Ezekiel 45

Special land for the Lord

45 ‘You must divide the land into different parts to belong to each tribe. When you do this, you must give one part to the Lord . It will belong to the Lord as a holy piece of land. It will be 12½ kilometres long and 10 kilometres wide. All of this land will be holy. 2 Part of this land will be for the temple. It will be 250 metres long and 250 metres wide. Keep an empty space 25 metres wide all around this piece of land. 3 Inside the holy piece of land, measure a part that is 12½ kilometres long and 5 kilometres wide. This part will contain the temple, the most holy place. 4 The priests will have this holy part of the land. They are the men who work in the temple and come near to the Lord to serve him. The priests' houses will be there, as well as the temple. 5 The other half of the holy piece of land will be for the Levites, who work in the temple. They will have towns there to live in. Their land will be 12½ kilometres long and 5 kilometres wide.

6 There will also be a piece of land for the city, 12½ kilometres long and 2½ kilometres wide. It will be beside the holy piece of land. Any of Israel's people may live there.

7 There will be two pieces of land for the ruler. One piece will be on the east side of the holy piece of land and the land for the city. The other piece will be on the west side. The piece on the west side will go as far as the sea. The piece on the east side will go as far as the border of the land. So his land will be as long as a part of the land that belongs to each tribe. 8 This will be the part of Israel's land that belongs to the ruler. Because my rulers will have their own land, they will no longer need to make my people suffer. They will give to each tribe a part of the land that will belong to them.

9 The Almighty Lord says this: Rulers of Israel, stop cheating my people and making them suffer! You have done enough bad things! Instead, do things that are right and fair. Stop chasing my people off their land. That is what the Almighty Lord says.

10 You must use correct measures for size and for weight. 11 The ephah that you use to measure dry things must be the same measure that you use for wet things. Ten ephahs will be equal to one homer. 12 20 gerahs will be equal to one shekel. 60 shekels will be equal to one mina. [ a ]

Offerings and holy days

13 This is the offering that you must give. Take from your harvest one homer from every 60 homers of wheat or barley. 14 Take one litre of olive oil from every 100 litres. 15 Take one sheep from every 200 sheep that feed on the grass in Israel. These gifts will be for grain offerings, for burnt offerings and for friendship offerings. These offerings will cause me to forgive you for your sins. I, the Almighty Lord , tell you to do this.

16 All Israel's people must bring these offerings to the ruler of Israel. 17 The ruler must provide the animals for the burnt offerings. He must provide the grain for the grain offerings and the wine for the wine offerings. He must provide these things for the holy festivals that I have chosen for Israel's people. Those include feasts for the new moon and for the Sabbath days. He must provide these things for the sin offerings, the grain offerings, the burnt offerings and the friendship offerings. They will cause me to forgive the sins of Israel's people.

18 This is what the Almighty Lord says: Each year, on the first day of the first month, you must offer a young bull as a sacrifice. It must not have anything wrong with it. This sacrifice will cause the temple to be clean. 19 The priest will take some of the blood of this sin offering and he will put it on the posts of the temple doors. He must also put some of the blood on the four corners on the top of the altar. He must also put some blood on the gate posts at the entrance to the inside yard of the temple. 20 You must also do this on the seventh day of the first month. That will cause me to forgive anyone who has done a wrong thing by mistake. Perhaps they did not know that it was a sin. In this way you will make the temple a clean place for me.

21 Each year, on the 14th day of the first month, you must start the Passover festival. The festival will continue for seven days. [ b ] During that time you must not eat any bread that hasyeast in it.

22 On the first day of the festival, the ruler must provide a bull as a sin offering. It is an offering for himself and for all the people of Israel. 23 Every day of the feast he must provide seven young bulls and seven male sheep for burnt offerings to the Lord . The animals must have nothing wrong with them. Each day of the festival, he must also give a male goat as a sin offering. 24 With each bull and each sheep, the ruler must also provide an ephah of grain. He must provide a hin of olive oil with each ephah of grain. [ c ]

25 You will have another festival that starts on the 15th day of the 7th month. It will continue for seven days. Each day, the ruler must provide the same things for sin offerings, burnt offerings and grain offerings, as well as the olive oil.’

Footnotes

  1. 45:12 A mina was about 600 grams. An ephah was about 22 litres. A homer was about 220 litres. In the days of Ezekiel, a shekel was about 11 grams.
  2. 45:21 During the Passover festival, the Israelites remember how God brought them out of Egypt. See Exodus 12 .
  3. 45:24 A hin was about 3 litres.

The Division of the Land for Holy Use

45 “You will divide the land for the Israelite tribes by throwing lots. At that time you will separate out a part of the land. It will be a holy part for the Lord . The land will be 25,000 cubits [ a ] long and 20,000 cubits [ b ] wide. [ c ] All this land will be holy. 2 A square area that is 500 cubits [ d ] long on each side will be for the Temple. There will be an open space around the Temple that is 50 cubits [ e ] wide. 3 In the holy area you will measure 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits [ f ] wide. The Temple will be in this area. The Temple area will be the Most Holy Place.

4 “This holy part of the land will be for the priests, the servants of the Temple. This is where they approach the Lord to serve him. It will be a place for the priests’ houses and a place for the Temple. 5 Another area, 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide, will be for the Levites who serve in the Temple. This land will also become cities for the Levites.

6 “And you will give the city an area that is 5000 cubits [ g ] wide and 25,000 cubits long. It will be along the side of the holy area. It will be for all the family of Israel. 7 The ruler will have land on both sides of the holy area and the land belonging to the city. It will be next to the holy area and the area belonging to the city. It will be the same width as the land that belongs to a tribe. It will go all the way from the west border to the east border. 8 This land will be the ruler’s property in Israel. So he will not need to make life hard for my people anymore. But they will give the land to the Israelites for their tribes.”

9 This is what the Lord God said: “Enough, you rulers of Israel! Stop being cruel and stealing things from people! Be fair and do what is right! Stop forcing my people out from their homes!” This is what the Lord God said.

10 “Stop cheating people. Use accurate scales and measures! 11 The ephah and the bath must be the same size: A bath and an ephah must both equal 1/10 homer. [ h ] Those measures will be based on the homer. 12 A shekel [ i ] must equal 20 gerahs. A mina must equal 60 shekels. It must be equal to 20 shekels plus 25 shekels plus 15 shekels.

13 “This is a special offering that you must give:

1/6 ephah [ j ] of wheat for every homer of wheat;

1/6 ephah of barley for every homer of barley;

14 1/10 bath [ k ] of olive oil for every cor [ l ] of olive oil;

(Remember: Ten baths make a homer, and ten baths make a cor .)

15 and one sheep for every 200 sheep

from every watering hole in Israel.

“Those special offerings are for the grain offerings, for the burnt offerings, and for the fellowship offerings. These offerings are to remove the sins of the people.” This is what the Lord God said.

16 “Everyone in the country will give to this offering for the ruler of Israel. 17 But the ruler must give the things needed for the special holy days. The ruler must provide the burnt offerings, the grain offerings, and the drink offerings for the feast days, for the New Moon, for the Sabbaths, and for all the other special meeting days of the family of Israel. He must give all the sin offerings, grain offerings, burnt offerings, and fellowship offerings that are used to make the family of Israel pure.”

18 This is what the Lord God says: “In the first month, on the first day of the month, you will take a young bull that has nothing wrong with it. You must use that bull to make the Temple pure. 19 The priest will take some of the blood from the sin offering and put it on the doorposts of the Temple and on the four corners of the ledge of the altar and on the posts of the gate to the inner courtyard. 20 You will do the same thing on the seventh day of that month for anyone who has sinned by mistake or without knowing it. So you will make the Temple pure.

Offerings During the Passover

21 “On the 14th day of the first month, you must celebrate the Passover. The Festival of Unleavened Bread begins at this time. It continues for seven days. 22 At that time the ruler will offer a bull for himself and for all the people of Israel. The bull will be for a sin offering. 23 During the seven days of the festival, the ruler will offer seven bulls and seven rams that have nothing wrong with them. They will be burnt offerings to the Lord . The ruler will offer one bull on every day of the seven days of the festival, and he will offer a male goat every day for a sin offering. 24 The ruler will give an ephah [ m ] of barley as a grain offering with each bull, and an ephah of barley with each ram. He must give a hin [ n ] of oil for each ephah of grain. 25 He must do the same thing for the seven days of the Festival of Shelters . This festival begins on the 15th day of the seventh month. These offerings will be the sin offering, the burnt offering, the grain offering, and the oil offering.”

45 Moreover, when ye shall divide by lot the land for inheritance, ye shall offer an oblation unto the Lord , an holy portion of the land: the length shall be the length of five and twenty thousand reeds, and the breadth shall be ten thousand. This shall be holy in all the borders thereof round about.

2 Of this there shall be for the sanctuary five hundred in length, with five hundred in breadth, square round about; and fifty cubits round about for the suburbs thereof.

3 And of this measure shalt thou measure the length of five and twenty thousand, and the breadth of ten thousand: and in it shall be the sanctuary and the most holy place.

4 The holy portion of the land shall be for the priests the ministers of the sanctuary, which shall come near to minister unto the Lord : and it shall be a place for their houses, and an holy place for the sanctuary.

5 And the five and twenty thousand of length, and the ten thousand of breadth shall also the Levites, the ministers of the house, have for themselves, for a possession for twenty chambers.

6 And ye shall appoint the possession of the city five thousand broad, and five and twenty thousand long, over against the oblation of the holy portion: it shall be for the whole house of Israel.

7 And a portion shall be for the prince on the one side and on the other side of the oblation of the holy portion, and of the possession of the city, before the oblation of the holy portion, and before the possession of the city, from the west side westward, and from the east side eastward: and the length shall be over against one of the portions, from the west border unto the east border.

8 In the land shall be his possession in Israel: and my princes shall no more oppress my people; and the rest of the land shall they give to the house of Israel according to their tribes.

9 Thus saith the Lord God ; Let it suffice you, O princes of Israel: remove violence and spoil, and execute judgment and justice, take away your exactions from my people, saith the Lord God .

10 Ye shall have just balances, and a just ephah, and a just bath.

11 The ephah and the bath shall be of one measure, that the bath may contain the tenth part of an homer, and the ephah the tenth part of an homer: the measure thereof shall be after the homer.

12 And the shekel shall be twenty gerahs: twenty shekels, five and twenty shekels, fifteen shekels, shall be your maneh.

13 This is the oblation that ye shall offer; the sixth part of an ephah of an homer of wheat, and ye shall give the sixth part of an ephah of an homer of barley:

14 Concerning the ordinance of oil, the bath of oil, ye shall offer the tenth part of a bath out of the cor, which is an homer of ten baths; for ten baths are an homer:

15 And one lamb out of the flock, out of two hundred, out of the fat pastures of Israel; for a meat offering, and for a burnt offering, and for peace offerings, to make reconciliation for them, saith the Lord God .

16 All the people of the land shall give this oblation for the prince in Israel.

17 And it shall be the prince's part to give burnt offerings, and meat offerings, and drink offerings, in the feasts, and in the new moons, and in the sabbaths, in all solemnities of the house of Israel: he shall prepare the sin offering, and the meat offering, and the burnt offering, and the peace offerings, to make reconciliation for the house of Israel.

18 Thus saith the Lord God ; In the first month, in the first day of the month, thou shalt take a young bullock without blemish, and cleanse the sanctuary:

19 And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin offering, and put it upon the posts of the house, and upon the four corners of the settle of the altar, and upon the posts of the gate of the inner court.

20 And so thou shalt do the seventh day of the month for every one that erreth, and for him that is simple: so shall ye reconcile the house.

21 In the first month, in the fourteenth day of the month, ye shall have the passover, a feast of seven days; unleavened bread shall be eaten.

22 And upon that day shall the prince prepare for himself and for all the people of the land a bullock for a sin offering.

23 And seven days of the feast he shall prepare a burnt offering to the Lord , seven bullocks and seven rams without blemish daily the seven days; and a kid of the goats daily for a sin offering.

24 And he shall prepare a meat offering of an ephah for a bullock, and an ephah for a ram, and an hin of oil for an ephah.

25 In the seventh month, in the fifteenth day of the month, shall he do the like in the feast of the seven days, according to the sin offering, according to the burnt offering, and according to the meat offering, and according to the oil.

The Lord s Portion of the Land

45 “Now when you ( A ) divide the land by lot for inheritance, you shall offer [ a ] an ( B ) allotment to the Lord , a ( C ) holy portion of the land; the length shall be a length of twenty-five thousand [ b ] ( D ) cubits , and the width shall be [ c ] twenty thousand. It shall be holy within its entire surrounding boundary. 2 Out of this there shall be for the sanctuary a square encompassing ( E ) five hundred by five hundred cubits , and fifty cubits for its [ d ] ( F ) open space round about. 3 From this [ e ] area you shall measure a length of twenty-five thousand cubits and a width of ten thousand cubits ; and in it shall be the sanctuary, the Most Holy Place. 4 It shall be the holy portion of the land; it shall be for the ( G ) priests, the ministers of the sanctuary, who ( H ) come near to serve the Lord , and it shall be a place for their houses and a holy place for the sanctuary. 5 An area ( I ) twenty-five thousand cubits in length and ten thousand in width shall be for the Levites, the ministers of the house, and for their possession [ f ] cities in which to live.

6 “And you shall give the ( J ) city possession of an area five thousand cubits wide and twenty-five thousand cubits long, alongside the [ g ] allotment of the holy portion; it shall be for the entire house of Israel.

Portion for the Prince

7 “And the ( K ) prince shall have land on either side of the holy [ h ] allotment and the [ i ] property of the city, adjacent to the holy [ j ] allotment and the [ k ] property of the city, on the west side toward the west and on the east side toward the east, and in length comparable to one of the portions, from the west border to the east border. 8 This shall be his land as a possession in Israel; so My princes shall no longer ( L ) oppress My people, but they shall give the rest of the land to the house of Israel ( M ) according to their tribes.”

9 ‘This is what the Lord [ l ] God says: “ ( N ) Enough, you princes of Israel; get rid of ( O ) violence and destruction, and ( P ) practice justice and righteousness. Revoke your ( Q ) evictions of My people,” declares the Lord God .

10 “You shall have ( R ) accurate balances, an accurate [ m ] ( S ) ephah, and an accurate [ n ] ( T ) bath. 11 The ephah and the bath shall be [ o ] the same quantity, so that the bath will contain a tenth of a ( U ) homer, and the ephah a tenth of a [ p ] homer; [ q ] their standard shall be according to the homer. 12 And the ( V ) shekel shall be twenty ( W ) gerahs; twenty shekels, twenty-five shekels, and fifteen shekels shall be your mina.

13 “This is the offering that you shall offer: a sixth of an ephah from each homer of wheat; a sixth of an ephah from each homer of barley; 14 and the prescribed portion of oil ( namely , the bath of oil), a tenth of a bath from each kor ( which is ten baths or a homer, for ten baths are a homer); 15 and one sheep from each flock of two hundred from the watering places of Israel—for a ( X ) grain offering, for a burnt offering, and for peace offerings, to ( Y ) make atonement for them,” declares the Lord God . 16 ( Z ) All the people of the land shall [ r ] give to this offering for the ( AA ) prince in Israel. 17 And it shall be the ( AB ) prince’s part to provide the ( AC ) burnt offerings, the grain offerings, and the drink offerings, at the ( AD ) feasts, on the ( AE ) new moons, and on the Sabbaths, at all the appointed feasts of the house of Israel; he shall provide the sin offering, the grain offering, the burnt offering, and the ( AF ) peace offerings, to make atonement for the house of Israel.”

18 ‘This is what the Lord God says: “In the ( AG ) first month , on the first of the month, you shall take a [ s ] bull ( AH ) without blemish and ( AI ) cleanse the sanctuary from sin. 19 And the priest shall take some of the blood from the sin offering and put it on the door posts of the house, on the ( AJ ) four corners of the ( AK ) ledge of the altar, and on the posts of the gate of the inner courtyard. 20 And you shall do this on the seventh day of the month for everyone who does ( AL ) wrong inadvertently or is naive; so you shall make ( AM ) atonement for the house.

21 “In the ( AN ) first month , on the fourteenth day of the month, you shall have the ( AO ) Passover, a feast of seven days; unleavened bread shall be eaten. 22 On that day the prince shall provide for himself and all the people of the land a ( AP ) bull as a sin offering. 23 And during the ( AQ ) seven days of the feast he shall provide as a ( AR ) burnt offering to the Lord ( AS ) seven bulls and seven rams without blemish on every day of the seven days, and a male goat daily as a sin offering. 24 And he shall provide as a ( AT ) grain offering an [ t ] ephah [ u ] with a bull, an [ v ] ephah [ w ] with a ram, and a [ x ] hin of oil [ y ] with an ephah. 25 In the ( AU ) seventh month , on the fifteenth day of the month, at the feast, he shall provide like these, seven days [ z ] for the sin offering, the burnt offering, the grain offering, and the oil.”

Israel Fully Restored

45 “‘When you allot the land as an inheritance, ( A ) you are to present to the Lord a portion of the land as a sacred district, 25,000 cubits [ a ] long and 20,000 [ b ] cubits [ c ] wide; the entire area will be holy. ( B ) 2 Of this, a section 500 cubits [ d ] square ( C ) is to be for the sanctuary, with 50 cubits [ e ] around it for open land. 3 In the sacred district, measure off a section 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits [ f ] wide. In it will be the sanctuary, the Most Holy Place. 4 It will be the sacred portion of the land for the priests, ( D ) who minister in the sanctuary and who draw near to minister before the Lord . It will be a place for their houses as well as a holy place for the sanctuary. ( E ) 5 An area 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide will belong to the Levites, who serve in the temple, as their possession for towns to live in. [ g ] ( F )

6 “‘You are to give the city as its property an area 5,000 cubits [ h ] wide and 25,000 cubits long, adjoining the sacred portion; it will belong to all Israel. ( G )

7 “‘The prince will have the land bordering each side of the area formed by the sacred district and the property of the city. It will extend westward from the west side and eastward from the east side, running lengthwise from the western to the eastern border parallel to one of the tribal portions. ( H ) 8 This land will be his possession in Israel. And my princes will no longer oppress my people but will allow the people of Israel to possess the land according to their tribes. ( I )

9 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: You have gone far enough, princes of Israel! Give up your violence and oppression ( J ) and do what is just and right. ( K ) Stop dispossessing my people, declares the Sovereign Lord . 10 You are to use accurate scales, ( L ) an accurate ephah [ i ] ( M ) and an accurate bath. [ j ] 11 The ephah ( N ) and the bath are to be the same size, the bath containing a tenth of a homer and the ephah a tenth of a homer; the homer is to be the standard measure for both. 12 The shekel [ k ] is to consist of twenty gerahs. ( O ) Twenty shekels plus twenty-five shekels plus fifteen shekels equal one mina. [ l ]

13 “‘This is the special gift you are to offer: a sixth of an ephah [ m ] from each homer of wheat and a sixth of an ephah [ n ] from each homer of barley. 14 The prescribed portion of olive oil, measured by the bath, is a tenth of a bath [ o ] from each cor (which consists of ten baths or one homer, for ten baths are equivalent to a homer). 15 Also one sheep is to be taken from every flock of two hundred from the well-watered pastures of Israel. These will be used for the grain offerings, burnt offerings ( P ) and fellowship offerings to make atonement ( Q ) for the people, declares the Sovereign Lord . 16 All the people of the land will be required to give this special offering to the prince in Israel. 17 It will be the duty of the prince to provide the burnt offerings, grain offerings and drink offerings at the festivals, the New Moons ( R ) and the Sabbaths ( S ) —at all the appointed festivals of Israel. He will provide the sin offerings, [ p ] grain offerings, burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to make atonement for the Israelites. ( T )

18 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: In the first month ( U ) on the first day you are to take a young bull without defect ( V ) and purify the sanctuary. ( W ) 19 The priest is to take some of the blood of the sin offering and put it on the doorposts of the temple, on the four corners of the upper ledge ( X ) of the altar ( Y ) and on the gateposts of the inner court. 20 You are to do the same on the seventh day of the month for anyone who sins unintentionally ( Z ) or through ignorance; so you are to make atonement for the temple.

21 “‘In the first month on the fourteenth day you are to observe the Passover, ( AA ) a festival lasting seven days, during which you shall eat bread made without yeast. 22 On that day the prince is to provide a bull as a sin offering for himself and for all the people of the land. ( AB ) 23 Every day during the seven days of the festival he is to provide seven bulls and seven rams ( AC ) without defect as a burnt offering to the Lord , and a male goat for a sin offering. ( AD ) 24 He is to provide as a grain offering ( AE ) an ephah for each bull and an ephah for each ram, along with a hin [ q ] of olive oil for each ephah. ( AF )

25 “‘During the seven days of the festival, ( AG ) which begins in the seventh month on the fifteenth day, he is to make the same provision for sin offerings, burnt offerings, grain offerings and oil. ( AH )
