Joshua 16

Land for the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh

16 This is the land that Joshua gave to the descendants of Joseph. [ a ] Their land went from the Jordan River at Jericho, and from there it went through the desert into the hills of Bethel.

2 The south border of their land went from Bethel, to Luz, and then to the land of the Arkites at Ataroth. 3 It continued to the west, to the land of the Japhletites as far as lower Beth Horon and Gezer. The border ended at the sea.

4 Joshua gave this land to Manasseh and Ephraim, the sons of Joseph. It was for them and their descendants.

Land for Ephraim's tribe

5 Joshua gave this land to the tribe of Ephraim, clan by clan:

The border of their land went from Ataroth Addar in the east to Beth Horon. 6 Then it continued west to the sea, with Micmethath on the north side of the border. East of Micmethath, the border went past Taanath Shiloh on the east and then to Janoah. 7 From there it went to Ataroth and Naarah and past Jericho to the Jordan River. 8 From Tappuah, the border continued to the west, to the stream of Kanah. From there, it continued to the sea.

That is the land that Joshua gave to the families of the tribe of Ephraim. 9 They also received some towns and villages that were in Manasseh's land. 10 But the tribe of Ephraim did not chase out the Canaanite people who lived in Gezer. Canaanite people still live there with the people of Ephraim, but they have to work as their slaves.

Footnotes

  1. 16:1 The descendants of Joseph became two tribes, Ephraim and Manasseh. Ephraim and Manasseh were Joseph's sons.

Land for Ephraim and Manasseh

16 This is the land that the family of Joseph received. This land started at the Jordan River near Jericho and continued to the waters of Jericho. (This was just east of Jericho.) The border went up from Jericho to the hill country of Bethel. 2 Then the border continued from Bethel (Luz) to the Arkite border at Ataroth. 3 Then the border went west to the border of the Japhletites. The border continued to Lower Beth Horon. Then the border went to Gezer and continued to the Mediterranean Sea.

4 So the people of Manasseh and Ephraim got their land. (Manasseh and Ephraim were sons of Joseph.)

5 This is the land that was given to the people of Ephraim: Their eastern border started at Ataroth Addar near Upper Beth Horon. 6 And the western border started at Micmethath. The border turned to the east to Taanath Shiloh and continued east to Janoah. 7 Then it went from Janoah down to Ataroth and to Naarah. The border continued until it touched Jericho and ended at the Jordan River. 8 The border went from Tappuah west to Kanah Ravine and ended at the sea. This is all the land that was given to the Ephraimites. Each family in that tribe got a part of this land. 9 Many of the border towns of Ephraim were actually in Manasseh’s borders, but the Ephraimites got the towns and the fields around them. 10 But the Ephraimites were not able to force the Canaanites to leave the town of Gezer. So the Canaanites still live among the Ephraimites today, although they did become slaves of the Ephraimites.

16 And the lot of the children of Joseph fell from Jordan by Jericho, unto the water of Jericho on the east, to the wilderness that goeth up from Jericho throughout mount Bethel,

2 And goeth out from Bethel to Luz, and passeth along unto the borders of Archi to Ataroth,

3 And goeth down westward to the coast of Japhleti, unto the coast of Bethhoron the nether, and to Gezer; and the goings out thereof are at the sea.

4 So the children of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, took their inheritance.

5 And the border of the children of Ephraim according to their families was thus: even the border of their inheritance on the east side was Atarothaddar, unto Bethhoron the upper;

6 And the border went out toward the sea to Michmethah on the north side; and the border went about eastward unto Taanathshiloh, and passed by it on the east to Janohah;

7 And it went down from Janohah to Ataroth, and to Naarath, and came to Jericho, and went out at Jordan.

8 The border went out from Tappuah westward unto the river Kanah; and the goings out thereof were at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Ephraim by their families.

9 And the separate cities for the children of Ephraim were among the inheritance of the children of Manasseh, all the cities with their villages.

10 And they drave not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer: but the Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites unto this day, and serve under tribute.

Territory of Ephraim

16 Then the lot for the sons of Joseph went from the Jordan at Jericho to the waters of Jericho on the east into ( A ) the wilderness, going up from Jericho through the hill country to Bethel. 2 It went from Bethel to Luz, and ( B ) continued to the border of the Archites at Ataroth. 3 Then it went down westward to the territory of the Japhletites, as far as the territory of lower ( C ) Beth-horon even to ( D ) Gezer, and [ a ] it ended at the sea.

4 The ( E ) sons of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, received their inheritance. 5 Now this was the territory of the sons of Ephraim according to their families: the border of their inheritance eastward was ( F ) Ataroth-addar, as far as upper Beth-horon. 6 Then the border went westward at ( G ) Michmethath on the north, and the border turned eastward to Taanath-shiloh and continued beyond it to the east of Janoah. 7 Then it went down from Janoah to Ataroth and to ( H ) Naarah, then reached Jericho and came out at the Jordan. 8 From ( I ) Tappuah the border continued westward to the [ b ] brook of Kanah, and [ c ] it ended at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Ephraim according to their families, 9 together with the cities which were set apart for the sons of Ephraim in the midst of the inheritance of the sons of Manasseh, all the cities with their villages. 10 ( J ) But they did not [ d ] drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so ( K ) the Canaanites live in the midst of Ephraim to this day, and they became forced laborers.

Allotment for Ephraim and Manasseh

16 The allotment for Joseph began at the Jordan, east of the springs of Jericho, and went up from there through the desert ( A ) into the hill country of Bethel. ( B ) 2 It went on from Bethel (that is, Luz ( C ) ), [ a ] crossed over to the territory of the Arkites ( D ) in Ataroth, ( E ) 3 descended westward to the territory of the Japhletites as far as the region of Lower Beth Horon ( F ) and on to Gezer, ( G ) ending at the Mediterranean Sea.

4 So Manasseh and Ephraim, the descendants of Joseph, received their inheritance. ( H )

5 This was the territory of Ephraim, according to its clans:

The boundary of their inheritance went from Ataroth Addar ( I ) in the east to Upper Beth Horon ( J ) 6 and continued to the Mediterranean Sea. From Mikmethath ( K ) on the north it curved eastward to Taanath Shiloh, passing by it to Janoah ( L ) on the east. 7 Then it went down from Janoah ( M ) to Ataroth ( N ) and Naarah, touched Jericho and came out at the Jordan. 8 From Tappuah ( O ) the border went west to the Kanah Ravine ( P ) and ended at the Mediterranean Sea. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the Ephraimites, according to its clans. 9 It also included all the towns and their villages that were set aside for the Ephraimites within the inheritance of the Manassites. ( Q )

10 They did not dislodge the Canaanites living in Gezer; to this day the Canaanites live among the people of Ephraim but are required to do forced labor. ( R )
