Numbers 19

Water that makes people clean

19 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 2 ‘This is another rule in the Lord 's law that I am telling to you: Tell the Israelites that they must bring to you a young red cow. It must not have anything wrong with it. And nobody must have put a yoke on it. 3 They must take the cow outside the camp. They must kill it and then give it to Eleazar the priest. 4 Eleazar must take some of the blood from the cow. He must splash it seven times in front of the Tent of Meeting. 5 Then they must burn the whole cow while Eleazar is watching. They must burn its body with the skin, meat, blood and everything that is inside its body. 6 The priest must take some wood, some plants and some red wool. He must throw them on the fire. 7 Then he must wash his clothes and he must wash his body with water. After that, he can come into the camp, but he will not be clean until the evening. 8 And the man who burns the animal must also wash his clothes in water. And he must wash his body in water. He will not be clean until the evening.

9 Then a man who is clean must pick up all the ashes of the cow. And he must put them outside the camp in a clean place. Keep them safe there for all the Israelites. You must mix them with water to make special water. It will be water for someone who is not clean to make them holy again. It is water to remove sin. 10 The man who picks up the ashes must also wash his clothes. He will not be clean until evening. This rule is for the Israelites and for all the people who are living with them.

11 Any person who touches a dead body will not be clean for seven days. 12 He must use the water to wash himself on the third day and on the seventh day. Then he will be clean. If he does not wash himself on the third day and on the seventh day, he will not be clean. 13 A person might touch the body of a dead person. If he does not make himself clean, he has made the Lord 's Tent of Meeting unclean. You must make that person separate from the Israelites. Because they did not splash the special water on him, he will not be clean. He will continue to be unclean.

14 This is the rule when a person dies in a tent. Any person who is in the tent will not be clean for seven days. 15 Any pot in the tent that does not have a lid will not be clean.

16 Also, a person might have killed someone with a sword out in the country. Or someone may have died because he was old or ill. Anyone who touches a dead body in the country will become unclean for seven days. Also if they touch a human bone, or a grave, that person will be unclean for seven days.

17 Then for the person who is not clean, you must take some of the ashes of the young red cow. That is the cow to make people clean. You must put these ashes into a pot and you must mix them with water from a river. 18 Then a person who is clean must take hyssop. He must put it into the water. Then he must use it to splash the water on the tent and on everything that is in it. He must also splash the water on all the people who have been there. And he must splash it on the person who touched the bone or the dead body or the grave. 19 And the clean person must splash the water on the unclean person on the third day too. And he must do it on the seventh day. On the seventh day he will make the person clean again. Then the person who had not been clean must wash his clothes. And he must wash himself in water. In the evening, that person will become clean. 20 The person who is not clean might not wash himself and his clothes. If he does not do it, you must make that person separate from the people. That is because he has made the Lord 's Holy Place become unclean. Because the priest did not splash special water on him he will not be clean. 21 This rule is for now and for ever. The man who splashes the special water must also wash his clothes. Any person who touches the special water will not be clean until evening. 22 If an unclean person touches anything, that thing also becomes unclean. If anyone touches the unclean person, he also becomes unclean until evening.’

The Ashes of the Red Cow

19 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said, 2 “These are the laws from the teachings that the Lord gave to the Israelites. Get a red cow that has nothing wrong with it. That cow must not have any bruises. And it must never have worn a yoke. 3 Give that cow to Eleazar, and he will take it outside the camp and kill it there. 4 Then Eleazar the priest must put some of its blood on his finger and sprinkle some of the blood toward the Holy Tent. He must do this seven times. 5 Then the whole cow must be burned in front of him; the skin, the meat, the blood, and the intestines must all be burned. 6 Then the priest must take a cedar stick, a hyssop branch, and some red string. He must throw these things into the fire where the cow is burning. 7 Then the priest must wash himself and his clothes with water. Then he must come back into the camp. He will be unclean until evening. 8 The man who burns that cow must wash himself and his clothes in water. He will be unclean until evening.

9 “Then someone who is clean will collect the ashes from the cow and put them in a clean place outside the camp. These ashes will be used when someone must keep a special ceremony to become clean. These ashes will also be used to remove a person’s sins.

10 “The man who collected the cow’s ashes must wash his clothes. He will be unclean until evening.

“This rule will continue forever. This rule is for the citizens of Israel and for the foreigners living with you. 11 Those who touch a dead body will be unclean for seven days. 12 They must wash themselves with the special water on the third day and again on the seventh day. If they don’t do this, they will remain unclean. 13 Those who touch the body of someone who has died are unclean. If they stay unclean and then go to the Lord ’s Holy Tent, they make it unclean. So they must be separated from the Israelites. Because the special water was not thrown on them, they remain unclean.

14 “This is the rule about those who die in their tents: If someone dies in the tent, everyone in the tent will be unclean for seven days. 15 And every jar or pot without a lid becomes unclean. 16 If there is a dead body out in a field, whether the person died in battle or for some other reason, whoever touches that dead body, or its bones, or even its grave will be unclean for seven days.

17 “If you have become unclean, someone must use the ashes from the burned cow to make you clean again. They must pour fresh water [ a ] over the ashes into a jar. 18 That clean person must take a hyssop branch and dip it into the water. The clean person must sprinkle it over the tent, the dishes, and any people who were in the tent. That clean person must do this for anyone who touches a dead body, its bones, or even a grave.

19 “Then that clean person must sprinkle this water on you on the third day and again on the seventh day. On the seventh day you will become clean. You must wash your clothes in water and you will become clean in the evening.

20 “Whoever becomes unclean and does not become clean must be separated from the community. If an unclean person is not sprinkled with that special water and does not become clean, that person might make the Lord ’s Holy Tent unclean. 21 This rule will be for you forever. And whoever sprinkled the special water must wash their clothes because they will be unclean until evening. 22 And whoever an unclean person touches will be unclean until evening.”

Footnotes

  1. Numbers 19:17 fresh water Literally, “living water.” This means fresh, flowing water.

19 And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

2 This is the ordinance of the law which the Lord hath commanded, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring thee a red heifer without spot, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came yoke:

3 And ye shall give her unto Eleazar the priest, that he may bring her forth without the camp, and one shall slay her before his face:

4 And Eleazar the priest shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle of her blood directly before the tabernacle of the congregation seven times:

5 And one shall burn the heifer in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, with her dung, shall he burn:

6 And the priest shall take cedar wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer.

7 Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp, and the priest shall be unclean until the even.

8 And he that burneth her shall wash his clothes in water, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the even.

9 And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water of separation: it is a purification for sin.

10 And he that gathereth the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: and it shall be unto the children of Israel, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among them, for a statute for ever.

11 He that toucheth the dead body of any man shall be unclean seven days.

12 He shall purify himself with it on the third day, and on the seventh day he shall be clean: but if he purify not himself the third day, then the seventh day he shall not be clean.

13 Whosoever toucheth the dead body of any man that is dead, and purifieth not himself, defileth the tabernacle of the Lord ; and that soul shall be cut off from Israel: because the water of separation was not sprinkled upon him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him.

14 This is the law, when a man dieth in a tent: all that come into the tent, and all that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days.

15 And every open vessel, which hath no covering bound upon it, is unclean.

16 And whosoever toucheth one that is slain with a sword in the open fields, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.

17 And for an unclean person they shall take of the ashes of the burnt heifer of purification for sin, and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel:

18 And a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it upon the tent, and upon all the vessels, and upon the persons that were there, and upon him that touched a bone, or one slain, or one dead, or a grave:

19 And the clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day: and on the seventh day he shall purify himself, and wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at even.

20 But the man that shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from among the congregation, because he hath defiled the sanctuary of the Lord : the water of separation hath not been sprinkled upon him; he is unclean.

21 And it shall be a perpetual statute unto them, that he that sprinkleth the water of separation shall wash his clothes; and he that toucheth the water of separation shall be unclean until even.

22 And whatsoever the unclean person toucheth shall be unclean; and the soul that toucheth it shall be unclean until even.

Ordinance of the Red Heifer

19 Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 2 “This is the statute of the law which the Lord has commanded, saying, ‘Speak to the sons of Israel that they bring you an ( A ) unblemished red heifer in which there is no defect and ( B ) on which a yoke has never [ a ] been mounted. 3 And you shall give it to ( C ) Eleazar the priest, and it shall ( D ) be brought outside the camp and be slaughtered in his presence. 4 And Eleazar the priest shall take some of its blood with his finger and ( E ) sprinkle some of its blood toward the front of the tent of meeting seven times. 5 Then the heifer shall be burned in his sight; ( F ) its hide, its flesh, and its blood, with its refuse, shall be burned. 6 And the priest shall take ( G ) cedar wood, hyssop, and scarlet material , and throw it into the midst of the [ b ] burning heifer. 7 The priest ( H ) shall then wash his clothes and bathe his [ c ] body in water, and afterward come into the camp; but the priest will be [ d ] unclean until evening. 8 The one who burns [ e ] the heifer shall also wash his clothes in water and bathe his [ f ] body in water, and will be unclean until evening. 9 Now a man who is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer and put them outside the camp in a clean place, and [ g ] the congregation of the sons of Israel shall keep them for ( I ) water to remove impurity; it is [ h ] purification from sin. 10 And the one who gathers the ashes of the heifer ( J ) shall wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening; and it shall be a permanent statute for the sons of Israel and for the stranger who resides among them.

11 ( K ) The one who touches the dead body of any [ i ] person will also be unclean for seven days. 12 That one shall ( L ) purify himself with [ j ] the water on the third day and on the seventh day, and then he will be clean; but if he does not purify himself on the third day and on the seventh day, he will not be clean. 13 ( M ) Anyone who touches a dead body, the [ k ] body of a person who has died, and does not purify himself, ( N ) defiles the [ l ] tabernacle of the Lord ; and that person shall be cut off from Israel. Since the water for impurity was not ( O ) sprinkled on him, he will be unclean; his uncleanness is still on him.

14 ‘This is the law when a person dies in a tent: everyone who comes into the tent and everyone who is in the tent will be unclean for seven days. 15 And every open container, which has no cover tied down on it, will be unclean. 16 ( P ) Also, anyone who in the open field touches one who has been killed with a sword or one who has died naturally , or touches a human bone or a grave, will be unclean for seven days. 17 Then for the unclean person they shall take some of the [ m ] ashes of the [ n ] burnt [ o ] ( Q ) purification from sin and [ p ] running water shall be [ q ] added to them in a container. 18 And a clean person shall take hyssop and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it on the tent, on all the furnishings, on the persons who were there, and on the one who touched the bone or the one who was killed or the one who died naturally , or the grave. 19 Then the clean person ( R ) shall sprinkle on the unclean on the third day and on the seventh day; and on the seventh day he shall purify him, and he shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and will be clean by evening.

20 ‘But the person who is unclean and does not purify himself, that person shall be cut off from the midst of the assembly, because he has ( S ) defiled the sanctuary of the Lord ; the water for impurity has not been sprinkled on him, so he is unclean. 21 So it shall be a permanent statute for them. And the one ( T ) who sprinkles the water for impurity shall wash his clothes, and the one who touches the water for impurity will be unclean until evening. 22 ( U ) Furthermore, anything that the unclean person touches will be unclean; and the person who touches it will be unclean until evening.’”

The Water of Cleansing

19 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: 2 “This is a requirement of the law that the Lord has commanded: Tell the Israelites to bring you a red heifer ( A ) without defect or blemish ( B ) and that has never been under a yoke. ( C ) 3 Give it to Eleazar ( D ) the priest; it is to be taken outside the camp ( E ) and slaughtered in his presence. 4 Then Eleazar the priest is to take some of its blood on his finger and sprinkle ( F ) it seven times toward the front of the tent of meeting. 5 While he watches, the heifer is to be burned—its hide, flesh, blood and intestines. ( G ) 6 The priest is to take some cedar wood, hyssop ( H ) and scarlet wool ( I ) and throw them onto the burning heifer. 7 After that, the priest must wash his clothes and bathe himself with water. ( J ) He may then come into the camp, but he will be ceremonially unclean till evening. 8 The man who burns it must also wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he too will be unclean till evening.

9 “A man who is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer ( K ) and put them in a ceremonially clean place ( L ) outside the camp. They are to be kept by the Israelite community for use in the water of cleansing; ( M ) it is for purification from sin. ( N ) 10 The man who gathers up ( O ) the ashes of the heifer must also wash his clothes, and he too will be unclean till evening. ( P ) This will be a lasting ordinance ( Q ) both for the Israelites and for the foreigners residing among them. ( R )

11 “Whoever touches a human corpse ( S ) will be unclean for seven days. ( T ) 12 They must purify themselves with the water on the third day and on the seventh day; ( U ) then they will be clean. But if they do not purify themselves on the third and seventh days, they will not be clean. ( V ) 13 If they fail to purify themselves after touching a human corpse, ( W ) they defile the Lord ’s tabernacle. ( X ) They must be cut off from Israel. ( Y ) Because the water of cleansing has not been sprinkled on them, they are unclean; ( Z ) their uncleanness remains on them.

14 “This is the law that applies when a person dies in a tent: Anyone who enters the tent and anyone who is in it will be unclean for seven days, 15 and every open container ( AA ) without a lid fastened on it will be unclean.

16 “Anyone out in the open who touches someone who has been killed with a sword or someone who has died a natural death, ( AB ) or anyone who touches a human bone ( AC ) or a grave, ( AD ) will be unclean for seven days. ( AE )

17 “For the unclean person, put some ashes ( AF ) from the burned purification offering into a jar and pour fresh water ( AG ) over them. 18 Then a man who is ceremonially clean is to take some hyssop, ( AH ) dip it in the water and sprinkle ( AI ) the tent and all the furnishings and the people who were there. He must also sprinkle anyone who has touched a human bone or a grave ( AJ ) or anyone who has been killed or anyone who has died a natural death. 19 The man who is clean is to sprinkle ( AK ) those who are unclean on the third and seventh days, and on the seventh day he is to purify them. ( AL ) Those who are being cleansed must wash their clothes ( AM ) and bathe with water, and that evening they will be clean. 20 But if those who are unclean do not purify themselves, they must be cut off from the community, because they have defiled ( AN ) the sanctuary of the Lord . ( AO ) The water of cleansing has not been sprinkled on them, and they are unclean. ( AP ) 21 This is a lasting ordinance ( AQ ) for them.

“The man who sprinkles the water of cleansing must also wash his clothes, and anyone who touches the water of cleansing will be unclean till evening. 22 Anything that an unclean ( AR ) person touches becomes unclean, and anyone who touches it becomes unclean till evening.”
