Judges 5

5 Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day, saying,

² Praise ye the Lord for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves.

³ Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, even I, will sing unto the Lord ; I will sing praise to the Lord God of Israel.

⁴ Lord , when thou wentest out of Seir, when thou marchedst out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, and the heavens dropped, the clouds also dropped water.

⁵ The mountains melted from before the Lord , even that Sinai from before the Lord God of Israel.

⁶ In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied, and the travellers walked through byways.

⁷ The inhabitants of the villages ceased, they ceased in Israel, until that I Deborah arose, that I arose a mother in Israel.

⁸ They chose new gods; then was war in the gates: was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel?

⁹ My heart is toward the governors of Israel, that offered themselves willingly among the people. Bless ye the Lord .

¹⁰ Speak, ye that ride on white asses, ye that sit in judgment, and walk by the way.

¹¹ They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, there shall they rehearse the righteous acts of the Lord , even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel: then shall the people of the Lord go down to the gates.

¹² Awake, awake, Deborah: awake, awake, utter a song: arise, Barak, and lead thy captivity captive, thou son of Abinoam.

¹³ Then he made him that remaineth have dominion over the nobles among the people: the Lord made me have dominion over the mighty.

¹⁴ Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer.

¹⁵ And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; even Issachar, and also Barak: he was sent on foot into the valley. For the divisions of Reuben there were great thoughts of heart.

¹⁶ Why abodest thou among the sheepfolds, to hear the bleatings of the flocks? For the divisions of Reuben there were great searchings of heart.

¹⁷ Gilead abode beyond Jordan: and why did Dan remain in ships? Asher continued on the sea shore, and abode in his breaches.

¹⁸ Zebulun and Naphtali were a people that jeoparded their lives unto the death in the high places of the field.

¹⁹ The kings came and fought, then fought the kings of Canaan in Taanach by the waters of Megiddo; they took no gain of money.

²⁰ They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera.

²¹ The river of Kishon swept them away, that ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, thou hast trodden down strength.

²² Then were the horsehoofs broken by the means of the pransings, the pransings of their mighty ones.

²³ Curse ye Meroz, said the angel of the Lord , curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof; because they came not to the help of the Lord , to the help of the Lord against the mighty.

²⁴ Blessed above women shall Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite be, blessed shall she be above women in the tent.

²⁵ He asked water, and she gave him milk; she brought forth butter in a lordly dish.

²⁶ She put her hand to the nail, and her right hand to the workmen's hammer; and with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote off his head, when she had pierced and stricken through his temples.

²⁷ At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay down: at her feet he bowed, he fell: where he bowed, there he fell down dead.

²⁸ The mother of Sisera looked out at a window, and cried through the lattice, Why is his chariot so long in coming? why tarry the wheels of his chariots?

²⁹ Her wise ladies answered her, yea, she returned answer to herself,

³⁰ Have they not sped? have they not divided the prey; to every man a damsel or two; to Sisera a prey of divers colours, a prey of divers colours of needlework, of divers colours of needlework on both sides, meet for the necks of them that take the spoil?

³¹ So let all thine enemies perish, O Lord : but let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.

The Song of Deborah

5 ^{[ a ]} On the day that the Israelites defeated Sisera, Deborah and Barak son of Abinoam sang this song:

² “The men of Israel prepared for battle. ^{[ b ]}
They volunteered to go to war.
Praise the Lord !

³ “Listen, kings.
Pay attention, rulers.
I will sing.
I myself will sing to the Lord .
I will make music to the Lord ,
to the God of the Israelites.

⁴ “ Lord , in the past you came from Seir. ^{[ c ]}
You marched from the land of Edom.
You marched and the earth shook.
The skies rained.
The clouds dropped water.
⁵ The mountains shook before the Lord , the God of Mount Sinai,
before the Lord , the God of Israel!

⁶ “In the days of Shamgar son of Anath, ^{[ d ]}
and in the days of Jael, the main roads were empty.
Caravans and travelers traveled on the back roads.

⁷ “There were no soldiers in Israel
until you came, Deborah,
until you came to be a mother to Israel. ^{[ e ]}

⁸ “God chose new leaders
to fight at the city gates. ^{[ f ]}
No one could find a shield or a spear
among the 40,000 soldiers of Israel.

⁹ “My heart is with the commanders of Israel.
They volunteered to go to war.
Praise the Lord !

¹⁰ “Pay attention you people riding on white donkeys,
sitting on saddle blankets, ^{[ g ]}
and walking along the road.
¹¹ At the watering holes for the animals,
we hear the music of cymbals.
People sing about the victories of the Lord ,
the victories of his soldiers in Israel
when the Lord ’s people
fought at the city gates and won!

¹² “Wake up, wake up, Deborah!
Wake up, wake up, sing the song!
Get up, Barak!
Go capture your enemies, son of Abinoam!

¹³ “Now, survivors, go to the leaders.
People of the Lord , come with me and the soldiers.

¹⁴ “The men of Ephraim came from the hill country of Amalek. ^{[ h ]}
Benjamin, those men followed you and your people.
And there were commanders from the family of Makir. ^{[ i ]}
Leaders from the tribe of Zebulun came with their bronze clubs.
¹⁵ The leaders of Issachar were with Deborah.
The family of Issachar was true to Barak.
Those men marched to the valley on foot.

“Reuben, there are many brave soldiers in your army groups.
¹⁶ So why did you sit there against the walls of your sheep pens? ^{[ j ]}
The brave soldiers of Reuben thought hard about war.
But they stayed home listening to the music they played for their sheep.
¹⁷ The people of Gilead ^{[ k ]} stayed in their camps on the other side of the Jordan River.
As for you, people of Dan, why did you stay by your ships?
The people of Asher remained by the sea,
camped near their safe harbors.

¹⁸ “But the men of Zebulun and Naphtali risked their lives
fighting on those hills.
¹⁹ The kings of Canaan came to fight,
but they didn’t carry any treasures home.
They fought at the city of Taanach,
by the waters of Megiddo.
²⁰ The stars fought them from heaven.
From their paths across the sky, they fought against Sisera.
²¹ The Kishon River, that ancient river,
swept Sisera’s men away.
My soul, march on with strength! ^{[ l ]}
²² The horses’ hooves hammered the ground.
Sisera’s mighty horses ran and ran.

²³ “The angel of the Lord said, ‘Curse the city of Meroz.
Curse its people!
They did not come to help the Lord fight.’
They did not help the Lord against his powerful enemies.
²⁴ Jael was the wife of Heber the Kenite.
She will be blessed above all women.
²⁵ Sisera asked for water.
Jael gave him milk.
In a bowl fit for a ruler,
she brought him cream.
²⁶ Then Jael reached out and took a tent peg.
Her right hand reached for a workman’s hammer.
She put the peg against the side of Sisera’s head
and hit it with the hammer.
²⁷ He sank down between Jael’s feet.
He fell, and there he lay.
He sank down between her feet.
He fell there.
Where Sisera sank, he fell,
and there he lay, dead!

²⁸ “There is Sisera’s mother, looking out the window,
looking through the curtains and crying.
‘Why is Sisera’s chariot so late?
Why can’t I hear his wagons?’

²⁹ “Her wisest servant girl answers her.
Yes, the servant gives her an answer:
³⁰ ‘I’m sure they won the war,
and they are now taking things from the people they defeated.
They are dividing those things among themselves.
Each soldier is taking a girl or two.
Maybe Sisera found a piece of dyed cloth.
That’s it! Sisera found a piece of fancy cloth,
or maybe two, to wear around his neck in victory.’

³¹ “May all your enemies die like this, Lord !
But may all those who love you be as strong as the rising sun!”

And there was peace in the land for 40 years.

I, even I, will sing unto Jehovah;
I will sing praise to Jehovah, the God of Israel.
⁴ Jehovah, when thou wentest forth out of Seir,
When thou marchedst out of the field of Edom,
The earth trembled, the heavens also dropped,
Yea, the clouds dropped water.
⁵ The mountains ^{[ a ]} quaked at the presence of Jehovah,
Even yon Sinai at the presence of Jehovah, the God of Israel.

And abode by his creeks.
¹⁸ Zebulun was a people that jeoparded their lives unto the death,

²³ ‘Curse Meroz,’ said Yahweh’s angel.

²⁴ “Jael shall be blessed above women,
the wife of Heber the Kenite;
blessed shall she be above women in the tent.

5 And Deborah singeth -- also Barak son of Abinoam -- on that day, saying: --

² `For freeing freemen in Israel, For a people willingly offering themselves Bless ye Jehovah.

³ Hear, ye kings; give ear, ye princes, I, to Jehovah, I -- I do sing, I sing praise to Jehovah, God of Israel.

⁴ Jehovah, in Thy going forth out of Seir, In Thy stepping out of the field of Edom, Earth trembled, also the heavens dropped, Also thick clouds dropped water.

⁵ Hills flowed from the face of Jehovah, This one -- Sinai -- From the face of Jehovah, God of Israel.

⁶ In the days of Shamgar son of Anath -- In the days of Jael -- The ways have ceased, And those going in the paths go [in] crooked ways.

⁷ Villages ceased in Israel -- they ceased, Till that I arose -- Deborah, That I arose, a mother in Israel.

⁸ He chooseth new gods, Then war [is] at the gates! A shield is not seen -- and a spear Among forty thousand in Israel.

⁹ My heart [is] to the lawgivers of Israel, Who are offering themselves willingly among the people, Bless ye Jehovah!

¹⁰ Riders on white asses -- Sitters on a long robe -- And walkers by the way -- meditate!

¹¹ By the voice of shouters Between the places of drawing water, There they give out righteous acts of Jehovah, Righteous acts of His villages in Israel, Then ruled in the gates have the people of Jehovah.

¹² Awake, awake, Deborah; Awake, awake, utter a song; Rise, Barak, and take captive thy captivity, Son of Abinoam.

¹³ Then him who is left of the honourable ones He caused to rule the people of Jehovah, He caused me to rule among the mighty.

¹⁴ Out of Ephraim their root [is] against Amalek. After thee, Benjamin, among thy peoples. Out of Machir came down lawgivers, And out of Zebulun those drawing with the reed of a writer.

¹⁵ And princes in Issachar [are] with Deborah, Yea, Issachar [is] right with Barak, Into the valley he was sent on his feet. In the divisions of Reuben, Great [are] the decrees of heart!

¹⁶ Why hast thou abode between the boundaries, To hear lowings of herds? For the divisions of Reuben, Great [are] the searchings of heart!

¹⁷ Gilead beyond the Jordan did tabernacle, And Dan -- why doth he sojourn [in] ships? Asher hath abode at the haven of the seas, And by his creeks doth tabernacle.

¹⁸ Zebulun [is] a people who exposed its soul to death, Naphtali also -- on high places of the field.

¹⁹ Kings came -- they fought; Then fought kings of Canaan, In Taanach, by the waters of Megiddo; Gain of money they took not!

²⁰ From the heavens they fought: The stars from their highways fought with Sisera.

²¹ The brook Kishon swept them away, The brook most ancient -- the brook Kishon. Thou dost tread down strength, O my soul!

²² Then broken were the horse-heels, By pransings -- pransings of its mighty ones.

²³ Curse Meroz -- said a messenger of Jehovah, Cursing, curse ye its inhabitants, For they came not to the help of Jehovah, To the help of Jehovah among the mighty!

²⁴ Blessed above women is Jael, Wife of Heber the Kenite, Above women in the tent she is blessed.

²⁵ Water he asked -- milk she gave; In a lordly dish she brought near butter.

²⁶ Her hand to the pin she sendeth forth, And her right hand to the labourers' hammer, And she hammered Sisera -- she smote his head, Yea, she smote, and it passed through his temple.

²⁷ Between her feet he bowed -- He fell, he lay down; Between her feet he bowed, he fell; Where he bowed, there he fell -- destroyed.

²⁸ Through the window she hath looked out -- Yea, she crieth out -- the mother of Sisera, Through the lattice: Wherefore is his chariot delaying to come? Wherefore tarried have the steps of his chariot?

²⁹ The wise ones, her princesses, answer her, Yea, she returneth her sayings to herself:

³⁰ Do they not find? -- they apportion spoil, A female -- two females -- for every head, Spoil of finger-work for Sisera, Spoil of embroidered finger-work, Finger-work -- a pair of embroidered things, For the necks of the spoil!

³¹ So do all Thine enemies perish, O Jehovah, And those loving Him [are] As the going out of the sun in its might!' and the land resteth forty years.

5 In that day Debbora and Barac son of Abinoem sung, and said:

² O you of Israel, that have willingly offered your lives to danger, bless the Lord.

³ Hear, O ye kings, give ear, ye princes: It is I, it is I, that will sing to the Lord, I will sing to the Lord the God of Israel.

⁴ O Lord, when thou wentest out of Seir, and passedst by the regions of Edom, the earth trembled, and the heavens dropped water.

⁵ The mountains melted before the face of the Lord, and Sinai before the face of the Lord the God of Israel.

⁶ In the days of Samgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jahel the paths rested: and they that went by them, walked through by-ways.

⁷ The valiant men ceased, and rested in Israel: until Debbora arose, a mother arose in Israel.

⁸ The Lord chose new wars, and he himself overthrew the gates of the enemies: a shield and spear was not seen among forty thousand of Israel.

⁹ My heart loveth the princes of Israel: O you that of your own good will offered yourselves to danger, bless the Lord.

¹⁰ Speak, you that ride upon fair asses, and you that sit in judgment, and walk in the way.

¹¹ Where the chariots were dashed together, and the army of the enemies was choked, there let the justices of the Lord be rehearsed, and his clemency towards the brave men of Israel: then the people of the Lord went down to the gates, and obtained the sovereignty.

²² The hoofs of the horses were broken whilst the stoutest of the enemies fled amain, and fell headlong down.

²³ Curse ye the land of Meroz, said the angel of the Lord: curse the inhabitants thereof, because they came not to the help of the Lord, to help his most valiant men.

²⁴ Blessed among women be Jahel the wife of Haber the Cinite, and blessed be she in her tent.

²⁵ He asked her water and she gave him milk, and offered him butter in a dish fit for princes.

²⁶ She put her left hand to the nail, and her right hand to the workman's hammer, and she struck Sisara, seeking in his head a place for the wound, and strongly piercing through his temples.

²⁷ At her feet he fell: he fainted, and he died: he rolled before her feet, and he lay lifeless and wretched.

²⁸ His mother looked out at a window, and howled: and she spoke from the dining room: Why is his chariot so long in coming back? Why are the feet of his horses so slow?

²⁹ One that was wiser than the rest of his wives, returned this answer to her mother in law:

³⁰ Perhaps he is now dividing the spoils, and the fairest of the women is chosen out for him: garments of divers colours are given to Sisara for his prey, and furniture of different kinds is heaped together to adorn the necks.

³¹ So let all thy enemies perish, O Lord: but let them that love thee shine, as the sun shineth in his rising.

³² And the land rested for forty years.
