Psalm 131

A song to sing as we climb.

David wrote this song.

131 Lord , I am not proud.
I do not think that I am a great person.
I do not try to do great things.
I do not worry about things that are too hard for me to understand.
2 Instead, I am quiet
and there is peace in my mind.
I am like a young child who sits on his mother's knee.
Yes, I have peace in my mind.

3 Israel's people, trust the Lord to help you,
now and for ever.

A song of David for going up to the Temple.

131 Lord , I don’t feel proud.
I don’t see myself as better than others.
I am not thinking about doing great things
or reaching impossible goals.
2 No, right now I am calm and quiet,
like a child after nursing,
content in its mother’s arms. [ a ]

3 Israel, trust in the Lord .
Trust in him now and forever!

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 131:2 like a child … arms Or “like a baby on its mother’s back, like a baby on my back, so is my soul.” The metaphor may refer to the custom of a working mother tying her baby on her back after nursing.

131 Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.

2 Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.

3 Let Israel hope in the Lord from henceforth and for ever.

Childlike Trust in the Lord .

A Song of Ascents, of David.

131 Lord , my heart is not ( A ) proud, nor my eyes ( B ) arrogant;
Nor do I [ a ] involve myself in ( C ) great matters,
Or in things ( D ) too [ b ] difficult for me.
2 I have certainly ( E ) soothed and quieted my soul;
Like a weaned ( F ) child resting [ c ] against his mother,
My soul [ d ] within me is like a weaned child.
3 Israel, ( G ) wait for the Lord
( H ) From this time on and forever.
