25 The Lord spoke to Jeremiah in the fourth year that Jehoiakim ruled Judah as king. Jehoiakim was the son of King Josiah. It was also the first year that Nebuchadnezzar was king of Babylon. The Lord 's message was about the people of Judah. 2 So the prophet Jeremiah spoke to all the people of Judah and to all the people who were living in Jerusalem.
3 He said, ‘For 23 years the Lord has been giving me his messages. I started to tell you his messages when Amon's son Josiah had been ruling Judah for 13 years. I have continued to tell you many times what the Lord has said, even until today. But you have refused to listen.
4 The Lord has also sent his servants, the prophets, to speak to you many times. You have refused to listen to them too. 5 The Lord 's message to you was, “Turn away from your wicked way of life. Stop doing the evil things that you are doing. If you do that, you may continue to live in this land. It is the land that the Lord gave to you and to your ancestors to be their home for ever. 6 Do not look for other gods that you can serve and worship. Do not continue to do things that make me angry. Then I will not hurt you.”
7 So now the Lord says, “You have refused to listen to my messages. You have continued to do things that make me angry. So you have brought trouble on yourselves.”
8 The Lord Almighty says, “You have not listened to my messages. 9 So I, the Lord , tell you that I will call the nations in the north to come. I will call my servant, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, to come. I will bring them to attack this land and the people who live here. They will also attack all the nations that are around you. I will completely destroy this land, its people and all the nations around it. Their houses will become heaps of stones for ever. The land will become a terrible place. People will always see how foolish my people are. 10 Everywhere, I will stop people's happy songs and their marriage parties. Nobody will make flour any more. Nobody will light lamps in their homes. 11 This whole place will be as empty as a desert. Nobody will live here. The people of Judah and these other nations will serve the king of Babylon for 70 years.”
12 The Lord also says, “But after the 70 years have finished, I will punish the king of Babylon and his nation. I will punish them for their sins. I will destroy the land of the Babylonians. It will be a heap of stones for ever. 13 I will certainly do to them all the terrible things that I have spoken about. I will do to them everything that is written in this book. I will cause them to have all the trouble that Jeremiah prophesies against all the nations. [ a ] 14 Many nations and great kings will have power over the king of Babylon and his people. The Babylonians will become their slaves. In that way, I will punish the Babylonians for all the bad things that they did to my people.” ’
15 The Lord , Israel's God, said to me, ‘Take this cup from me. It is full of wine that shows my great anger. Take it to the nations where I send you. Make them drink this wine of punishment. 16 When they drink it, they will walk like people who are drunk. They will seem to be crazy, because they know that I will send armies to attack them.’
17 So I took the cup from the Lord 's hand. In my vision, I took it to the nations where the Lord sent me. I made them drink the wine of his punishment. 18 I went to Jerusalem and the other cities of Judah. I made the people of Judah, its kings and its officers drink from the cup. It was to destroy them all. Judah would become a terrible place. People would see that its people are very foolish. They would use their name as a curse. That is already happening today.
19 I also took the cup of punishment to these people:
Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and his officers, his servants and his people;
20 the foreign people who lived in Egypt;
all the kings of Uz;
all the kings of the Philistines (They were the kings of Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron and the people who were still living in Ashdod);
21 the people of Edom, Moab and Ammon;
22 all the kings of Tyre and all the kings of Sidon;
the kings of the nations around the Mediterranean Sea;
23 the people of Dedan, Tema, and Buz;
the people who live in the desert and who cut their hair short;
24 all the kings of Arabia and the kings of the tribes who live in the desert;
25 all the kings of Zimri, Elam and Media;
26 all the kings of the nations in the north, those who live near together and those who live far apart;
the people of all the other kingdoms everywhere on the earth.
Finally, the king of Babylon will have to drink the wine of the Lord 's great anger.
27 Then the Lord said to me, ‘Tell them that the Lord Almighty, Israel's God, says, “Drink the wine from this cup until you become drunk. Drink so much that you are sick. Drink it until you fall down and cannot get up again, because you know that I will send armies to attack you.”
28 But people may refuse to take the cup from you. They may refuse to drink from it. Then you must tell them that the Lord Almighty says this: “You must drink this wine of my punishment! 29 I have already begun to punish Jerusalem, the city that is my special home. So do not think that I will leave you other nations alone! I will certainly punish you too. I will send war against everyone who lives on the earth. That is what the Lord Almighty says will happen!”
30 Now Jeremiah, prophesy this message against them:
“The Lord will shout from his high place above.
He will roar like a lion that is ready to attack his land.
He will make a noise like thunder from his holy home.
He will shout aloud like people who are stamping on grapes
to make wine.
He will shout against everyone who lives on the earth.
31 People everywhere will hear his message.
The Lord will accuse the nations of their sins,
and he will judge all the people on the earth.
He will send war to kill all the wicked people.”
That is what the Lord says.
32 The Lord Almighty also says this:
“Listen to me! Great trouble will come to every single nation.
War will come like a great storm
from the ends of the earth.”
33 At that time, dead bodies will lie everywhere,
all over the earth.
Those will be people that the Lord has killed.
Nobody will weep for them.
Nobody will take their bodies
to bury them in the ground.
Their dead bodies will lie on the ground like dung.
34 You leaders should have been like shepherds
to take care of my people.
But now it is time for you to weep!
Roll on the ground in the dust!
The time of your death has arrived.
You will lie on the ground,
like pieces of a broken pot.
35 The leaders will not be able to run away and hide.
The shepherds of my people will not escape.
36 Listen to the leaders as they weep!
The Lord 's people were like their sheep.
Now the shepherds are weeping loudly,
because the Lord is destroying their fields.
37 The Lord will completely destroy the fields
where the sheep quietly ate the grass.
He will do that because he is very angry.
38 The Lord will come out,
like a lion that comes out of its cave.
He will make their land a terrible place.
Cruel armies will destroy the land,
because of the Lord 's great anger.’
25 This is the message that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah. This message came in the fourth year that Jehoiakim [ a ] son of Josiah was king of Judah. The fourth year of his time as king was the first year that Nebuchadnezzar was king of Babylon. 2 This is the message that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the people of Judah and all the people of Jerusalem:
3 I have been a prophet for these past 23 years, from the 13th year that Josiah son of Amon was the king of Judah. And from that time until today, I have spoken messages to you from the Lord again and again. But you have not listened. 4 The Lord has sent his servants, the prophets, to you over and over again. But you have not listened to them. You have not paid any attention to them.
5 Those prophets said, “Change your lives and stop doing evil! If you change, you can return to the land that the Lord gave you and your ancestors long ago. He gave you this land to live in forever. 6 Don’t follow other gods. Don’t serve or worship them. Don’t worship idols that someone has made. That only makes me angry with you. By doing this you only hurt yourselves.” [ b ]
7 “But you did not listen to me.” This message is from the Lord . “You worshiped idols that someone made, and that made me angry. And it only hurt you.”
8 So this is what the Lord All-Powerful says, “You have not listened to my messages. 9 I will soon send for all the tribes of the north. [ c ] ” This message is from the Lord . “I will soon send for King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. He is my servant. I will bring those people against the land of Judah and against the people of Judah. I will bring them against all the nations around you too. I will destroy all those countries. I will make those lands like an empty desert forever. People will see those countries, and whistle at how badly they were destroyed. 10 I will bring an end to the sounds of joy and happiness in those places. There will be no more happy sounds of the brides and bridegrooms. I will take away the sound of people grinding meal. I will take away the light of the lamp. 11 That whole area will be an empty desert. All these people will be slaves of the king of Babylon for 70 years.
12 “But when the 70 years have passed, I will punish the king of Babylon. I will punish the nation of Babylon.” This message is from the Lord . “I will punish the land of the Babylonians for their sins. I will make that land a desert forever. 13 I said many bad things will happen to Babylon, and all of them will happen. Jeremiah spoke about those foreign nations. And all the warnings are written in this book. 14 Yes, the people of Babylon will have to serve many nations and many great kings. I will give them the punishment they deserve for all the things they have done.”
15 The Lord , the God of Israel, said this to me: “Jeremiah, take this cup of wine from my hand. It is the wine of my anger. I am sending you to different nations. Make all the nations drink from this cup. 16 They will drink this wine. Then they will vomit and act like crazy people. They will do this because of the war that I will soon bring against them.”
17 So I took the cup of wine from the Lord ’s hand. I went to those nations and I made them drink from the cup. 18 I poured this wine for the people of Jerusalem and Judah. I made the kings and leaders of Judah drink from the cup. I did this so that they would become an empty desert. I did this so that place would be destroyed so badly that people would whistle and say curses about it. And it happened—Judah is like that now.
19 I also made Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, drink from that cup. I made his officials, his important leaders, and all his people drink from it.
20 I also made all the Arabs and all the kings of the land of Uz drink from the cup.
I made all the kings of the land of the Philistines drink from the cup. These were the kings of the cities of Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and what remains of the city Ashdod.
21 Then I made the people of Edom, Moab, and Ammon drink from the cup.
22 I made all the kings of Tyre and Sidon drink from the cup.
I also made all the kings of the faraway countries drink from that cup. 23 I made the people of Dedan, Tema, and Buz drink from the cup. I made all those who cut their hair at their temples drink from the cup. 24 I made all the kings of Arabia drink from the cup. These kings live in the desert. 25 I made all the kings from Zimri, Elam, and Media drink from the cup. 26 I made all the kings of the north, those who were near and far, drink from the cup. I made them drink one after the other. I made all the kingdoms that are on earth drink from that cup. Finally, after all these other nations, the king of Babylon will drink from it too.
27 “Jeremiah, say to those nations, this is what the Lord All-Powerful, the God of the people of Israel, says: ‘Drink this cup of my anger. Get drunk from it and vomit. Fall down and don’t get up. Don’t get up because I am bringing wars against you.’
28 “They will refuse to take the cup from your hand. They will refuse to drink it, but you will tell them, ‘This is what the Lord All-Powerful says: You will surely drink from this cup! 29 I am already making these bad things happen to Jerusalem, the city that is called by my name. Maybe you people think that you will not be punished, but you are wrong. You will be punished! I am giving the command for war to come against all the people of the earth.’” This message is from the Lord .
30 “Jeremiah, you will give them this message:
‘The Lord shouts from above.
He shouts from his holy Temple.
He shouts against his people.
His shouts are loud like the songs of people walking on grapes to make wine.
31 The noise spreads to all the people on earth.
What is all the noise about?
The Lord tells why he is punishing all the nations.
He has given his arguments against them.
He has judged them,
and now he is killing the wicked with his sword.’”
This message is from the Lord .
32 This is what the Lord All-Powerful says:
“Disasters will soon spread
from country to country.
They will come like a powerful storm
to all the faraway places on earth!”
33 The dead bodies of those killed by the Lord will reach from one end of the earth to the other. No one will cry for them. No one will gather up their bodies and bury them. They will be left lying on the ground like dung.
34 Shepherds, you should be leading the sheep.
Start crying, you great leaders!
Roll around on the ground in pain, you leaders of the sheep.
It is now time for your slaughter.
You will be scattered everywhere, like pieces flying from a broken jar.
35 There will be no place for the shepherds to hide.
They will not escape.
36 I hear the shepherds shouting.
I hear the leaders of the sheep crying,
because the Lord is destroying their pastures.
37 Those peaceful pastures will be ruined
because of the Lord ’s anger.
38 He is like an angry lion that has left his cave.
And because of his terrible anger
and by the attacks of the enemy army,
their land will become an empty desert.
25 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, that was the first year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon;
2 The which Jeremiah the prophet spake unto all the people of Judah, and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying,
3 From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, even unto this day, that is the three and twentieth year, the word of the Lord hath come unto me, and I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye have not hearkened.
4 And the Lord hath sent unto you all his servants the prophets, rising early and sending them; but ye have not hearkened, nor inclined your ear to hear.
5 They said, Turn ye again now every one from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the Lord hath given unto you and to your fathers for ever and ever:
6 And go not after other gods to serve them, and to worship them, and provoke me not to anger with the works of your hands; and I will do you no hurt.
7 Yet ye have not hearkened unto me, saith the Lord ; that ye might provoke me to anger with the works of your hands to your own hurt.
8 Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts; Because ye have not heard my words,
9 Behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith the Lord , and Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabitants thereof, and against all these nations round about, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and an hissing, and perpetual desolations.
10 Moreover I will take from them the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the candle.
11 And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
12 And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the Lord , for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations.
13 And I will bring upon that land all my words which I have pronounced against it, even all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah hath prophesied against all the nations.
14 For many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of them also: and I will recompense them according to their deeds, and according to the works of their own hands.
15 For thus saith the Lord God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it.
16 And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them.
17 Then took I the cup at the Lord 's hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the Lord had sent me:
18 To wit, Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and the kings thereof, and the princes thereof, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, an hissing, and a curse; as it is this day;
19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people;
20 And all the mingled people, and all the kings of the land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, and Azzah, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod,
21 Edom, and Moab, and the children of Ammon,
22 And all the kings of Tyrus, and all the kings of Zidon, and the kings of the isles which are beyond the sea,
23 Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all that are in the utmost corners,
24 And all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mingled people that dwell in the desert,
25 And all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of the Medes,
26 And all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the world, which are upon the face of the earth: and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them.
27 Therefore thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Drink ye, and be drunken, and spue, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you.
28 And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink.
29 For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the Lord of hosts.
30 Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words, and say unto them, The Lord shall roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation; he shall mightily roar upon his habitation; he shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.
31 A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the Lord hath a controversy with the nations, he will plead with all flesh; he will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the Lord .
32 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.
33 And the slain of the Lord shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground.
34 Howl, ye shepherds, and cry; and wallow yourselves in the ashes, ye principal of the flock: for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are accomplished; and ye shall fall like a pleasant vessel.
35 And the shepherds shall have no way to flee, nor the principal of the flock to escape.
36 A voice of the cry of the shepherds, and an howling of the principal of the flock, shall be heard: for the Lord hath spoiled their pasture.
37 And the peaceable habitations are cut down because of the fierce anger of the Lord .
38 He hath forsaken his covert, as the lion: for their land is desolate because of the fierceness of the oppressor, and because of his fierce anger.
25 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah, in the ( A ) fourth year of ( B ) Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah (that was the ( C ) first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), 2 the word which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the ( D ) people of Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, 3 “From the ( E ) thirteenth year of ( F ) Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even to this day, [ a ] these ( G ) twenty-three years the word of the Lord has come to me, and I have spoken to you ( H ) again and again, but you have not listened. 4 And the Lord has sent to you all His ( I ) servants the prophets again and again, but you have not listened nor inclined your ear to hear, 5 saying, ‘ ( J ) Turn now, everyone from his evil way and from the evil of your deeds, and live on the land which the Lord has given to you and your forefathers ( K ) forever and ever; 6 and ( L ) do not follow other gods to [ b ] serve them and to [ c ] worship them, and do not provoke Me to anger with the work of your hands, then I will do you no harm.’ 7 Yet you have not listened to Me,” declares the Lord , “in order to ( M ) provoke Me to anger with the work of your hands to your own harm.
8 “Therefore this is what the Lord of armies says: ‘Because you have not obeyed My words, 9 behold, I will ( N ) send and take all the families of the north,’ declares the Lord , ‘and I will send to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, ( O ) My servant, and will bring them against this land and against its inhabitants and against all these surrounding nations; and I will [ d ] completely destroy them and ( P ) make them an object of horror and [ e ] hissing, and an everlasting place of ruins. 10 Moreover, I will ( Q ) eliminate from them the voice of jubilation and the voice of joy, the voice of the groom and the voice of the bride, the ( R ) sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp. 11 ( S ) This entire land will be a place of ruins and an object of horror, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon for ( T ) seventy years.
12 ‘Then it will be ( U ) when seventy years are completed I will ( V ) punish the king of Babylon and that nation,’ declares the Lord , ‘for their wrongdoing, and the land of the Chaldeans; and ( W ) I will make it an everlasting desolation. 13 I will bring upon that land all My words which I have pronounced against it, all that is written in ( X ) this book which Jeremiah has prophesied against ( Y ) all the nations. 14 ( [ f ] For ( Z ) many nations and great kings will make slaves of them, even them; and I will ( AA ) repay them according to their deeds and according to the work of their hands.)’”
15 For this is what the Lord , the God of Israel, says to me: “Take this ( AB ) cup of the wine of wrath from My hand and give it to all the nations to whom I send you, to drink from it . 16 Then they will ( AC ) drink and loudly vomit and act insanely because of the sword that I am going to send among them.”
17 So I took the cup from the Lord ’ s hand and ( AD ) gave it to all the nations to whom the Lord sent me, to drink from it : 18 To ( AE ) Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, and its kings and its officials, to make them places of ruins, objects of horror, [ g ] hissing, and a curse, as it is this day; 19 To ( AF ) Pharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his officials, and all his people; 20 and to all the ( AG ) foreign [ h ] people, all the kings of the ( AH ) land of Uz, all the kings of the land of the ( AI ) Philistines (that is, Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of ( AJ ) Ashdod); 21 To ( AK ) Edom, ( AL ) Moab, and the sons of ( AM ) Ammon; 22 and to all the kings of ( AN ) Tyre, all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of ( AO ) the coastlands which are beyond the sea; 23 and to ( AP ) Dedan, Tema, ( AQ ) Buz, and all who ( AR ) trim the corners of their hair ; 24 and to all the kings of ( AS ) Arabia and all the kings of the ( AT ) foreign [ i ] people who live in the desert; 25 and to all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of ( AU ) Elam, and all the kings of ( AV ) Media; 26 and to all the kings of the north, near and far, one with another; and ( AW ) all the kingdoms of the earth which are on the face of the ground; and the king of [ j ] ( AX ) Sheshach shall drink it after them.
27 “And you shall say to them, ‘This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: “ ( AY ) Drink, be drunk, vomit, fall down, and do not get up, because of the ( AZ ) sword which I am sending among you.”’ 28 And if they ( BA ) refuse to take the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘This is what the Lord of armies says: “ ( BB ) You shall certainly drink! 29 For behold, I am ( BC ) beginning to inflict disaster on this city which is ( BD ) called by My name, so should you be completely free from punishment? You will not be free from punishment, for ( BE ) I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth,” declares the Lord of armies.’
30 “Therefore you shall prophesy against them all these words, and you shall say to them,
‘The ( BF ) Lord will ( BG ) roar from on high
And raise His voice from His holy dwelling;
He will roar forcefully against His [ k ] fold.
He will shout like those who tread the grapes ,
Against all the inhabitants of the earth.
31 A clamor has come to the end of the earth,
Because the Lord has ( BH ) a controversy with the nations.
He is entering into ( BI ) judgment with [ l ] humanity;
As for the wicked, He has turned them over to the sword,’ declares the Lord .”
32 This is what the Lord of armies says:
“Behold, evil is going out
From ( BJ ) nation to nation,
And a great ( BK ) storm is being stirred up
From the remotest parts of the earth.
33 “Those ( BL ) put to death by the Lord on that day will be from one end of the earth to the [ m ] other. They will ( BM ) not be mourned, gathered, or buried; they will be like ( BN ) dung on the face of the ground.
34 Wail, you shepherds, and cry out;
( BO ) Wallow in the dust , you masters of the flock;
For the days of your ( BP ) slaughter and your dispersions [ n ] have come,
And you will fall like a precious vessel.
35 [ o ] There will be ( BQ ) no sanctuary for the shepherds,
Nor escape for the masters of the flock.
36 Hear the sound of the cry of the shepherds,
And the wailing of the masters of the flock!
For the Lord is destroying their pasture,
37 And the peaceful ( BR ) grazing places are devastated
Because of the ( BS ) fierce anger of the Lord .
38 He has left His hiding place ( BT ) like the lion;
For their land has become a horror
Because of the fierceness of the [ p ] oppressing sword
And because of His fierce anger.”
25 The word came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim ( A ) son of Josiah king of Judah, which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar ( B ) king of Babylon. 2 So Jeremiah the prophet said to all the people of Judah ( C ) and to all those living in Jerusalem: 3 For twenty-three years—from the thirteenth year of Josiah ( D ) son of Amon king of Judah until this very day—the word of the Lord has come to me and I have spoken to you again and again, ( E ) but you have not listened. ( F )
4 And though the Lord has sent all his servants the prophets ( G ) to you again and again, you have not listened or paid any attention. ( H ) 5 They said, “Turn ( I ) now, each of you, from your evil ways and your evil practices, and you can stay in the land ( J ) the Lord gave to you and your ancestors for ever and ever. 6 Do not follow other gods ( K ) to serve and worship them; do not arouse my anger with what your hands have made. Then I will not harm you.”
7 “But you did not listen to me,” declares the Lord , “and you have aroused ( L ) my anger with what your hands have made, ( M ) and you have brought harm ( N ) to yourselves.”
8 Therefore the Lord Almighty says this: “Because you have not listened to my words, 9 I will summon ( O ) all the peoples of the north ( P ) and my servant ( Q ) Nebuchadnezzar ( R ) king of Babylon,” declares the Lord , “and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all the surrounding nations. I will completely destroy [ a ] ( S ) them and make them an object of horror and scorn, ( T ) and an everlasting ruin. ( U ) 10 I will banish from them the sounds ( V ) of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom, ( W ) the sound of millstones ( X ) and the light of the lamp. ( Y ) 11 This whole country will become a desolate wasteland, ( Z ) and these nations will serve ( AA ) the king of Babylon seventy years. ( AB )
12 “But when the seventy years ( AC ) are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon ( AD ) and his nation, the land of the Babylonians, [ b ] for their guilt,” declares the Lord , “and will make it desolate ( AE ) forever. 13 I will bring on that land all the things I have spoken against it, all that are written ( AF ) in this book and prophesied by Jeremiah against all the nations. 14 They themselves will be enslaved ( AG ) by many nations ( AH ) and great kings; I will repay ( AI ) them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.”
15 This is what the Lord , the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup ( AJ ) filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send ( AK ) you drink it. 16 When they drink ( AL ) it, they will stagger ( AM ) and go mad ( AN ) because of the sword ( AO ) I will send among them.”
17 So I took the cup from the Lord ’s hand and made all the nations to whom he sent ( AP ) me drink it: 18 Jerusalem ( AQ ) and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a ruin ( AR ) and an object of horror and scorn, ( AS ) a curse [ c ] ( AT ) —as they are today; ( AU ) 19 Pharaoh king ( AV ) of Egypt, ( AW ) his attendants, his officials and all his people, 20 and all the foreign people there; all the kings of Uz; ( AX ) all the kings of the Philistines ( AY ) (those of Ashkelon, ( AZ ) Gaza, ( BA ) Ekron, and the people left at Ashdod); 21 Edom, ( BB ) Moab ( BC ) and Ammon; ( BD ) 22 all the kings of Tyre ( BE ) and Sidon; ( BF ) the kings of the coastlands ( BG ) across the sea; 23 Dedan, ( BH ) Tema, ( BI ) Buz ( BJ ) and all who are in distant places [ d ] ; ( BK ) 24 all the kings of Arabia ( BL ) and all the kings of the foreign people ( BM ) who live in the wilderness; 25 all the kings of Zimri, ( BN ) Elam ( BO ) and Media; ( BP ) 26 and all the kings of the north, ( BQ ) near and far, one after the other—all the kingdoms ( BR ) on the face of the earth. And after all of them, the king of Sheshak [ e ] ( BS ) will drink it too.
27 “Then tell them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Drink, get drunk ( BT ) and vomit, and fall to rise no more because of the sword ( BU ) I will send among you.’ 28 But if they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink ( BV ) , tell them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: You must drink it! 29 See, I am beginning to bring disaster ( BW ) on the city that bears my Name, ( BX ) and will you indeed go unpunished? ( BY ) You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword ( BZ ) on all ( CA ) who live on the earth, ( CB ) declares the Lord Almighty.’
30 “Now prophesy all these words against them and say to them:
“‘The Lord will roar ( CC ) from on high;
he will thunder ( CD ) from his holy dwelling ( CE )
and roar mightily against his land.
He will shout like those who tread ( CF ) the grapes,
shout against all who live on the earth.
31 The tumult ( CG ) will resound to the ends of the earth,
for the Lord will bring charges ( CH ) against the nations;
he will bring judgment ( CI ) on all ( CJ ) mankind
and put the wicked to the sword, ( CK ) ’”
declares the Lord .
32 This is what the Lord Almighty says:
“Look! Disaster ( CL ) is spreading
from nation to nation; ( CM )
a mighty storm ( CN ) is rising
from the ends of the earth.” ( CO )
33 At that time those slain ( CP ) by the Lord will be everywhere—from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be mourned or gathered ( CQ ) up or buried, ( CR ) but will be like dung lying on the ground.
34 Weep and wail, you shepherds; ( CS )
roll ( CT ) in the dust, you leaders of the flock.
For your time to be slaughtered ( CU ) has come;
you will fall like the best of the rams. [ f ] ( CV )
35 The shepherds will have nowhere to flee,
the leaders of the flock no place to escape. ( CW )
36 Hear the cry ( CX ) of the shepherds, ( CY )
the wailing of the leaders of the flock,
for the Lord is destroying their pasture.
37 The peaceful meadows will be laid waste
because of the fierce anger of the Lord .
38 Like a lion ( CZ ) he will leave his lair,
and their land will become desolate ( DA )
because of the sword [ g ] of the oppressor ( DB )
and because of the Lord ’s fierce anger. ( DC )
