Leviticus 12

What a woman must do when she has a baby

12 The Lord said to Moses, 2 ‘Say this to Israel's people. When a boy is born, his mother is not clean for seven days. When she is bleeding each month, the rule is the same. She is not clean. 3 Eight days after he is born, they must circumcise the boy. 4 The woman must wait for 35 days after the boy is born. All this time she must not touch anything that is holy. She must not go into the Tent of Meeting. After this time, she will become clean.

5 After a girl is born, her mother will not be clean for two weeks. The rule is the same as for each month, when she is bleeding. She will not be clean then. She must wait 66 days after a girl is born. Then she will become clean.

6 When the days to wait are finished, the woman must come to the door of the Tent of Meeting. She must bring to the priest a sheep that is one year old for a burnt offering. And she must bring a bird for a sin offering. The bird must be a pigeon or a dove. These are gifts to God. 7 The priest will offer the gifts to the Lord . Then the woman will become clean. These are the rules at the birth of a boy or of a girl.

8 If the woman does not have money to buy a sheep she can give two doves or pigeons. The priest will use one bird for a sin offering and he will burn the other one. That is how he will make atonement for her. Then she will be clean.’

Rules for New Mothers

12 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Tell the Israelites:

“When a woman gives birth, she will be unclean, just as she is during her monthly time of bleeding. If the baby is a boy, the mother will be unclean for seven days. 3 The baby boy must be circumcised on the eighth day. 4 Because of the blood from childbirth, another 33 days must pass before she can touch anything that is holy. She must not enter the Holy Place until the time of her purification [ a ] is finished. 5 But if she gives birth to a girl, the mother will be unclean for 14 days, just as she is during her monthly time of bleeding. Because of the blood from childbirth, another 66 days must pass before she becomes clean.

6 “After the time of her purification is finished, the new mother of a baby girl or boy must bring special sacrifices to the Meeting Tent. She must give her sacrifices to the priest at the entrance of the Meeting Tent. She must bring a one-year-old lamb for a burnt offering and a dove or young pigeon for a sin offering. 7-8 If the woman cannot afford a lamb, she may bring two doves or two young pigeons. One bird will be for a burnt offering and one for a sin offering. The priest will offer them before the Lord . In this way the priest will make her pure, and she will be clean from the blood of childbirth. These are the rules for a woman who gives birth to a baby boy or a baby girl.”

Footnotes

  1. Leviticus 12:4 purification Being made clean or acceptable to God for worship.

12 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean.

3 And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.

4 And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be fulfilled.

5 But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying threescore and six days.

6 And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest:

7 Who shall offer it before the Lord , and make an atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for her that hath born a male or a female.

8 And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.

Laws of Motherhood

12 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the sons of Israel, saying:

‘When a woman gives birth and delivers a male child , then she shall be unclean for seven days; ( A ) as she is in the days of her menstruation, she shall be unclean. 3 Then on ( B ) the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. 4 And she shall stay at home in her condition of [ a ] blood purification for thirty-three days; she shall not touch any consecrated thing, nor enter the sanctuary until the days of her purification are completed. 5 But if she gives birth to a female child , then she shall be unclean for two weeks, as in her menstruation; and she shall stay at home in her condition of [ b ] blood purification for sixty-six days.

6 ( C ) When the days of her purification are completed, for a son or for a daughter, she shall bring to the priest at the doorway of the tent of meeting a one-year-old lamb as a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a turtledove ( D ) as a [ c ] sin offering. 7 Then he shall offer it before the Lord and make atonement for her, and she shall be cleansed from the [ d ] flow of her blood. This is the law for her who gives birth to a child, whether a male or a female. 8 But if [ e ] she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take ( E ) two turtledoves or two young doves, ( F ) the one as a burnt offering and the other as a [ f ] sin offering; and the ( G ) priest shall make atonement for her, and she will be clean.’”

Purification After Childbirth

12 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Say to the Israelites: ‘A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is unclean during her monthly period. ( A ) 3 On the eighth day ( B ) the boy is to be circumcised. ( C ) 4 Then the woman must wait thirty-three days to be purified from her bleeding. She must not touch anything sacred or go to the sanctuary until the days of her purification are over. 5 If she gives birth to a daughter, for two weeks the woman will be unclean, as during her period. Then she must wait sixty-six days to be purified from her bleeding.

6 “‘When the days of her purification for a son or daughter are over, ( D ) she is to bring to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting a year-old lamb ( E ) for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a dove for a sin offering. [ a ] ( F ) 7 He shall offer them before the Lord to make atonement for her, and then she will be ceremonially clean from her flow of blood.

“‘These are the regulations for the woman who gives birth to a boy or a girl. 8 But if she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons, ( G ) one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. ( H ) In this way the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean. ( I ) ’”
