Ezekiel 32

A funeral song for Egypt and its king

32 The Lord gave this message to me on the first day of the 12th month, in the 12th year: 2 ‘Son of man, sing a funeral song about Pharaoh, king of Egypt. Say this to him:

“You have shown your power among the nations,
like a strong lion.
But really you are a monster who lives in the sea.
You live in the rivers of your country.
You beat the water with your feet.
The water of your streams becomes dirty.

3 This is what the Almighty Lord says:

I will bring a big crowd of people together
to catch you in my net.
They will use my net to pull you out of the water.
4 I will throw you onto dry ground
and I will leave you there.
I will bring the birds to fly down from the sky
and sit on you.
I will bring the wild animals to feed themselves on you,
and eat as much as they want.
5 I will put the meat of your body on the mountains.
Your bones will fill the valleys.
6 I will make the ground wet with your blood.
It will pour out of you, up to the mountains.
And it will fill the deep valleys.
7 When I completely destroy you,
I will cover the sky and make the stars become dark.
I will cover the sun with a cloud.
The moon will no longer give any light.
8 I will make the sky over you become dark,
with no lights in it.
Your whole country will become dark.

That is what the Almighty Lord says.

9 When many other nations know that I have destroyed you,
they will be afraid.
Foreign nations that you do not know will be very upset.
10 The people of many countries will be afraid
when they see what I have done to you.
Their kings will shake with fear.
When I wave my sword in front of them,
they will not stop shaking!
At the time that your life finishes,
they will also fear death.

11 This is what the Almighty Lord says:

The king of Babylon will attack you with his army.
12 His brave soldiers will fight against you.
I will cause them to destroy your army.
They are the most cruel of all the nations.
They will stop Egypt's people being proud of their power.
They will destroy all Egypt's armies.
13 I will destroy all Egypt's cows that live beside its great rivers.
So no people or animals will walk in the water any more.
They will not cause the water to become dirty.
14 Then I will cause the water in the rivers to be clean again.
The water will move freely like olive oil.

That is what the Almighty Lord says.

15 I will cause Egypt to become an empty place.
I will remove everything that grows on the land.
I will kill all the people who live there.
Then they will know that I am the Lord .”

16 That is the funeral song that they will sing about Egypt. Women of many nations will sing it. They will sing it because of the death of Egypt and all her people. That is what the Almighty Lord says.’

17 In the 12th year, the Lord gave this message to me on the 15th day of the month: 18 ‘Son of man, weep for the many people of Egypt. Send them down to the place of dead people, deep under the ground. They will be there in their graves with the people of other powerful nations. 19 Say to them, “You think you are more beautiful than the people of other nations. But you too must go down to lie in your graves among those who do not belong to God.”

20 An enemy has come to attack Egypt! Many of its people will die among the soldiers who die in battle. The enemy will take many of Egypt's people away as their prisoners. 21 In the place of dead people, brave soldiers will welcome the people of Egypt and those who helped them. They will say, “They have come down to join us who do not belong to God. They have died in battle and now they lie in their graves.”

22 The people of Assyria and its whole army are there in their graves! All of them died in battle. 23 Their graves are in the deepest parts of the deep hole of death. Soldiers who fought with them lie all around. They were very cruel to people when they were alive. But they died in battle and now they lie in their graves.

24 The people of Elam and its whole army are also there! All of them died in battle too. They were cruel to many people when they were alive. Now they have gone down deep below the ground, as people who do not belong to God. They are ashamed to join with other people in the deep hole of death. 25 Elam lies there on a bed that people have prepared for her. All Elam's soldiers lie around its grave. None of them belongs to God and they have all died in battle. When they were alive, they made people very afraid. But now they are ashamed, as they lie in their graves among other dead people in the deep hole of death.

26 Meshech and Tubal are also there in their graves, with their soldiers all around. When they were alive, they made people very afraid. Now they have all died in battle and none of them belongs to God. 27 They do not lie with the brave dead soldiers of long ago. Those men went down into their graves with honour. People buried them with their weapons. They put their swords under their heads. When those brave men were alive, they caused people to be very afraid of them.

28 You too, Egypt, will lie in your grave among those who do not belong to God. You will lie beside other people who died in battle.

29 Edom is there, too, with its kings and leaders. They were powerful, but now they lie in their graves, among those who have died in battle. They have gone down into the deep hole of death with those who do not belong to God.

30 All the rulers of the north are there, as well as all the people of Sidon. They used their power to make people very afraid. But now they are ashamed, like other people who have gone down into the deep hole of death. They lie in their graves with those who have died in battle, and they do not belong to God.

31 The Almighty Lord says this: Pharaoh will not feel so sad when he sees all these other dead people in their graves. He and his whole army will know that they are not the only people to have died in battle. 32 When he was alive, I caused him to make people very afraid. But Pharaoh and all his great army will lie in their graves among other people who died in battle. They will lie with people who do not belong to God. That is what I, the Almighty Lord , have said.’

Pharaoh: a Lion or a Dragon?

32 On the first day of the twelfth month in the twelfth year of exile, [ a ] the word of the Lord came to me. He said, 2 “Son of man, [ b ] sing this sad song about Pharaoh, king of Egypt. Say to him:

“‘You thought you were like a powerful young lion walking proud among the nations.
But really, you are like a dragon [ c ] in the lakes.
You push your way through the streams.
You make the water muddy with your feet
and stir up the rivers of Egypt.’”

3 This is what the Lord God says:

“I have gathered many people together.
Now I will throw my net over you.
Then those people will pull you in.
4 Then I will drop you on the dry ground.
I will throw you down in the field.
I will let all the birds come and eat you.
I will let wild animals from every place come and eat you until they are full.
5 I will scatter your body on the mountains.
I will fill the valleys with your dead body.
6 I will pour your blood on the mountains,
and it will soak down into the ground.
The rivers will be full of you.
7 I will make you disappear.
I will cover the sky and make the stars dark.
I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon will not shine.
8 I will darken the lights in the sky over you.
I will make your whole country dark.”
This is what the Lord God said.

9 “I will make many people sad and upset when I bring an enemy to destroy you. Nations you don’t even know will be upset. 10 I will make many people shocked about you. Their kings will be terrified of you, when I swing my sword before them. They will shake with fear on the day you fall. Each king will be afraid for his own life.”

11 That will happen because of what the Lord God said: “The sword of the king of Babylon will come to fight against you. 12 I will use those soldiers to kill your people in battle. They come from the most terrible of the nations. They will destroy the things Egypt is proud of. The people of Egypt will be destroyed. 13 There are many animals by the rivers in Egypt. I will also destroy all those animals. People will not make the waters muddy with their feet anymore. The hoofs of cattle will not make the water muddy anymore. 14 So I will make the water in Egypt calm. I will cause their rivers to run slowly—they will be slick like oil.” This is what the Lord God said. 15 “I will make the land of Egypt empty. That land will lose everything. I will punish all the people living in Egypt. Then they will know that I am the Lord !

16 “This is a sad song that people will sing for Egypt. The daughters in other nations will sing this sad song. They will sing it as a sad song about Egypt and all its people.” This is what the Lord God said.

Egypt to Be Destroyed

17 On the fifteenth day of that month in the twelfth year of exile, the word of the Lord came to me. He said, 18 “Son of man, cry for the people of Egypt. Lead Egypt and the daughters from powerful nations to the grave. Lead them to the world below where they will be with the other people who went down into that deep hole.

19 “Egypt, you are no better than anyone else! Go down to the place of death. Go lie down with those foreigners. [ d ]

20 “Egypt will go to be with all the other men who were killed in battle. The enemy has pulled her and all her people away.

21 “Strong and powerful men were killed in battle. Those foreigners went down to the place of death. And from that place, those who were killed will speak to Egypt and his helpers.

22-23 “Assyria and all its army are there in the place of death. Their graves are deep down in that deep hole. All the Assyrian soldiers were killed in battle, and their graves are all around his grave. When they were alive, they made people afraid, but they were all killed in battle.

24 “Elam is there and all its army is around her grave. All of them were killed in battle. Those foreigners went deep down into the ground. When they were alive, they made people afraid. But they carried their shame with them down to that deep hole. 25 They have made a bed for Elam and all its soldiers who were killed in battle. Elam’s army is all around its grave. All those foreigners were killed in battle. When they were alive, they scared people. But they carried their shame with them down into that deep hole. They were put with all the other people who were killed.

26 “Meshech, Tubal, and all their armies are there. Their graves are around it. All those foreigners were killed in battle. When they were alive, they made people afraid. 27 But now they are lying down by the powerful men who died long, long ago! They were buried with their weapons of war. Their swords will be laid under their heads. But their sins are on their bones, because when they were alive, they scared people.

28 “Egypt, you also will be destroyed, and you will lie down by those foreigners. You will lie with the other soldiers who were killed in battle.

29 “Edom is there also. His kings and other leaders are there with him. They were powerful soldiers, but now they lie with the other men who were killed in battle. They are lying there with those foreigners. They are there with the other people who went down into that deep hole.

30 “The rulers from the north are there, all of them, and there are all the soldiers from Sidon. Their strength scared people, but they are embarrassed. Those foreigners lie there with the other men who were killed in battle. They carried their shame with them down into that deep hole.

31 “Yes, Pharaoh and all his army will be killed in battle. Pharaoh will be comforted when he sees his many men and all the others who went down into the place of death.” This is what the Lord God said.

32 “People were afraid of Pharaoh when he was alive, but he will lie down next to those foreigners. Pharaoh and his army will lie down with all the other soldiers who were killed in battle.” This is what the Lord God said.

  1. Ezekiel 32:1 twelfth year of exile This was early spring, 585 B.C. Also in verse 17.
  2. Ezekiel 32:2 Son of man This was usually just a way of saying “a person” or “a human being.” Here, it is a way of addressing Ezekiel. Also in verse 18.
  3. Ezekiel 32:2 dragon This might be a crocodile or a giant sea creature. The giant sea creature represented the power of the sea, and the Nile River made Egypt a powerful nation.
  4. Ezekiel 32:19 foreigners Literally, “uncircumcised.” This means people who did not share in the agreement God made with Israel. See “ circumcise, circumcision ” in the Word List.

32 And it came to pass in the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, in the first day of the month, that the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

2 Son of man, take up a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say unto him, Thou art like a young lion of the nations, and thou art as a whale in the seas: and thou camest forth with thy rivers, and troubledst the waters with thy feet, and fouledst their rivers.

3 Thus saith the Lord God ; I will therefore spread out my net over thee with a company of many people; and they shall bring thee up in my net.

4 Then will I leave thee upon the land, I will cast thee forth upon the open field, and will cause all the fowls of the heaven to remain upon thee, and I will fill the beasts of the whole earth with thee.

5 And I will lay thy flesh upon the mountains, and fill the valleys with thy height.

6 I will also water with thy blood the land wherein thou swimmest, even to the mountains; and the rivers shall be full of thee.

7 And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light.

8 All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord God .

9 I will also vex the hearts of many people, when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations, into the countries which thou hast not known.

10 Yea, I will make many people amazed at thee, and their kings shall be horribly afraid for thee, when I shall brandish my sword before them; and they shall tremble at every moment, every man for his own life, in the day of thy fall.

11 For thus saith the Lord God ; The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon thee.

12 By the swords of the mighty will I cause thy multitude to fall, the terrible of the nations, all of them: and they shall spoil the pomp of Egypt, and all the multitude thereof shall be destroyed.

13 I will destroy also all the beasts thereof from beside the great waters; neither shall the foot of man trouble them any more, nor the hoofs of beasts trouble them.

14 Then will I make their waters deep, and cause their rivers to run like oil, saith the Lord God .

15 When I shall make the land of Egypt desolate, and the country shall be destitute of that whereof it was full, when I shall smite all them that dwell therein, then shall they know that I am the Lord .

16 This is the lamentation wherewith they shall lament her: the daughters of the nations shall lament her: they shall lament for her, even for Egypt, and for all her multitude, saith the Lord God .

17 It came to pass also in the twelfth year, in the fifteenth day of the month, that the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

18 Son of man, wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, even her, and the daughters of the famous nations, unto the nether parts of the earth, with them that go down into the pit.

19 Whom dost thou pass in beauty? go down, and be thou laid with the uncircumcised.

20 They shall fall in the midst of them that are slain by the sword: she is delivered to the sword: draw her and all her multitudes.

21 The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell with them that help him: they are gone down, they lie uncircumcised, slain by the sword.

22 Asshur is there and all her company: his graves are about him: all of them slain, fallen by the sword:

23 Whose graves are set in the sides of the pit, and her company is round about her grave: all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which caused terror in the land of the living.

24 There is Elam and all her multitude round about her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which are gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the earth, which caused their terror in the land of the living; yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit.

25 They have set her a bed in the midst of the slain with all her multitude: her graves are round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword: though their terror was caused in the land of the living, yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit: he is put in the midst of them that be slain.

26 There is Meshech, Tubal, and all her multitude: her graves are round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword, though they caused their terror in the land of the living.

27 And they shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the uncircumcised, which are gone down to hell with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones, though they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.

28 Yea, thou shalt be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised, and shalt lie with them that are slain with the sword.

29 There is Edom, her kings, and all her princes, which with their might are laid by them that were slain by the sword: they shall lie with the uncircumcised, and with them that go down to the pit.

30 There be the princes of the north, all of them, and all the Zidonians, which are gone down with the slain; with their terror they are ashamed of their might; and they lie uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword, and bear their shame with them that go down to the pit.

31 Pharaoh shall see them, and shall be comforted over all his multitude, even Pharaoh and all his army slain by the sword, saith the Lord God .

32 For I have caused my terror in the land of the living: and he shall be laid in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that are slain with the sword, even Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord God .

Grief over Pharaoh and Egypt

32 In the ( A ) twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, take up a ( B ) song of mourning over Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say to him,

‘You [ a ] compared yourself to a young ( C ) lion of the nations,
Yet you are like the ( D ) monster in the seas;
And you ( E ) burst forth in your rivers
And muddied the waters with your feet
And [ b ] fouled their rivers.’”

3 This is what the Lord [ c ] God says:

“Now I will ( F ) spread My net over you
With a contingent of many peoples,
And they will lift you up in My net.
4 I will leave you on the land;
I will hurl you on the [ d ] open field.
And I will cause all the ( G ) birds of the sky to [ e ] nest on you,
And I will satisfy the animals of the whole earth [ f ] with you.
5 I will lay your flesh ( H ) on the mountains
And fill the valleys with your refuse.
6 I will also make the land drink the discharge of your ( I ) blood
As far as the mountains,
And the ravines will be full of you.
7 And when I ( J ) extinguish you,
I will ( K ) cover the heavens and darken their ( L ) stars;
I will cover the ( M ) sun with a cloud
And the moon will not give its light.
8 All the shining ( N ) lights in the heavens
I will darken over you
And will set darkness on your land,”
Declares the Lord God .

9 “I will also ( O ) trouble the hearts of many peoples when I ( P ) bring your destruction among the nations, into lands which you have not known. 10 And I will make many peoples ( Q ) appalled at you, and their kings will be horribly afraid of you when I brandish My sword before them; and ( R ) they will tremble again and again, every person for his own life, on the day of your fall.”

11 For ( S ) the Lord God says ( T ) this: “The sword of the king of Babylon will [ g ] attack you. 12 By the swords of the warriors I will make your multitude fall; all of them are ( U ) tyrants of the nations,

And they will ( V ) devastate the pride of Egypt,
And all its multitude will be destroyed.
13 I will also eliminate all its cattle from beside many waters;
And ( W ) a human foot will not muddy them anymore,
And the hoofs of animals will not muddy them.
14 Then I will make their waters settle,
And make their rivers run like oil,”
Declares the Lord God .
15 “When I make the land of Egypt a ( X ) desolation,
And the land is destitute of that which filled it,
When I strike all those who live in it,
Then they shall ( Y ) know that I am the Lord .

16 This is a ( Z ) song of mourning, and they shall sing it. The daughters of the nations shall sing it. Over Egypt and over all her hordes they shall sing it,” declares the Lord God .

17 In the ( AA ) twelfth year, on the ( AB ) fifteenth of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 18 “Son of man, ( AC ) lament for the hordes of Egypt and ( AD ) bring it down, her and the daughters of the mighty nations, to the ( AE ) netherworld, with those who go down to the pit;

19 ‘Whom do you surpass in beauty?
Go down and make your bed with the ( AF ) uncircumcised.’

20 They shall fall in the midst of those who are killed by the sword. [ h ] She is turned over to the sword; they have ( AG ) dragged her and all her hordes away. 21 The ( AH ) strong among the mighty ones shall speak of him and his helpers from the midst of Sheol: ‘They have gone down, they lie still, the uncircumcised, killed by the sword.’

22 ( AI ) Assyria is there and all her company; [ i ] her graves are all around [ j ] her. All of them killed, fallen by the sword, 23 whose ( AJ ) graves are set in the remotest parts of the pit, and her company is all around her grave. All of them killed, fallen by the sword, who [ k ] spread terror in the land of the living.

24 ( AK ) Elam is there and all her hordes around her grave; all of them killed, fallen by the sword, who went down uncircumcised to the ( AL ) lower parts of the earth, who inflicted their terror on the ( AM ) land of the living, and ( AN ) bore their disgrace with those who go down to the pit. 25 They have made a ( AO ) bed for her among the slain with all her hordes. Her graves are around it, they are all uncircumcised, killed by the sword (although their terror was [ l ] inflicted on the land of the living), and they bore their disgrace with those who go down to the pit; [ m ] they were put in the midst of the slain.

26 ( AP ) Meshech, ( AQ ) Tubal, and all their hordes are there; their graves [ n ] surround them. All of them were killed by the sword ( AR ) uncircumcised, though they inflicted their terror on the land of the living. 27 ( AS ) Nor do they lie beside the fallen [ o ] ( AT ) heroes of the uncircumcised, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war and whose swords were placed under their heads; but the punishment for their ( AU ) wrongdoing rested on their bones, though the terror of these [ p ] heroes was once in the land of the living. 28 But in the midst of the uncircumcised you will be broken and lie with those killed by the sword.

29 “There also is ( AV ) Edom, its kings and all its [ q ] princes, who [ r ] despite all their might are laid with those killed by the sword; they will lie with the uncircumcised and with those who go down to the pit.

30 “There also are the [ s ] chiefs of the ( AW ) north, all of them, and all the ( AX ) Sidonians, who in spite of the terror resulting from their might, in shame went down with the slain. So they lay down uncircumcised with those killed by the sword and bore their disgrace with those who go down to the pit.

31 “These Pharaoh will see, and he will ( AY ) find consolation regarding all his hordes killed by the sword, Pharaoh and all his army,” declares the Lord God . 32 “Though I inflicted the terror of him on the land of the living, yet he will be laid to rest among the uncircumcised along with those killed by the sword, Pharaoh and all his hordes,” declares the Lord God .

A Lament Over Pharaoh

32 In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month on the first day, the word of the Lord came to me: ( A ) 2 “Son of man, take up a lament ( B ) concerning Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him:

“‘You are like a lion ( C ) among the nations;
you are like a monster ( D ) in the seas ( E )
thrashing about in your streams,
churning the water with your feet
and muddying the streams. ( F )

3 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘With a great throng of people
I will cast my net over you,
and they will haul you up in my net. ( G )
4 I will throw you on the land
and hurl you on the open field.
I will let all the birds of the sky settle on you
and all the animals of the wild gorge themselves on you. ( H )
5 I will spread your flesh on the mountains
and fill the valleys ( I ) with your remains.
6 I will drench the land with your flowing blood ( J )
all the way to the mountains,
and the ravines will be filled with your flesh. ( K )
7 When I snuff you out, I will cover the heavens
and darken their stars;
I will cover the sun with a cloud,
and the moon will not give its light. ( L )
8 All the shining lights in the heavens
I will darken ( M ) over you;
I will bring darkness over your land, ( N )
declares the Sovereign Lord .
9 I will trouble the hearts of many peoples
when I bring about your destruction among the nations,
among [ a ] lands you have not known.
10 I will cause many peoples to be appalled at you,
and their kings will shudder with horror because of you
when I brandish my sword ( O ) before them.
On the day ( P ) of your downfall
each of them will tremble
every moment for his life. ( Q )

11 “‘For this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘The sword ( R ) of the king of Babylon ( S )
will come against you. ( T )
12 I will cause your hordes to fall
by the swords of mighty men—
the most ruthless of all nations. ( U )
They will shatter the pride of Egypt,
and all her hordes will be overthrown. ( V )
13 I will destroy all her cattle
from beside abundant waters
no longer to be stirred by the foot of man
or muddied by the hooves of cattle. ( W )
14 Then I will let her waters settle
and make her streams flow like oil,
declares the Sovereign Lord .
15 When I make Egypt desolate
and strip the land of everything in it,
when I strike down all who live there,
then they will know that I am the Lord . ( X )

16 “This is the lament ( Y ) they will chant for her. The daughters of the nations will chant it; for Egypt and all her hordes they will chant it, declares the Sovereign Lord .”

Egypt’s Descent Into the Realm of the Dead

17 In the twelfth year, on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: ( Z ) 18 “Son of man, wail for the hordes of Egypt and consign ( AA ) to the earth below both her and the daughters of mighty nations, along with those who go down to the pit. ( AB ) 19 Say to them, ‘Are you more favored than others? Go down and be laid among the uncircumcised.’ ( AC ) 20 They will fall among those killed by the sword. The sword is drawn; let her be dragged ( AD ) off with all her hordes. ( AE ) 21 From within the realm of the dead ( AF ) the mighty leaders will say of Egypt and her allies, ‘They have come down and they lie with the uncircumcised, ( AG ) with those killed by the sword.’

22 “Assyria is there with her whole army; she is surrounded by the graves of all her slain, all who have fallen by the sword. 23 Their graves are in the depths of the pit ( AH ) and her army lies around her grave. ( AI ) All who had spread terror in the land of the living are slain, fallen by the sword.

24 “Elam ( AJ ) is there, with all her hordes around her grave. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword. ( AK ) All who had spread terror in the land of the living ( AL ) went down uncircumcised to the earth below. They bear their shame with those who go down to the pit. ( AM ) 25 A bed is made for her among the slain, with all her hordes around her grave. All of them are uncircumcised, ( AN ) killed by the sword. Because their terror had spread in the land of the living, they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit; they are laid among the slain.

26 “Meshek and Tubal ( AO ) are there, with all their hordes around their graves.
