Psalm 103

This is a song that David wrote.

The love of God [ a ]

103 I say to myself, ‘Praise the Lord !’
Everything that is in me, praise his holy name!
2 I say to myself, ‘Praise the Lord !’
Never forget all the good things that he has done for you!
3 He forgives all my sins.
He makes me well again when I am ill.
4 He saves me from the deep hole of death's power.
He always loves me and he is kind to me.
That is how he blesses me so much!
5 He gives me many good things for my life here.
So I become strong again, with the strength of a young eagle.
6 The Lord does what is right and fair.
He helps poor people who suffer.
7 He showed Moses how he works to help his people.
He showed the Israelites the great things that he could do.
8 The Lord is kind to people and he forgives them.
He is slow to get angry and his love always continues.
9 He will not always tell us that we are wrong.
He will not always continue to be angry.
10 We should receive much punishment for the bad things that we do.
But the Lord does not punish us so much.
11 For people who worship him, his faithful love is very great.
How far is the sky above the earth? His love is greater than that!
12 How far is the east from the west?
The Lord has taken our sins further away than that!
He no longer says that we are guilty.
13 As a father is kind to his children, the Lord is kind to us.
He is kind to people who worship him.
14 He knows that we are weak humans.
He remembers that he used dust to make us.
15 A person's life is like grass that quickly dies.
He is strong only for a short time, like wild flowers in a field.
16 A hot wind blows over flowers and they die!
Nobody even remembers where they were growing.
17 But the faithful love of the Lord
will always be with people who worship him.
He promises to be kind to their children's children for ever.
18 He continues to love people who obey his covenant.
Those are the people who obey his laws.
19 The Lord rules from his throne in heaven.
He rules as king over everything.
20 You who are the Lord 's angels,
you strong angels who do what he tells you to do,
praise the Lord !
21 All of you who belong to his armies in heaven,
his servants who do what he wants,
praise the Lord !
22 Yes, everything that the Lord has made,
in all the places that he rules over,
praise the Lord !

I say to myself, ‘Praise the Lord !’

Footnotes

  1. 103:1 The psalm has three parts: Verses 1-5: David praises the Lord . Verses 6-18: the special love of the Lord for his people. Verses 19-22: the angels and everything that the Lord has made should praise him.

A song of David.

103 My soul, praise the Lord !
Every part of me, praise his holy name!
2 My soul, praise the Lord
and never forget how kind he is!
3 He forgives all our sins
and heals all our sicknesses.
4 He saves us from the grave,
and he gives us love and compassion.
5 He gives us plenty of good things.
He makes us young again,
like an eagle that grows new feathers.
6 The Lord does what is fair.
He brings justice to all who have been hurt by others.
7 He taught his laws to Moses.
He let Israel see the powerful things he can do.
8 The Lord is kind and merciful.
He is patient and full of love.
9 He does not always criticize.
He does not stay angry with us forever.
10 We sinned against him,
but he didn’t give us the punishment we deserved.
11 His love for his followers is
as high above us as heaven is above the earth.
12 And he has taken our sins
as far away from us as the east is from the west.
13 The Lord is as kind to his followers
as a father is to his children.
14 He knows all about us.
He knows we are made from dust.
15 He knows our lives are short, that they are like grass.
He knows we are like a little wildflower that grows so quickly,
16 but when the hot wind blows, it dies.
Soon, you cannot even see where the flower was.
17 But the Lord has always loved his followers,
and he will continue to love them forever and ever!
He will be good to all their descendants,
18 to those who are faithful to his agreement
and who remember to obey his commands.
19 The Lord set his throne up in heaven,
and he rules over everything.
20 Angels, praise the Lord !
You angels are the powerful soldiers who obey his commands.
You listen to him and obey his commands.
21 Praise the Lord , all his armies. [ a ]
You are his servants,
and you do what he wants.
22 Everything the Lord has made should praise him
throughout the world that he rules!
My soul, praise the Lord !

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 103:21 armies This word can mean “armies,” “angels,” or the “stars and planets.” This word is part of the name translated “ Lord All-Powerful.” It shows that God is in control of all the powers in the universe.

103 Bless the Lord , O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

2 Bless the Lord , O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.

6 The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.

7 He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.

8 The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.

9 He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.

10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.

12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.

14 For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.

15 As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.

16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.

17 But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children;

18 To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.

19 The Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.

20 Bless the Lord , ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.

21 Bless ye the Lord , all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.

22 Bless the Lord , all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the Lord , O my soul.

Praise for the Lord s Mercies.

A Psalm of David.

And all that is within me, bless His ( B ) holy name.
2 Bless the Lord , my soul,
And ( C ) do not forget any of His benefits;
3 Who ( D ) pardons all your guilt,
Who ( E ) heals all your diseases;
4 Who ( F ) redeems your life from the pit,
Who ( G ) crowns you with favor and compassion;
5 Who ( H ) satisfies your [ a ] years with good things,
So that your youth is ( I ) renewed like the eagle.

6 The Lord ( J ) performs [ b ] righteous deeds
And judgments for all who are ( K ) oppressed.
7 He ( L ) made known His ways to Moses,
His ( M ) deeds to the sons of Israel.
8 The Lord is ( N ) compassionate and gracious,
( O ) Slow to anger and abounding in mercy.
9 He ( P ) will not always contend with us ,
Nor will He ( Q ) keep His anger forever.
10 He has ( R ) not dealt with us according to our sins,
Nor rewarded us according to our guilty deeds.
11 For as high ( S ) as the heavens are above the earth,
So great is His mercy toward those who [ c ] fear Him.
12 As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He ( T ) removed our wrongdoings from us.
13 Just ( U ) as a father has compassion on his children,
So the Lord has compassion on those who [ d ] fear Him.
14 For ( V ) He Himself knows [ e ] our form;
He ( W ) is mindful that we are nothing but ( X ) dust.

15 As for man, his days are ( Y ) like grass;
Like a ( Z ) flower of the field, so he flourishes.
16 When the ( AA ) wind has passed over it, it is no more,
And its ( AB ) place no longer knows about it.
17 But the [ f ] ( AC ) mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting for those who [ g ] fear Him,
And His justice ( AD ) to the children’s children,
18 To ( AE ) those who keep His covenant
And remember His precepts, so as to do them.

19 The Lord has established His ( AF ) throne in the heavens,
And His [ h ] ( AG ) sovereignty rules over [ i ] all.

( AI ) Mighty in strength, who ( AJ ) perform His word,
( AK ) Obeying the voice of His word!
21 Bless the Lord , all you ( AL ) His [ j ] angels,
You ( AM ) who serve Him, doing His will.
