1 The city that was full of people is lonely now.
The city is like the wife of a dead husband.
Once she was great.
She was like a queen among the other places in the country.
Now she is a slave. [ a ]
2 She weeps in the night
and there are tears on her face.
Not one of her lovers comforts her.
All her friends have left her.
They have gone against her and they are now her enemies. [ b ]
3 The enemies have taken Judah's people away as slaves.
The slaves have only trouble and difficult work.
They now live among strangers.
They have no rest, and they live far away from home.
They cannot go away from those who do cruel things to them.
4 Zion's streets are sad places now. [ c ]
Nobody comes to worship God there any longer.
There is nothing to hear at the city gates. [ d ]
The priests are sad.
Strangers are cruel to the young women.
The people in Zion are very sad.
5 The people's enemies rule them now.
Those who hate them have plenty.
The Lord has caused trouble for the people
because they did so many wrong things. [ e ]
The enemies took the children away to work as slaves.
6 Zion is not beautiful any longer.
Her leaders are like animals without food.
They are too weak to run from their enemies.
7 Jerusalem's people are in trouble and they are away from their homes now.
So they remember the good things
that they had a long time ago.
When their enemies came, nobody was there with them.
Nobody helped them.
Their enemies laughed when they destroyed Jerusalem.
8 Jerusalem's people have sinned very much.
That is why this city is not clean any longer.
People thought that this city was the best.
Now they think that it is not important.
They see it as it is.
Jerusalem's people make sad noises and they want to hide themselves away.
9 Jerusalem seemed dirty because the people were so bad.
They never thought that the end would be like this.
But their enemies destroyed the city.
They do not have anyone who can comfort them.
God did not listen any longer when they asked for his help.
‘ Lord , see our troubles.
See how happy our enemies are,’ the people pray.
10 The enemies have taken away all Jerusalem's valuable things.
Foreign people have walked into God's holy house.
But God had said that people like that must not go in there.
They are not his people.
11 Jerusalem's people are making sad noises.
They are sad as they look for food.
They sell things that they love.
They use them to buy food.
That way, they can keep themselves alive. [ f ]
‘ Lord , see what is happening.
Think about me,
because nobody else does,’ the people pray.
12 ‘Come and really look at me!
All you people who pass me do not show any interest in me.
But you have never seen anything as sad as I am.
The Lord was very angry with me.
So it was the Lord who did this to me. [ g ]
13 It is like God has sent fire down into our bones to hurt us.
He wants us to turn towards him again,
so he has caused things to be very difficult for us.
All day he causes us to feel lonely and weak.
14 He has caused our sins to seem like something very heavy that lies on our necks.
It makes us weak.
He has let the enemy be very strong.
He let them win against us.
So we cannot beat them.
15 The Lord has let the enemy beat all our strong men.
He brought a big army to fight our young men, and the enemy won that fight.
The Lord God has punished us, like people walk on grapes to break them. [ h ]
He has let the enemy destroy the people of Judah.
16 We weep because of these things.
Tears run down our faces because God is not with us.
Nobody will help us.
We are the children of this city
and we have nothing now.
The enemy has won.’ [ i ]
17 Zion's people ask for help,
but nobody is their friend.
They are Jacob's children. [ j ]
But the Lord has said that he will cause their enemies
to come from every country near them.
Those other people think about Jerusalem as they would think about something dirty. [ k ]
18 ‘The Lord is right to punish us.
We have not obeyed him. [ l ]
Listen, all people everywhere, and look at us.
We are in very bad trouble.
The enemy has taken away our young women
and our young men to be slaves.’
19 ‘We shouted to our friends.
They had said that they would help us.
But they did not help us.
Our priests and our leaders died in the city.
They were looking for food to keep themselves alive.
20 Look, Lord , we are in a lot of trouble.
We are very sad.
We are weak deep inside ourselves
because we have done so many bad things.
They are killing our people in the streets.
People are dying in the houses.’ [ m ]
21 ‘Everybody knows that we are very sad.
Nobody wants to help us.
All our enemies know about our trouble.
They are happy, God, that you caused that trouble.
Please cause trouble for those enemies too, as you promised.
22 You know that they have done many bad things.
Punish them as you have punished us.
You punished us because we did many bad things.
Now we are ashamed and we are very sad.’
1 Jerusalem once was a city full of people,
but now the city is so empty.
She [ a ] was one of the greatest cities in the world,
but now she is like a poor widow.
She was once a princess among cities,
but now she has been made a slave.
2 She cries bitterly in the night.
Her tears are on her cheeks.
She has no one to comfort her.
Many nations were friendly to her,
but not one of them comforts her now.
All her friends have turned their backs on her
and have become her enemies.
3 Judah suffered very much,
and then she was taken into captivity.
She lives among other nations
but has found no rest.
The people who chased her caught her
where there was no way out. [ b ]
4 The roads to Zion are very sad,
because no one comes to Zion for the festivals anymore.
All of Zion’s gates have been destroyed;
all her priests groan in sorrow.
Zion’s young women have been taken away, [ c ]
and all this made Zion sad.
5 Jerusalem’s enemies have won.
Her enemies have been successful.
This happened because the Lord punished her.
He punished Jerusalem for her many sins.
Her children have gone away.
Their enemies captured them and took them away.
6 The beauty of Daughter Zion [ d ] has gone away.
Her princes were like deer that cannot find a meadow to feed in.
They walk away without strength from those who chased them.
7 Jerusalem thinks back.
She remembers the time when she was hurt
and when she lost her home.
She remembers all the nice things that she had in the past.
She remembers those nice things that she had in the old days.
She remembers when her people were captured by the enemy.
She remembers when there was no one to help her.
When her enemies saw her, they laughed,
because she was destroyed.
8 Jerusalem sinned very badly.
Because Jerusalem sinned,
she became a ruined city that people shake their heads about.
In the past people respected her.
But now they hate her,
because they abused her.
Jerusalem groaned
and turned away.
9 Jerusalem’s skirts were dirty.
She gave no thought to what would become of her.
Her fall was amazing.
She had no one to comfort her.
She says, “ Lord , see how I am hurt!
See how my enemy thinks he is so great!”
10 The enemy stretched out his hand.
He took all her nice things.
In fact, she saw the foreign nations go inside her Temple.
And you said those people could not join in our assembly!
11 All the people of Jerusalem are groaning.
All of her people are looking for food.
They are giving away all their nice things for food to stay alive.
Jerusalem says, “Look, Lord . Look at me!
See how people hate me.
12 All you who pass by on the road, you don’t seem to care.
But look at me and see.
Is there any pain like my pain?
Is there any pain like the pain that has come to me?
Is there any pain like the pain that the Lord has punished me with?
He has punished me on the day of his great anger.
13 The Lord sent fire from above
that went down into my bones.
He stretched out a net for my feet.
He turned me all the way around.
He made me into a wasteland.
I am sick all day.
14 “My sins were tied up like a yoke.
My sins were tied up in the Lord’s hands.
His yoke is on my neck.
He has made me weak.
He has given me to those
who I cannot stand up against.
15 “The Lord rejected all my powerful men
who were inside the city.
Then he brought a group of people against me.
He brought them to kill my young soldiers.
The Lord has trampled his dearest city [ e ]
like grapes in a winepress.
16 “I cry about all these things.
Tears are flowing down my cheeks.
There is no one near to comfort me.
There is no one who can make me feel better.
My children are like a wasteland,
because the enemy won.”
17 Zion spread out her hands.
There was no one to comfort her.
The Lord had given orders to Jacob’s enemies.
He ordered them to surround the city.
Jerusalem has become a dirty rag
that her enemies threw away.
18 Now Jerusalem says, “I refused to listen to the Lord ,
so he is right for doing these things.
So listen, all you people!
Look at my pain!
My young women and men
have gone into captivity.
19 I called out to my lovers,
but they tricked me.
My priests and my elders
have died in the city.
They were looking for food for themselves.
They wanted to keep themselves alive.
20 “Look at me, Lord . I am in distress!
I am upset, as if my heart turned upside down inside of me.
I feel this way because
I have been so stubborn.
Out in the streets,
I lost my children to the swords.
Inside, it is like death.
21 “Listen to me, I am groaning.
I have no one to comfort me.
All my enemies have heard of my trouble.
They are happy that you did this to me.
You said there would be a time of punishment.
You said you would punish my enemies.
Now do what you said.
Let my enemies be like I am now.
22 “Look how evil my enemies are!
Then you can treat them the same way you treated me
because of all my sins.
Do this because I am groaning again and again.
Do this because my heart is sick.”
1 How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people! how is she become as a widow! she that was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how is she become tributary!
2 She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks: among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her: all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they are become her enemies.
3 Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude: she dwelleth among the heathen, she findeth no rest: all her persecutors overtook her between the straits.
4 The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts: all her gates are desolate: her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness.
5 Her adversaries are the chief, her enemies prosper; for the Lord hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions: her children are gone into captivity before the enemy.
6 And from the daughter of Zion all her beauty is departed: her princes are become like harts that find no pasture, and they are gone without strength before the pursuer.
7 Jerusalem remembered in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her pleasant things that she had in the days of old, when her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and none did help her: the adversaries saw her, and did mock at her sabbaths.
8 Jerusalem hath grievously sinned; therefore she is removed: all that honoured her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness: yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward.
9 Her filthiness is in her skirts; she remembereth not her last end; therefore she came down wonderfully: she had no comforter. O Lord , behold my affliction: for the enemy hath magnified himself.
10 The adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her pleasant things: for she hath seen that the heathen entered into her sanctuary, whom thou didst command that they should not enter into thy congregation.
11 All her people sigh, they seek bread; they have given their pleasant things for meat to relieve the soul: see, O Lord , and consider; for I am become vile.
12 Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the Lord hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.
13 From above hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them: he hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back: he hath made me desolate and faint all the day.
14 The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand: they are wreathed, and come up upon my neck: he hath made my strength to fall, the Lord hath delivered me into their hands, from whom I am not able to rise up.
15 The Lord hath trodden under foot all my mighty men in the midst of me: he hath called an assembly against me to crush my young men: the Lord hath trodden the virgin, the daughter of Judah, as in a winepress.
16 For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed.
17 Zion spreadeth forth her hands, and there is none to comfort her: the Lord hath commanded concerning Jacob, that his adversaries should be round about him: Jerusalem is as a menstruous woman among them.
18 The Lord is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment: hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my sorrow: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.
19 I called for my lovers, but they deceived me: my priests and mine elders gave up the ghost in the city, while they sought their meat to relieve their souls.
20 Behold, O Lord ; for I am in distress: my bowels are troubled; mine heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled: abroad the sword bereaveth, at home there is as death.
21 They have heard that I sigh: there is none to comfort me: all mine enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad that thou hast done it: thou wilt bring the day that thou hast called, and they shall be like unto me.
22 Let all their wickedness come before thee; and do unto them, as thou hast done unto me for all my transgressions: for my sighs are many, and my heart is faint.

That once had ( B ) many people!
She has become like a ( C ) widow
Who was once ( D ) great among the nations!
She who was a princess among the [ a ] provinces
Has become a ( E ) forced laborer!
2 She ( F ) weeps bitterly in the night,
And her tears are on her cheeks;
She has no one to comfort her
Among all her ( G ) lovers.
All her friends have ( H ) dealt treacherously with her;
They have become her enemies.
3 ( I ) Judah has gone into exile out of affliction
And [ b ] harsh servitude;
She lives ( J ) among the nations,
But she has not found a resting place;
All those who ( K ) pursued her have overtaken her
In the midst of [ c ] distress.
4 The roads [ d ] of Zion are in mourning
Because ( L ) no one comes to an appointed feast.
All her gates are ( M ) deserted;
Her priests groan,
Her ( N ) virgins are worried,
And as for Zion herself, it is ( O ) bitter for her.
5 Her adversaries have become [ e ] her masters,
Her enemies are [ f ] secure;
For the Lord has [ g ] ( P ) caused her grief
Because of the multitude of her wrongdoings;
Her little ones have gone away
As captives [ h ] led by the enemy.
6 All of her ( Q ) splendor
Is gone from the daughter of Zion;
Her leaders have become like deer
That have found no pasture,
And they have [ i ] ( R ) fled without strength
[ j ] From the pursuer.
7 In the days of her affliction and homelessness
( S ) Jerusalem remembers all her treasures
That were hers since the days of old,
When her people fell into the hand of the adversary
And ( T ) no one helped her.
The adversaries saw her,
They ( U ) laughed at her [ k ] ruin.
8 Jerusalem sinned ( V ) greatly,
Therefore ( W ) she has become an [ l ] object of ridicule.
All who honored her despise her
Because they have seen her nakedness;
Even ( X ) she herself groans and turns away.
9 Her ( Y ) uncleanness was in her garment’s seams;
She [ m ] did not think of her ( Z ) future.
So she has [ n ] ( AA ) fallen in an astonishing way;
( AB ) She has no comforter.
“ ( AC ) See, Lord , my affliction,
For the enemy has [ o ] ( AD ) honored himself!”
10 The adversary has stretched out his hand
Over all her precious things,
For she has seen the ( AE ) nations enter her sanctuary,
The ones whom You commanded
That they were ( AF ) not to enter Your congregation.
11 All her people groan, ( AG ) seeking bread;
They have given their treasures for food
To ( AH ) restore their [ p ] lives.
“See, Lord , and look,
For I am ( AI ) despised.”
12 “ Is it ( AJ ) nothing to all you who pass this way?
Look and see if there is any pain like my pain
Which was inflicted on me,
With which the ( AK ) Lord tormented me on the day of His ( AL ) fierce anger.
13 From [ q ] the height He sent fire into my ( AM ) bones,
And it dominated them .
He has spread a ( AN ) net for my feet;
He has turned me back;
He has made me ( AO ) desolate,
[ r ] Faint all day long.
14 The ( AP ) yoke of my wrongdoings is bound;
By His hand they are woven together.
They have ( AQ ) come upon my neck;
He has made my strength [ s ] fail.
The Lord ( AR ) has handed me over
To those against whom I am not able to stand.
15 The ( AS ) Lord has thrown away all my strong men
In my midst;
He has called an appointed [ t ] time against me
To crush my ( AT ) young men;
The Lord has ( AU ) trodden as in a wine press
The virgin daughter of Judah.
16 For these things I ( AV ) weep;
[ u ] My eyes run down with water;
Because far from me is a ( AW ) comforter,
One to restore my soul.
My children are desolate
Because the enemy has prevailed.”
17 Zion ( AX ) stretches out with her hands;
There is no one to comfort her;
The Lord has ( AY ) commanded regarding Jacob
That those around him become his adversaries;
( AZ ) Jerusalem has become a filthy thing among them.
18 “The Lord is ( BA ) righteous,
For I have ( BB ) rebelled against His [ v ] command;
Hear now, all peoples,
And ( BC ) see my pain;
( BD ) My virgins and my young men
Have gone into captivity.
19 I ( BE ) called to my lovers, but they deserted me;
My ( BF ) priests and my elders perished in the city
While they sought food to ( BG ) restore their [ w ] strength themselves.
20 See, Lord , for I am in distress;
My [ x ] ( BH ) spirit is greatly troubled;
My heart is overturned within me,
For I have been very ( BI ) rebellious.
In the street the sword has made women childless;
In the house it is like death.
21 They have heard that I ( BJ ) groan;
There is no one to comfort me,
All my enemies have heard of my disaster;
They are ( BK ) joyful that You have done it .
Oh, that You would bring the day which You have proclaimed,
So that they will become ( BL ) like me.
22 May all their wickedness come before You;
And ( BM ) deal with them just as You have dealt with me
For all my wrongdoings.
For my groans are many and my heart is faint.”
1 [ a ] How deserted ( A ) lies the city,
once so full of people! ( B )

in the midst of her distress.

for no one comes to her appointed festivals.
All her gateways are desolate, ( N )
her priests groan,
her young women grieve,
and she is in bitter anguish. ( O )
5 Her foes have become her masters;
her enemies are at ease.
The Lord has brought her grief ( P )
because of her many sins. ( Q )
Her children have gone into exile, ( R )
captive before the foe. ( S )
6 All the splendor has departed
from Daughter Zion. ( T )
Her princes are like deer
that find no pasture;
in weakness they have fled ( U )
before the pursuer.
7 In the days of her affliction and wandering
Jerusalem remembers all the treasures
that were hers in days of old.
When her people fell into enemy hands,
there was no one to help her. ( V )
Her enemies looked at her
and laughed ( W ) at her destruction.
8 Jerusalem has sinned ( X ) greatly
and so has become unclean. ( Y )
All who honored her despise her,
for they have all seen her naked; ( Z )
she herself groans ( AA )
and turns away.
9 Her filthiness clung to her skirts;
she did not consider her future. ( AB )
Her fall ( AC ) was astounding;
there was none to comfort ( AD ) her.
“Look, Lord , on my affliction, ( AE )
for the enemy has triumphed.”
10 The enemy laid hands
on all her treasures; ( AF )
she saw pagan nations
enter her sanctuary ( AG ) —
those you had forbidden ( AH )
to enter your assembly.
11 All her people groan ( AI )
as they search for bread; ( AJ )
they barter their treasures for food
to keep themselves alive.
“Look, Lord , and consider,
for I am despised.”
12 “Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? ( AK )
Look around and see.
Is any suffering like my suffering ( AL )
that was inflicted on me,
that the Lord brought on me
in the day of his fierce anger? ( AM )
13 “From on high he sent fire,
sent it down into my bones. ( AN )
He spread a net ( AO ) for my feet
and turned me back.
He made me desolate, ( AP )
faint ( AQ ) all the day long.
14 “My sins have been bound into a yoke [ b ] ; ( AR )
by his hands they were woven together.
They have been hung on my neck,
and the Lord has sapped my strength.
He has given me into the hands ( AS )
of those I cannot withstand.
15 “The Lord has rejected
all the warriors in my midst; ( AT )
he has summoned an army ( AU ) against me
to [ c ] crush my young men. ( AV )
In his winepress ( AW ) the Lord has trampled ( AX )
Virgin Daughter ( AY ) Judah.
16 “This is why I weep
and my eyes overflow with tears. ( AZ )
No one is near to comfort ( BA ) me,
no one to restore my spirit.
My children are destitute
because the enemy has prevailed.” ( BB )
17 Zion stretches out her hands, ( BC )
but there is no one to comfort her.
The Lord has decreed for Jacob
that his neighbors become his foes; ( BD )
Jerusalem has become
an unclean ( BE ) thing ( BF ) among them.
18 “The Lord is righteous, ( BG )
yet I rebelled ( BH ) against his command.
Listen, all you peoples;
look on my suffering. ( BI )
My young men and young women
have gone into exile. ( BJ )
19 “I called to my allies ( BK )
but they betrayed me.
My priests and my elders
perished ( BL ) in the city
while they searched for food
to keep themselves alive.
20 “See, Lord , how distressed ( BM ) I am!
I am in torment ( BN ) within,
and in my heart I am disturbed, ( BO )
for I have been most rebellious. ( BP )
Outside, the sword bereaves;
inside, there is only death. ( BQ )
