Leviticus 17

The people must not eat blood

17 The Lord said to Moses, 2 ‘Tell this to Aaron and his sons and all the people. The Lord has given all these rules. 3 If a person sacrifices a bull, a sheep or a goat in the fields, that is a sin. Or if a person sacrifices it in the camp, that is a sin. 4 The animal is an offering to the Lord . The person should bring it to the door of the tabernacle. He should offer it to the Lord there. The person who offers a sacrifice anywhere else has sinned. He has sacrificed an animal in the wrong way. He must leave the camp. 5 This rule will stop the people giving sacrifices to the Lord in the fields. They must bring their gifts to the priest. They will be friendship offerings to the Lord . The priest will be at the door of the Tent of Meeting. 6 He must shake the blood of the animal on the Lord 's altar. That altar is at the door of the Tent of Meeting. The priest must burn the fat. The smell of it while it is burning will give the Lord pleasure. 7 The people give sacrifices in the fields to worship idols that seem like goats. They must never do this again. This rule is for now and for all time.

8 If an Israelite gives a sacrifice or a burnt offering he must offer it at the Tent of Meeting's door. A foreigner may live among you. If he gives a sacrifice he must offer it at the Tent of Meeting's door. 9 If they did not offer it to the Lord at the Tent of Meeting's door, they are sinning. You must send them away from the camp.

10 An Israelite or a foreigner who lives among you must not eat blood. And they must not drink it. If somebody does, God will turn away from him. He will take that person away from his people. 11 The blood of an animal gives it life. You must put the blood on the altar. God has given the blood to you to atone for your sins. It makes your life right again, because of the blood. 12 For this reason, Israel's people must not eat blood. And the people who are travelling with them must not eat blood. [ a ]

13 A person may catch an animal or a bird that is clean to eat. If he does, he must pour its blood on the ground. He must cover the blood with some earth. 14 The animal's life is in its blood. That is why no Israelite should eat any animal's blood. You must send any person that eats blood away from your people.

15 An Israelite or a foreign person may find a dead animal. If he eats it, he must wash his clothes and his body. He will be unclean until evening. Then he will become clean. A person might find an animal or a bird that a wild animal has killed. He must wash his clothes and his body. He will be unclean until evening. 16 If that person does not wash his clothes and his body, it is his own mistake.’ [ b ]

Footnotes

  1. 17:12 Jews still obey this rule. They call meat with no blood in it ‘kosher meat’.
  2. 17:16 Animals that have died have the blood in them. And animals that other animals have killed have the blood in them. So they will not be clean.

Rules About Killing and Eating Animals

17 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to Aaron and to his sons, and to all the Israelites. Tell them this is what the Lord has commanded: 3 Any one of you Israelites might kill a bull, a lamb, or a goat. You might be in the camp or outside the camp. 4 It doesn’t matter; you must bring that animal to the entrance of the Meeting Tent. You must give a part of that animal as a gift to the Lord . You spilled blood, so you must take a gift to the Lord ’s Holy Tent. If you don’t take part of the animal as a gift to the Lord , you must be separated from your people! 5 This rule is so that you will bring your fellowship offering to the Lord . You must bring any animal that you kill in the field to the Lord at the entrance of the Meeting Tent. Bring those animals to the priest. 6 Then the priest will throw their blood onto the Lord ’s altar near the entrance of the Meeting Tent. And the priest will burn the fat from those animals on the altar as a sweet-smelling gift to the Lord . 7 In this way you will stop being unfaithful to me by offering sacrifices to your ‘goat gods.’ This law will continue forever.

8 “Tell the people: Any citizen of Israel, traveler, or foreigner living among you might want to offer a burnt offering or some other sacrifice. 9 They must take the sacrifice to the entrance of the Meeting Tent and offer it to the Lord . Whoever does not do this will be separated from their people.

10 “I will turn against those who eat blood whether they are citizens of Israel or foreigners living among you, I will separate them from their people. 11 This is because the life of the body is in the blood. I have told you that you must pour the blood on the altar to purify yourselves. It is the blood that makes a person pure. 12 That is why I am telling you Israelites and the foreigners living among you that you must not eat blood.

13 “If any of you, whether Israelite or foreigner living among you, goes hunting and kills a wild animal or bird that you are allowed to eat, you must pour the blood of that animal on the ground and cover it with dirt. 14 This is because the life of every kind of animal is in its blood. So I give this command to the Israelites: Don’t eat meat that still has blood in it! Whoever eats blood must be separated from their people.

15 “If any of you, whether Israelite or foreigner living among you, eats an animal that died by itself or was killed by some other animal, you will be unclean until evening. You must wash your clothes and bathe your whole body with water. 16 If you don’t wash your clothes and bathe your whole body, you will be responsible for your guilt.”

17 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Speak unto Aaron, and unto his sons, and unto all the children of Israel, and say unto them; This is the thing which the Lord hath commanded, saying,

3 What man soever there be of the house of Israel, that killeth an ox, or lamb, or goat, in the camp, or that killeth it out of the camp,

4 And bringeth it not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, to offer an offering unto the Lord before the tabernacle of the Lord ; blood shall be imputed unto that man; he hath shed blood; and that man shall be cut off from among his people:

5 To the end that the children of Israel may bring their sacrifices, which they offer in the open field, even that they may bring them unto the Lord , unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest, and offer them for peace offerings unto the Lord .

6 And the priest shall sprinkle the blood upon the altar of the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and burn the fat for a sweet savour unto the Lord .

7 And they shall no more offer their sacrifices unto devils, after whom they have gone a whoring. This shall be a statute for ever unto them throughout their generations.

8 And thou shalt say unto them, Whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers which sojourn among you, that offereth a burnt offering or sacrifice,

9 And bringeth it not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, to offer it unto the Lord ; even that man shall be cut off from among his people.

10 And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of blood; I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off from among his people.

11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.

12 Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul of you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger that sojourneth among you eat blood.

13 And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunteth and catcheth any beast or fowl that may be eaten; he shall even pour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust.

14 For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eateth it shall be cut off.

15 And every soul that eateth that which died of itself, or that which was torn with beasts, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger, he shall both wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even: then shall he be clean.

16 But if he wash them not, nor bathe his flesh; then he shall bear his iniquity.

Blood for Atonement

17 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to Aaron and to his sons and to all the sons of Israel, and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord has commanded, saying, 3 “Anyone from the house of Israel who slaughters an ox, a lamb, or a goat in the camp, or slaughters it outside the camp, 4 and ( A ) has not brought it to the doorway of the tent of meeting to present it as an offering to the Lord in front of the [ a ] tabernacle of the Lord , bloodshed is to be counted against that person. He has shed blood, and that person shall be cut off from among his people. 5 This shall be done so that the sons of Israel will bring their sacrifices which they were sacrificing [ b ] in the open field—so that they will bring them to the Lord at the doorway of the tent of meeting to the priest, and sacrifice them as sacrifices of peace offerings to the Lord . 6 The priest shall sprinkle the blood on the altar of the Lord at the doorway of the tent of meeting, and ( B ) offer up the fat in smoke as a soothing aroma to the Lord . 7 And ( C ) they shall no longer offer their sacrifices to the [ c ] goat demons with which they play the prostitute. This shall be a permanent statute to them throughout their generations.”’

8 “Then you shall say to them, ‘Anyone from the house of Israel, or from the strangers who reside among them, who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice, 9 and ( D ) does not bring it to the doorway of the tent of meeting to [ d ] offer it to the Lord , that person also shall be cut off from his people.

10 ( E ) And anyone from the house of Israel, or from the strangers who reside among them, who eats any blood, ( F ) I will set My face against that person who eats the blood, and will cut him off from among his people. 11 For ( G ) the [ e ] life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for ( H ) it is the blood by reason of the [ f ] life that makes atonement.’ 12 Therefore I said to the sons of Israel, ‘No person among you may eat blood, nor may any stranger who resides among you eat blood.’ 13 So when anyone from the sons of Israel, or from the strangers who reside among them, [ g ] while hunting catches an animal or a bird which may be eaten, ( I ) he shall pour out its blood and cover it with dirt.

14 ( J ) For as for the [ h ] life of all flesh, its blood is identified with its [ i ] life. Therefore I said to the sons of Israel, ‘You are not to eat the blood of any flesh, for the [ j ] life of all flesh is its blood; whoever eats it shall be cut off.’ 15 And ( K ) any person who eats an animal which dies or is torn by animals , whether he is a native or a stranger, shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and remain unclean until evening; then he will become clean. 16 But if he does not wash his clothes and bathe his body, then ( L ) he shall bear the responsibility for his [ k ] guilt.”

Eating Blood Forbidden

17 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to Aaron and his sons ( A ) and to all the Israelites and say to them: ‘This is what the Lord has commanded: 3 Any Israelite who sacrifices an ox, [ a ] a lamb ( B ) or a goat ( C ) in the camp or outside of it 4 instead of bringing it to the entrance to the tent of meeting ( D ) to present it as an offering to the Lord in front of the tabernacle of the Lord ( E ) —that person shall be considered guilty of bloodshed; they have shed blood and must be cut off from their people. ( F ) 5 This is so the Israelites will bring to the Lord the sacrifices they are now making in the open fields. They must bring them to the priest, that is, to the Lord , at the entrance to the tent of meeting and sacrifice them as fellowship offerings. ( G ) 6 The priest is to splash the blood against the altar ( H ) of the Lord ( I ) at the entrance to the tent of meeting and burn the fat as an aroma pleasing to the Lord . ( J ) 7 They must no longer offer any of their sacrifices to the goat idols [ b ] ( K ) to whom they prostitute themselves. ( L ) This is to be a lasting ordinance ( M ) for them and for the generations to come.’ ( N )

8 “Say to them: ‘Any Israelite or any foreigner residing among them who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice 9 and does not bring it to the entrance to the tent ( O ) of meeting ( P ) to sacrifice it to the Lord ( Q ) must be cut off from the people of Israel.

10 “‘I will set my face against any Israelite or any foreigner residing among them who eats blood, ( R ) and I will cut them off from the people. 11 For the life of a creature is in the blood, ( S ) and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life. [ c ] ( T ) 12 Therefore I say to the Israelites, “None of you may eat blood, nor may any foreigner residing among you eat blood.”

13 “‘Any Israelite or any foreigner residing among you who hunts any animal or bird that may be eaten must drain out the blood and cover it with earth, ( U ) 14 because the life of every creature is its blood. That is why I have said to the Israelites, “You must not eat the blood of any creature, because the life of every creature is its blood; anyone who eats it must be cut off.” ( V )

15 “‘Anyone, whether native-born or foreigner, who eats anything ( W ) found dead or torn by wild animals ( X ) must wash their clothes and bathe with water, ( Y ) and they will be ceremonially unclean till evening; ( Z ) then they will be clean. 16 But if they do not wash their clothes and bathe themselves, they will be held responsible. ( AA ) ’”
