Numbers 6

People who make special promises to the Lord

6 The Lord said to Moses, 2 ‘Tell the Israelites this: “A man or a woman may want to make a special promise to the Lord . That will make him or her separate from other people, as a Nazirite. [ a ] 3 They must not drink wine. They must not drink any alcohol or vinegar. They must not drink the juice of grapes, or eat grapes or raisins. 4 They must not eat the seeds of grapes for all the time that they are Nazirites. They must not even eat the skins of grapes.

5 A person must not cut his hair during the time that he is a Nazirite. He must be different all the time that he is separate for the Lord . He must let the hair on his head grow long. 6 He must not go near a dead body while he is separate for the Lord . 7 His hair shows that he is separate for God. So he must not go near a dead body. He must not go near it even if the dead person is his father, mother, brother or sister. 8 During the time that the person is a Nazirite, they are holy because they belong to the Lord .

9 The Nazirite may be near to a person when that person dies suddenly. Then his head becomes unclean. He must remove all the hair from his head seven days after the person dies. Then he will be clean. 10 On day 8, he must bring two doves or two young pigeons to the door of the Tent of Meeting. He must give them to the priest. 11 The priest must sacrifice one bird as a sin offering and the other bird as a burnt offering. The priest must do that because the Nazirite sinned. He went too near to a dead body. That will make the Nazirite's head clean again on that same day. 12 He must begin his time as a Nazirite again, with a new promise to the Lord . He cannot include the days before he became unclean. He must bring a male lamb that is one year old. That is a guilt offering.

13 He is a Nazirite for a certain time. When that time finishes, the people must bring him to the door of the Tent of Meeting. 14 He must offer to the Lord three animals that have nothing wrong with them. He must offer a young male sheep that is one year old. That is a burnt offering. He must offer a young female sheep that is one year old. That is a sin offering. He must offer a male sheep. That is a friendship offering. 15 And he must bring a basket of bread that people have made without yeast. He must bring cakes that people have made with the best flour and oil. Also, he must bring thin biscuits with oil on them. But they must not have yeast in them either. He must bring the proper grain offerings and drink offerings with them.

16 The priest must offer those things to the Lord . And he must sacrifice the sin offering and the burnt offering. 17 Then the priest must sacrifice the male sheep as a friendship offering to the Lord . He must offer the basket of bread. He must give the grain offering and the drink offering with it.

18 Then the Nazirite must stand at the place where people go into the Tent of Meeting. He must remove all the hair from his head. He must put his hair into the same fire where the priest has cooked the friendship offering.

19 When the male sheep is cooked, the priest must take its shoulder. Also, he must take one cake and one thin biscuit from the basket. The cake and the biscuit must not have yeast in them. The priest must put these things into the hands of the Nazirite who has removed the hair from his head. 20 The Nazirite must give those things back to the priest. The priest must lift them up to the Lord as a special gift. They are a special gift for the priest. Also, the priest can eat the front part of the sheep and its back leg. After that, the Nazirite can drink wine.”

21 Those are the rules about Nazirites. Also, the Nazirite may give anything else that he can give. And he must bring any other gift that he promised to the Lord .’

The priests' blessing

22 The Lord said to Moses, 23 ‘Tell Aaron and his sons to use these words when they ask me to bless the Israelites.

24 They must say:

“I pray that the Lord will bless you.
I pray that he will keep you safe.
25 I pray that the Lord will smile at you.
And I pray that he will be very kind to you.
26 I pray that the Lord will be pleased with you.
And I pray that he will give you peace in your minds.”

27 Aaron and his sons must use my name to bless the Israelites. If they do that, I will certainly bless them.’

Footnotes

  1. 6:2 Nazirites were a separate group of Israelites, but they were not priests.

Nazirites

6 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Tell the Israelites this: If there are people, men or women, who want to make a vow dedicating themselves to the Lord as Nazirites for a time, this is what they must do: 3 They must stay away from wine or other strong drink. They must not drink vinegar that is made from wine or from other strong drink. They must not drink grape juice or eat grapes or raisins. 4 During that special time of dedication, they must not eat anything that comes from grapes. They must not even eat the seeds or the skins from grapes.

5 “The whole time of their Nazirite vow they must not cut their hair. They must be holy until this time of special dedication to the Lord is ended. They must let their hair grow long.

6 “If you have taken the Nazirite vow, you must not go near someone who is dying [ a ] during that special time of dedication. You have given yourself fully to the Lord , 7 so you must not let yourself become unclean like this—even for your own father or mother, brother or sister when they die. [ b ] This is because you have the hair that you dedicated to God on your head! 8 It is holy because you have given yourself fully to the Lord for the full time of that dedication. 9 So if you are with someone when they suddenly die, you will be unclean and you will have to shave the hair from your head. You must do that on the seventh day of your purification ceremony when you are made clean. 10 Then on the eighth day, you must bring two doves or two young pigeons and give them to the priest at the entrance of the Meeting Tent. 11 Then the priest will offer one bird as a sin offering and the other one as a burnt offering. The burnt offering will be a payment for the sin of touching a dead body during your special time of dedication. Then you must again promise to give the hair on your head as a gift to God. 12 This means you must again give yourself to the Lord for another time of dedication. You must bring a one-year-old male lamb to offer as a guilt offering. You must start over from the beginning with a new time of dedication because you touched a dead body during your first time of dedication.

13 “After their time of dedication is ended, Nazirites must go to the entrance of the Meeting Tent 14 and give their offering to the Lord . Their offering must be:

a one-year-old male lamb that has nothing wrong with it for a burnt offering;

a one-year-old female lamb that has nothing wrong with it for a sin offering;

one ram that has nothing wrong with it for a fellowship offering;

15 a basket of bread made without yeast—bread made with fine flour mixed with oil and wafers with oil spread on top;

and the grain offerings and drink offerings that are a part of these gifts.

16 “The priest will give these things to the Lord , and then the priest will make the sin offering and the burnt offering. 17 He will give the basket of bread without yeast to the Lord . Then he will kill the ram as a fellowship offering to the Lord. He will give it to the Lord with the grain offering and the drink offering.

18 “The Nazirites must go to the entrance of the Meeting Tent. There they must shave off their hair that they grew as a dedication to the Lord. That hair will be put in the fire that is burning under the sacrifice of the fellowship offering.

19 “After the Nazirites have cut off their hair, the priest will give them a boiled shoulder from the ram and a large and a small cake from the basket. Both of these cakes are made without yeast. 20 Then the priest will lift these things up to show that they were presented before the Lord . These things are holy and belong to the priest. Also, the ram’s breast and thigh that were lifted up and presented belong to the priest. After that the Nazirites can drink wine.

21 “These are the rules for those who decide to make the Nazirite vow. They must give all these gifts to the Lord . But they might be able to give much more. If they promise to do more, they must keep their promise. But they must give at least all the things listed in these rules for the Nazirite vow.”

The Priests’ Blessings

22 The Lord said to Moses, 23 “Tell Aaron and his sons that when they bless the Israelites, this is what they should say:

24 ‘May the Lord bless you
and keep you.
25 May the Lord smile down on you [ c ]
and show you his kindness.
26 May the Lord answer your prayers [ d ]
and give you peace.’

27 In this way Aaron and his sons will use my name to give a blessing to the Israelites, and I will bless them.”

6 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the Lord :

3 He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried.

4 All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the husk.

5 All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the Lord , he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow.

6 All the days that he separateth himself unto the Lord he shall come at no dead body.

7 He shall not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die: because the consecration of his God is upon his head.

8 All the days of his separation he is holy unto the Lord .

9 And if any man die very suddenly by him, and he hath defiled the head of his consecration; then he shall shave his head in the day of his cleansing, on the seventh day shall he shave it.

10 And on the eighth day he shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons, to the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation:

11 And the priest shall offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, and make an atonement for him, for that he sinned by the dead, and shall hallow his head that same day.

12 And he shall consecrate unto the Lord the days of his separation, and shall bring a lamb of the first year for a trespass offering: but the days that were before shall be lost, because his separation was defiled.

13 And this is the law of the Nazarite, when the days of his separation are fulfilled: he shall be brought unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation:

14 And he shall offer his offering unto the Lord , one he lamb of the first year without blemish for a burnt offering, and one ewe lamb of the first year without blemish for a sin offering, and one ram without blemish for peace offerings,

15 And a basket of unleavened bread, cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, and wafers of unleavened bread anointed with oil, and their meat offering, and their drink offerings.

16 And the priest shall bring them before the Lord , and shall offer his sin offering, and his burnt offering:

17 And he shall offer the ram for a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the Lord , with the basket of unleavened bread: the priest shall offer also his meat offering, and his drink offering.

18 And the Nazarite shall shave the head of his separation at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall take the hair of the head of his separation, and put it in the fire which is under the sacrifice of the peace offerings.

19 And the priest shall take the sodden shoulder of the ram, and one unleavened cake out of the basket, and one unleavened wafer, and shall put them upon the hands of the Nazarite, after the hair of his separation is shaven:

20 And the priest shall wave them for a wave offering before the Lord : this is holy for the priest, with the wave breast and heave shoulder: and after that the Nazarite may drink wine.

21 This is the law of the Nazarite who hath vowed, and of his offering unto the Lord for his separation, beside that that his hand shall get: according to the vow which he vowed, so he must do after the law of his separation.

22 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

23 Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them,

24 The Lord bless thee, and keep thee:

25 The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:

26 The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

27 And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them.

Law of the Nazirites

6 Again the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When a man or woman makes [ a ] a special vow, namely , the vow of ( A ) a [ b ] Nazirite, to live as a Nazirite for the Lord , 3 he shall ( B ) abstain from wine and [ c ] strong drink; he shall [ d ] consume no vinegar, whether made from wine or strong drink, nor shall he drink any grape juice nor eat fresh or dried grapes. 4 All the days of his consecration he shall not eat anything that is produced from the grape vine, from the seeds even to the skin.

5 ‘All the days of his vow of consecration ( C ) no razor shall pass over his head. He shall be holy until the days are fulfilled which he lives as a Nazirite for the Lord ; he shall let the locks of hair on his head grow long.

6 ( D ) All the days of his life as a Nazirite for the Lord he shall not come up to a dead person. 7 He ( E ) shall not make himself unclean for his father or for his mother, for his brother or for his sister, when they die, because his consecration to God is [ e ] on his head. 8 All the days of his consecration he is holy to the Lord .

9 ‘But if someone dies very suddenly beside him and he defiles his consecrated head of hair , then ( F ) he shall shave his head on the day when he becomes clean; ( G ) he shall shave it on the seventh day. 10 Then on the eighth day he shall bring ( H ) two turtledoves or two young doves to the priest, to the entrance of the tent of meeting. 11 And the priest shall offer ( I ) one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering, and make atonement for him [ f ] regarding his sin because of the dead person. And on that same day he shall consecrate his head, 12 and shall live his days of consecration as a Nazirite for the Lord , and shall bring a male lamb a year old as a guilt offering; but the preceding days will [ g ] not count, because his consecration was defiled.

13 ‘Now this is the law of the Nazirite ( J ) when the days of his consecration are fulfilled: he shall bring [ h ] his offering to the entrance of the tent of meeting. 14 And he shall present his offering to the Lord : one male lamb a year old without defect as a burnt offering, one ( K ) ewe lamb a year old without defect as a sin offering, one ram without defect as a peace offering, 15 and a basket of ( L ) unleavened loaves of fine flour mixed with oil and unleavened wafers spread with oil, along with ( M ) their grain offering and their drink offering. 16 Then the priest shall present them before the Lord and offer his sin offering and his burnt offering. 17 He shall also offer the ram as a sacrifice of peace offerings to the Lord , together with the basket of unleavened bread; the priest shall also offer its grain offering and its drink offering. 18 ( N ) The Nazirite shall then shave his consecrated head of hair at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and take the consecrated hair of his head and put it on the fire which is under the sacrifice of peace offerings. 19 ( O ) And the priest shall take the ram’s shoulder when it has been boiled, and one unleavened loaf from the basket and one unleavened wafer, and shall put them on the [ i ] hands of the Nazirite after he has shaved his consecrated hair . 20 Then the priest shall wave them as a wave offering before the Lord . It is holy for the priest, together with the breast offered as a wave offering, and the thigh offered as [ j ] a contribution; and ( P ) afterward the Nazirite may drink wine.’

21 “This is the law of the Nazirite who vows his offering to the Lord according to his consecration, in addition to what else [ k ] he can afford; corresponding to his vow which he makes, so he shall do according to the law of his consecration.”

Aaron’s Benediction

22 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 23 “Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, ‘In this way ( Q ) you shall bless the sons of Israel. You are to say to them:

24 The Lord ( R ) bless you, and [ l ] ( S ) keep you;

25 The Lord ( T ) cause His face to shine on you,
And ( U ) be gracious to you;

26 The Lord ( V ) lift up His face to you,
And ( W ) give you peace.’

27 So they shall [ m ] ( X ) invoke My name on the sons of Israel, and then I will bless them.”

The Nazirite

6 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘If a man or woman wants to make a special vow ( A ) , a vow of dedication ( B ) to the Lord as a Nazirite, ( C ) 3 they must abstain from wine ( D ) and other fermented drink and must not drink vinegar ( E ) made from wine or other fermented drink. They must not drink grape juice or eat grapes ( F ) or raisins. 4 As long as they remain under their Nazirite vow, they must not eat anything that comes from the grapevine, not even the seeds or skins.

5 “‘During the entire period of their Nazirite vow, no razor ( G ) may be used on their head. ( H ) They must be holy until the period of their dedication to the Lord is over; they must let their hair grow long.

6 “‘Throughout the period of their dedication to the Lord , the Nazirite must not go near a dead body. ( I ) 7 Even if their own father or mother or brother or sister dies, they must not make themselves ceremonially unclean ( J ) on account of them, because the symbol of their dedication to God is on their head. 8 Throughout the period of their dedication, they are consecrated to the Lord .

9 “‘If someone dies suddenly in the Nazirite’s presence, thus defiling the hair that symbolizes their dedication, ( K ) they must shave their head on the seventh day—the day of their cleansing. ( L ) 10 Then on the eighth day ( M ) they must bring two doves or two young pigeons ( N ) to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting. ( O ) 11 The priest is to offer one as a sin offering [ a ] ( P ) and the other as a burnt offering ( Q ) to make atonement ( R ) for the Nazirite because they sinned by being in the presence of the dead body. That same day they are to consecrate their head again. 12 They must rededicate themselves to the Lord for the same period of dedication and must bring a year-old male lamb ( S ) as a guilt offering. ( T ) The previous days do not count, because they became defiled during their period of dedication.

13 “‘Now this is the law of the Nazirite when the period of their dedication is over. ( U ) They are to be brought to the entrance to the tent of meeting. ( V ) 14 There they are to present their offerings to the Lord : a year-old male lamb without defect ( W ) for a burnt offering, a year-old ewe lamb without defect for a sin offering, ( X ) a ram ( Y ) without defect for a fellowship offering, ( Z ) 15 together with their grain offerings ( AA ) and drink offerings, ( AB ) and a basket of bread made with the finest flour and without yeast—thick loaves with olive oil mixed in, and thin loaves brushed with olive oil. ( AC )

16 “‘The priest is to present all these ( AD ) before the Lord ( AE ) and make the sin offering and the burnt offering. ( AF ) 17 He is to present the basket of unleavened bread and is to sacrifice the ram as a fellowship offering ( AG ) to the Lord , together with its grain offering ( AH ) and drink offering. ( AI )

18 “‘Then at the entrance to the tent of meeting, the Nazirite must shave off the hair that symbolizes their dedication. ( AJ ) They are to take the hair and put it in the fire that is under the sacrifice of the fellowship offering.

19 “‘After the Nazirite has shaved off the hair that symbolizes their dedication, the priest is to place in their hands a boiled shoulder of the ram, and one thick loaf and one thin loaf from the basket, both made without yeast. ( AK ) 20 The priest shall then wave these before the Lord as a wave offering; ( AL ) they are holy ( AM ) and belong to the priest, together with the breast that was waved and the thigh that was presented. ( AN ) After that, the Nazirite may drink wine. ( AO )

21 “‘This is the law of the Nazirite ( AP ) who vows offerings to the Lord in accordance with their dedication, in addition to whatever else they can afford. They must fulfill the vows ( AQ ) they have made, according to the law of the Nazirite.’”

The Priestly Blessing

22 The Lord said to Moses, 23 “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless ( AR ) the Israelites. Say to them:

24 “‘“The Lord bless you ( AS )
and keep you; ( AT )
25 the Lord make his face shine on you ( AU )
and be gracious to you; ( AV )
26 the Lord turn his face ( AW ) toward you
and give you peace. ( AX ) ”’

27 “So they will put my name ( AY ) on the Israelites, and I will bless them.”
