Isaiah 52

God will make Jerusalem safe again [ a ]

52 Wake up, Zion!
Be ready to show your strength!
Jerusalem, God's holy city,
Put on your beautiful clothes!
Foreign people who do not serve God
will not attack your city again.
2 Shake off the dirt, Jerusalem!
Get up and sit on your throne.
People of Zion, you are no longer prisoners,
so take the chains off your neck.

3 This is what the Lord says to you:

‘I received no money when I sold you.
And I will not pay anything to make you free again.’

4 The Almighty Lord says,

‘Long ago, my people went to live for some time in Egypt.
At a later time, Assyria's army was cruel to them.
5 But now, what is happening?
An enemy has taken my people away as slaves,
for no good reason. [ b ]
Their leaders boast loudly,
and they insult me all the time.
6 So I will cause my people to know my name.
When all this happens, they will know
that I am the God who speaks to them.
I tell them that I am with them.’

7 Somebody is coming across the mountains
to bring good news to us!
It is a beautiful thing to see him run towards us!
He has come to tell us that there will be peace,
because God will save our city.
He says to Zion,
‘Your God rules as king!’
8 Listen! The guards on the city's walls are shouting!
They all shout together with joy!
They can see for themselves
that the Lord is returning to Zion.
9 Jerusalem, your buildings have become heaps of stones,
but now you can all shout together with joy!
Sing aloud, because the Lord has comforted his people.
He has made Jerusalem safe again.
10 The Lord has shown all the nations how strong he is.
They can all see his holy power.
People all over the world will know
that our God has rescued his people.
11 Leave! Leave! Go out from there. [ c ]
Do not touch anything that is unclean.
Leave that foreign place!
The people who carry the Lord 's special things
must keep themselves pure.
12 But you will not have to hurry and run away.
No, the Lord , Israel's God, will keep you safe.
He will lead you at the front,
and he will be your guard at the back.

The Lord 's Servant

13 Look! My servant will do well.
He will move up to a high place
where people will honour him as great.
14 At one time, when people saw him,
they were very upset.
His body became completely spoiled,
so that he no longer seemed to be a man.
He did not seem to have a human body.
15 But now, he will cause the people in many nations
to be very surprised!
Kings will have nothing to say
when they see how great he is.
They will see something new
that nobody had told them about.
They will understand new things
that they had not heard about before.

Footnotes

  1. 52:1 The special city of God's people is called both ‘Jerusalem’ and ‘Zion’.
  2. 52:5 ‘for no good reason’ or ‘without paying for them’
  3. 52:11 The people will leave Babylon, where they have been in exile. They will leave the foreign land and they will return to Jerusalem.

Israel Will Be Saved

52 Wake up! Wake up!
Zion, clothe yourself with strength.
Holy city of Jerusalem, stand up
and put on your beautiful clothes!
Those filthy foreigners [ a ] will not enter you again.
2 Jerusalem, get up and shake off the dust!
Daughter Zion, [ b ] you were a prisoner,
but take the chains off your neck.
3 The Lord says,
“You were not sold for money.
So I will not use money to set you free.”

4 The Lord God says, “First, my people went down to Egypt and became slaves. Then Assyria made them slaves. 5 Now look what has happened. Another nation has taken my people,” says the Lord . “That country did not pay to take my people, but they rule over them and laugh at them, and they say bad things about me all the time.” The Lord is the one saying these things.

6 “This happened so that my people will learn about me. My people will know who I am. My people will know my name, and they will know that I Am He [ c ] is speaking to them.”

7 How wonderful it is to see someone coming over the hills to tell good news. How wonderful to hear him announce, “There is peace! We have been saved!” and to hear him say to Zion, “Your God is the king!”

8 The city guards [ d ] are shouting.
They are all rejoicing together.
They can all see the Lord returning to Zion.

9 Ruins of Jerusalem, be happy again!
Rejoice because the Lord
comforted his people and set Jerusalem free.
10 The Lord showed his holy strength to all the nations.
All the faraway countries saw how God saved his people.

11 So leave Babylon!
Leave that place!
Priests, you carry the things that belong to the Lord .
So make yourselves pure.
Don’t touch anything that is not pure.
12 You will leave Babylon,
but they will not force you to leave in a hurry.
You will not be forced to run away.
The Lord will be in front of you.
The God of Israel will be behind you. [ e ]

God’s Suffering Servant

13 The Lord says, “Look, my servant will succeed in what he has to do, and he will be raised to a position of high honor. 14 It is true that many were shocked when they saw him. He was beaten so badly that he no longer looked like a man. 15 But it is also true that many nations will be amazed at him. Kings will look at him and be unable to speak. They will see what they had never been told. They will understand what they had never heard. [ f ]

Footnotes

  1. Isaiah 52:1 filthy foreigners Or “unclean men that have not been circumcised.”
  2. Isaiah 52:2 Daughter Zion Another name for Jerusalem.
  3. Isaiah 52:6 I Am He This is like Yahweh , the Hebrew name for God. It shows that God lives forever, and that he is always with his people. See Ex. 3:13-17.
  4. Isaiah 52:8 guards Men who stand on the city walls and watch for messengers or trouble coming to the city. Here, this probably means the prophets.
  5. Isaiah 52:12 The Lord … behind you This shows that God will protect his people. Compare Ex. 14:19, 20.
  6. Isaiah 52:15 They will see … heard Or “Those who were not told the message saw what happened. Those who did not hear understood.”

52 Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean.

2 Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion.

3 For thus saith the Lord , Ye have sold yourselves for nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money.

4 For thus saith the Lord God , My people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there; and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.

5 Now therefore, what have I here, saith the Lord , that my people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, saith the Lord ; and my name continually every day is blasphemed.

6 Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I.

7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

8 Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the Lord shall bring again Zion.

9 Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the Lord hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem.

10 The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

11 Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the Lord .

12 For ye shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight: for the Lord will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your reward.

13 Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.

14 As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

15 So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.

Cheer for Prostrate Zion

52 ( A ) Awake, awake,
Clothe yourself in your strength, Zion;
Clothe yourself with your ( B ) beautiful garments,
Jerusalem, the ( C ) holy city;
For the uncircumcised and the ( D ) unclean
Will no longer come into you.
2 Shake yourself ( E ) from the dust, ( F ) rise up,
Captive Jerusalem;
( G ) Release yourself from the chains around your neck,
Captive daughter of Zion.

3 For this is what the Lord says: “You were ( H ) sold for nothing, and you will be ( I ) redeemed ( J ) without money.” 4 For this is what the Lord [ a ] God says: “My people ( K ) went down to Egypt first to reside there; then the Assyrian oppressed them without reason. 5 And now, what do I have here,” declares the Lord , “seeing that My people have been taken away without reason?” Again the Lord declares, “Those who rule over them howl, and My ( L ) name is continually reviled all day long. 6 Therefore, My people shall ( M ) know My name; therefore on that day I am the one who is speaking, ‘Here I am.’”

7 How delightful on the mountains
Are the feet of one who brings ( N ) good news,
Who announces [ b ] peace
And brings good news of [ c ] happiness,
Who announces salvation,
And says to Zion, “Your ( O ) God [ d ] reigns!”
8 Listen! Your watchmen raise their ( P ) voices,
They shout joyfully together;
For they will see [ e ] with their own eyes
When the Lord restores Zion.
9 ( Q ) Be cheerful, shout joyfully together,
You ( R ) ruins of Jerusalem;
For the Lord has comforted His people,
He has ( S ) redeemed Jerusalem.
10 The Lord has bared His holy ( T ) arm
In the sight of all the nations,
[ f ] So that ( U ) all the ends of the earth may see
The salvation of our God.

11 ( V ) Depart, depart, go out from there,
( W ) Do not touch what is unclean;
Go out of the midst of her, ( X ) purify yourselves,
You who carry the vessels of the Lord .
12 But you will not go out in ( Y ) a hurry,
Nor will you go [ g ] as fugitives;
For the ( Z ) Lord will go before you,
And ( AA ) the God of Israel will be your rear guard.

The Exalted Servant

13 Behold, My ( AB ) Servant will prosper,
He will be high and lifted up and [ h ] greatly ( AC ) exalted.
14 Just as many were appalled at you, My people ,
So His ( AD ) appearance was marred beyond that of a man,
And His form beyond the sons of mankind.
15 So [ i ] He will ( AE ) sprinkle many nations,
Kings will ( AF ) shut their mouths on account of Him;
For ( AG ) what they had not been told, they will see,
And what they had not heard, they will understand.

or go in flight;
for the Lord will go before you, ( AR )
the God of Israel will be your rear guard. ( AS )

The Suffering and Glory of the Servant

he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted. ( AU )
14 Just as there were many who were appalled ( AV ) at him [ c ]
his appearance was so disfigured ( AW ) beyond that of any human being
and his form marred beyond human likeness ( AX )
15 so he will sprinkle ( AY ) many nations, [ d ]
and kings ( AZ ) will shut their mouths ( BA ) because of him.
For what they were not told, they will see,
and what they have not heard, they will understand. ( BB )
