10 After Abimelech's death, another man became Israel's leader, to rescue them. He was Tola, the son of Puah and grandson of Dodo. He belonged to Issachar's tribe. He lived in Shamir, in the hill country of Ephraim.
2 Tola led Israel for 23 years. Then he died and they buried him in Shamir.
3 After Tola, Jair of Gilead became Israel's leader. He led Israel for 22 years. 4 He had 30 sons. They rode on 30 donkeys and they ruled 30 towns in Gilead. These towns are still called Havvoth-Jair (Jair's villages). 5 Then Jair died and they buried him in Kamon.
6 The Israelites again did things that the Lord saw were evil. They worshipped idols of Baal and Ashtoreth. They also worshipped the gods of Syria, Sidon and Moab, as well as the gods of the Ammonites and the Philistines. [ a ] They turned away from the Lord and they did not serve him any more.
7 The Lord became angry with the Israelites. He put them under the power of the Ammonites and the Philistines. 8 That year they attacked the Israelites who lived in the Gilead region, on the east side of the Jordan River. That was the land where the Amorites lived. They were cruel to the Israelites for 18 years. 9 Then the Ammonites went across the Jordan River to fight against the tribes of Judah, Benjamin and Ephraim. The Israelites were in a lot of trouble.
10 Then the Israelites called out to the Lord for help. They said, ‘We have turned against you. We have worshipped the idols of Baal instead of you.’
11-12 The Lord replied, ‘I have saved you many times when you called to me for help. I saved you from the power of the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines, the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Midianites. [ b ] 13 But now you have turned away from me and you worship other gods instead. So I will not rescue you again. 14 Go and ask those other gods to help you! They are the gods that you have chosen, so let them rescue you from your trouble!’
15 But the Israelites said to the Lord , ‘We are guilty. Punish us in whatever way you think is right, but please rescue us now.’ 16 Then they threw away all the idols of foreign gods that they had been worshipping. They began to worship the Lord again. Finally, the Lord decided to help them, because he saw how upset they were.
17 The Ammonite army came to Gilead and they made their camp there. The Israelite army also came and they made their camp in Mizpah. 18 The leaders of the people of Gilead asked each other, ‘Who will lead us to attack the Ammonites? Any man who agrees to do that will become the leader of everyone who lives in Gilead.’
10 After Abimelech died, God sent another judge to save the Israelites. His name was Tola. He was the son of Puah, who was the son of Dodo. Tola was from the tribe of Issachar and lived in the city of Shamir, in the hill country of Ephraim. 2 Tola was a judge for the Israelites for 23 years. Then he died and was buried in the city of Shamir.
3 After Tola died, God sent another judge. His name was Jair, and he lived in the area of Gilead. He was a judge for the Israelites for 22 years. 4 Jair had 30 sons who rode 30 donkeys. [ a ] These 30 sons controlled 30 towns in the area of Gilead. These towns are called the Towns of Jair to this very day. 5 Jair died and was buried in the city of Kamon.
6 Again the Israelites did what the Lord said was wrong. They began worshiping the false gods Baal and the Ashtoreth. They also worshiped the gods of the people of Aram, the gods of the people of Sidon, the gods of the Moabites, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines. The Israelites left the Lord and stopped serving him.
7 So the Lord became angry with the Israelites and allowed the Philistines and the Ammonites to defeat them. 8 In that same year those people destroyed the Israelites who lived on the east side of the Jordan River, in the area of Gilead. That is the land where the Amorites had lived. The Israelites suffered for 18 years. 9 The Ammonites then went across the Jordan River to fight against the people of Judah, Benjamin, and Ephraim. The Ammonites brought many troubles to the Israelites.
10 So the Israelites cried to the Lord for help. They said, “God, we have sinned against you. We left our God and worshiped the false god Baal.”
11 The Lord answered the Israelites, “You cried to me when the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, and the Philistines hurt you. I saved you from these people. 12 You cried to me when the people of Sidon, the Amalekites, and the Midianites [ b ] hurt you. I also saved you from those people. 13 But you left me and started worshiping other gods, so I refuse to save you again. 14 You like worshiping those gods, so go call to them for help. Let them save you when you are in trouble.”
15 But the Israelites said to the Lord , “We have sinned. Do whatever you want to do to us, but please save us today.” 16 Then the Israelites threw away the foreign gods and began to worship the Lord again. So he felt sorry for them when he saw them suffering.
17 The Ammonites gathered together for war. Their camp was in the area of Gilead. The Israelites gathered together. Their camp was at the city of Mizpah. 18 The leaders of the people living in the area of Gilead said, “Whoever leads us in the attack against the Ammonites will become the head of all the people living in Gilead.”
10 And after Abimelech there arose to defend Israel Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar; and he dwelt in Shamir in mount Ephraim.
2 And he judged Israel twenty and three years, and died, and was buried in Shamir.
3 And after him arose Jair, a Gileadite, and judged Israel twenty and two years.
4 And he had thirty sons that rode on thirty ass colts, and they had thirty cities, which are called Havothjair unto this day, which are in the land of Gilead.
5 And Jair died, and was buried in Camon.
6 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the Lord , and served Baalim, and Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Zidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines, and forsook the Lord , and served not him.
7 And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of the children of Ammon.
8 And that year they vexed and oppressed the children of Israel: eighteen years, all the children of Israel that were on the other side Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead.
9 Moreover the children of Ammon passed over Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was sore distressed.
10 And the children of Israel cried unto the Lord , saying, We have sinned against thee, both because we have forsaken our God, and also served Baalim.
11 And the Lord said unto the children of Israel, Did not I deliver you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines?
12 The Zidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and ye cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand.
13 Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.
14 Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation.
15 And the children of Israel said unto the Lord , We have sinned: do thou unto us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee; deliver us only, we pray thee, this day.
16 And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the Lord : and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.
17 Then the children of Ammon were gathered together, and encamped in Gilead. And the children of Israel assembled themselves together, and encamped in Mizpeh.
18 And the people and princes of Gilead said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.
10 Now after Abimelech died , Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, ( A ) rose up to save Israel; and he lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim. 2 He judged Israel for twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried in Shamir.
3 After him, Jair the Gileadite rose up and judged Israel for twenty-two years. 4 And he had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty cities [ a ] in the land of Gilead ( B ) that are called [ b ] Havvoth-jair to this day. 5 And Jair died and was buried in Kamon.
6 Then the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord , and ( C ) they served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, ( D ) the gods of the sons of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; so ( E ) they abandoned the Lord and did not serve Him. 7 And the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He ( F ) sold them into the hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of the sons of Ammon. 8 And they [ c ] afflicted and oppressed the sons of Israel [ d ] that year; for eighteen years they oppressed all the sons of Israel who were beyond the Jordan, [ e ] in Gilead in the land of the Amorites. 9 And the sons of Ammon crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was in great difficulty.
10 Then the ( G ) sons of Israel cried out to the Lord , saying, “We have sinned against You, for indeed, we have abandoned our God and served the Baals.” 11 And the Lord said to the sons of Israel, “ Did I not save you ( H ) from the Egyptians, ( I ) the Amorites, ( J ) the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines? 12 And when the Sidonians, the Amalekites, and the Maonites ( K ) oppressed you, you cried out to Me, and I saved you from their hands. 13 Yet ( L ) you abandoned Me and served other gods; therefore I will no longer save you. 14 ( M ) Go and cry out to the gods which you have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress.” 15 Then the sons of Israel said to the Lord , “We have sinned, ( N ) do to us whatever [ f ] seems good to You; only please save us this day.” 16 ( O ) So they removed the foreign gods from among them and served the Lord ; and [ g ] ( P ) He could no longer endure the misery of Israel.
17 Then the sons of Ammon were summoned, and they camped in Gilead. And the sons of Israel gathered together and camped in ( Q ) Mizpah. 18 And the people, the leaders of Gilead, said to one another, “Who is the man who will begin to fight against the sons of Ammon? He shall become head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”
10 After the time of Abimelek, ( A ) a man of Issachar ( B ) named Tola son of Puah, ( C ) the son of Dodo, rose to save ( D ) Israel. He lived in Shamir, ( E ) in the hill country of Ephraim. 2 He led [ a ] Israel twenty-three years; then he died, and was buried in Shamir.
3 He was followed by Jair ( F ) of Gilead, who led Israel twenty-two years. 4 He had thirty sons, who rode thirty donkeys. ( G ) They controlled thirty towns in Gilead, which to this day are called Havvoth Jair. [ b ] ( H ) 5 When Jair ( I ) died, he was buried in Kamon.
6 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord . ( J ) They served the Baals and the Ashtoreths, ( K ) and the gods of Aram, ( L ) the gods of Sidon, ( M ) the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites ( N ) and the gods of the Philistines. ( O ) And because the Israelites forsook the Lord ( P ) and no longer served him, 7 he became angry ( Q ) with them. He sold them ( R ) into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites, 8 who that year shattered and crushed them. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites on the east side of the Jordan in Gilead, ( S ) the land of the Amorites. 9 The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, ( T ) Benjamin and Ephraim; ( U ) Israel was in great distress. 10 Then the Israelites cried ( V ) out to the Lord , “We have sinned ( W ) against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals.” ( X )
11 The Lord replied, “When the Egyptians, ( Y ) the Amorites, ( Z ) the Ammonites, ( AA ) the Philistines, ( AB ) 12 the Sidonians, the Amalekites ( AC ) and the Maonites [ c ] ( AD ) oppressed you ( AE ) and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands? 13 But you have forsaken ( AF ) me and served other gods, ( AG ) so I will no longer save you. 14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save ( AH ) you when you are in trouble! ( AI ) ”
15 But the Israelites said to the Lord , “We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, ( AJ ) but please rescue us now.” 16 Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the Lord . ( AK ) And he could bear Israel’s misery ( AL ) no longer. ( AM )
17 When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah. ( AN ) 18 The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, “Whoever will take the lead in attacking the Ammonites will be head ( AO ) over all who live in Gilead.”
