Genesis 12

Abram leaves Haran

12 The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Leave your country and the people of your father's family. Go to the land that I will show you. [ a ]

2 I will cause your descendants to become a great nation. I will bless you. Everyone will know your name. You will bring my blessing to other people. 3 I will bless those people who bless you. But I will curse anyone who insults you. Through you, I will bless all the families of people on the earth.’ [ b ]

4 Abram did what the Lord had told him. He left Haran. Abram was 75 years old when he left Haran. Lot went with him. 5 Abram took his wife Sarai, and his nephew Lot. He took everything that belonged to them. He also took the people that worked for them in Haran. They all left to go to the land of Canaan.

When they arrived in Canaan, 6 Abram walked through the land. He went as far as Shechem, to the special oak tree of Moreh. At that time, Canaanites lived in this land. 7 The Lord appeared to Abram there. He said, ‘I will give this land to your descendants.’ So Abram built an altar in that place to worship the Lord . [ c ] He did that because the Lord had appeared to him.

8 Then Abram left Shechem. He went to the hills that are on the east of Bethel. He put up his tent in that place. Bethel was towards the west, and Ai was towards the east. Abram also built an altar there to worship the Lord .

9 Then Abram took his tent and he left that place. He continued to travel towards the Negev. [ d ]

Abram and Sarai in Egypt

10 There was a famine in the land of Canaan. So Abram went to live in Egypt for some time, because the famine was very bad. [ e ]

11 When Abram came near to Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, ‘Listen to me. I know that you are a very beautiful woman. 12 When the Egyptians see you they will say, “This is Abram's wife.” Then they will kill me, but they will let you live. [ f ] 13 So tell them that you are my sister. Then they will do good things to me, because they want to please you. They will not kill me because they will think that you are my sister.’

14 When Abram arrived in Egypt, the people saw that Sarai was a very beautiful woman. 15 The king's officers saw her. They told Pharaoh that she was very beautiful. They took her to the king's palace. [ g ]

16 Pharaoh did good things to help Abram because of Sarai. He gave Abram sheep, cows, donkeys and camels. He also gave Abram male servants and female servants.

17 But the Lord made Pharaoh and the people in his palace very ill. The Lord did this because the king had taken Abram's wife Sarai. 18 So Pharaoh called Abram to come to him. Pharaoh said, ‘You have done this bad thing to me! You did not tell me that Sarai is your wife! Why not? 19 You told me “She is my sister”. As a result, I took her to be my wife. Now, here is your wife. Take her and go away!’

20 Pharaoh told his officers what to do with Abram. They sent Abram away, with his wife and everything that belonged to them.

Footnotes

  1. 12:1 The Lord had said this to Abram when he lived in Ur, among the Chaldeans. See Joshua 24:2 .
  2. 12:3 Jesus Christ is a descendant of Abram. Through Jesus, God blesses all the nations and families of people on the earth.
  3. 12:7 The Canaanites did not worship God. The oak tree of Moreh was a place where the Canaanites worshipped false gods. Abram built an altar to worship God. The Canaanites would see that Abram worshipped the Lord . But Abram was not afraid. He knew that this place belonged to God.
  4. 12:9 The Negev is a dry land. It is between Egypt and Canaan.
  5. 12:10 Egypt did not often have a famine because the River Nile went through the land.
  6. 12:12 Abram thinks that the king of Egypt might want to take Sarai as one of his wives. If he knows that Sarai is Abram's wife, the king will have to kill Abram.
  7. 12:15 A palace is a large house for a king.

God Calls Abram

12 The Lord said to Abram, “Leave your country and your people. Leave your father’s family and go to the country that I will show you.

2 I will build a great nation from you.
I will bless you
and make your name famous.
People will use your name
to bless other people.
3 I will bless those who bless you,
and I will curse those who curse you.
I will use you to bless
all the people on earth.”

Abram Goes to Canaan

4 So Abram left Haran just like the Lord said, and Lot went with him. Abram was 75 years old when he left Haran. 5 He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the slaves, and all the other things he had gotten in Haran. Then he and his group moved to the land of Canaan. 6 Abram traveled through the land as far as the town of Shechem and then to the big tree at Moreh. The Canaanites were living in the land at that time.

7 The Lord appeared [ a ] to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your descendants.”

Abram built an altar to honor the Lord who appeared to him there. 8 Then he left that place and traveled to the mountains east of Bethel. He set up his tent there. Bethel was to the west, and Ai [ b ] was to the east. Abram built another altar at that place to honor the Lord , and he worshiped the Lord there. 9 Then he moved on toward the Negev, stopping for a time at several places on the way.

Abram in Egypt

10 During this time there was not enough food in the land, so Abram went down to Egypt to live. 11 Just before they arrived in Egypt, Abram told Sarai, “Look, I know that you are a very beautiful woman. 12 When the Egyptian men see you, they will say, ‘This woman is his wife.’ Then they will kill me and keep you alive because they want you. 13 So tell them that you are my sister. Then they will be good to me because of you. In this way you will save my life.”

14 So when Abram went into Egypt, the Egyptian men saw that Sarai was a very beautiful woman. 15 Even some of Pharaoh’s officials noticed her and told Pharaoh how beautiful she was. So they took her to Pharaoh’s house. 16 Pharaoh was kind to Abram because he thought Abram was Sarai’s brother. He gave Abram sheep, cattle, donkeys, camels, and men and women servants.

17 Pharaoh took Abram’s wife, so the Lord caused Pharaoh and all the people in his house to have very bad diseases. 18 Pharaoh called Abram and said to him, “You have done a very bad thing to me! Why didn’t you tell me Sarai was your wife? 19 You said, ‘She is my sister.’ Why did you say that? I took her so that she could be my wife, but now I give your wife back to you. Take her and go!” 20 Then Pharaoh commanded his men to lead Abram out of Egypt. So Abram and his wife left that place and took everything they had with them.

Footnotes

  1. Genesis 12:7 The Lord appeared God often used special shapes so that people could see him. Sometimes he was like a man, an angel, a fire, or a bright light.
  2. Genesis 12:8 Ai The name of this town means “the ruins.”

12 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

4 So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.

5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.

6 And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.

7 And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the Lord , who appeared unto him.

8 And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the Lord , and called upon the name of the Lord .

9 And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.

10 And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land.

11 And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon:

12 Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive.

13 Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.

14 And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very fair.

15 The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house.

16 And he entreated Abram well for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels.

17 And the Lord plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram's wife.

18 And Pharaoh called Abram and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife?

19 Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way.

20 And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.

Abram Journeys to Egypt

12 Now ( A ) the Lord said to Abram,

“Go from your country,
And from your relatives
And from your father’s house,
To the land which I will show you;
2 And ( B ) I will make you into a great nation,
And ( C ) I will bless you,
And make your name great;
And you shall ( D ) be a blessing;
3 And ( E ) I will bless those who bless you,
And the one who [ a ] curses you I will [ b ] curse.
( F ) And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”

4 So Abram went away as the Lord had spoken to him; and ( G ) Lot went with him. Now Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 Abram took his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot, and all their ( H ) possessions which they had accumulated, and ( I ) the [ c ] people which they had acquired in Haran, and they [ d ] set out for the land of Canaan; ( J ) so they came to the land of Canaan. 6 Abram passed through the land as far as the site of ( K ) Shechem, to the [ e ] oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanites were in the land at that time. 7 And the Lord ( L ) appeared to Abram and said, “ ( M ) To your [ f ] descendants I will give this land.” So he built ( N ) an altar there to the Lord who had appeared to him. 8 Then he proceeded from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent with ( O ) Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the Lord and ( P ) called upon the name of the Lord . 9 Then Abram journeyed on, continuing toward ( Q ) the [ g ] Negev.

10 Now there was ( R ) a famine in the land; so Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a time, because the famine was ( S ) severe in the land. 11 It came about, when he [ h ] was approaching Egypt, that he said to his wife Sarai, “See now, I know that you are a [ i ] ( T ) beautiful woman; 12 ( U ) and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they will kill me, but they will let you live. 13 Please say that you are ( V ) my sister so that it may go well for me because of you, and that [ j ] ( W ) I may live on account of you.” 14 Now it came about, when Abram entered Egypt, that the Egyptians [ k ] saw that the woman was very beautiful. 15 Pharaoh’s officials saw her and praised her to Pharaoh; and ( X ) the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house. 16 Therefore ( Y ) he treated Abram well for her sake; and [ l ] ( Z ) he gave him sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants and female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

17 But the Lord ( AA ) struck Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18 Then Pharaoh called Abram and said, “ ( AB ) What is this that you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for myself as a wife? Now then, [ m ] here is your wife, take her and go!” 20 And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they [ n ] escorted him away, with his wife and all that belonged to him.

The Call of Abram

12 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household ( A ) to the land ( B ) I will show you. ( C )

2 “I will make you into a great nation, ( D )
and I will bless you; ( E )
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing. [ a ] ( F )
3 I will bless those who bless you,

and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you. ( H ) [ b ]

4 So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot ( I ) went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old ( J ) when he set out from Harran. ( K ) 5 He took his wife Sarai, ( L ) his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated ( M ) and the people ( N ) they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, ( O ) and they arrived there.

6 Abram traveled through the land ( P ) as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh ( Q ) at Shechem. ( R ) At that time the Canaanites ( S ) were in the land. 7 The Lord appeared to Abram ( T ) and said, “To your offspring [ c ] I will give this land. ( U ) ( V ) So he built an altar there to the Lord , ( W ) who had appeared to him.

8 From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel ( X ) and pitched his tent, ( Y ) with Bethel on the west and Ai ( Z ) on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord . ( AA )

9 Then Abram set out and continued toward the Negev. ( AB )

Abram in Egypt ( AC )

10 Now there was a famine in the land, ( AD ) and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe. ( AE ) 11 As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, ( AF ) “I know what a beautiful woman ( AG ) you are. 12 When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live. 13 Say you are my sister, ( AH ) so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.”

14 When Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that Sarai was a very beautiful woman. ( AI ) 15 And when Pharaoh’s officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh, and she was taken into his palace. 16 He treated Abram well for her sake, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels. ( AJ )

17 But the Lord inflicted ( AK ) serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household ( AL ) because of Abram’s wife Sarai. 18 So Pharaoh summoned Abram. “What have you done to me?” ( AM ) he said. “Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife? ( AN ) 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ ( AO ) so that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!” 20 Then Pharaoh gave orders about Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and everything he had.
