Numbers 13

Moses sends men to explore Canaan

13 Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 ‘I will give the land of Canaan to the Israelites. Now you must send men to explore that land. Choose one man from each tribe of your ancestors. Each man must be a leader among his tribe.’

3 So Moses obeyed the Lord 's command. He sent the men from the Paran desert into Canaan. Each man was a leader among the Israelites. 4 This is a list of their names:

From Reuben's tribe: Shammua, the son of Zaccur.

5 From Simeon's tribe: Shaphat, the son of Hori.

6 From Judah's tribe: Caleb, the son of Jephunneh.

7 From Issachar's tribe: Igal, the son of Joseph.

8 From Ephraim's tribe: Hoshea, the son of Nun.

9 From Benjamin's tribe: Palti, the son of Raphu.

10 From Zebulun's tribe: Gaddiel, the son of Sodi.

11 From Manasseh's tribe: Gaddi, the son of Susi.

12 From Dan's tribe: Ammiel, the son of Gemalli.

13 From Asher's tribe: Sethur, the son of Michael.

14 From Naphtali's tribe: Nahbi, the son of Vophsi.

15 From Gad's tribe: Geuel, the son of Maki.

16 Those are the names of the men that Moses sent to explore the land. Moses changed the name of Hoshea, the son of Nun, to Joshua. [ a ]

17 Moses sent them to explore the land of Canaan. He said to them, ‘Go north from here, through the Negev desert. Then continue to go north, into the place where there are hills. 18 Look at the land to see what it is like. See whether the people who live there are strong or weak. See whether few people or many people live there. 19 See whether their land is good or bad. Look at the towns where the people live. See if they have strong walls or they are in the open. 20 See whether the land is able to make good food grow there, or not. See whether there are forests that grow there. Then try to get some fruit from the land and bring it back here.’ (It was the time of year for the first grapes to be ready to eat.)

21 So the men went and they explored the land of Canaan. They started in the desert called Zin, and they continued to Rehob, near Lebo-Hamath. 22 When they had gone up through the Negev desert in the south of the land, they arrived at Hebron. That was where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, were living. They had built Hebron seven years before the Egyptians built Zoan.

23 Then the men came to the valley called Eshcol. They cut a branch which had one group of grapes on it. It was so large that two men carried it between them on a pole. They also brought some other fruits called pomegranates and figs. 24 They called that valley ‘Eshcol’ because of the large group of grapes that the Israelites cut down there.

25 The men returned after they had explored the land for 40 days.

The men bring news to Moses

26 The men came back to Kadesh in the Paran desert. They brought their message to Moses and Aaron and to all the Israelites there. They told them all about the land of Canaan and they showed its fruit to them. 27 They said to Moses, ‘We went to look at the land where you sent us. It is certainly a land where there is plenty of food and drink, enough for everyone. This is some of its fruit. 28 But the people who live in the land are strong. Their towns are very big, and strong walls keep them safe. Also, we saw some descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites are living in Negev, the land in the south of the country. The Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hills. And the Canaanites live by the sea and by the edge of Jordan River.’

30 Then Caleb stood in front of Moses and he told the Israelites to be quiet. He said, ‘We should go into the land and get power over it. We will certainly be able to do it!’

31 But the men who had gone into Canaan with him said, ‘These people are stronger than we are. So we cannot go and fight against them.’ 32 Those men gave to the Israelites a bad report about the land that they had explored. They said, ‘We went through that whole land and we explored it. The land seems to eat the people who live there! All the people that we saw there were very big and strong. 33 We also saw descendants of the Nephilites there. And we felt like very small insects when we looked at them. And we seemed like very small insects to them too.’ (The descendants of Anak are also descendants of the Nephilites.) [ b ]

The Spies Go to Canaan

13 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Send some men to explore the land of Canaan. I will give this land to the Israelites. Send one leader from each of the twelve tribes.”

3 So Moses obeyed the Lord ’s command and sent out the Israelite leaders while the people were camped in the desert of Paran. 4 These are their names:

from the tribe of Reuben—Shammua son of Zaccur;

5 from the tribe of Simeon—Shaphat son of Hori;

6 from the tribe of Judah—Caleb son of Jephunneh;

7 from the tribe of Issachar—Igal son of Joseph;

8 from the tribe of Ephraim—Hoshea [ a ] son of Nun;

9 from the tribe of Benjamin—Palti son of Raphu;

10 from the tribe of Zebulun—Gaddiel son of Sodi;

11 from the tribe of Manasseh (a tribe from Joseph)—Gaddi son of Susi;

12 from the tribe of Dan—Ammiel son of Gemalli;

13 from the tribe of Asher—Sethur son of Michael;

14 from the tribe of Naphtali—Nahbi son of Vophsi;

15 from the tribe of Gad—Geuel son of Maki.

16 These are the names of the men Moses sent to look at and study the land. (Moses called Hoshea son of Nun by another name. Moses called him Joshua.)

17 When Moses was sending them out to explore Canaan, he said, “Go through the Negev and then into the hill country. 18 See what the land looks like. Learn about the people who live there. Are they strong or are they weak? Are they few or are they many? 19 Learn about the land that they live in. Is it good land or bad land? What kind of towns do they live in? Do the towns have walls protecting them? Are the towns strongly defended? 20 And learn other things about the land. Is the soil good for growing things, or is it poor soil? Are there trees on the land? Try to bring back some of the fruit from that land.” (This was during the time when the first grapes should be ripe.)

21 So they went to explore the country. They explored the area from the desert of Zin to Rehob and Lebo Hamath. 22 They entered the country through the Negev and went to Hebron. (The town of Hebron was built seven years before the town of Zoan in Egypt.) Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai lived there. These men were descendants of Anak. 23 Then the men went to Eshcol Valley. There they cut off a branch from a grapevine that had a bunch of grapes on it. They put that branch on a pole, and two men carried it between them. They also carried some pomegranates and figs. 24 That place is called the Eshcol [ b ] Valley, because there the men of Israel cut off the bunch of grapes.

25 The men explored that country for 40 days, and then they went back to the camp. 26 The Israelites were camped near Kadesh, in the desert of Paran. The men went to Moses and Aaron and all the Israelites. They told Moses, Aaron, and all the people what they saw and showed them the fruit from the land. 27 The men told Moses, “We went to the land where you sent us. It is a land filled with many good things [ c ] ! Here is some of the fruit that grows there. 28 But the people living there are very powerful. The cities are very large and strongly defended. We even saw some Anakites there. 29 The Amalekites live in the Negev. The Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country. The Canaanites live near the sea and by the Jordan River.”

30 Caleb told the people near Moses to be quiet. Then Caleb said, “We should go up and take that land for ourselves. We can easily take that land.”

31 But the men who had gone with him said, “We cannot fight those people! They are much stronger than we are.” 32 So those men gave a report that discouraged the people. They said, “The land we saw is full of strong people. They are strong enough to easily defeat anyone who goes there. 33 We saw the giant Nephilim people there! (The descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim.) We felt like little grasshoppers. Yes, we were like grasshoppers to them!”

Footnotes

  1. Numbers 13:8 Hoshea Or “Joshua.”
  2. Numbers 13:24 Eshcol This name is like the Hebrew word meaning “a bunch of grapes.”
  3. Numbers 13:27 land … things Literally, “land flowing with milk and honey.” Also in 14:8.

13 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them.

3 And Moses by the commandment of the Lord sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were heads of the children of Israel.

4 And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.

5 Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.

6 Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

7 Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.

8 Of the tribe of Ephraim, Oshea the son of Nun.

9 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.

10 Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.

11 Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.

12 Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.

13 Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.

14 Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.

15 Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

16 These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua.

17 And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain:

18 And see the land, what it is, and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they be strong or weak, few or many;

19 And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad; and what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds;

20 And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes.

21 So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath.

22 And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

23 And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.

24 The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.

25 And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.

26 And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land.

27 And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

28 Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.

30 And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.

31 But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.

32 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.

33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

Spies View the Land

13 Then ( A ) the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 ( B ) Send out men for yourself to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am going to give the sons of Israel; you shall send a man from each of their fathers’ tribes, every one a leader among them.” 3 So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran at the [ a ] command of the Lord , all of them men who were heads of the sons of Israel. 4 These then were their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur; 5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori; 6 from the tribe of Judah, ( C ) Caleb the son of Jephunneh; 7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph; 8 from the tribe of Ephraim, ( D ) Hoshea the son of Nun; 9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu; 10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi; 11 from the tribe of Joseph, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi; 12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli; 13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael; 14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi; 15 and from the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi. 16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land; but Moses called ( E ) Hoshea the son of Nun, [ b ] Joshua.

17 When Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, he said to them, “Go up there into ( F ) the [ c ] Negev; then go up into the hill country. 18 See what the land is like , and whether the people who live in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many. 19 And how is the land in which they live, is it good or bad? And how are the cities in which they live, are the people in open camps or in fortifications? 20 And ( G ) how is the land, is it [ d ] productive or unproductive? Are there trees in it or not? And ( H ) show yourselves courageous and get some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes.

21 So they went up and spied out the land from ( I ) the wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, [ e ] ( J ) at Lebo-hamath. 22 When they had gone up into ( K ) the Negev, [ f ] they came to Hebron where ( L ) Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the [ g ] descendants of ( M ) Anak were. (Hebron was built seven years before ( N ) Zoan in Egypt.)

23 Then they came to the [ h ] Valley of [ i ] ( O ) Eshcol, and from there they cut off a branch with a single cluster of grapes; and they carried it on a pole between two men , with some of the pomegranates and the figs. 24 That place was called the Valley of [ j ] Eshcol, because of the cluster which the sons of Israel cut off from there.

The Spies’ Reports

25 When they returned from spying out the land, at the end of forty days, 26 they went on and came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, [ k ] in the wilderness of Paran at ( P ) Kadesh; and they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 So they reported to him and said, “We came into the land where you sent us, and ( Q ) it certainly does flow with milk and honey, and ( R ) this is its fruit. 28 Nevertheless, ( S ) the people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And indeed, we saw ( T ) the [ l ] descendants of Anak there! 29 Amalek is living in the land of ( U ) the Negev, the Hittites, the Jebusites, and ( V ) the Amorites are living in the hill country, and ( W ) the Canaanites are living by the sea and by the side of the Jordan.”

30 Then Caleb quieted the people [ m ] before Moses and said, “We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we will certainly prevail over it.” 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “ ( X ) We are not able to go up against the people, because they are too strong for us.” 32 So they brought ( Y ) a bad report of the land which they had spied out to the sons of Israel, saying, “The land through which we have gone to spy out is ( Z ) a land that devours its inhabitants; and ( AA ) all the people whom we saw in it are people of great stature. 33 We also saw the [ n ] ( AB ) Nephilim there (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and ( AC ) we were like [ o ] grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”

Exploring Canaan

13 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Send some men to explore ( A ) the land of Canaan, ( B ) which I am giving to the Israelites. ( C ) From each ancestral tribe ( D ) send one of its leaders.”

3 So at the Lord ’s command Moses sent them out from the Desert of Paran. All of them were leaders of the Israelites. ( E ) 4 These are their names:

from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zakkur;

5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;

6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh; ( F )

7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;

8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun; ( G )

9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;

10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;

11 from the tribe of Manasseh (a tribe of Joseph), Gaddi son of Susi;

12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli;

13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael;

14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;

15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Maki.

16 These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore ( H ) the land. (Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun ( I ) the name Joshua.) ( J )

17 When Moses sent them to explore Canaan, ( K ) he said, “Go up through the Negev ( L ) and on into the hill country. ( M ) 18 See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many. 19 What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Are they unwalled or fortified? 20 How is the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees in it or not? Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land. ( N ) ” (It was the season for the first ripe grapes.) ( O )

21 So they went up and explored the land from the Desert of Zin ( P ) as far as Rehob, ( Q ) toward Lebo Hamath. ( R ) 22 They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron, ( S ) where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, ( T ) the descendants of Anak, ( U ) lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) ( V ) 23 When they reached the Valley of Eshkol, [ a ] ( W ) they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates ( X ) and figs. ( Y ) 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshkol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there. 25 At the end of forty days ( Z ) they returned from exploring the land. ( AA )

Report on the Exploration

26 They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh ( AB ) in the Desert of Paran. ( AC ) There they reported to them ( AD ) and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land. ( AE ) 27 They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! ( AF ) Here is its fruit. ( AG ) 28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. ( AH ) We even saw descendants of Anak ( AI ) there. ( AJ ) 29 The Amalekites ( AK ) live in the Negev; the Hittites, ( AL ) Jebusites ( AM ) and Amorites ( AN ) live in the hill country; ( AO ) and the Canaanites ( AP ) live near the sea and along the Jordan. ( AQ )

30 Then Caleb ( AR ) silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”

31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” ( AS ) 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report ( AT ) about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours ( AU ) those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. ( AV ) 33 We saw the Nephilim ( AW ) there (the descendants of Anak ( AX ) come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers ( AY ) in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”
