Job 1

Job was a good man

1 There was a man who lived in a place called Uz. His name was Job. He was a good and honest man. He was afraid to make God angry. He refused to do evil things. 2 Job had seven sons and three daughters. 3 He had 7,000 sheep and 3,000 camels. He had 500 pairs of oxen and 500 donkeys. He also had many servants. He was the richest person in the east part of the world.

4 Each of Job's sons would give parties for each other in their homes. They sent messages to their three sisters to come and eat the feast with them. 5 After each party, Job would ask his children to come and visit him. He wanted to make them clean again if they were guilty of bad things. He thought, ‘Perhaps they have done something that is bad. Perhaps they have thought bad things against God.’ So he would get up early in the morning. He would offer a burnt offering as a sacrifice for each of his children. Job always did this after each party that his children had.

Satan meets with God

6 One day, the angels came to meet with the Lord in heaven. [ a ] Satan also came and he stood there with them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, ‘Where have you come from?’ Satan replied, ‘I have been travelling all over the earth. I have been watching the things that happen there.’

8 Then the Lord said to Satan, ‘You have seen Job, who is my servant. What do you think about him? There is no one on earth that is like him. He is a good and honest man. He is afraid to make me angry. He refuses to do evil things.’

9 Satan answered the Lord , ‘There is a very good reason why Job obeys you. 10 You do not let any bad things happen to him. You keep him, his family and all his things safe. You have given him success with everything that he does. His many farm animals are everywhere! 11 You should take away from him all the things that he has. Then he will certainly curse you very strongly.’

12 So the Lord said to Satan, ‘I agree to give you power over all the things that belong to Job. But you must do nothing to hurt Job himself.’

After that, Satan went away. [ b ]

Satan destroys all Job's things

13 One day, Job's sons and daughters were at a party in the home of his oldest son. 14 A servant brought a message to Job. He said, ‘We were using your oxen to plough the fields. Your donkeys were eating grass beside them. 15 Some men from Sheba suddenly came and they attacked us. They took away all your oxen and your donkeys. They also killed all your other servants. I was the only one who escaped. I ran here to tell you what has happened.’

16 That servant was still speaking, when another servant arrived. He said to Job, ‘God has sent lightning down from the sky. It has killed your sheep and your servants. I was the only one who escaped. I ran here to tell you what has happened.’

17 Before that servant had finished speaking, a third servant arrived. He said to Job, ‘Some robbers from Chaldea suddenly attacked us. They took away all your camels and they killed your servants. I was the only one who escaped. I ran here to tell you what has happened.’

18 That servant was still speaking, when a fourth servant arrived. He said to Job, ‘Your children were eating a feast at a party in the home of your oldest son. 19 Suddenly there was a strong storm that came from the desert. The wind destroyed the house where your children were. The house fell on them and it killed them. I was the only one who escaped. I ran here to tell you what has happened.’

20 When Job heard this news he was very upset. He tore his clothes and he cut off all his hair. Then he bent down low on the ground to worship God. 21 He said, ‘When I was born, I had nothing. When I die, I will take nothing with me. The Lord has given me all the things that I have. The Lord may choose to take those things away. I will continue to praise the name of the Lord !’

22 Even after all these things had happened, Job still did not do anything bad. He did not say that God had done something wrong to him.

Footnotes

  1. 1:6 When we write Lord like this, it is a special name for God. Sometimes people write it as ‘Yahweh’, or as ‘Jehovah’. It is his own name that he told Moses. See Exodus 3:14 . It means ‘I am who I am’. This shows that God has always been there and he always will be there.
  2. 1:12 Some of the events in this part of the book happen in heaven. Job does not know about these events. So he does not know why all the bad things have happened to him.

Job, the Good Man

1 There was a man named Job who lived in the country of Uz. He was a good, honest man. He respected God and refused to do evil. 2 Job had seven sons and three daughters. 3 He owned 7000 sheep, 3000 camels, 1000 oxen, and 500 female donkeys. He had many servants. He was the richest man in the east.

4 Job’s sons took turns having dinner parties in their homes, and they invited their sisters. 5 The day after each of these parties, Job got up early in the morning, sent for his children, and offered a burnt offering for each of them. He thought, “Maybe my children were careless and sinned against God at their party.” Job always did this so that his children would be forgiven of their sins.

6 Then the day came for the angels [ a ] to meet with the Lord . Even Satan was there with them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you been?”

Satan answered the Lord , “I have been roaming around the earth, going from place to place.”

8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him. He is a good, faithful man. He respects God and refuses to do evil.”

9 Satan answered the Lord , “But Job has a good reason to respect you. 10 You always protect him, his family, and everything he has. You have blessed him and made him successful in everything he does. He is so wealthy that his herds and flocks are all over the country. 11 But if you were to destroy everything he has, I promise you that he would curse you to your face.”

12 The Lord said to Satan, “All right, do whatever you want with anything that he has, but don’t hurt Job himself.”

Then Satan left the meeting.

Job Loses Everything

13 One day Job’s sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house. 14 A messenger came to Job and said, “We were plowing the fields with the oxen and the donkeys were eating grass nearby, 15 when some Sabeans [ b ] attacked us and took your animals! They killed the other servants. I am the only one who escaped to come and tell you the news!”

16 That messenger was still speaking when another one came in and said, “A bolt of lightning [ c ] struck your sheep and servants and burned them up. I am the only one who escaped to come and tell you the news!”

17 That messenger was still speaking when another one came in and said, “The Chaldeans [ d ] sent out three raiding parties that attacked us and took the camels! They killed the other servants. I am the only one who escaped to come and tell you the news!”

18 That messenger was still speaking when another one came in and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house. 19 A strong wind suddenly came in from across the desert and blew the house down. It fell on your sons and daughters, and they are all dead. I am the only one who escaped to come and tell you the news!”

20 When Job heard this, he got up, tore his clothes, and shaved his head to show his sadness. Then he fell to the ground to bow down before God 21 and said,

“When I was born into this world,
I was naked and had nothing.
When I die and leave this world,
I will be naked and have nothing.
The Lord gives,
and the Lord takes away.
Praise the name of the Lord !”

22 Even after all this, Job did not sin. He did not accuse God of doing anything wrong.

1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.

2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.

3 His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.

4 And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

5 And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord , and Satan came also among them.

7 And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the Lord , and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

8 And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

9 Then Satan answered the Lord , and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.

12 And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord .

13 And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

14 And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:

15 And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

16 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

17 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

18 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

19 And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,

21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord .

22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

Job’s Character and Wealth

1 There was a man in the ( A ) land of Uz whose name was ( B ) Job; and that man was ( C ) blameless, upright, ( D ) fearing God and ( E ) turning away from evil. 2 ( F ) Seven sons and three daughters were born to him. 3 ( G ) His possessions were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and very many servants; and that man was ( H ) the greatest of all the [ a ] men of the east. 4 His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send word and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 When the days of feasting had completed their cycle, Job would send word to them and consecrate them, getting up early in the morning and offering ( I ) burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, “ ( J ) Perhaps my sons have sinned and ( K ) cursed God in their hearts.” Job did so continually.

6 ( L ) Now there was a day when the [ b ] ( M ) sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord , and [ c ] Satan also came among them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “ ( N ) From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” 8 The Lord said to Satan, “Have you [ d ] considered ( O ) My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, ( P ) a blameless and upright man, [ e ] fearing God and turning away from evil.” 9 Then ( Q ) Satan answered the [ f ] Lord , “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 ( R ) Have You not made a fence around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? ( S ) You have blessed the work of his hands, and his ( T ) possessions have increased in the land. 11 ( U ) But reach out with Your hand now and ( V ) touch all that he has; he will certainly curse You to Your face.” 12 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your [ g ] power; only do not reach out and put your hand on him.” So Satan departed from the presence of the Lord .

Satan Allowed to Test Job

13 Now on the day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the female donkeys feeding beside them, 15 and [ h ] the ( W ) Sabeans [ i ] attacked and took them. They also [ j ] killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and [ k ] I alone have escaped to tell you.” 16 While he was still speaking, another came and said, “ ( X ) The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 17 While he was still speaking, another came and said, “The ( Y ) Chaldeans formed three units and made a raid on the camels and took them, and [ l ] killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 18 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 19 and behold, a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people and they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”

20 Then Job got up, ( Z ) tore his robe, and shaved his head; then he fell to the ground and worshiped. 21 He said,

( AA ) Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
And naked I shall return there.
The ( AB ) Lord gave and the Lord has taken away.
Blessed be the name of the Lord .”

22 ( AC ) Despite all this, Job did not sin, nor did he [ m ] blame God.

Prologue

1 In the land of Uz ( A ) there lived a man whose name was Job. ( B ) This man was blameless ( C ) and upright; ( D ) he feared God ( E ) and shunned evil. ( F ) 2 He had seven sons ( G ) and three daughters, ( H ) 3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, ( I ) and had a large number of servants. ( J ) He was the greatest man ( K ) among all the people of the East. ( L )

4 His sons used to hold feasts ( M ) in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified. ( N ) Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering ( O ) for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned ( P ) and cursed God ( Q ) in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.

6 One day the angels [ a ] ( R ) came to present themselves before the Lord , and Satan [ b ] ( S ) also came with them. ( T ) 7 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”

Satan answered the Lord , “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.” ( U )

8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? ( V ) There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God ( W ) and shuns evil.” ( X )

9 “Does Job fear God for nothing?” ( Y ) Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge ( Z ) around him and his household and everything he has? ( AA ) You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. ( AB ) 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, ( AC ) and he will surely curse you to your face.” ( AD )

12 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has ( AE ) is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.” ( AF )

Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord .

13 One day when Job’s sons and daughters ( AG ) were feasting ( AH ) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing ( AI ) nearby, 15 and the Sabeans ( AJ ) attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

16 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens ( AK ) and burned up the sheep and the servants, ( AL ) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

17 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The Chaldeans ( AM ) formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters ( AN ) were feasting ( AO ) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 19 when suddenly a mighty wind ( AP ) swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, ( AQ ) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you! ( AR )

20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe ( AS ) and shaved his head. ( AT ) Then he fell to the ground in worship ( AU ) 21 and said:

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will depart. [ c ] ( AV )
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; ( AW )
may the name of the Lord be praised.” ( AX )

22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing. ( AY )
