Leviticus 24

Rules about oil and the bread that the people give to the Lord

24 The Lord said to Moses, 2 ‘Tell Israel's people that they must bring to you the best oil. This will cause the light to burn all the time. 3 Aaron must put more oil in the lamp from evening to morning in front of the Lord . The lamp is outside the curtain. That curtain is in the Holy Place. The light must never go out. This rule is for now and for all time to come. 4 The lamps on the gold lampstand must burn always in front of the Lord . [ a ]

5 The people must bake 12 loaves of bread. They must use the best flour. They must weigh the flour for each loaf. They must use two tenths (2/10) of an ephah (4 litres). 6 They must put the loaves on a table in two rows in front of the Lord . There must be six loaves in each row. 7 They must put incense near each row. They must burn the incense as a gift to the Lord instead of the bread. 8 They must put the bread on the table every Sabbath. It is a covenant between Israel's people and the Lord . 9 The bread is for Aaron and for his sons. They must eat it in a holy place. It is their holy part of the burnt offering to the Lord .’

The story of a man who said bad things about the Lord

10 There was a man. His mother was an Israelite and his father was a man from Egypt. The man had a quarrel with an Israelite man. 11 The Israelite woman's son said bad things about God. The people took him to Moses. (The name of the mother was Shelomith. She was the daughter of Dibri from the family of Dan.) 12 They locked the man up. The Lord told them what to do with him.

13 The Lord said to Moses, 14 ‘Take the man outside the camp. All the people who heard him speak must put a hand on him. All the people must throw stones at him until he is dead. 15 Tell Israel's people, “It is a sin if any man says bad things about God's name. 16 He must die. All the people must throw stones at him until he is dead.” You must kill anyone who says bad things about the Lord 's name. They may be a foreigner or an Israelite. You must kill them.

17 If any man kills another man you must kill him. 18 A man might kill an animal that belongs to another man. Then he must give an animal that is alive to the man. You must give a living animal if you take a living animal's life. 19 If a man hurts another person, you must punish him as he deserves. Hurt him in the same way that he has hurt the other person. 20 If he has broken one of the person's bones, break one of his bones. If he hurt the person's eye, hurt his eye. If he has broken a person's tooth, break his tooth. 21 A man might hit an animal so that it dies. That man must give back an animal that is alive. But if he kills a man, you must punish him with death. 22 This rule is for all the people. It is the same rule for Israelites and foreigners. I am the Lord your God.’

23 Moses spoke to Israel's people. A man had said bad things about God. They took him outside the camp. They threw stones at him until he died. Israel's people did as the Lord had told Moses.

Footnotes

  1. 24:4 The lampstand had seven arms, like the branches of a tree. There was a lamp on the end of each branch.

The Lampstand and the Holy Bread

24 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Command the Israelites to bring to you pure oil from crushed olives. That oil is for the lamps that must burn without stopping. 3 Aaron will keep the light burning in the Meeting Tent before the Lord from evening until morning. This light will be outside the curtain that hangs in front of the Box that holds the Agreement. [ a ] This law will continue forever. 4 Aaron must always keep the lamps burning on the lampstand of pure gold before the Lord .

5 “Take fine flour and bake twelve loaves with it. Use 16 cups [ b ] of flour for each loaf. 6 Put them in two rows on the golden table before the Lord . Six loaves will be in each row. 7 Put pure frankincense on each row. This will help the Lord remember the gift. 8 Every Sabbath day Aaron will put the bread in order before the Lord . This must be done forever. This agreement with the Israelites will continue forever. 9 That bread will belong to Aaron and his sons. They will eat the bread in a holy place, because that bread is one of the special gifts to the Lord . It is Aaron’s share forever.”

The Man Who Cursed God

10 There was a son of an Israelite woman and an Egyptian father. He was walking among the Israelites, and he started fighting in camp. 11 The Israelite woman’s son began cursing, using the Lord’s name in a bad way, so the people brought him to Moses. (The name of the man’s mother was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, from the tribe of Dan.) 12 The people held him as a prisoner and waited for the Lord ’s command to be made clear to them.

13 Then the Lord said to Moses, 14 “Bring the man who cursed to a place outside the camp. Then bring together everyone who heard him curse. They will put their hands on his head. [ c ] And then all the people must throw stones at him and kill him. 15 You must tell the Israelites: Anyone who curses their God must be punished. 16 Anyone who speaks against the name of the Lord must be put to death. All the people must stone him. Any foreigner or anyone born in Israel who uses the Lord’s name in a bad way must be put to death.

17 “And whoever kills another person must be put to death. 18 Whoever kills an animal that belongs to another person must give another animal to take its place. [ d ]

19 “And whoever causes an injury to their neighbor must be given the same kind of injury: 20 a broken bone for a broken bone, an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. The same kind of injury a person gives another person must be given that person. 21 Whoever kills an animal must pay for the animal. But whoever kills another person must be put to death.

22 “The law will be the same for foreigners and for people from your own country. This is because I am the Lord your God.”

23 Then Moses spoke to the Israelites, and they took the man who cursed to a place outside the camp. Then they killed him with stones. So the Israelites did just what the Lord had commanded Moses.

  4. Leviticus 24:18 give … its place Literally, “pay for it, life for life.”

24 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Command the children of Israel, that they bring unto thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamps to burn continually.

3 Without the vail of the testimony, in the tabernacle of the congregation, shall Aaron order it from the evening unto the morning before the Lord continually: it shall be a statute for ever in your generations.

4 He shall order the lamps upon the pure candlestick before the Lord continually.

5 And thou shalt take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof: two tenth deals shall be in one cake.

6 And thou shalt set them in two rows, six on a row, upon the pure table before the Lord .

7 And thou shalt put pure frankincense upon each row, that it may be on the bread for a memorial, even an offering made by fire unto the Lord .

8 Every sabbath he shall set it in order before the Lord continually, being taken from the children of Israel by an everlasting covenant.

9 And it shall be Aaron's and his sons'; and they shall eat it in the holy place: for it is most holy unto him of the offerings of the Lord made by fire by a perpetual statute.

10 And the son of an Israelitish woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the children of Israel: and this son of the Israelitish woman and a man of Israel strove together in the camp;

11 And the Israelitish woman's son blasphemed the name of the Lord, and cursed. And they brought him unto Moses: (and his mother's name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan:)

12 And they put him in ward, that the mind of the Lord might be shewed them.

13 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

14 Bring forth him that hath cursed without the camp; and let all that heard him lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him.

15 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Whosoever curseth his God shall bear his sin.

16 And he that blasphemeth the name of the Lord , he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the Lord, shall be put to death.

17 And he that killeth any man shall surely be put to death.

18 And he that killeth a beast shall make it good; beast for beast.

19 And if a man cause a blemish in his neighbour; as he hath done, so shall it be done to him;

20 Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again.

21 And he that killeth a beast, he shall restore it: and he that killeth a man, he shall be put to death.

22 Ye shall have one manner of law, as well for the stranger, as for one of your own country: for I am the Lord your God.

23 And Moses spake to the children of Israel, that they should bring forth him that had cursed out of the camp, and stone him with stones. And the children of Israel did as the Lord commanded Moses.

The Lamp and the Bread of the Sanctuary

24 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Command the sons of Israel that they bring to you ( A ) clear oil from beaten olives for the [ a ] light, to make a lamp [ b ] burn continually. 3 Outside the veil of the testimony in the tent of meeting, Aaron shall keep it in order from evening to morning before the Lord continually; it shall be a permanent statute throughout your generations. 4 He shall keep the lamps in order on the ( B ) pure gold lampstand before the Lord continually.

5 ( C ) Then you shall take fine flour and bake twelve [ c ] cakes with it; [ d ] two-tenths of an ephah shall be in each cake. 6 And you shall set them in two rows, six to a row, on the ( D ) pure gold table before the Lord . 7 You shall put pure frankincense on each row so that it may be ( E ) a memorial portion for the bread, an offering by fire to the Lord . 8 ( F ) Every Sabbath day he shall set it in order before the Lord ( G ) continually; it is an everlasting covenant [ e ] for the sons of Israel. 9 And ( H ) it shall be for Aaron and his sons, and they shall eat it in a holy place; for it is most holy to him from the Lord s offerings by fire, his portion forever.”

10 Now the son of an Israelite woman—his father was an Egyptian—went out among the sons of Israel; and the Israelite woman’s son and an Israelite man had a fight within the camp. 11 And the son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the ( I ) Name and cursed. So they brought him to Moses. (Now his mother’s name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan.) 12 Then they put him in custody, waiting for Moses to give them a clear decision in accordance with ( J ) the command of the Lord .

13 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 14 “Bring the one who has cursed outside the camp, and have all who heard him ( K ) lay their hands on his head; then ( L ) have all the congregation stone him. 15 You shall also speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘ ( M ) If anyone curses his God, then he will bear the responsibility for his sin. 16 Moreover, the one who ( N ) blasphemes the name of the Lord must be put to death; all the congregation shall certainly stone him. The stranger as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.

An Eye for an Eye

17 ‘Now ( O ) if someone [ f ] takes any human life, he must be put to death. 18 But ( P ) the one who [ g ] takes the life of an animal shall make restitution, life for life. 19 If someone injures his neighbor, just as he has done, so shall it be done to him: 20 ( Q ) fracture for fracture, ( R ) eye for eye, tooth for tooth; just as he has injured a person, so shall it be [ h ] inflicted on him. 21 So the one who [ i ] kills an animal shall make restitution, but ( S ) the one who [ j ] kills a person shall be put to death. 22 There shall be only ( T ) one [ k ] standard for you; it shall be for the stranger as well as the native, for I am the Lord your God.’” 23 Then Moses spoke to the sons of Israel, and they brought the one who had cursed outside the camp, and stoned him with stones. So the sons of Israel did just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Olive Oil and Bread Set Before the Lord ( A )

24 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Command the Israelites to bring you clear oil of pressed olives for the light so that the lamps may be kept burning continually. 3 Outside the curtain that shields the ark of the covenant law in the tent of meeting, Aaron is to tend the lamps before the Lord from evening till morning, continually. This is to be a lasting ordinance ( B ) for the generations to come. 4 The lamps on the pure gold lampstand ( C ) before the Lord must be tended continually.

5 “Take the finest flour and bake twelve loaves of bread, ( D ) using two-tenths of an ephah [ a ] ( E ) for each loaf. 6 Arrange them in two stacks, six in each stack, on the table of pure gold ( F ) before the Lord . 7 By each stack put some pure incense ( G ) as a memorial [ b ] portion ( H ) to represent the bread and to be a food offering presented to the Lord . 8 This bread is to be set out before the Lord regularly, ( I ) Sabbath after Sabbath, ( J ) on behalf of the Israelites, as a lasting covenant. 9 It belongs to Aaron and his sons, ( K ) who are to eat it in the sanctuary area, ( L ) because it is a most holy ( M ) part of their perpetual share of the food offerings presented to the Lord .”

A Blasphemer Put to Death

10 Now the son of an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father went out among the Israelites, and a fight broke out in the camp between him and an Israelite. 11 The son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the Name ( N ) with a curse; ( O ) so they brought him to Moses. ( P ) (His mother’s name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri the Danite.) ( Q ) 12 They put him in custody until the will of the Lord should be made clear to them. ( R )

13 Then the Lord said to Moses: 14 “Take the blasphemer outside the camp. All those who heard him are to lay their hands on his head, and the entire assembly is to stone him. ( S ) 15 Say to the Israelites: ‘Anyone who curses their God ( T ) will be held responsible; ( U ) 16 anyone who blasphemes ( V ) the name of the Lord is to be put to death. ( W ) The entire assembly must stone them. Whether foreigner or native-born, when they blaspheme the Name they are to be put to death.

17 “‘Anyone who takes the life of a human being is to be put to death. ( X ) 18 Anyone who takes the life of someone’s animal must make restitution ( Y ) —life for life. 19 Anyone who injures their neighbor is to be injured in the same manner: 20 fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. ( Z ) The one who has inflicted the injury must suffer the same injury. 21 Whoever kills an animal must make restitution, ( AA ) but whoever kills a human being is to be put to death. ( AB ) 22 You are to have the same law for the foreigner ( AC ) and the native-born. ( AD ) I am the Lord your God.’”

23 Then Moses spoke to the Israelites, and they took the blasphemer outside the camp and stoned him. ( AE ) The Israelites did as the Lord commanded Moses.
