Psalm 128

A song to sing as we climb.

A happy family

128 If people respect the Lord
and they obey his commands,
God has blessed them!
2 You will eat the food that you have worked hard to grow.
You will have everything that you need.
You will be happy!
3 Your wife will be like a vine that grows in your home,
and it gives many grapes.
Your children will sit around your table,
like the branches of an olive tree that are around you. [ a ]
4 Yes, if a man respects the Lord ,
that is how God blesses him.
5 The Lord rules from Zion,
and I pray that he will bless you. [ b ]
Then you will see that Jerusalem is a good place to live in
for as long as you live.
6 I pray that you will live to see your grandchildren.
May Israel have peace!

Footnotes

  1. 128:3 Both word pictures mean that you will have a happy family, with many children. An olive tree has many branches.
  2. 128:5 Solomon built God's house, the temple, on Mount Zion in Jerusalem. For many Christians, Zion is a picture of heaven, where God lives.

A song for going up to the Temple.

128 Great blessings belong to those who fear and respect the Lord
and live the way he wants.

2 You will get what you work for.
You will enjoy the Lord’s blessings, and all will go well for you.
3 At home, your wife will have many children, like a vine full of grapes.
The children around your table will be like an orchard full of olive trees.
4 Yes, the Lord will really bless those who respect him.
5 May the Lord bless you from Mount Zion.
May you enjoy the blessings of Jerusalem all your life.
6 And may you live to see your grandchildren.

Let Israel always enjoy peace!

128 Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord ; that walketh in his ways.

2 For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.

3 Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.

4 Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord .

5 The Lord shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life.

6 Yea, thou shalt see thy children's children, and peace upon Israel.
