Leviticus 14

Rules for the people after a disease of the skin leaves them

14 The Lord said to Moses, 2 ‘These rules are for a person who has had a disease on his skin. They are rules about how to make him clean. When the disease leaves the person, you must bring him to the priest. 3 The priest must go outside the camp and he must look at the person. If the disease has gone away, 4 he must speak to the person. He must tell the person that he must bring two birds. They must be birds that are good for food. The birds must be alive. They must also bring wood from the cedar tree, red wool and some hyssop. 5 The priest will bring a pot with water in it. He will hold one of the birds over the pot and he will kill it. 6 The priest will take the other bird and the wood from the cedar tree. He will take the red wool and the hyssop. He will put all of them into the blood of the dead bird. 7 The priest will shake the blood over the person who had the disease. He will do this seven times. The priest will then say that the person is clean. The priest will let the live bird go. It will fly away.

8 The person who had the disease must wash his clothes. He must wash his body with water and he must cut off all his hair. Then he will be clean. He can go into the camp. But he must stay outside the home that he has made from animal skins for seven days. 9 On day seven, he must cut all the hair off his head and his face. He must wash his clothes and his body with water.

10 On the eighth day, the person must bring two young male sheep and one female sheep. The female sheep must be one year old. Both the animals must be perfect. He must also bring three tenths (3/10) of an ephah of flour (about six litres) mixed with oil. And he must bring a cup of olive oil. 11 The priest who is making him clean must be there. He must bring the person to the door of the Tent of Meeting. The person must bring with him his offerings to the Lord .

12 The priest must take one of the male sheep and the oil. He must lift them up to the Lord as a gift. 13 He must kill the sheep at the north side of the altar. That is where they kill the sin offering and the burnt offering. The gift is holy. It is food for the priests. 14 The priest must put some of the blood on the lowest part of the person's right ear. He must put blood on the thumb of the person's right hand. And he must put blood on the big toe of the person's right foot. 15 The priest must pour some of the oil into his own left hand. 16 He must put a finger from his right hand into the oil. He must shake the oil seven times in front of the Lord 's altar. 17 The priest must put oil on the lowest part of the person's right ear. He must put some of the oil on the thumb of the person's right hand. He must put some of the oil on the big toe of the person's right foot. He will put the oil on top of the offering's blood. 18 The priest must put the oil that he did not use on the person's head. This makes his atonement in front of the Lord .

19 Then the priest must offer the sin offering. That will make atonement for the man who will become clean. Then the priest must kill another sheep. It is a burnt offering. 20 The priest must sacrifice the dead animal. It is a burnt offering. The priest must offer it on the altar. He must burn the flour and the oil with it on the altar. All this will make atonement for the person. This makes the person who had the disease clean.

21 If the person is poor, he must bring one young male sheep. And he must bring a tenth of an ephah of flour (about 2 litres) mixed with oil. And he must give a cup of olive oil. The priest must lift them to the Lord. 22 The person must also bring two birds. They must be doves or pigeons. These will be his gift. One bird is for a sin offering and the other one is for a burnt offering.

23 On the eighth day, the person must bring his gifts to the Lord . He must bring them to the door of the Tent of Meeting. 24 The priest will take the young sheep and the oil and he will lift them up to the Lord . 25 He will kill the sheep. He will put some of its blood on the lowest part of the person's ear. He will put the blood on the thumb of the person's right hand. He will put the blood on the big toe of the person's right foot. 26 The priest will pour some of the oil into his own left hand. 27 He will put a finger from his right hand into the oil. He will shake it seven times in front of the Lord 's altar. 28 He will put oil from his hand on the lowest part of the person's ear. He will also put oil on the thumb of the person's right hand. He will put oil on the big toe of the person's right foot. 29 The priest will put the oil that he did not use on the person's head. Then the Lord can see that he is clean. 30 The priest will kill the pigeons or doves. 31 One bird is for a sin offering. The priest will burn the other bird with the grain offering. This is how the priest will make atonement in front of the Lord . He will do it for the person who was not clean.

32 These are the rules for a person who had a disease in his skin. They are for a disease that he might give to other people. They are for people who are too poor to buy three sheep.’

Rules for a house that has a disease called mildew

33 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 34 ‘Canaan is my gift to you, to belong to you for ever. When you go into that land, I may put a disease called mildew [ a ] in a house there. 35 If a person finds mildew in his house, he must tell the priest. He must say, “I have found something like mildew in my house.” 36 The priest will tell the person what he should do. The person must take everything out of the house. If he does, those things will still be clean. Then the priest will go into the house. 37 He will look at the walls of the house. He will look for a green or red mark. If the mark goes into the wall, 38 the priest will leave the house. He will shut it up for seven days. 39 On the seventh day, the priest will return to the house. The mildew may be bigger. 40 The priest must say, “You must remove the stones that have mildew.” The person must put the stones outside the town. He must put them in a special place. 41 The person must cut the clay from inside the walls of the house. The person must put the clay from the walls outside the town. The person must put it in a place for things that are not clean. 42 The person who lives in the house must get some more stones. He must get some more clay. Then he can mend the wall.

43 A person might find mildew on the wall that he has mended. He must tell the priest. 44 The priest will look at the house. If the mildew is on more of the mended wall, the house is not clean. 45 The person must break the house into pieces. The person who lives in the house must put the stones outside the town. He must put the wood and the clay outside the town. He must put them in the place for things that are not clean.

46 A person may go into the house while it is shut up. If he does, he will not become clean until evening. 47 Any person who sleeps in a house with mildew must wash his clothes. And any person who eats in a house with mildew must wash his clothes.

48 If a person mends his house, the priest must look at it. There may not be any mildew. The priest will then say that it is clean. 49 The person must take two birds and some wood from the cedar tree. He must take red wool and hyssop. 50 The priest will bring a pot with water in it. He will hold one of the birds over the pot and he will kill it. 51 The priest will take the other bird and the wood from the cedar tree. He will take the red wool and the hyssop. He will put all of them into the blood of the dead bird. He will shake the blood and water over the house seven times. This will make the house clean. 52 The priest will use the birds and the wood from the cedar tree. And he will use the wool and the hyssop to make the house clean. 53 Then the priest will take the living bird outside the town. He will let the bird fly away. That will make atonement for the house. The person may then live in the house again.’

Moses tells the people what these rules are for

54 These are the rules for a disease in a person's skin. 55 These are the rules for mildew in clothes or in a house. 56 These are the rules for a mark on or under the skin. 57 These rules decide when a person has a disease. And they decide when he is clean. They show when a house has a disease. They are the rules for diseases in the skin and for mildew.

Footnotes

  1. 14:34 When material is wet and warm, mildew can grow on it. Mildew is a very small mould. It is soft and white and destroys the material.

Rules for Those With Skin Diseases

14 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “These are the rules for people who have had a skin disease and have been made well. These rules are for making them clean.

“A priest must look at those who had the skin disease. 3 The priest must go to them outside the camp and look to see if the skin disease is healed. 4 If they are healthy, the priest will tell them to do these things: They must bring two clean birds that are still alive, a piece of cedar wood, a piece of red cloth, and a hyssop plant. 5 Then the priest must order one bird to be killed in a clay bowl over running water. 6 He must take the other bird that is still alive and the piece of cedar wood, the piece of red cloth, and the hyssop plant and dip them in the blood of the bird that was killed over the running water. 7 He must sprinkle the blood seven times on those who had the skin disease. Then he must announce that they are clean. After that the priest must go to an open field and let the living bird go free.

8 “The people going through this purification ceremony must wash their clothes, shave off all their hair, and wash with water. Then they will be clean. They may then go into the camp, but they must stay outside their tent for seven days. 9 On the seventh day, they must shave off all their hair. They must shave their head, their beard, and their eyebrows—yes, all their hair. Then they must wash their clothes and bathe their bodies in water. Then they will be clean.

10 “On the eighth day, anyone who had a skin disease must take two male lambs that have nothing wrong with them and a one-year-old female lamb that has nothing wrong with it. They must also take 24 cups [ a ] of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering and 2/3 of a pint [ b ] of olive oil. 11 The priest must bring that person and those sacrifices before the Lord at the entrance of the Meeting Tent. (This must be the same priest who announced that the person is clean.) 12 The priest will take one of the lambs and the oil as a guilt offering. He will lift them in front of the Lord to show they were presented to God. 13 Then the priest will kill the male lamb in the holy place where they kill the sin offering and the burnt offering. Like the sin offering, the guilt offering belongs to the priest. It is very holy.

14 “The priest will take some of the blood of the guilt offering. He will put some of this blood on the tip of the right ear of the person to be made clean. The priest will put some of this blood on the thumb of the right hand and on the big toe of the right foot of that person. 15 The priest will also take some of the oil and pour it into his own left palm. 16 Then the priest will dip the finger of his right hand into the oil that is in his left palm. He will use his finger to sprinkle some of the oil seven times before the Lord . 17 Then he will put some of the oil that is in his palm on the person to be made clean. He will put that oil on the same places he put the blood of the guilt offering. The priest will put some of the oil on the tip of the person’s right ear, on the thumb of the right hand, and on the big toe of the person’s right foot. 18 He will put the oil that is left in his palm on the head of the person to be made clean. In this way he will make that person pure before the Lord .

19 “Then the priest must offer the sin offering to make that person pure. After that he will kill the animal for the burnt offering. 20 He will then offer up the burnt offering and the grain offering on the altar. In this way the priest will make that person pure, and that person will become clean.

21 “A poor person might not be able to afford all these offerings. So that poor person can use one male lamb as a guilt offering. It will be presented to God so that the priest can make that person pure. The poor person must take 8 cups [ c ] of fine flour mixed with oil. This flour will be used for a grain offering. The poor person must also take 2/3 of a pint of olive oil 22 and two doves or two young pigeons. Even poor people can afford these things. One bird will be a sin offering, and the other will be a burnt offering.

23 “On the eighth day, that person will bring these things to the priest at the entrance of the Meeting Tent. These things will be offered before the Lord so that the person can become clean. 24 The priest will take the lamb for the guilt offering and the oil, and he will lift them up to show they were offered before the Lord . 25 Then he will kill the lamb of the guilt offering, take some of its blood, and put it on the tip of the right ear of the person to be made clean. The priest will put some of this blood on the thumb of the right hand and on the big toe of the right foot of this person. 26 He will also pour some of this oil into his own left palm. 27 He will use the finger of his right hand to sprinkle some of the oil that is in his left palm seven times before the Lord . 28 Then he will put some of the oil that is in his palm on the same places he put the blood from the guilt offering. He will put some of the oil on the tip of the right ear of the person to be made clean. The priest will put some of the oil on the thumb of the right hand and on the big toe of the person’s right foot. 29 He will put the oil that is left in his palm on the head of the person to be made clean. In this way he will make that person pure before the Lord .

30 “Then the priest must offer one of the doves or young pigeons. (He must offer whichever the person can afford.) 31 He must offer one of these birds as a sin offering and the other bird as a burnt offering. He must offer the birds with the grain offering. In this way the priest will make that person pure before the Lord , and that person will become clean.”

32 These are the rules for making people clean after they become well from a skin disease. These are the rules for those who cannot afford the regular sacrifices for becoming clean.

Rules for Mildew in a House

33 The Lord also said to Moses and Aaron, 34 “I am giving the land of Canaan to your people. Your people will enter that land. At that time I might cause mildew to grow in someone’s house. 35 The person who owns that house must come and tell the priest, ‘I see something like mildew in my house.’

36 “Then the priest must order the people to take everything out of the house before he goes in to look at the mildew. Then the priest will not have to say everything in the house is unclean. After the people have taken everything out of the house, the priest will go in to look at the house. 37 He will look at the mildew. If the mildew on the walls of the house has holes that are a green or red color, and if the mildew goes into the wall’s surface, 38 he must go out of the house and lock the house for seven days.

39 “On the seventh day the priest must come back and check the house. If the mildew has spread on the walls of the house, 40 then he must order the people to tear out the stones with the mildew on them and throw them away. They must put these stones at a special unclean place outside the city. 41 Then the priest must have the entire house scraped inside. The people must throw away the plaster that was scraped off the walls. They must put that plaster at a special unclean place outside the city. 42 Then new stones must be put in the walls, and the walls must be covered with new plaster.

43 “Maybe someone took away the old stones and plaster and put in new stones and plaster. And maybe mildew again appears in that house. 44 Then the priest must come in and check the house. If the infection has spread in the house, it is a disease that spreads quickly to other places. So the house is unclean. 45 The house must be torn down. All the stones, plaster, and pieces of wood must be taken to the special unclean place outside the city. 46 Anyone who goes into that house will be unclean until evening. 47 Anyone who eats in that house or lies down in there must wash their clothes.

48 “After new stones and plaster are put in a house, the priest must check the house. If the mildew has not spread through the house, the priest will announce that the house is clean, because the mildew is gone.

49 “Then, to make the house clean, the priest must take two birds, a piece of cedar wood, a piece of red cloth, and a hyssop plant. 50 He will kill one bird in a clay bowl over running water. 51 Then he will take the cedar wood, the hyssop, the piece of red cloth, and the living bird and dip them in the blood of the bird that was killed over running water. Then he will sprinkle that blood on the house seven times. 52 In this way he will use these things to make the house clean. 53 He will go to an open field outside the city and let the living bird go free. In this way the priest will make the house pure. The house will be clean.”

54 These are the rules for any infection of leprosy, 55 for mildew on pieces of cloth or in a house. 56 These are the rules for swellings, rashes, or bright spots on the skin. 57 These rules teach when something is clean and when something is unclean. These are the rules about these kinds of disease.

  2. Leviticus 14:10 2/3 of a pint Literally, “1 log ” (.3 l). Also in verse 21.
  3. Leviticus 14:21 8 cups Literally, “1/10 of an ephah” (2.2 l).

14 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

2 This shall be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing: He shall be brought unto the priest:

3 And the priest shall go forth out of the camp; and the priest shall look, and, behold, if the plague of leprosy be healed in the leper;

4 Then shall the priest command to take for him that is to be cleansed two birds alive and clean, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop:

5 And the priest shall command that one of the birds be killed in an earthen vessel over running water:

6 As for the living bird, he shall take it, and the cedar wood, and the scarlet, and the hyssop, and shall dip them and the living bird in the blood of the bird that was killed over the running water:

7 And he shall sprinkle upon him that is to be cleansed from the leprosy seven times, and shall pronounce him clean, and shall let the living bird loose into the open field.

8 And he that is to be cleansed shall wash his clothes, and shave off all his hair, and wash himself in water, that he may be clean: and after that he shall come into the camp, and shall tarry abroad out of his tent seven days.

9 But it shall be on the seventh day, that he shall shave all his hair off his head and his beard and his eyebrows, even all his hair he shall shave off: and he shall wash his clothes, also he shall wash his flesh in water, and he shall be clean.

10 And on the eighth day he shall take two he lambs without blemish, and one ewe lamb of the first year without blemish, and three tenth deals of fine flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil, and one log of oil.

11 And the priest that maketh him clean shall present the man that is to be made clean, and those things, before the Lord , at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation:

12 And the priest shall take one he lamb, and offer him for a trespass offering, and the log of oil, and wave them for a wave offering before the Lord :

13 And he shall slay the lamb in the place where he shall kill the sin offering and the burnt offering, in the holy place: for as the sin offering is the priest's, so is the trespass offering: it is most holy:

14 And the priest shall take some of the blood of the trespass offering, and the priest shall put it upon the tip of the right ear of him that is to be cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot:

15 And the priest shall take some of the log of oil, and pour it into the palm of his own left hand:

16 And the priest shall dip his right finger in the oil that is in his left hand, and shall sprinkle of the oil with his finger seven times before the Lord :

17 And of the rest of the oil that is in his hand shall the priest put upon the tip of the right ear of him that is to be cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot, upon the blood of the trespass offering:

18 And the remnant of the oil that is in the priest's hand he shall pour upon the head of him that is to be cleansed: and the priest shall make an atonement for him before the Lord .

19 And the priest shall offer the sin offering, and make an atonement for him that is to be cleansed from his uncleanness; and afterward he shall kill the burnt offering:

20 And the priest shall offer the burnt offering and the meat offering upon the altar: and the priest shall make an atonement for him, and he shall be clean.

21 And if he be poor, and cannot get so much; then he shall take one lamb for a trespass offering to be waved, to make an atonement for him, and one tenth deal of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering, and a log of oil;

22 And two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, such as he is able to get; and the one shall be a sin offering, and the other a burnt offering.

23 And he shall bring them on the eighth day for his cleansing unto the priest, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, before the Lord .

24 And the priest shall take the lamb of the trespass offering, and the log of oil, and the priest shall wave them for a wave offering before the Lord :

25 And he shall kill the lamb of the trespass offering, and the priest shall take some of the blood of the trespass offering, and put it upon the tip of the right ear of him that is to be cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot:

26 And the priest shall pour of the oil into the palm of his own left hand:

27 And the priest shall sprinkle with his right finger some of the oil that is in his left hand seven times before the Lord :

28 And the priest shall put of the oil that is in his hand upon the tip of the right ear of him that is to be cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot, upon the place of the blood of the trespass offering:

29 And the rest of the oil that is in the priest's hand he shall put upon the head of him that is to be cleansed, to make an atonement for him before the Lord .

30 And he shall offer the one of the turtledoves, or of the young pigeons, such as he can get;

31 Even such as he is able to get, the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, with the meat offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for him that is to be cleansed before the Lord .

32 This is the law of him in whom is the plague of leprosy, whose hand is not able to get that which pertaineth to his cleansing.

33 And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

34 When ye be come into the land of Canaan, which I give to you for a possession, and I put the plague of leprosy in a house of the land of your possession;

35 And he that owneth the house shall come and tell the priest, saying, It seemeth to me there is as it were a plague in the house:

36 Then the priest shall command that they empty the house, before the priest go into it to see the plague, that all that is in the house be not made unclean: and afterward the priest shall go in to see the house:

37 And he shall look on the plague, and, behold, if the plague be in the walls of the house with hollow strakes, greenish or reddish, which in sight are lower than the wall;

38 Then the priest shall go out of the house to the door of the house, and shut up the house seven days:

39 And the priest shall come again the seventh day, and shall look: and, behold, if the plague be spread in the walls of the house;

40 Then the priest shall command that they take away the stones in which the plague is, and they shall cast them into an unclean place without the city:

41 And he shall cause the house to be scraped within round about, and they shall pour out the dust that they scrape off without the city into an unclean place:

42 And they shall take other stones, and put them in the place of those stones; and he shall take other morter, and shall plaister the house.

43 And if the plague come again, and break out in the house, after that he hath taken away the stones, and after he hath scraped the house, and after it is plaistered;

44 Then the priest shall come and look, and, behold, if the plague be spread in the house, it is a fretting leprosy in the house; it is unclean.

45 And he shall break down the house, the stones of it, and the timber thereof, and all the morter of the house; and he shall carry them forth out of the city into an unclean place.

46 Moreover he that goeth into the house all the while that it is shut up shall be unclean until the even.

47 And he that lieth in the house shall wash his clothes; and he that eateth in the house shall wash his clothes.

48 And if the priest shall come in, and look upon it, and, behold, the plague hath not spread in the house, after the house was plaistered: then the priest shall pronounce the house clean, because the plague is healed.

49 And he shall take to cleanse the house two birds, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop:

50 And he shall kill the one of the birds in an earthen vessel over running water:

51 And he shall take the cedar wood, and the hyssop, and the scarlet, and the living bird, and dip them in the blood of the slain bird, and in the running water, and sprinkle the house seven times:

52 And he shall cleanse the house with the blood of the bird, and with the running water, and with the living bird, and with the cedar wood, and with the hyssop, and with the scarlet:

53 But he shall let go the living bird out of the city into the open fields, and make an atonement for the house: and it shall be clean.

54 This is the law for all manner of plague of leprosy, and scall,

55 And for the leprosy of a garment, and of a house,

56 And for a rising, and for a scab, and for a bright spot:

57 To teach when it is unclean, and when it is clean: this is the law of leprosy.

Law of Cleansing a Person with Leprosy

14 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “This shall be the law of the person with leprosy on the day of his cleansing. ( A ) Now he shall be brought to the priest; 3 and the priest shall go ( B ) out to a place outside of the camp. Then the priest shall look, and if the [ a ] leprous infection has been healed in the person with leprosy, 4 then the priest shall give orders to take two live clean birds, ( C ) cedar wood, a [ b ] scarlet string, and hyssop for the one who is to be cleansed. 5 The priest shall also give orders to slaughter the one bird in an earthenware vessel over [ c ] running water. 6 As for the live bird, he shall take it together with ( D ) the cedar wood, the [ d ] scarlet string, and the ( E ) hyssop, and shall dip them and the live bird in the blood of the bird that was slaughtered over the [ e ] running water. 7 ( F ) He shall then sprinkle seven times the one who is to be cleansed from the leprosy and shall pronounce him clean, and shall let the live bird go free over the open field. 8 ( G ) The one to be cleansed shall then wash his clothes and shave off all his hair, and bathe in water and ( H ) be clean. And afterward he may enter the camp, but he ( I ) shall stay outside his tent for seven days. 9 Then it shall be on the seventh day that he shall shave off all his hair: he shall shave his head and his beard and his eyebrows, even all his hair. He shall then wash his clothes and bathe his [ f ] body in water and ( J ) be clean.

10 “Now on the eighth day he is to take two male lambs without defect, and a yearling ewe lamb without defect, and three-tenths of an [ g ] ephah of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering, and one [ h ] ( K ) log of oil; 11 and the priest who is going to pronounce him clean shall present the person to be cleansed and [ i ] the offerings before the Lord at the doorway of the tent of meeting. 12 Then the priest shall take the one male lamb and bring it as a ( L ) guilt offering, with the [ j ] ( M ) log of oil, and present them as a ( N ) wave offering before the Lord . 13 Next he shall slaughter the male lamb in ( O ) the place where they slaughter the [ k ] sin offering and the burnt offering, at the place of the sanctuary—for the guilt offering, ( P ) like the [ l ] sin offering, belongs to the priest; it is most holy. 14 The priest shall then take some of the blood of the ( Q ) guilt offering, and the priest shall put it on ( R ) the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. 15 The priest shall also take some of the [ m ] ( S ) log of oil, and pour it into his left palm; 16 the priest shall then dip his right-hand finger into the oil that is in his left palm, and with his finger sprinkle some of the oil seven times before the Lord . 17 Of the remaining oil which is in his palm, the priest shall ( T ) put some on the right ear lobe of the one to be cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot, on the blood of the guilt offering; 18 as for the rest of the oil that is in the priest’s palm, he shall put it on the head of the one to be cleansed. So the priest shall make ( U ) atonement on his behalf before the Lord . 19 The priest shall next offer the [ n ] ( V ) sin offering and make atonement for the one to be cleansed from his uncleanness. Then afterward, he shall slaughter the burnt offering. 20 The priest shall offer up the burnt offering and the grain offering on the altar. So the priest shall make atonement for him, and ( W ) he will be clean.

21 ( X ) But if he is poor and his [ o ] means are insufficient, then he is to take one male lamb for a ( Y ) guilt offering as a wave offering to make atonement for him, and a tenth of an [ p ] ephah of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering, and a [ q ] ( Z ) log of oil, 22 and two turtledoves or two young doves, which [ r ] are within his means. ( AA ) The one shall be a [ s ] ( AB ) sin offering, and the other a burnt offering. 23 ( AC ) Then on the eighth day he shall bring them for his cleansing to the priest, at the doorway of the tent of meeting, before the Lord . 24 The priest shall take the lamb of the guilt offering and ( AD ) the [ t ] log of oil, and the priest shall offer them as a wave offering before the Lord . 25 Next he shall slaughter the lamb of the guilt offering; and the priest is to take some of the blood of the guilt offering and put it on ( AE ) the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. 26 The priest shall also pour some of the oil into his left palm; 27 and with his right-hand finger the priest shall sprinkle some of the oil that is in his left palm seven times before the Lord . 28 The priest shall then put some of the oil that is in his palm on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot, on the place of the blood of the guilt offering. 29 Moreover, the rest of the oil that is in the priest’s palm, he shall put on the head of the one to be cleansed, to make atonement on his behalf before the Lord . 30 He shall then offer one of the turtledoves or young doves, [ u ] which are within his means. 31 He shall offer what [ v ] he can afford, ( AF ) the one as a [ w ] sin offering and the other as a burnt offering, together with the grain offering. So the priest shall make atonement before the Lord on behalf of the one to be cleansed. 32 This is the law for him in whom there is an infection of leprosy, whose [ x ] means are limited for his cleansing.”

Cleansing a Leprous House

33 The Lord further spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying:

34 ( AG ) When you enter the land of Canaan, which I am giving you as a possession, and I put a spot of leprosy on a house in the land of your possession, 35 then the one who owns the house shall come and tell the priest, saying, ‘ Something like ( AH ) a spot of leprosy has become visible to me in the house.’ 36 The priest shall then command that they empty the house before the priest goes in to look at the spot, so that everything in the house need not become unclean; and afterward the priest shall go in to look at the house. 37 So he shall look at the spot, and if the spot on the walls of the house has greenish or reddish depressions and appears deeper than the [ y ] surface, 38 the priest shall come out of the house, to the [ z ] doorway, and [ aa ] quarantine the house for seven days. 39 Then the priest shall return on the seventh day and [ ab ] make an inspection. If the spot has indeed spread on the walls of the house, 40 the priest shall order them to pull out the stones with the spot on them and throw them away [ ac ] at an unclean place outside the city. 41 And he shall have the house scraped all around [ ad ] inside, and they shall dump the plaster that they scrape off at an unclean place outside the city. 42 Then they shall take other stones and replace the discarded stones, and he shall take other plaster and replaster the house.

43 “If, however, the spot breaks out again in the house after he has pulled out the stones and scraped the house, and after it has been replastered, 44 then the priest shall come in and [ ae ] make an inspection. If he sees that the spot has indeed spread in the house, it is ( AI ) a malignant spot in the house; it is unclean. 45 The owner shall therefore tear down the house, its stones, its timbers, and all the plaster of the house, and he shall take them outside the city to an ( AJ ) unclean place. 46 Moreover, whoever goes into the house during the time that he has [ af ] quarantined it, becomes ( AK ) unclean until evening. 47 Likewise, whoever lies down in the house shall wash his clothes, and whoever eats in the house shall wash his clothes.

48 “If, on the other hand, the priest comes in and [ ag ] makes an inspection and the spot has not indeed spread in the house after the house has been replastered, then the priest shall pronounce the house clean because the spot has [ ah ] not reappeared. 49 To cleanse the house then, he shall take ( AL ) two birds, cedar wood, a [ ai ] scarlet string, and hyssop, 50 and he shall slaughter the one bird in an earthenware vessel over [ aj ] running water. 51 Then he shall take the cedar wood, the ( AM ) hyssop, and the [ ak ] scarlet string, with the live bird, and dip them in the blood of the slaughtered bird as well as in the [ al ] running water, and sprinkle the house seven times. 52 So he shall cleanse the house with the blood of the bird and with the [ am ] running water, along with the live bird, the cedar wood, the hyssop, and the [ an ] scarlet string. 53 However, he shall let the live bird go free outside the city into the open field. So he shall make atonement for the house, and it will be clean.”

54 This is the law for any spot of leprosy—even for a ( AN ) scale, 55 and for the ( AO ) leprous garment or house, 56 and ( AP ) for a swelling, for a scab, and for a bright spot— 57 to teach [ ao ] when they are unclean and [ ap ] when they are clean. This is the law of leprosy.

Cleansing From Defiling Skin Diseases

14 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “These are the regulations for any diseased person at the time of their ceremonial cleansing, when they are brought to the priest: ( A ) 3 The priest is to go outside the camp and examine them. ( B ) If they have been healed of their defiling skin disease, [ a ] ( C ) 4 the priest shall order that two live clean birds and some cedar wood, scarlet yarn and hyssop ( D ) be brought for the person to be cleansed. ( E ) 5 Then the priest shall order that one of the birds be killed over fresh water in a clay pot. ( F ) 6 He is then to take the live bird and dip it, together with the cedar wood, the scarlet yarn and the hyssop, into the blood of the bird that was killed over the fresh water. ( G ) 7 Seven times ( H ) he shall sprinkle ( I ) the one to be cleansed of the defiling disease, and then pronounce them clean. After that, he is to release the live bird in the open fields. ( J )

8 “The person to be cleansed must wash their clothes, ( K ) shave off all their hair and bathe with water; ( L ) then they will be ceremonially clean. ( M ) After this they may come into the camp, ( N ) but they must stay outside their tent for seven days. 9 On the seventh day ( O ) they must shave off all their hair; ( P ) they must shave their head, their beard, their eyebrows and the rest of their hair. They must wash their clothes and bathe themselves with water, and they will be clean. ( Q )

10 “On the eighth day ( R ) they must bring two male lambs and one ewe lamb ( S ) a year old, each without defect, along with three-tenths of an ephah [ b ] ( T ) of the finest flour mixed with olive oil for a grain offering, ( U ) and one log [ c ] of oil. ( V ) 11 The priest who pronounces them clean shall present ( W ) both the one to be cleansed and their offerings before the Lord at the entrance to the tent of meeting. ( X )

12 “Then the priest is to take one of the male lambs and offer it as a guilt offering, ( Y ) along with the log of oil; he shall wave them before the Lord as a wave offering. ( Z ) 13 He is to slaughter the lamb in the sanctuary area ( AA ) where the sin offering [ d ] and the burnt offering are slaughtered. Like the sin offering, the guilt offering belongs to the priest; ( AB ) it is most holy. 14 The priest is to take some of the blood of the guilt offering and put it on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot. ( AC ) 15 The priest shall then take some of the log of oil, pour it in the palm of his own left hand, ( AD ) 16 dip his right forefinger into the oil in his palm, and with his finger sprinkle some of it before the Lord seven times. ( AE ) 17 The priest is to put some of the oil remaining in his palm on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot, on top of the blood of the guilt offering. ( AF ) 18 The rest of the oil in his palm the priest shall put on the head of the one to be cleansed ( AG ) and make atonement for them before the Lord .

19 “Then the priest is to sacrifice the sin offering and make atonement for the one to be cleansed from their uncleanness. ( AH ) After that, the priest shall slaughter the burnt offering 20 and offer it on the altar, together with the grain offering, and make atonement for them, ( AI ) and they will be clean. ( AJ )

21 “If, however, they are poor ( AK ) and cannot afford these, ( AL ) they must take one male lamb as a guilt offering to be waved to make atonement for them, together with a tenth of an ephah [ e ] of the finest flour mixed with olive oil for a grain offering, a log of oil, 22 and two doves or two young pigeons, ( AM ) such as they can afford, one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. ( AN )

23 “On the eighth day they must bring them for their cleansing to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting, ( AO ) before the Lord . ( AP ) 24 The priest is to take the lamb for the guilt offering, ( AQ ) together with the log of oil, ( AR ) and wave them before the Lord as a wave offering. ( AS ) 25 He shall slaughter the lamb for the guilt offering and take some of its blood and put it on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot. ( AT ) 26 The priest is to pour some of the oil into the palm of his own left hand, ( AU ) 27 and with his right forefinger sprinkle some of the oil from his palm seven times before the Lord . 28 Some of the oil in his palm he is to put on the same places he put the blood of the guilt offering—on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot. 29 The rest of the oil in his palm the priest shall put on the head of the one to be cleansed, to make atonement for them before the Lord . ( AV ) 30 Then he shall sacrifice the doves or the young pigeons, such as the person can afford, ( AW ) 31 one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering, ( AX ) together with the grain offering. In this way the priest will make atonement before the Lord on behalf of the one to be cleansed. ( AY )

32 These are the regulations for anyone who has a defiling skin disease ( AZ ) and who cannot afford the regular offerings ( BA ) for their cleansing.

Cleansing From Defiling Molds

33 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 34 “When you enter the land of Canaan, ( BB ) which I am giving you as your possession, ( BC ) and I put a spreading mold in a house in that land, 35 the owner of the house must go and tell the priest, ‘I have seen something that looks like a defiling mold in my house.’ 36 The priest is to order the house to be emptied before he goes in to examine the mold, so that nothing in the house will be pronounced unclean. After this the priest is to go in and inspect the house. 37 He is to examine the mold on the walls, and if it has greenish or reddish ( BD ) depressions that appear to be deeper than the surface of the wall, 38 the priest shall go out the doorway of the house and close it up for seven days. ( BE ) 39 On the seventh day ( BF ) the priest shall return to inspect the house. If the mold has spread on the walls, 40 he is to order that the contaminated stones be torn out and thrown into an unclean place outside the town. ( BG ) 41 He must have all the inside walls of the house scraped and the material that is scraped off dumped into an unclean place outside the town. 42 Then they are to take other stones to replace these and take new clay and plaster the house.

43 “If the defiling mold reappears in the house after the stones have been torn out and the house scraped and plastered, 44 the priest is to go and examine it and, if the mold has spread in the house, it is a persistent defiling mold; the house is unclean. ( BH ) 45 It must be torn down—its stones, timbers and all the plaster—and taken out of the town to an unclean place.

46 “Anyone who goes into the house while it is closed up will be unclean till evening. ( BI ) 47 Anyone who sleeps or eats in the house must wash their clothes. ( BJ )

48 “But if the priest comes to examine it and the mold has not spread after the house has been plastered, he shall pronounce the house clean, ( BK ) because the defiling mold is gone. 49 To purify the house he is to take two birds and some cedar wood, scarlet yarn and hyssop. ( BL ) 50 He shall kill one of the birds over fresh water in a clay pot. ( BM ) 51 Then he is to take the cedar wood, the hyssop, ( BN ) the scarlet yarn and the live bird, dip them into the blood of the dead bird and the fresh water, and sprinkle the house seven times. ( BO ) 52 He shall purify the house with the bird’s blood, the fresh water, the live bird, the cedar wood, the hyssop and the scarlet yarn. 53 Then he is to release the live bird in the open fields ( BP ) outside the town. In this way he will make atonement for the house, and it will be clean. ( BQ )

54 These are the regulations for any defiling skin disease, ( BR ) for a sore, 55 for defiling molds ( BS ) in fabric or in a house, 56 and for a swelling, a rash or a shiny spot, ( BT ) 57 to determine when something is clean or unclean.

These are the regulations for defiling skin diseases and defiling molds. ( BU )
