist …” or “Aaron’s beard is like the snow ….”

133 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;

3 As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.

The Excellency of Brotherly Unity.

A Song of Ascents, of David.

133 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For ( A ) brothers to live together in unity!
2 It is like the precious ( B ) oil on the head,
Running down upon the beard,
As on Aaron’s beard,
The oil which ran down upon the ( C ) edge of his robes.
3 It is like the ( D ) dew of ( E ) Hermon
Coming down upon the ( F ) mountains of Zion;
For the Lord ( G ) commanded the blessing there— ( H ) life forever.

Psalm 133

A song of ascents. Of David.

1 How good and pleasant it is

2 It is like precious oil poured on the head, ( C )
running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard,
down on the collar of his robe.
3 It is as if the dew ( D ) of Hermon ( E )
were falling on Mount Zion. ( F )
For there the Lord bestows his blessing, ( G )
