Ezekiel 25

The Lord warns Ammon

25 The Lord gave this message to me: 2 ‘Son of man, look towards the people in Ammon. [ a ] You must tell them my message to warn them. 3 Say to them, “Listen to this message from the Almighty Lord . This is what he says: You shouted happily when enemies made my holy place unclean. You were happy when the land of Israel became an empty place. And you were happy when Judah's people went away as prisoners to a foreign country. 4 So listen to me! I will give you to the people in the east to be their slaves. Their soldiers will come and they will put their tents among you. They will live among you. They will eat your fruit and they will drink your milk. 5 I will make Rabbah a place where camels eat grass. [ b ] I will make Ammon a place where sheep rest. Then you will know that I am the Lord . 6 This is what the Almighty Lord says: You were happy when I punished Israel. You clapped your hands together. You stamped your feet on the ground. 7 So listen! I will now use my power to punish you. I will allow other nations to take all your valuable things. I will completely remove you so that you will not be a nation any longer. I will destroy you. Then you will know that I am the Lord .”

The Lord warns Moab

8 The Almighty Lord says this: The people in Moab and Seir said, “Judah's people have become the same as all the other nations.” 9 So listen! I will let enemies attack the towns on the border of Moab. I will destroy their greatest cities, Beth Jeshimoth, Baal Meon and Kiriathaim. 10 I will give Moab's people to the people in the east as their slaves, together with the Ammonites. The other nations will not remember the Ammonites any more. 11 I will also punish Moab's people. [ c ] Then they will know that I am the Lord .

The Lord warns Edom

12 The Almighty Lord says this: Edom's people were cruel to Judah's people when they wanted to punish them. [ d ] They are guilty because of what they did to Judah's people. 13 So the Almighty Lord God says this: I will use my power to punish Edom. I will destroy Edom's people and animals. Edom will become an empty place. Enemy soldiers will use their swords to kill the people, everywhere from Teman to Dedan. 14 I will use my people, the Israelites, to punish Edom. The Edomites will know that I am very angry with them. They will know that their punishment comes from me. That is what the Almighty Lord says.

The Lord warns the Philistines

15 The Almighty Lord says this: The Philistines were cruel to Judah's people when they wanted to punish them. They hated Judah's people and they wanted to destroy them. They would not stop attacking them. 16 So this is what the Almighty Lord says: Listen! I will use my power to punish the Philistines. I will kill the Kerethites. I will destroy the people who remain on the coast of the sea. [ e ] 17 I will punish them very much because of the things that they have done. I will show them that I am very angry with them. When and I punish them as they deserve, they will know that I am the Lord . ’

Footnotes

  1. 25:2 Ammon was a country to the north east of Judah. It was on the edge of the desert that is east of the Jordan River.
  2. 25:5 Rabbah was the capital city of Ammon. It was in the place that is now called Amman, in Jordan.
  3. 25:11 Moab was south of the Arnon River. It was to the east of the Dead Sea.
  4. 25:12 Edom was south of Moab.
  5. 25:16 The Philistines were sailors who lived on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, on the west side of Judah. They were also called Kerethites because they had come from Crete.

Prophecy Against Ammon

25 The word of the Lord came to me. He said, 2 “Son of man, [ a ] look toward the people of Ammon and speak against them for me. 3 Say to them: ‘Listen to the word of the Lord God ! This is what the Lord God says: You were happy when my holy place was destroyed. You were against the land of Israel when it was polluted. You were against the family of Judah when the people were carried away as prisoners. 4 So I will give you to the people from the east. They will get your land. Their armies will set up their camps in your country and will live among you. They will eat your fruit and drink your milk.

5 “‘I will make the city Rabbah a pasture for camels and the country of Ammon a sheep pen. Then you will know that I am the Lord . 6 This is what the Lord God says: You were happy that Jerusalem was destroyed. You clapped your hands and stamped your feet. You had fun insulting the land of Israel, 7 so I will punish you. You will be like the valuable things soldiers take in war. You will lose your inheritance and die in faraway lands. I will destroy your country! Then you will know that I am the Lord .’”

Prophecy Against Moab and Seir

8 This is what the Lord God says: “Moab and Seir [ b ] say, ‘The family of Judah is just like any other nation.’ 9 I will cut into Moab’s shoulder—I will take away the cities that are on its borders—the glory of the land, Beth Jeshimoth, Baal Meon, and Kiriathaim. 10 Then I will give these cities to the people of the east. They will get your land. I will also let those people from the east destroy the Ammonites, and people will forget they were ever a nation. 11 So I will punish Moab, and then they will know that I am the Lord .”

Prophecy Against Edom

12 This is what the Lord God says: “The people of Edom turned against the family of Judah and tried to get even. The people of Edom are guilty.” 13 So the Lord God says: “I will punish Edom. I will destroy the people and the animals in Edom. I will destroy the whole country of Edom, all the way from Teman to Dedan. The Edomites will be killed in battle. 14 I will use my people Israel and get even against Edom. In this way the people of Israel will show my anger against Edom. Then the people of Edom will know that I punished them.” This is what the Lord God said.

Prophecy Against the Philistines

15 This is what the Lord God says: “The Philistines tried to get even. They were very cruel. They let their anger burn inside them too long.” 16 So the Lord God said, “I will punish the Philistines. Yes, I will destroy those people from Crete. I will completely destroy those people who live on the seacoast. 17 I will punish them—I will get even. I will let my anger teach them a lesson. Then they will know that I am the Lord !”

Footnotes

  1. Ezekiel 25:2 Son of man This was usually just a way of saying “a person” or “a human being.” Here, it is a way of addressing Ezekiel.
  2. Ezekiel 25:8 Seir Or “Edom.”

25 The word of the Lord came again unto me, saying,

2 Son of man, set thy face against the Ammonites, and prophesy against them;

3 And say unto the Ammonites, Hear the word of the Lord God ; Thus saith the Lord God ; Because thou saidst, Aha, against my sanctuary, when it was profaned; and against the land of Israel, when it was desolate; and against the house of Judah, when they went into captivity;

4 Behold, therefore I will deliver thee to the men of the east for a possession, and they shall set their palaces in thee, and make their dwellings in thee: they shall eat thy fruit, and they shall drink thy milk.

5 And I will make Rabbah a stable for camels, and the Ammonites a couching place for flocks: and ye shall know that I am the Lord .

6 For thus saith the Lord God ; Because thou hast clapped thine hands, and stamped with the feet, and rejoiced in heart with all thy despite against the land of Israel;

7 Behold, therefore I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and will deliver thee for a spoil to the heathen; and I will cut thee off from the people, and I will cause thee to perish out of the countries: I will destroy thee; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord .

8 Thus saith the Lord God ; Because that Moab and Seir do say, Behold, the house of Judah is like unto all the heathen;

9 Therefore, behold, I will open the side of Moab from the cities, from his cities which are on his frontiers, the glory of the country, Bethjeshimoth, Baalmeon, and Kiriathaim,

10 Unto the men of the east with the Ammonites, and will give them in possession, that the Ammonites may not be remembered among the nations.

11 And I will execute judgments upon Moab; and they shall know that I am the Lord .

12 Thus saith the Lord God ; Because that Edom hath dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and hath greatly offended, and revenged himself upon them;

13 Therefore thus saith the Lord God ; I will also stretch out mine hand upon Edom, and will cut off man and beast from it; and I will make it desolate from Teman; and they of Dedan shall fall by the sword.

14 And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom by the hand of my people Israel: and they shall do in Edom according to mine anger and according to my fury; and they shall know my vengeance, saith the Lord God .

15 Thus saith the Lord God ; Because the Philistines have dealt by revenge, and have taken vengeance with a despiteful heart, to destroy it for the old hatred;

16 Therefore thus saith the Lord God ; Behold, I will stretch out mine hand upon the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethims, and destroy the remnant of the sea coast.

17 And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the Lord , when I shall lay my vengeance upon them.

Judgment on Gentile Nations—Ammon

25 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, set your face against the ( A ) sons of Ammon and prophesy against them, 3 and say to the sons of Ammon, ‘Hear the word of the Lord [ a ] God ! This is what the Lord God says: “Because you said, ‘ ( B ) Aha!’ against My sanctuary when it was profaned, and against the land of Israel when it was made desolate, and against the house of Judah when they went into exile, 4 therefore, behold, I am going to give you to the [ b ] ( C ) people of the east as a possession, and they will set up their encampments among you and make their dwellings among you; they will ( D ) eat your fruit and drink your milk. 5 I will make ( E ) Rabbah a pasture for camels, and the sons of Ammon a resting place for flocks. Then you will know that I am the Lord .” 6 For this is what the Lord God says: “Because you have ( F ) clapped your hands and stamped your feet, and have ( G ) rejoiced with all the malice in your soul against the land of Israel, 7 therefore, behold, I have ( H ) reached out with My hand against you and I will give you as ( I ) plunder to the nations. And I will ( J ) cut you off from the peoples and ( K ) eliminate you from the lands. I will exterminate you. So you will ( L ) know that I am the Lord .”

Moab

8 ‘The Lord God says this: “Because ( M ) Moab and Seir say, ‘Behold, the house of Judah is like all the nations,’ 9 therefore, behold, I am going to [ c ] deprive the flank of Moab of its cities, of its cities [ d ] which are on its frontiers, the glory of the land, ( N ) Beth-jeshimoth, ( O ) Baal-meon, and ( P ) Kiriathaim; 10 and I will give it as a possession along with the sons of Ammon to the [ e ] ( Q ) people of the east, so that the sons of Ammon will not be remembered among the nations. 11 So I will execute judgments on Moab, and they will know that I am the Lord .”

Edom

12 ‘The Lord God says this: “Because ( R ) Edom has acted against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has incurred great guilt, and avenged themselves upon them,” 13 therefore this is what the Lord God says: “I will also ( S ) reach out with My hand against Edom and ( T ) eliminate human and animal life from it. And I will turn it into ruins; from ( U ) Teman even to ( V ) Dedan they will fall by the sword. 14 And ( W ) I will inflict My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel. Therefore, they will act in Edom ( X ) in accordance with My anger and My wrath; so they will know My vengeance,” declares the Lord God .

Philistia

15 ‘This is what the Lord God says: “Because the Philistines have acted in ( Y ) revenge, and have taken vengeance with malice in their souls to destroy with everlasting hostility,” 16 therefore this is what the Lord God says: “Behold, I am going to ( Z ) reach out with My hand against the Philistines and eliminate the ( AA ) Cherethites; and I will destroy the remnant of the seacoast. 17 I will execute great vengeance on them with wrathful rebukes; and they will ( AB ) know that I am the Lord , when I inflict My vengeance on them.”’”

A Prophecy Against Ammon

25 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, set your face against ( A ) the Ammonites ( B ) and prophesy against them. ( C ) 3 Say to them, ‘Hear the word of the Sovereign Lord . This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you said “Aha! ( D ) ” over my sanctuary when it was desecrated ( E ) and over the land of Israel when it was laid waste and over the people of Judah when they went into exile, ( F ) 4 therefore I am going to give you to the people of the East ( G ) as a possession. They will set up their camps ( H ) and pitch their tents among you; they will eat your fruit and drink your milk. ( I ) 5 I will turn Rabbah ( J ) into a pasture for camels and Ammon into a resting place for sheep. ( K ) Then you will know that I am the Lord . 6 For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you have clapped your hands ( L ) and stamped your feet, rejoicing with all the malice of your heart against the land of Israel, ( M ) 7 therefore I will stretch out my hand ( N ) against you and give you as plunder ( O ) to the nations. I will wipe you out from among the nations and exterminate you from the countries. I will destroy ( P ) you, and you will know that I am the Lord . ( Q ) ’”

A Prophecy Against Moab

8 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because Moab ( R ) and Seir ( S ) said, “Look, Judah has become like all the other nations,” 9 therefore I will expose the flank of Moab, beginning at its frontier towns—Beth Jeshimoth ( T ) , Baal Meon ( U ) and Kiriathaim ( V ) —the glory of that land. 10 I will give Moab along with the Ammonites to the people of the East as a possession, so that the Ammonites will not be remembered ( W ) among the nations; 11 and I will inflict punishment on Moab. Then they will know that I am the Lord .’” ( X )

A Prophecy Against Edom

12 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because Edom ( Y ) took revenge on Judah and became very guilty by doing so, 13 therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will stretch out my hand ( Z ) against Edom and kill both man and beast. ( AA ) I will lay it waste, and from Teman ( AB ) to Dedan ( AC ) they will fall by the sword. ( AD ) 14 I will take vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel, and they will deal with Edom in accordance with my anger ( AE ) and my wrath; they will know my vengeance, declares the Sovereign Lord .’” ( AF )

A Prophecy Against Philistia

15 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because the Philistines ( AG ) acted in vengeance and took revenge with malice ( AH ) in their hearts, and with ancient hostility sought to destroy Judah, 16 therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am about to stretch out my hand against the Philistines, ( AI ) and I will wipe out the Kerethites ( AJ ) and destroy those remaining along the coast. ( AK ) 17 I will carry out great vengeance ( AL ) on them and punish ( AM ) them in my wrath. Then they will know that I am the Lord , ( AN ) when I take vengeance on them. ( AO ) ’”
