Joshua 14

14 Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders of the Israelite clans gave different parts of the land to each tribe of Israel. This tells about the land that each tribe received. 2 The leaders used lots to decide which parts of the land God had chosen for each of the 9½ tribes. This is what the Lord had told Moses to do. 3 Moses had already given land east of the Jordan River to the other 2½ tribes. But he had not given any land to the Levites. 4 The descendants of Joseph had now become two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. [ a ] The leaders gave the Levites towns to live in, with enough land near them to feed their animals. 5 The leaders of the Israelites gave a part of the land to each tribe, as the Lord had told Moses to do.

Joshua gives Hebron to Caleb

6 Some of the men of Judah's tribe came to Joshua at Gilgal. Caleb spoke to Joshua. He was the son of Jephunneh, a Kenizzite man. Caleb said, ‘You know what the Lord said to Moses, the man of God, about you and me, at Kadesh-Barnea. 7 I was 40 years old when Moses sent me from there to explore the land of Canaan. I brought back to him a true report. I was sure that we could take the land. 8 The other men who went with me made the people afraid. But I continued to trust the Lord my God. 9 So Moses made a promise to me on that day. He said, “The land that your feet have walked on will always belong to you and to your children. That is because you have trusted the Lord your God.” [ b ]

10 The Lord has kept me alive for 45 years since Moses said this. During that time, the Israelites were travelling in the desert. Now I am 85 years old. 11 I am still as strong as I was on the day that Moses sent me out. I can fight as well now as I could then. 12 So please give to me this hill country that the Lord promised to me. You heard that the Anakites were living there then, in large, strong cities. But the Lord will help me to chase them out, as he has promised to do.’

13 Then Joshua blessed Caleb, Jephunneh's son. Joshua gave Hebron to him as his part of the land. 14 So since that day, Hebron has belonged to Caleb, son of Jephunneh, the Kenizzite. He continued to trust the Lord , Israel's God. So Joshua gave him the land that he wanted. 15 (Before that, Hebron had been called ‘Kiriath Arba’. Arba was a famous Anakite.)

After that, there were no more battles in Canaan.

  1. 14:4 Manasseh and Ephraim were Joseph's sons.
  2. 14:9 See Numbers 13:26-33 and Deuteronomy 1:34-36 .

14 Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders of all the tribes of Israel decided what land to give to the people. 2 The Lord had commanded Moses long ago how he wanted the people to choose their land. The people of the nine and a half tribes threw lots to decide which land they would get. 3 Moses had already given the two and a half tribes their land east of the Jordan River. The tribe of Levi did not receive any land like the other tribes. 4 The descendants of Joseph had divided into two tribes—Manasseh and Ephraim. Each of these tribes received some land; the tribe of Levi was not given any land. They were given only some towns scattered throughout the other tribes and some fields around those towns for their animals. 5 The Lord had told Moses how to divide the land among the tribes of Israel. The Israelites divided the land the way the Lord had commanded.

Caleb Gets His Land

6 One day some people from the tribe of Judah went to Joshua at Gilgal. One of them was Caleb, the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite. Caleb said to Joshua, “You remember what the Lord said at Kadesh Barnea. The Lord was speaking to Moses, his servant. [ a ] The Lord was talking about you and me. 7 Moses, the Lord ’s servant, sent me to look at the land where we were going. I was 40 years old at that time. When I came back, I told Moses what I thought about the land. 8 The other men who went with me told the people things that made them afraid. But I really believed that the Lord would allow us to take that land. 9 So that day Moses made a promise to me. He said, ‘The land where you went will become your land. Your children will own that land forever. I will give you that land because you really believed in the Lord , my God.’

10 “Now the Lord has kept me alive for 45 more years—as he said he would. During that time we all wandered in the desert. Now, here I am, 85 years old. 11 I am still as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me out. I am as ready to fight as I was then. 12 So give me the hill country that the Lord promised me that day long ago. At that time you heard that the strong Anakites lived there and the cities were very big and well protected. But now, maybe the Lord will be with me, and I will take that land just as the Lord said.”

13 Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh. Joshua gave him the city of Hebron as his own. 14 And that city still belongs to the family of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite. That land still belongs to his people because he trusted and obeyed the Lord , God of Israel. 15 In the past that city was called Kiriath Arba. It was named for the greatest man among the Anakites—a man named Arba.

After this there was peace in the land.

Footnotes

  1. Joshua 14:6 his servant Literally, “the man of God.”

14 And these are the countries which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance to them.

2 By lot was their inheritance, as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half tribe.

3 For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and an half tribe on the other side Jordan: but unto the Levites he gave none inheritance among them.

4 For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: therefore they gave no part unto the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their cattle and for their substance.

5 As the Lord commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did, and they divided the land.

6 Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the Lord said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadeshbarnea.

7 Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadeshbarnea to espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart.

8 Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the Lord my God.

9 And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children's for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the Lord my God.

10 And now, behold, the Lord hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the Lord spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.

11 As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.

12 Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the Lord spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the Lord will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the Lord said.

13 And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance.

14 Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.

15 And the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba; which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.

Caleb’s Request

14 Now these are the territories which the sons of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which ( A ) Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers’ households of the tribes of the sons of Israel apportioned to them as inheritances, 2 by the ( B ) lot of their inheritance, just as the Lord commanded [ a ] through Moses, for the nine tribes and the half-tribe. 3 For ( C ) Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe beyond the Jordan; but ( D ) he did not give an inheritance to the Levites among them. 4 For the sons of Joseph were two tribes, ( E ) Manasseh and Ephraim, and they did not give a portion to the Levites in the land, except cities to live in, with their pasture lands for their livestock and for their property. 5 The sons of Israel did exactly ( F ) as the Lord had commanded Moses, and they divided the land.

6 Then the sons of Judah approached Joshua in Gilgal, and ( G ) Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know the word which the Lord spoke to Moses the man of God on account of [ b ] you and me in Kadesh-barnea. 7 I was forty years old when ( H ) Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought word back to him as it was in my heart. 8 Nevertheless my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people [ c ] melt with fear ; but ( I ) I followed the Lord my God fully. 9 So Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘ ( J ) The land on which your foot has walked shall certainly be an inheritance to you and to your children forever, because you have followed the Lord my God fully.’ 10 And now behold, the Lord has let me live, just as He spoke, these forty-five years, from the time that the Lord spoke this word to Moses, when Israel walked in the wilderness; and now behold, I am eighty-five years old today. 11 ( K ) I am still as strong today as I was on the day Moses sent me; as my strength was then, so my strength is now, for war and for ( L ) going out and coming in. 12 Now then, give me this hill country about which the Lord spoke on that day, for you heard on that day that ( M ) Anakim were there, with great fortified cities; perhaps the Lord will be with me, and I will [ d ] drive them out just as the Lord has spoken.”

13 So Joshua ( N ) blessed him and ( O ) gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as an inheritance. 14 Therefore, Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he followed the Lord God of Israel fully. 15 Now the name of Hebron was previously [ e ] Kiriath-arba; for Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim. ( P ) Then the land was at rest from war.

Division of the Land West of the Jordan

14 Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance ( A ) in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar ( B ) the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel ( C ) allotted ( D ) to them. ( E ) 2 Their inheritances were assigned by lot ( F ) to the nine and a half tribes, ( G ) as the Lord had commanded through Moses. 3 Moses had granted the two and a half tribes their inheritance east of the Jordan ( H ) but had not granted the Levites an inheritance among the rest, ( I ) 4 for Joseph’s descendants had become two tribes—Manasseh and Ephraim. ( J ) The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasturelands for their flocks and herds. ( K ) 5 So the Israelites divided the land, just as the Lord had commanded Moses. ( L )

Allotment for Caleb

6 Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, ( M ) and Caleb son of Jephunneh ( N ) the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God ( O ) at Kadesh Barnea ( P ) about you and me. ( Q ) 7 I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea ( R ) to explore the land. ( S ) And I brought him back a report according to my convictions, ( T ) 8 but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear. ( U ) I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly. ( V ) 9 So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance ( W ) and that of your children ( X ) forever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.’ [ a ]

10 “Now then, just as the Lord promised, ( Y ) he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved ( Z ) about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! ( AA ) 11 I am still as strong ( AB ) today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous ( AC ) to go out to battle now as I was then. 12 Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. ( AD ) You yourself heard then that the Anakites ( AE ) were there and their cities were large and fortified, ( AF ) but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”

13 Then Joshua blessed ( AG ) Caleb son of Jephunneh ( AH ) and gave him Hebron ( AI ) as his inheritance. ( AJ ) 14 So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the Lord , the God of Israel, wholeheartedly. ( AK ) 15 (Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba ( AL ) after Arba, ( AM ) who was the greatest man among the Anakites.)

Then the land had rest ( AN ) from war.
