John 14

Jesus is the way to the Father

14 Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Do not be sad or afraid. Believe in God, and also believe in me. 2 There are many rooms in my Father's house. I will go now so that I can prepare a place for you there. If it was not true, I would not have told you this. 3 After I have prepared a place for you, I will return. Then I will take you so that you will be with me. You will be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I will go.’

5 Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you will go. So how can we know the way to get there?’ 6 Jesus answered, ‘I am the way. I am the truth. I am the life. Nobody comes to the Father except by me. 7 If you really know me, you will also know my Father. From now on, you do know him and you have seen him.’

8 Philip said, ‘Lord, show the Father to us. That is all that we need.’ 9 Jesus answered, ‘I have been with all of you for a long time. But still you do not seem to know me, Philip! Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. So why do you say, “Show the Father to us”? 10 I am in the Father and the Father is in me. You should believe that. The words that I say to you do not come from me myself. But the Father lives in me, and he is doing his work. 11 I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Believe me when I say that. You have seen the things that I have done. So, if you do not believe my words, believe because of my work. 12 I tell you this: Whoever believes in me will do the same things that I have been doing. Yes, he will do even greater things than these, because I will go to my Father. 13 Ask me to help you. If you ask anything in my name, I will do it for you. In that way, the Son will show everyone how great the Father is. 14 Yes, you should ask me for anything in my name. [ a ] I will do it for you.’

Jesus promises to send God's Spirit

15 Jesus then said, ‘If you love me, do what I have told you to do. 16 I will ask the Father to help you with this. He will send another Helper to be with you. That Helper will stay with you for ever. 17 He is God's Spirit and he shows you what is true. The people who belong to this world cannot receive him. That is because they cannot see him. They cannot know who he is. But you know him because he stays with you. And he will be in you. 18 I will not let you remain alone, like children without parents. I will come to you.

19 Soon, the people who belong to this world will not see me any more. But you will see me. Because I continue to live, you also will live. 20 On that day, you will know that I am in my Father. You will know that you are in me and I am in you. 21 Those people who obey my commands are the ones who really love me. They accept my words and they do what I say. My Father will love everyone who loves me. I also will love them and I will show myself to them.’

22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, ‘Lord, why will you show yourself only to us? Why will you not show yourself also to the people who belong to this world?’

23 Jesus replied, ‘Everyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them. And my Father and I will come to them and we will make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my message. These words that you hear are not my own. No, they come from the Father, who sent me. 25 I have said these things to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Father will send the Holy Spirit to be with you. He will be your Helper. He will come in my name, and he will teach you all things. [ b ] He will help you to remember everything that I have told you.

27 I will go away but I will give you a gift of peace. It is mine to give and yours to keep. It is not like a gift that this world gives. Do not let yourselves be sad. Do not be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, “I will go away, but I will return to you.” If you loved me, you would be happy because of that. You would be happy because I will go to the Father. And he is greater than I am. 29 I have told you this now, before it happens. So then, when it does happen, you will believe. 30 I will not talk with you much more, because the ruler of this world will come soon. He has no power over me. 31 But the people who belong to this world must learn about me. They must know that I love the Father. I do everything that he tells me to do. I must show that to them. Now get up, we must go from here.’

Footnotes

  1. 14:14 Jesus says that his disciples should ask for things ‘in his name’. This means ‘because they are his’. So they will ask only for things that God is happy to give to them.
  2. 14:26 ‘In my name’ here means that the Holy Spirit is like Jesus himself. He teaches us the things that Jesus wants us to learn.

Jesus Comforts His Followers

14 Jesus said, “Don’t be troubled. Trust in God, and trust in me. 2 There are many rooms in my Father’s house. I would not tell you this if it were not true. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 After I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back. Then I will take you with me, so that you can be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”

5 Thomas said, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

6 Jesus answered, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. The only way to the Father is through me. 7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father too. But now you know the Father. You have seen him.”

8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father. That is all we need.”

9 Jesus answered, “Philip, I have been with you for a long time. So you should know me. Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father too. So why do you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The things I have told you don’t come from me. The Father lives in me, and he is doing his own work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or believe because of the miracles I have done.

12 “I can assure you that whoever believes in me will do the same things I have done. And they will do even greater things than I have done, because I am going to the Father. 13 And if you ask for anything in my name, I will do it for you. Then the Father’s glory will be shown through the Son. 14 If you ask me for anything in my name, I will do it.

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, you will do what I command. 16 I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper [ a ] to be with you forever. 17 The Helper is the Spirit of truth. [ b ] The people of the world cannot accept him, because they don’t see him or know him. But you know him. He lives with you, and he will be in you.

18 “I will not leave you all alone like orphans. I will come back to you. 19 In a very short time the people in the world will not see me anymore. But you will see me. You will live because I live. 20 On that day you will know that I am in the Father. You will know that you are in me and I am in you. 21 Those who really love me are the ones who not only know my commands but also obey them. My Father will love such people, and I will love them. I will make myself known to them.”

22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “Lord, how will you make yourself known to us, but not to the world?”

23 Jesus answered, “All who love me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them. My Father and I will come to them and live with them. 24 But anyone who does not love me does not obey my teaching. This teaching that you hear is not really mine. It is from my Father who sent me.

25 “I have told you all these things while I am with you. 26 But the Helper will teach you everything and cause you to remember all that I told you. This Helper is the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name.

27 “I leave you peace. It is my own peace I give you. I give you peace in a different way than the world does. So don’t be troubled. Don’t be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am leaving, but I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be happy that I am going back to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am. 29 I have told you this now, before it happens. Then when it happens, you will believe.

30 “I will not talk with you much longer. The ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me. 31 But the world must know that I love the Father. So I do exactly what the Father told me to do.

“Come now, let’s go.”

Footnotes

  1. John 14:16 Helper Or “Comforter,” the Holy Spirit (see “ Holy Spirit ” in the Word List). Also in verse 26.
  2. John 14:17 Spirit of truth The Holy Spirit (see “ Holy Spirit ” in the Word List). It was his work to help Jesus’ followers understand God’s truth. See Jn. 16:13.

14 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?

10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?

23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.

30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14 ( A ) Do not let your heart be troubled; [ a ] believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many [ b ] rooms; if that were not so , [ c ] I would have told you, because ( B ) I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, ( C ) I am coming again and will take you to Myself, so that ( D ) where I am, there you also will be. 4 And you know the way where I am going.” 5 ( E ) Thomas *said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going; how do we know the way?” 6 Jesus *said to him, “I am ( F ) the way, and ( G ) the truth, and ( H ) the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me.

Oneness with the Father

7 ( I ) If you [ d ] had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you ( J ) know Him, and have ( K ) seen Him.”

8 ( L ) Philip *said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus *said to him, “Have I been with [ e ] you for so long a time, and yet [ f ] you have not come to know Me, Philip? ( M ) The one who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that ( N ) I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? ( O ) The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own, but the Father, as He remains in Me, does His works. 11 Believe Me that ( P ) I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise ( Q ) believe because of the works themselves. 12 Truly, truly I say to you, the one who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and ( R ) greater works than these he will do; because ( S ) I am going to the Father. 13 And ( T ) whatever you ask in My name, this I will do, so that ( U ) the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask Me anything ( V ) in My name, I will do it .

15 ( W ) If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

The Holy Spirit

16 I will ask the Father, and He will give you another [ g ] ( X ) Helper, so that He may be with you forever; 17 the Helper is ( Y ) the Spirit of truth, ( Z ) whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him; but you know Him because He remains with you and will be in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; ( AA ) I am coming to you. 19 [ h ] ( AB ) After a little while, ( AC ) the world no longer is going to see Me, but you are going to see Me; ( AD ) because I live, you also will live. 20 ( AE ) On that day you will know that ( AF ) I am in My Father, and you are in Me, and I in you. 21 ( AG ) The one who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and ( AH ) the one who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will ( AI ) reveal Myself to him.” 22 ( AJ ) Judas (not Iscariot) *said to Him, “Lord, what has happened ( AK ) that You are going to reveal Yourself to us and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered and said to him, ( AL ) If anyone loves Me, he will ( AM ) follow My word; and ( AN ) My Father will love him, and We ( AO ) will come to him and make Our dwelling with him. 24 The one who does not love Me ( AP ) does not follow My words; and ( AQ ) the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while remaining with you. 26 But the ( AR ) Helper, the Holy Spirit ( AS ) whom the Father will send in My name, ( AT ) He will teach you all things, and ( AU ) remind you of all that I said to you. 27 ( AV ) Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. ( AW ) [ i ] Do not let your hearts be troubled, nor [ j ] fearful. 28 ( AX ) You heard that I said to you, ‘I am going away, and ( AY ) I am coming to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced [ k ] because ( AZ ) I am going to the Father, for ( BA ) the Father is greater than I. 29 And now ( BB ) I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe. 30 I will not speak much more with you, for ( BC ) the ruler of the world is coming, and he has [ l ] nothing in regard to Me, 31 but so that the world may know that I love the Father, [ m ] I do exactly as ( BD ) the Father commanded Me. Get up, ( BE ) let’s go from here.

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. ( A ) You believe ( B ) in God [ a ] ; ( C ) believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there ( D ) to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back ( E ) and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. ( F ) 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus the Way to the Father

5 Thomas ( G ) said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

6 Jesus answered, “I am ( H ) the way ( I ) and the truth ( J ) and the life. ( K ) No one comes to the Father except through me. ( L ) 7 If you really know me, you will know [ b ] my Father as well. ( M ) From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

8 Philip ( N ) said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. ( O ) How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? ( P ) The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. ( Q ) Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. ( R ) 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes ( S ) in me will do the works I have been doing, ( T ) and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask ( U ) in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, keep my commands. ( V ) 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate ( W ) to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. ( X ) The world cannot accept him, ( Y ) because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be [ c ] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; ( Z ) I will come to you. ( AA ) 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. ( AB ) Because I live, you also will live. ( AC ) 20 On that day ( AD ) you will realize that I am in my Father, ( AE ) and you are in me, and I am in you. ( AF ) 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. ( AG ) The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, ( AH ) and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

22 Then Judas ( AI ) (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?” ( AJ )

23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. ( AK ) My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. ( AL ) 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. ( AM )

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, ( AN ) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, ( AO ) will teach you all things ( AP ) and will remind you of everything I have said to you. ( AQ ) 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. ( AR ) I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled ( AS ) and do not be afraid.

28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ ( AT ) If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, ( AU ) for the Father is greater than I. ( AV ) 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. ( AW ) 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world ( AX ) is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me. ( AY )

“Come now; let us leave.
