Leviticus 7

7 These are the rules for a most holy offering. A person may be sorry for the wrong things that he has done. That person must obey these rules. 2 The priest must kill an animal at the north side of the altar. He must throw the blood onto the sides of the altar. 3 The priest will bring all the fat from the tail and the inside parts to the altar. 4 He will bring the kidneys and the best piece of the liver. 5 Then he will burn the pieces on the altar. They are a gift to the Lord to make a person clean from sin. 6 Aaron's sons can eat the meat that is not burnt. They must eat it in a holy place because it is most holy.

7 The rules are the same for sacrifices for sin and for a person who is sorry for his sins. The gifts of meat are for the priest who brings them to the altar. 8 The skin of the animal is for the priest. 9 People may give gifts of grain that they cooked in an oven or on a flat plate. They should give them all to the priest. 10 Grain that is dry is also a gift. And grain that a man mixes with oil is also a gift. They should give them to Aaron's sons.

The Friendship offering

11 These rules are for friendship offerings to the Lord . 12 If a man wants to thank God, he must give an animal and flat loaves of bread. He must mix the flour for the bread with oil. He must not mix the flour with yeast. 13 He must also give other loaves of bread to God. He must make these with flour, oil and yeast. 14 A man must offer one of each kind of loaf to the Lord . These belong to the priest who throws the blood on the altar. 15 The person must not keep the meat from the animal until the next day. He must eat it on the day that he offers it.

16 The gift to God may be for a promise. The gift may be because the person loves God. That person will not have to eat it all on the same day. He can eat some of it on the next day. 17 On the third day, there may still be some meat that he has not eaten. If there is, he must burn it. 18 If the person eats the meat on the third day, God will not accept the gift. The meat is not good. The person who eats it will not give God pleasure.

19 Some meat may touch something that is not clean. Nobody should eat that meat. People must burn it. Only a clean person can eat the meat that is a gift to God. 20 A person who is not clean might eat the friendship offering to the Lord . If he does, they must send him away from Israel's people. 21 A person might touch something that is not clean. He must not eat the meat of the offering to the Lord . That person must not eat it if he has touched an unclean animal or an unclean person. If he does eat it, they must send him away. They must send him away from Israel's people.’

Israel's people must not eat blood or fat

22 The Lord said to Moses, 23 ‘Tell Israel's people this. They must not eat the fat from sheep, cows or goats. 24 A person can use the fat of a dead animal that he has found, but he must not eat it. 25 They must not eat the fat of an animal that they have burnt as a gift on the Lord 's altar. They must send away from God's people anyone who does eat it. 26 You must not eat the blood of an animal or of a bird even if you are living in another country. 27 You must send away from Israel's people any person who eats blood.’

Moses tells the priests which parts of the animal they can eat

28 The Lord said to Moses, 29 ‘Say to Israel's people, “When a person gives an animal as a friendship offering, he must bring part of it to the Lord . 30 He must carry the offering in his own hands to the fire. He must bring the fat and the meat of the ribs and he must lift the meat to the Lord . 31 The priest will burn the fat at the altar. He will lift the meat of the ribs to God. Then Aaron's sons can eat it. 32 The top part of the back right leg of the animal is a gift. 33 It is for the priest who offers the blood and the fat. 34 The ribs and the top part of the right leg are gifts. They are from the friendship offering. God wants Aaron and his sons to have them. People must give these parts of their gift to the priests. 35 The Lord gave this part of the Israelites' offerings to Aaron's sons. He gave it to them on the day when they became the Lord 's priests. 36 The Lord told the Israelites that they must do this. He told them that on the day that Aaron's sons became priests. All their sons and grandsons must always give these offerings to the priests.” ’

37 These are all the rules that a person must use. They are for when he gives a gift to God. They are the rules for offerings of grain and the friendship offering. And they are rules for the offerings that people give to take away their sin. The rules tell them how to make Aaron's sons priests. And they tell people who have done bad things what to do. They must show God that they are sorry. 38 Israel's people were in the Sinai desert. The Lord gave the rules to Moses on Sinai mountain. That was on the day that the Lord spoke to the people. He told them that they should bring their offerings to him there.

Guilt Offerings

7 “These are the rules for the guilt offering, which is very holy: 2 A priest must kill the guilt offering in the same place where they kill the burnt offerings. Then he must sprinkle the blood from the guilt offering around the altar.

3 “The priest must offer all the fat from the guilt offering. He must offer the fat tail and the fat that covers the inner parts. 4 He must offer the two kidneys and the fat covering them at the lower back muscle. He must also offer the fat part of the liver. He must remove it with the kidneys. 5 He must bring these things to the altar as a gift to the Lord . It is a guilt offering.

6 “Any male in a priest’s family may eat the guilt offering. It is very holy, so it must be eaten in a holy place. 7 The guilt offering is like the sin offering. The same rules are for both offerings. The priest who does the sacrificing will get the meat for food. 8 He will also get the skin [ a ] from the burnt offering. 9 Every grain offering belongs to the priest who offers it. That priest will get the grain offerings that were baked in an oven, or cooked on a frying pan, or in a baking dish. 10 The grain offerings will belong to Aaron’s sons. It doesn’t make any difference if the grain offerings are dry or mixed with oil. The sons of Aaron will all share this food.

Fellowship Offerings

11 “This is the law of the sacrifice of fellowship offerings that you bring to the Lord : 12 People can bring fellowship offerings to show their thanks to God. If you bring your sacrifice to give thanks, you should also bring unleavened bread mixed with oil, wafers with oil poured over them, and loaves of fine flour mixed with oil. 13 You must also bring loaves of bread made with yeast to go with your fellowship offering. 14 Offer one each of these different kinds of bread as a gift to the Lord . Then it will belong to the priest who sprinkles the blood of the fellowship offerings. 15 The meat of the fellowship offering must be eaten on the same day it is offered as a way of showing thanks to God. None of the meat should remain until the next morning.

16 “If you bring a fellowship offering simply because you want to give a gift to God or because it is part of a special promise you made to him, the sacrifice should be eaten the same day you offer it. But if there is any left, it must be eaten the next day. 17 If any meat from this sacrifice is still left over on the third day, it must be burned in the fire. 18 If anyone eats the meat from the fellowship offering on the third day, the Lord will not accept it as a sacrifice. It will have no value for that person, and to the Lord it will be like rotten meat! Whoever eats it will be responsible for their sin.

19 “People must not eat any of the meat that touches anything unclean. They must burn this meat in the fire. Whoever is clean may eat the meat from the fellowship offering. 20 But anyone who is unclean and eats the meat from the fellowship offerings that was offered to the Lord must be separated from their people.

21 “If you touch something that is unclean, it doesn’t matter if it was made unclean by a person, an animal, or some disgusting thing, you will become unclean. And if you eat any of the meat from the fellowship offerings that was given to the Lord , you must be separated from your people.”

22 The Lord said to Moses, 23 “Tell the Israelites: You must not eat any fat from your cattle, sheep, or goats. 24 You may use the fat from any animal that has died by itself or was torn by other animals, but you must never eat it. 25 Whoever eats the fat from an animal that was offered as a gift to the Lord must be separated from their people.

26 “No matter where you live, you must never eat blood from any bird or any animal. 27 Anyone who eats blood must be separated from their people.”

Rules for the Offerings Presented to God

28 The Lord said to Moses, 29 “Tell the Israelites: If you bring a fellowship offering to the Lord , you must present that gift to the Lord yourself. 30 You must bring the fat and the breast of the animal to the priest. Then he will lift up the breast in front of the Lord to show it was presented to God. 31 The priest will burn the fat on the altar, but the breast of the animal will belong to Aaron and his sons. 32 You must also give the right thigh from the fellowship offering as a gift to the priest. 33 That part of the fellowship offering will belong to the priest [ b ] who carries the blood and fat to the altar. 34 I will accept the breast that was lifted up and the gift of the right thigh from the Israelites. Then I will give these things to Aaron and his sons. This is their share from the fellowship offerings of the Israelites forever.”

35 Those parts from the gifts offered to the Lord were given to Aaron and his sons. Whenever Aaron and his sons serve as the Lord ’s priests, they get that share of the sacrifices. 36 The Lord commanded the Israelites to give those parts to the priests once they have been anointed. That will be their share from the Israelites forever.

37 These are the laws about burnt offerings, grain offerings, sin offerings, guilt offerings, fellowship offerings, and offerings for when the priests are appointed. 38 The Lord gave these laws to Moses on Mount Sinai when he commanded the Israelites to bring their offerings to the Lord in the desert of Sinai.

Footnotes

  1. Leviticus 7:8 skin This was used for making leather.
  2. Leviticus 7:33 the priest Literally, “him of the sons of Aaron.”

7 Likewise this is the law of the trespass offering: it is most holy.

2 In the place where they kill the burnt offering shall they kill the trespass offering: and the blood thereof shall he sprinkle round about upon the altar.

3 And he shall offer of it all the fat thereof; the rump, and the fat that covereth the inwards,

4 And the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the flanks, and the caul that is above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away:

5 And the priest shall burn them upon the altar for an offering made by fire unto the Lord : it is a trespass offering.

6 Every male among the priests shall eat thereof: it shall be eaten in the holy place: it is most holy.

7 As the sin offering is, so is the trespass offering: there is one law for them: the priest that maketh atonement therewith shall have it.

8 And the priest that offereth any man's burnt offering, even the priest shall have to himself the skin of the burnt offering which he hath offered.

9 And all the meat offering that is baken in the oven, and all that is dressed in the fryingpan, and in the pan, shall be the priest's that offereth it.

10 And every meat offering, mingled with oil, and dry, shall all the sons of Aaron have, one as much as another.

11 And this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which he shall offer unto the Lord .

12 If he offer it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and cakes mingled with oil, of fine flour, fried.

13 Besides the cakes, he shall offer for his offering leavened bread with the sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace offerings.

14 And of it he shall offer one out of the whole oblation for an heave offering unto the Lord , and it shall be the priest's that sprinkleth the blood of the peace offerings.

15 And the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving shall be eaten the same day that it is offered; he shall not leave any of it until the morning.

16 But if the sacrifice of his offering be a vow, or a voluntary offering, it shall be eaten the same day that he offereth his sacrifice: and on the morrow also the remainder of it shall be eaten:

17 But the remainder of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day shall be burnt with fire.

18 And if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings be eaten at all on the third day, it shall not be accepted, neither shall it be imputed unto him that offereth it: it shall be an abomination, and the soul that eateth of it shall bear his iniquity.

19 And the flesh that toucheth any unclean thing shall not be eaten; it shall be burnt with fire: and as for the flesh, all that be clean shall eat thereof.

20 But the soul that eateth of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, that pertain unto the Lord , having his uncleanness upon him, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.

21 Moreover the soul that shall touch any unclean thing, as the uncleanness of man, or any unclean beast, or any abominable unclean thing, and eat of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which pertain unto the Lord , even that soul shall be cut off from his people.

22 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

23 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Ye shall eat no manner of fat, of ox, or of sheep, or of goat.

24 And the fat of the beast that dieth of itself, and the fat of that which is torn with beasts, may be used in any other use: but ye shall in no wise eat of it.

25 For whosoever eateth the fat of the beast, of which men offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord , even the soul that eateth it shall be cut off from his people.

26 Moreover ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings.

27 Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.

28 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

29 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, He that offereth the sacrifice of his peace offerings unto the Lord shall bring his oblation unto the Lord of the sacrifice of his peace offerings.

30 His own hands shall bring the offerings of the Lord made by fire, the fat with the breast, it shall he bring, that the breast may be waved for a wave offering before the Lord .

31 And the priest shall burn the fat upon the altar: but the breast shall be Aaron's and his sons'.

32 And the right shoulder shall ye give unto the priest for an heave offering of the sacrifices of your peace offerings.

33 He among the sons of Aaron, that offereth the blood of the peace offerings, and the fat, shall have the right shoulder for his part.

34 For the wave breast and the heave shoulder have I taken of the children of Israel from off the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and have given them unto Aaron the priest and unto his sons by a statute for ever from among the children of Israel.

35 This is the portion of the anointing of Aaron, and of the anointing of his sons, out of the offerings of the Lord made by fire, in the day when he presented them to minister unto the Lord in the priest's office;

36 Which the Lord commanded to be given them of the children of Israel, in the day that he anointed them, by a statute for ever throughout their generations.

37 This is the law of the burnt offering, of the meat offering, and of the sin offering, and of the trespass offering, and of the consecrations, and of the sacrifice of the peace offerings;

38 Which the Lord commanded Moses in mount Sinai, in the day that he commanded the children of Israel to offer their oblations unto the Lord , in the wilderness of Sinai.

The Priest’s Part in the Offerings

7 ‘Now this is the law of the ( A ) guilt offering; it is most holy. 2 In ( B ) the place where they slaughter the burnt offering they are to slaughter the guilt offering, and the priest shall sprinkle its blood around on the altar. 3 Then he shall offer from it all its fat: the ( C ) fat tail and the fat that covers the entrails, 4 and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them, which is on the loins; and he shall remove the lobe on the liver ( D ) with the kidneys. 5 The priest shall offer them up in smoke on the altar as an offering by fire to the Lord ; it is a guilt offering. 6 ( E ) Every male among the priests may eat it. It shall be eaten in a holy place; it is most holy. 7 The guilt offering is like the ( F ) sin offering: there is one law for them. The ( G ) priest who makes atonement with it [ a ] shall have it. 8 Also the priest who presents anyone’s burnt offering, [ b ] that priest shall have for himself the hide of the burnt offering which he has presented. 9 Likewise, every grain offering that is baked in the oven and everything prepared in a [ c ] pan or on a ( H ) griddle [ d ] shall belong to the priest who presents it. 10 Every grain offering, mixed with oil or dry, shall [ e ] belong to all the sons of Aaron, [ f ] to all alike.

11 ‘Now this is the law of the ( I ) sacrifice of peace offerings which shall be presented to the Lord . 12 If he offers it by way of ( J ) thanksgiving, then along with the sacrifice of thanksgiving he shall offer ( K ) unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers [ g ] spread with oil, and cakes of well stirred fine flour mixed with oil. 13 With the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving, he shall present his offering with cakes of ( L ) leavened bread. 14 Of [ h ] this he shall present one of every offering as a [ i ] contribution to the Lord ; ( M ) it shall [ j ] belong to the priest who sprinkles the blood of the peace offerings.

15 ( N ) Now as for the flesh of the sacrifice of his thanksgiving peace offerings, it shall be eaten on the day of his offering; he shall not leave any of it over until morning. 16 But if the sacrifice of his offering is a [ k ] ( O ) vow or a [ l ] voluntary offering, it shall be eaten on the day that he offers his sacrifice, and on the next [ m ] day what is left of it may be eaten; 17 ( P ) but what is left over from the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day shall be burned with fire. 18 So if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings is ever eaten on the third day, he who offers it will not be accepted, and it will not be credited to him. It will be an ( Q ) unclean thing, and the person who eats it shall bear his punishment.

19 ‘Also the flesh that touches anything unclean shall not be eaten; it shall be burned with fire. [ n ] As for other flesh, anyone who is clean may eat such flesh. 20 ( R ) But the person who eats the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings which belong to the Lord , [ o ] when he is unclean, that person ( S ) shall be cut off from his people. 21 ( T ) When anyone touches anything unclean, whether human uncleanness, or an unclean animal, or any unclean [ p ] detestable thing, and eats of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings which belong to the Lord , that person shall be cut off from his people.’”

22 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 23 “Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘You shall not eat ( U ) any fat from an ox, a sheep, or a goat. 24 Also the fat of an animal which dies and the fat of an animal ( V ) torn by animals may be put to any other use, but you certainly are not to eat it. 25 For whoever eats the fat of the animal from which [ q ] an offering by fire is offered to the Lord , the person who eats it shall also be cut off from his people. 26 And ( W ) you are not to eat any blood, either of bird or animal, in any of your dwellings. 27 Any person who eats any blood, that person shall also be cut off from his people.’”

28 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 29 “Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘He who offers ( X ) the sacrifice of his peace offerings to the Lord shall bring his offering to the Lord from the sacrifice of his peace offerings. 30 His own hands are to bring offerings by fire to the Lord . He shall bring the fat with the breast, so that the ( Y ) breast may be [ r ] presented as a wave offering before the Lord . 31 And the priest shall offer up the fat in smoke on the altar, but ( Z ) the breast shall belong to Aaron and to his sons. 32 And you shall give ( AA ) the right thigh to the priest as a [ s ] contribution from the sacrifices of your peace offerings. 33 The one among the sons of Aaron who offers the blood of the peace offerings and the fat, the right thigh shall be his as his portion. 34 For I have taken from the sons of Israel ( AB ) the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the [ t ] contribution from the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons as their allotted portion forever from the sons of Israel.

35 ‘This is the ( AC ) allotment to Aaron and the allotment to his sons from the offerings by fire to the Lord , on that day when he presented them to serve as priests to the Lord . 36 [ u ] These the Lord had commanded to be given them from the sons of Israel on the day that He ( AD ) anointed them. It is their allotted portion forever throughout their generations.’”

37 This is the law of the burnt offering, the grain offering, the sin offering and the guilt offering, and ( AE ) the ordination offering and the sacrifice of peace offerings, 38 ( AF ) which the Lord commanded Moses on Mount Sinai on the day that He commanded the sons of Israel to [ v ] present their offerings to the Lord in the wilderness of Sinai.

The Guilt Offering

7 “‘These are the regulations for the guilt offering, ( A ) which is most holy: 2 The guilt offering is to be slaughtered in the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered, and its blood is to be splashed against the sides of the altar. 3 All its fat ( B ) shall be offered: the fat tail and the fat that covers the internal organs, 4 both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which is to be removed with the kidneys. ( C ) 5 The priest shall burn them on the altar ( D ) as a food offering presented to the Lord . It is a guilt offering. 6 Any male in a priest’s family may eat it, ( E ) but it must be eaten in the sanctuary area; it is most holy. ( F )

7 “‘The same law applies to both the sin offering [ a ] ( G ) and the guilt offering: ( H ) They belong to the priest ( I ) who makes atonement with them. ( J ) 8 The priest who offers a burnt offering for anyone may keep its hide ( K ) for himself. 9 Every grain offering baked in an oven ( L ) or cooked in a pan ( M ) or on a griddle ( N ) belongs to the priest who offers it, 10 and every grain offering, whether mixed with olive oil or dry, belongs equally to all the sons of Aaron.

The Fellowship Offering

11 “‘These are the regulations for the fellowship offering anyone may present to the Lord :

12 “‘If they offer it as an expression of thankfulness, then along with this thank offering ( O ) they are to offer thick loaves ( P ) made without yeast ( Q ) and with olive oil mixed in, thin loaves ( R ) made without yeast and brushed with oil, ( S ) and thick loaves of the finest flour well-kneaded and with oil mixed in. 13 Along with their fellowship offering of thanksgiving ( T ) they are to present an offering with thick loaves of bread made with yeast. ( U ) 14 They are to bring one of each kind as an offering, a contribution to the Lord ; it belongs to the priest who splashes the blood of the fellowship offering against the altar. 15 The meat of their fellowship offering of thanksgiving must be eaten on the day it is offered; they must leave none of it till morning. ( V )

16 “‘If, however, their offering is the result of a vow ( W ) or is a freewill offering, ( X ) the sacrifice shall be eaten on the day they offer it, but anything left over may be eaten on the next day. ( Y ) 17 Any meat of the sacrifice left over till the third day must be burned up. ( Z ) 18 If any meat of the fellowship offering ( AA ) is eaten on the third day, the one who offered it will not be accepted. ( AB ) It will not be reckoned ( AC ) to their credit, for it has become impure; the person who eats any of it will be held responsible. ( AD )

19 “‘Meat that touches anything ceremonially unclean must not be eaten; it must be burned up. As for other meat, anyone ceremonially clean may eat it. 20 But if anyone who is unclean ( AE ) eats any meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the Lord , they must be cut off from their people. ( AF ) 21 Anyone who touches something unclean ( AG ) —whether human uncleanness or an unclean animal or any unclean creature that moves along the ground [ b ] —and then eats any of the meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the Lord must be cut off from their people.’”

Eating Fat and Blood Forbidden

22 The Lord said to Moses, 23 “Say to the Israelites: ‘Do not eat any of the fat of cattle, sheep or goats. ( AH ) 24 The fat of an animal found dead or torn by wild animals ( AI ) may be used for any other purpose, but you must not eat it. 25 Anyone who eats the fat of an animal from which a food offering may be [ c ] presented to the Lord must be cut off from their people. 26 And wherever you live, you must not eat the blood ( AJ ) of any bird or animal. 27 Anyone who eats blood ( AK ) must be cut off from their people.’”

The Priests’ Share

28 The Lord said to Moses, 29 “Say to the Israelites: ‘Anyone who brings a fellowship offering to the Lord is to bring part of it as their sacrifice to the Lord . 30 With their own hands they are to present the food offering to the Lord ; they are to bring the fat, together with the breast, and wave the breast before the Lord as a wave offering. ( AL ) 31 The priest shall burn the fat on the altar, ( AM ) but the breast belongs to Aaron and his sons. ( AN ) 32 You are to give the right thigh of your fellowship offerings to the priest as a contribution. ( AO ) 33 The son of Aaron who offers the blood and the fat of the fellowship offering shall have the right thigh as his share. 34 From the fellowship offerings of the Israelites, I have taken the breast that is waved and the thigh ( AP ) that is presented and have given them to Aaron the priest and his sons ( AQ ) as their perpetual share from the Israelites.’”

35 This is the portion of the food offerings presented to the Lord that were allotted to Aaron and his sons on the day they were presented to serve the Lord as priests. 36 On the day they were anointed, ( AR ) the Lord commanded that the Israelites give this to them as their perpetual share for the generations to come.

37 These, then, are the regulations for the burnt offering, ( AS ) the grain offering, ( AT ) the sin offering, the guilt offering, the ordination offering ( AU ) and the fellowship offering, 38 which the Lord gave Moses ( AV ) at Mount Sinai ( AW ) in the Desert of Sinai on the day he commanded the Israelites to bring their offerings to the Lord .
