Genesis 25

Abraham dies

25 Abraham then married another woman. Her name was Keturah. 2 She gave birth to Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah. 3 Jokshan later became the father of Sheba and Dedan. The descendants of Dedan were the Asshurites, the Letushites and the Leummites. 4 Midian had sons who were called Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida and Eldaah. All those were descendants of Abraham's wife, Keturah. 5 When Abraham died, he left everything that belonged to him to Isaac. 6 But while he was still alive, he gave gifts to the sons of his slave wives. He sent these sons away to the land of the east. He wanted to keep them far away from Isaac.

7 Abraham lived for 175 years. 8 He died after a good and long life, when he was very old. He joined his ancestors who had died before him. 9 His sons, Isaac and Ishmael, buried his body in the cave of Machpelah. That was near Mamre. The cave is in the field that belonged to Zohar's son, Ephron. He was a Hittite. 10 Abraham had bought the field from the Hittites.

So they buried Abraham there. It was in the cave where his wife, Sarah, had also been buried.

11 After Abraham's death, God blessed his son, Isaac. Isaac was living near Beer Lahai Roi.

Ishmael's family

12 This is the report about Abraham's son, Ishmael, and his family.

Sarah's female servant gave birth to Ishmael. Her name was Hagar. She was from Egypt. 13 These are the names of Ishmael's sons. The list starts from the firstborn son and ends with the last son. Nebaioth was the first son of Ishmael. Then there were Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah. 16 These were all Ishmael's sons. Their names became the names of 12 groups of people. They separated and lived in their own lands. Ishmael's sons ruled over the 12 groups of people. 17 Ishmael lived for 137 years then he died. He joined his ancestors who had died before him. 18 Ishmael's descendants lived in the lands from Havilah to Shur. These are near Egypt, towards Asshur. They were always at war with each other. Jacob and Esau

19 This is the report about Abraham's son, Isaac, and his family.

Abraham became the father of Isaac. 20 When Isaac was 40 years old, he married Rebekah. Rebekah was the daughter of Bethuel. Bethuel was an Aramean from Paddan Aram. She was the sister of Laban the Aramean. 21 Rebekah could not have children. So Isaac prayed to the Lord for Rebekah. The Lord did as Isaac asked. And Isaac's wife, Rebekah, became pregnant. 22 The babies inside her were fighting with each other. Rebekah said, ‘Why is this happening to me?’ So Rebekah went to ask the Lord . 23 The Lord said to Rebekah, ‘The two children who are in your body will become two separate nations of people. One group will be stronger than the other. The older son will become a servant to the younger son.’ [ b ]

24 The time came for Rebekah to give birth. There were two babies inside her. 25 The first baby to come out had a red body. Hair covered the whole of his body. They called him Esau. 26 After this, his brother came out. His hand was holding the back of Esau's foot. They called him Jacob. Isaac was 60 years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.

27 Time passed and the boys grew. Esau became a good hunter, out in the fields. Jacob was a quiet man. He stayed near to the tents. 28 Isaac liked to eat the meat from the animals that Esau killed. So he loved Esau. But Rebekah loved Jacob.

29 One day, Jacob was cooking a meal. Esau came back from the country. He was very hungry. 30 He said to Jacob ‘Quick, let me have some of that red food! I am very hungry.’ (That is why he was also called Edom.) [ c ] 31 Jacob said, ‘You must first sell me your birthright.’ [ d ]

32 Esau said, ‘Look, I am so hungry that I will die. Then my birthright will not help me at all!’

33 Jacob said, ‘First, make a serious promise to me.’ So Esau promised to sell his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and the soup made from grains. Esau ate the food and he drank. Then he got up and he left.

In that way, Esau showed that he did not think that his birthright was important. [ e ]

Footnotes

  1. 25:18 The Lord had told Hagar about this in Genesis 16:12 .
  2. 25:23 At that time, the youngest son would always be a servant to the oldest son. But this time, God chose the youngest son to be master over the oldest son.
  3. 25:30 Edom means red.
  4. 25:31 In the Old Testament, the oldest son had the birthright. This means that he would be the leader of his family when his father died. And he would get two parts of the things that had belonged to his father.
  5. 25:34 Now Jacob had the birthright. Jacob was the younger son. Jacob would receive God's promise that he had made with Abraham. This promise was also for Isaac. When Isaac died, it would pass to Jacob. This is what God had told Rebekah. See verse 23.

Abraham’s Family

25 Abraham married again. His new wife was named Keturah. 2 She gave birth to Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. 3 Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. The people of Asshur, [ a ] Leum, and Letush were descendants of Dedan. 4 The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these sons came from the marriage of Abraham and Keturah. 5-6 Before Abraham died, he gave some gifts to his sons who were from his slave women. He sent them to the East, [ b ] away from Isaac. Then Abraham gave everything he owned to Isaac.

7 Abraham lived to be 175 years old. 8 Then he grew weak and died. He had lived a long and satisfying life. He died and went to be with his people. 9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah. This cave is in the field of Ephron, the son of Zohar. It was east of Mamre. 10 This is the same cave that Abraham bought from the Hittites. He was buried there with his wife Sarah. 11 After Abraham died, God blessed Isaac. Isaac was living at Beer Lahai Roi.

12 This is the list of Ishmael’s family. Ishmael was Abraham and Hagar’s son. (Hagar was Sarah’s Egyptian maid.) 13 These are the names of Ishmael’s sons: The first son was Nebaioth; then Kedar was born, then Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. 16 These were the names of Ishmael’s sons. Each son had his own camp that became a small town. The twelve sons were leaders over their own people. 17 Ishmael lived to be 137 years old. Then he died and went to be with his people. 18 His descendants settled throughout the desert area from Havilah to Shur. This area begins near Egypt and goes toward Assyria. Ishmael’s people were often at war with [ c ] the other descendants of Abraham.

Isaac’s Family

19 This is the story of Isaac. Abraham had a son named Isaac. 20 When Isaac was 40 years old, he married Rebekah. Rebekah was from Paddan Aram. She was Bethuel’s daughter and the sister of Laban the Aramean. 21 Isaac’s wife could not have children. So Isaac prayed to the Lord for her. The Lord heard Isaac’s prayer, and he allowed Rebekah to become pregnant.

22 While Rebekah was pregnant, the babies inside her struggled with one another. She prayed to the Lord and said, “What is happening to me?” 23 The Lord said to her,

“The leaders of two nations are in your body.
Two nations will come from you,
and they will be divided.
One of them will be stronger,
and the older will serve the younger.”

24 When the right time came, Rebekah gave birth to twins. 25 The first baby was red. His skin was like a hairy robe. So he was named Esau. [ d ] 26 When the second baby was born, he was holding tightly to Esau’s heel. So that baby was named Jacob. [ e ] Isaac was 60 years old when Jacob and Esau were born.

27 The boys grew up. Esau became a skilled hunter, who loved to be out in the fields. But Jacob was a quiet man, who stayed at home. 28 Isaac loved Esau. He liked to eat the animals Esau killed. But Rebekah loved Jacob.

29 One day Esau came back from hunting. He was tired and weak from hunger. Jacob was boiling a pot of beans. 30 So Esau said to Jacob, “I am weak with hunger. Let me have some of that red soup.” (That is why people call him “Red.” [ f ] )

31 But Jacob said, “You must sell me your rights as the firstborn son.”

32 Esau said, “I am almost dead with hunger, so what good are these rights to me now?”

33 But Jacob said, “First, promise me that you will give them to me.” So Esau made an oath to him and sold his rights as the firstborn son to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil [ g ] soup. Esau ate the food, had something to drink, and then left. So Esau showed that he did not care about his rights as the firstborn son.

25 Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah.

2 And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah.

3 And Jokshan begat Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim.

4 And the sons of Midian; Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abidah, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.

5 And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac.

6 But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.

7 And these are the days of the years of Abraham's life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years.

8 Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.

9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre;

10 The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth: there was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.

11 And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac dwelt by the well Lahairoi.

12 Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's handmaid, bare unto Abraham:

13 And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam,

14 And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa,

15 Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah:

16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations.

17 And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people.

18 And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria: and he died in the presence of all his brethren.

19 And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham begat Isaac:

20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.

21 And Isaac intreated the Lord for his wife, because she was barren: and the Lord was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.

22 And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the Lord .

23 And the Lord said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.

24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.

26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.

27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.

28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.

29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:

30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.

31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.

32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.

34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

Abraham’s Death

25 Now Abraham took another wife, [ a ] whose name was Keturah. 2 ( A ) She bore to him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. 3 Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. 4 The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All of these were the sons of Keturah. 5 ( B ) Now Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac; 6 but to the sons of [ b ] his concubines, Abraham gave gifts while he was still living, and ( C ) sent them away from his son Isaac eastward, to the land of the east.

7 These are [ c ] all the years of Abraham’s life that he lived, ( D ) 175 years. 8 Abraham breathed his last and died ( E ) at a good old age, an old man and satisfied with life ; and he was ( F ) gathered to his people. 9 Then his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in ( G ) the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, facing Mamre, 10 ( H ) the field which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth; there Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah. 11 It came about after the death of Abraham, that ( I ) God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac [ d ] lived by ( J ) Beer-lahai-roi.

Descendants of Ishmael

12 Now these are the records of the generations of ( K ) Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s slave woman, bore to Abraham; 13 and these are the names of ( L ) the sons of Ishmael, by their names, [ e ] in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. 16 These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages, and by their camps; ( M ) twelve princes according to their [ f ] tribes. 17 These are the years of the life of Ishmael, ( N ) 137 years; and he breathed his last and died, and was ( O ) gathered to his people. 18 They [ g ] settled from ( P ) Havilah to ( Q ) Shur which is [ h ] east of Egypt [ i ] going toward Assyria; ( R ) he [ j ] settled in defiance of all his relatives.

Isaac’s Sons

19 Now these are the records of ( S ) the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham fathered Isaac; 20 and Isaac was forty years old when he took ( T ) Rebekah, the ( U ) daughter of Bethuel the [ k ] Aramean of Paddan-aram, the ( V ) sister of Laban the [ l ] Aramean, to be his wife. 21 Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was unable to have children; and ( W ) the Lord [ m ] answered him, and his wife Rebekah ( X ) conceived. 22 But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If it is so, why am I in this condition ?” So she went to ( Y ) inquire of the Lord . 23 And the Lord said to her,

( Z ) Two nations are in your womb;
( AA ) And two peoples will be separated from your body;
And one people will be stronger than the other;
And ( AB ) the older will serve the younger.”

24 When her days leading to the delivery were at an end, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25 Now the first came out red, ( AC ) all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau. 26 Afterward his brother came out with ( AD ) his hand holding on to Esau’s heel, so ( AE ) he was named [ n ] Jacob; and Isaac was ( AF ) sixty years old when she gave birth to them.

27 When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field; but Jacob was a [ o ] civilized man, ( AG ) living in tents. 28 Now Isaac loved Esau because [ p ] he had ( AH ) a taste for game; ( AI ) but Rebekah loved Jacob. 29 When Jacob had cooked a ( AJ ) stew one day , Esau came in from the field and he was exhausted; 30 and Esau said to Jacob, “Please let me have a mouthful of [ q ] that red stuff there, for I am exhausted.” Therefore he was called [ r ] Edom by name. 31 But Jacob said, “ [ s ] First sell me your ( AK ) birthright.” 32 Esau said, “Look, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?” 33 And Jacob said, “ [ t ] First swear to me”; so he swore an oath to him, and ( AL ) sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and got up and went on his way. So Esau despised his birthright.

The Death of Abraham ( A )

25 Abraham had taken another wife, whose name was Keturah. 2 She bore him Zimran, ( B ) Jokshan, Medan, Midian, ( C ) Ishbak and Shuah. ( D ) 3 Jokshan was the father of Sheba ( E ) and Dedan; ( F ) the descendants of Dedan were the Ashurites, the Letushites and the Leummites. 4 The sons of Midian were Ephah, ( G ) Epher, Hanok, Abida and Eldaah. All these were descendants of Keturah.

5 Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac. ( H ) 6 But while he was still living, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines ( I ) and sent them away from his son Isaac ( J ) to the land of the east. ( K )

7 Abraham lived a hundred and seventy-five years. ( L ) 8 Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, ( M ) an old man and full of years; and he was gathered to his people. ( N ) 9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him ( O ) in the cave of Machpelah ( P ) near Mamre, ( Q ) in the field of Ephron ( R ) son of Zohar the Hittite, ( S ) 10 the field Abraham had bought from the Hittites. [ a ] ( T ) There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah. 11 After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac, ( U ) who then lived near Beer Lahai Roi. ( V )

Ishmael’s Sons ( W )

12 This is the account ( X ) of the family line of Abraham’s son Ishmael, whom Sarah’s slave, Hagar ( Y ) the Egyptian, bore to Abraham. ( Z )

13 These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth ( AA ) the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar, ( AB ) Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, ( AC ) Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, ( AD ) Jetur, ( AE ) Naphish and Kedemah. 16 These were the sons of Ishmael, and these are the names of the twelve tribal rulers ( AF ) according to their settlements and camps. ( AG ) 17 Ishmael lived a hundred and thirty-seven years. He breathed his last and died, and he was gathered to his people. ( AH ) 18 His descendants ( AI ) settled in the area from Havilah to Shur, ( AJ ) near the eastern border of Egypt, as you go toward Ashur. And they lived in hostility toward [ b ] all the tribes related to them. ( AK )

Jacob and Esau

19 This is the account ( AL ) of the family line of Abraham’s son Isaac.

Abraham became the father of Isaac, 20 and Isaac was forty years old ( AM ) when he married Rebekah ( AN ) daughter of Bethuel ( AO ) the Aramean from Paddan Aram [ c ] ( AP ) and sister of Laban ( AQ ) the Aramean. ( AR )

21 Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was childless. ( AS ) The Lord answered his prayer, ( AT ) and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. 22 The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord . ( AU )

23 The Lord said to her,

“Two nations ( AV ) are in your womb,
and two peoples from within you will be separated;
one people will be stronger than the other,
and the older will serve the younger. ( AW )

24 When the time came for her to give birth, ( AX ) there were twin boys in her womb. ( AY ) 25 The first to come out was red, ( AZ ) and his whole body was like a hairy garment; ( BA ) so they named him Esau. [ d ] ( BB ) 26 After this, his brother came out, ( BC ) with his hand grasping Esau’s heel; ( BD ) so he was named Jacob. [ e ] ( BE ) Isaac was sixty years old ( BF ) when Rebekah gave birth to them.

27 The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter, ( BG ) a man of the open country, ( BH ) while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents. 28 Isaac, who had a taste for wild game, ( BI ) loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob. ( BJ )

29 Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, ( BK ) Esau came in from the open country, ( BL ) famished. 30 He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! ( BM ) I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom. [ f ] ) ( BN )

31 Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright. ( BO )

32 “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”

33 But Jacob said, “Swear ( BP ) to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright ( BQ ) to Jacob.

34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. ( BR ) He ate and drank, and then got up and left.

So Esau despised his birthright.
