Psalm 108

This psalm is a song that David wrote.

A prayer for help [ a ]

108 God, I have decided to trust you always.
I will sing songs to praise you,
with all that I am.
2 I will pick up my harp and my lyre.
I will make music as the sun rises!
3 Lord , I will thank you in front of all the people.
I will sing to praise you,
so that all nations hear.
4 Your faithful love is great.
It is higher than the skies.
Your truth reaches beyond the clouds.
5 God, show how great you are,
high above the sky!
Let everybody on the earth see your glory.
6 Use your power to rescue us!
Answer our prayers!
Then the people that you love will be safe.
7 God has spoken from his holy place! [ b ]
He has promised:
‘I will show my power!
I will make Shechem into separate pieces.
I will measure Succoth Valley.
8 Gilead belongs to me,
and so does Manasseh.
Ephraim is like my helmet for war.
Judah has the authority of my royal sceptre. [ c ]
9 But Moab is the place where I wash my hands.
Edom is my servant.
I can throw my shoes at him!
I will shout aloud,
because I have won against the Philistines.’ [ d ]

10 Who will lead me into the strong city?
Who will take me to fight and win against Edom? [ e ]
11 God, have you really turned against us?
Will you not lead our armies into battle?
12 Help us to fight against our enemies,
because help from men is useless!
13 With God's help, we will win!
He will beat down our enemies for us.

Footnotes

  1. 108:1 In this psalm, the first 5 verses come from Psalm 57 and the last 8 verses come from Psalm 60.
    Instead of writing a new psalm, the writer put together parts of two psalms that David wrote. In Psalm 57, David thanked God for helping him to fight his enemies. In Psalm 60, those enemies were Babylon and Edom.
  2. 108:7 The holy place is God's home. Perhaps it was the temple in Jerusalem, or God's home in heaven.
  3. 108:8 The first six places were all parts of Israel. They all belong to God. He will decide what to do with them. They will have important jobs, like Ephraim as a soldier and Judah as a judge.
  4. 108:9 Moab, Edom and the Philistines were all enemies of Israel. God will use them like his servants, to do what he wants.
  5. 108:10 From verse 10 to the end, David is speaking again.

A praise song of David.

108 God, I am ready, heart and soul,
to sing songs of praise.
Wake up, my soul!
2 Harps and lyres, wake up,
and let’s wake the dawn!
3 Lord , I will praise you before all people.
I will sing praises about you to every nation.
4 Your faithful love is higher
than the highest clouds in the sky!
5 Rise above the heavens, God.
Let all the world see your glory.
6 Use your great power and help us!
Answer my prayer and save the people you love.

7 God has made this promise in his Temple [ a ] :
“I will win the war and rejoice in victory!
I will divide this land among my people.
I will give them Shechem.
I will give them Succoth Valley.
8 Gilead and Manasseh will be mine.
Ephraim will be my helmet.
Judah will be my royal scepter.
9 Moab will be the bowl for washing my feet.
Edom will be the slave who carries my sandals.
I will defeat the Philistines and shout in victory!”

10-11 But, God, it seems that you have left us!
You do not go out with our army.
So who will lead me into the strong, protected city?
Who will lead me into battle against Edom?
12 Help us defeat the enemy!
No one on earth can rescue us.
13 Only God can make us strong.
Only God can defeat our enemies!

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 108:7 in his Temple Or “in his holiness.”

108 O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory.

2 Awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.

3 I will praise thee, O Lord , among the people: and I will sing praises unto thee among the nations.

4 For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth reacheth unto the clouds.

5 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: and thy glory above all the earth;

6 That thy beloved may be delivered: save with thy right hand, and answer me.

7 God hath spoken in his holiness; I will rejoice, I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth.

8 Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver;

9 Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe; over Philistia will I triumph.

10 Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom?

11 Wilt not thou, O God, who hast cast us off? and wilt not thou, O God, go forth with our hosts?

12 Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.

13 Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.

God Praised and Pleas to Give Victory.

5 ( D ) Be exalted above the heavens, God,
And may Your glory be above all the earth.
6 ( E ) So that Your beloved may be rescued,

And measure out the Valley of Succoth.
8 Gilead is Mine, Manasseh is Mine;
Ephraim also is the [ c ] helmet of My head;
( F ) Judah is My [ d ] scepter.
9 Moab is My washbowl;
I will throw My sandal over Edom;
I will shout aloud over Philistia.”

10 ( G ) Who will bring me into the fortified city?
Who [ e ] will lead me to Edom?
11 God, have You Yourself not ( H ) rejected us?
And will You not go forth with our armies, God?
