Job 13

13 Lo, mine eye hath seen all this, mine ear hath heard and understood it.

² What ye know, the same do I know also: I am not inferior unto you.

³ Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.

⁴ But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value.

⁵ O that ye would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.

⁶ Hear now my reasoning, and hearken to the pleadings of my lips.

⁷ Will ye speak wickedly for God? and talk deceitfully for him?

⁸ Will ye accept his person? will ye contend for God?

⁹ Is it good that he should search you out? or as one man mocketh another, do ye so mock him?

¹⁰ He will surely reprove you, if ye do secretly accept persons.

¹¹ Shall not his excellency make you afraid? and his dread fall upon you?

¹² Your remembrances are like unto ashes, your bodies to bodies of clay.

¹³ Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what will.

¹⁴ Wherefore do I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in mine hand?

¹⁵ Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.

¹⁶ He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him.

¹⁷ Hear diligently my speech, and my declaration with your ears.

¹⁸ Behold now, I have ordered my cause; I know that I shall be justified.

¹⁹ Who is he that will plead with me? for now, if I hold my tongue, I shall give up the ghost.

²⁰ Only do not two things unto me: then will I not hide myself from thee.

²¹ Withdraw thine hand far from me: and let not thy dread make me afraid.

²² Then call thou, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer thou me.

²³ How many are mine iniquities and sins? make me to know my transgression and my sin.

²⁴ Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and holdest me for thine enemy?

²⁵ Wilt thou break a leaf driven to and fro? and wilt thou pursue the dry stubble?

²⁶ For thou writest bitter things against me, and makest me to possess the iniquities of my youth.

²⁷ Thou puttest my feet also in the stocks, and lookest narrowly unto all my paths; thou settest a print upon the heels of my feet.

²⁸ And he, as a rotten thing, consumeth, as a garment that is moth eaten.

13 “I have seen all this before.
I have already heard everything you say.
I understand all these things.
² I know as much as you do.
I am as smart as you are.
³ But I don’t want to argue with you.
I want to speak to God All-Powerful.
I want to argue with God about my troubles.
⁴ But you men try to cover up your ignorance with lies.
You are like worthless doctors who cannot heal anyone.
⁵ I wish you would just be quiet.
That would be the wisest thing you could do.

⁶ “Now, listen to my argument.
Listen to what I have to say.
⁷ Will you speak lies for God?
Do you really believe your lies are what God wants you to say?
⁸ Are you trying to defend God against me?
You are not being fair.
You are choosing God’s side simply because he is God.
⁹ If God checked you very closely,
would he see that you are right?
Do you really think you can fool God
the same as you fool people?
¹⁰ You know that God would criticize you
if you chose someone’s side simply because they were important.
¹¹ God’s majesty frightens you.
You are afraid of him.
¹² The wise sayings you quote are worthless.
Your arguments are as weak as clay.

¹³ “Be quiet and let me talk!
I accept whatever happens to me.
¹⁴ I will put myself in danger
and take my life in my own hands.
¹⁵ I will continue to trust God even if he kills me. ^{[ a ]}
But I will defend myself to his face.
¹⁶ And if he lets me live, it will be because I had the confidence to speak.
No guilty person would dare meet God face to face.
¹⁷ Listen carefully to what I say.
Let me explain.
¹⁸ I am ready now to defend myself.
I will carefully present my arguments.
I know I will be shown to be right.
¹⁹ If anyone can prove I am wrong,
I will shut up and wait to die.

²⁰ “God, just give me two things,
and then I will not hide from you:
²¹ Stop punishing me,
and don’t frighten me with your terrors.
²² Then call to me, and I will answer you.
Or let me speak, and you answer me.
²³ How many sins have I committed?
What wrongs have I done?
Show me where I went wrong or how I sinned.
²⁴ God, why do you avoid me
and treat me like your enemy?
²⁵ Are you trying to scare me?
I am only a leaf blowing in the wind.
You are attacking a piece of straw!
²⁶ You have a list of terrible charges against me.
Are you making me suffer for the sins I did when I was young?
²⁷ You have put chains on my feet.
You watch every step I take.
You see every move I make.
²⁸ So I am becoming weaker and weaker,
like a piece of wood rotting away,
like a piece of cloth eaten by moths.

Leave me alone, that I may speak.

and put my life in my hand?
¹⁵ Behold, he will kill me.
I have no hope.
Nevertheless, I will maintain my ways before him.
¹⁶ This also will be my salvation,
that a godless man will not come before him.
¹⁷ Listen carefully to my speech.
Let my declaration be in your ears.
¹⁸ See now, I have set my cause in order.
I know that I am righteous.
¹⁹ Who is he who will contend with me?
For then would I hold my peace and give up the spirit.

²⁰ “Only don’t do two things to me,
then I will not hide myself from your face:
²¹ withdraw your hand far from me,
and don’t let your terror make me afraid.
²² Then call, and I will answer,
or let me speak, and you answer me.
²³ How many are my iniquities and sins?
Make me know my disobedience and my sin.
²⁴ Why do you hide your face,
and consider me your enemy?
²⁵ Will you harass a driven leaf?
Will you pursue the dry stubble?
²⁶ For you write bitter things against me,
and make me inherit the iniquities of my youth:
²⁷ You also put my feet in the stocks,
and mark all my paths.
You set a bound to the soles of my feet,
²⁸ though I am decaying like a rotten thing,
like a garment that is moth-eaten.

13 Lo, all -- hath mine eye seen, Heard hath mine ear, and it attendeth to it.

² According to your knowledge I have known -- also I. I am not fallen more than you.

³ Yet I for the Mighty One do speak, And to argue for God I delight.

⁴ And yet, ye [are] forgers of falsehood, Physicians of nought -- all of you,

⁵ O that ye would keep perfectly silent, And it would be to you for wisdom.

⁶ Hear, I pray you, my argument, And to the pleadings of my lips attend,

⁷ For God do ye speak perverseness? And for Him do ye speak deceit?

⁸ His face do ye accept, if for God ye strive?

⁹ Is [it] good that He doth search you, If, as one mocketh at a man, ye mock at Him?

¹⁰ He doth surely reprove you, if in secret ye accept faces.

¹¹ Doth not His excellency terrify you? And His dread fall upon you?

¹² Your remembrances [are] similes of ashes, For high places of clay your heights.

¹³ Keep silent from me, and I speak, And pass over me doth what?

¹⁴ Wherefore do I take my flesh in my teeth? And my soul put in my hand?

¹⁵ Lo, He doth slay me -- I wait not! Only, my ways unto His face I argue.

¹⁶ Also -- He [is] to me for salvation, For the profane cometh not before Him.

¹⁷ Hear ye diligently my word, And my declaration with your ears.

¹⁸ Lo, I pray you, I have set in order the cause, I have known that I am righteous.

¹⁹ Who [is] he that doth strive with me? For now I keep silent and gasp.

²⁰ Only two things, O God, do with me: Then from Thy face I am not hidden.

²¹ Thy hand put far off from me, And Thy terror let not terrify me.

²² And call Thou, and I -- I answer, Or -- I speak, and answer Thou me.

²³ How many iniquities and sins have I? My transgression and my sin let me know.

²⁴ Why dost Thou hide Thy face? And reckonest me for an enemy to Thee?

²⁵ A leaf driven away dost Thou terrify? And the dry stubble dost Thou pursue?

²⁶ For Thou writest against me bitter things, And causest me to possess iniquities of my youth:

²⁷ And puttest in the stocks my feet, And observest all my paths, On the roots of my feet Thou settest a print,

²⁸ And he, as a rotten thing, weareth away, As a garment hath a moth consumed him.

13 Behold my eye hath seen all these things, and my ear hath heard them, and I have understood them all.

² According to your knowledge I also know: neither am I inferior to you.

³ But yet I will speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.

⁴ Having first shewn that you are forgers of lies, and maintainers of perverse opinions.

⁵ And I wish you would hold your peace, that you might be thought to be wise men.

⁶ Hear ye therefore my reproof, and attend to the judgment of my lips.

⁷ Hath God any need of your lie, that you should speak deceitfully for him?

⁸ Do you accept his person, and do you endeavour to judge for God?

⁹ Or shall it please him, from whom nothing can be concealed? or shall he be deceived as a man, with your deceitful dealings?

¹⁰ He shall reprove you, because in secret you accept his person.

¹¹ As soon as he shall move himself, he shall trouble you: and his dread shall fall upon you.

¹² Your remembrance shall be compared to ashes, and your necks shall be brought to clay.

¹³ Hold your peace a little while, that I may speak whatsoever my mind shall suggest to me.

¹⁴ Why do I tear my flesh with my teeth, and carry my soul in my hands?

¹⁵ Although he should kill me, I will trust in him: but yet I will reprove my ways in his sight.

¹⁶ And he shall be my saviour: for no hypocrite shall come before his presence.

¹⁷ Hear ye my speech, and receive with Sour ears hidden truths.

¹⁸ If I shall be judged, I know that I shall be found just.

¹⁹ Who is he that will plead against me? let him come: why am I consumed holding my peace?

²⁰ Two things only do not to me, and then from thy face I shall not be hid:

²¹ Withdraw thy hand far from me, and let not thy dread terrify me.

²² Call me, and I will answer thee: or else I will speak, and do thou answer me.

²³ How many are my iniquities and sins? make me know my crimes and offences.

²⁴ Why hidest thou thy face, and thinkest me thy enemy?

²⁵ Against a leaf, that is carried away with the wind, thou shewest thy power, and thou pursuest a dry straw.

²⁶ For thou writest bitter things against me, and wilt consume me for the sins of my youth.

²⁷ Thou hast put my feet in the stocks, and hast observed all my paths, and hast considered the steps of my feet:

²⁸ Who am to be consumed as rottenness, and as a garment that is moth-eaten.
