24 The Lord gave this message to me on the tenth day of the tenth month in the ninth year: 2 ‘Son of man, remember this day. Write it down. On this day, the king of Babylon is starting to attack Jerusalem. 3 Tell a story to these people who refuse to obey me. Say to them, “This is what the Almighty Lord says:
Put the pot on the fire. Put it there now.
Pour some water into the pot.
4 Put the pieces of meat into it.
Put in all the good pieces of meat.
Put in the leg and the shoulder.
Fill it with all the best bones.
5 Use meat and bones from the best sheep.
Put more wood on the fire under the pot.
Cause the water in the pot to boil well.
Cook the bones and the meat.
6 This is what the Almighty Lord says:
Terrible trouble will come to the city that is full of murderers!
It is like a pot that has become dirty.
Nobody has tried to clean it.
Take out each piece of meat, one by one.
No piece is special.
7 You can see the blood of people that men killed in the city.
It lies on the rocks where everyone can see it.
Those murderers did not leave the blood on the ground,
where dirt would hide it.
8 I have put the blood on the rocks where everyone can see it.
Nothing will be able to hide it.
When I see it, I am very angry.
I will punish the people of that city as they deserve.
9 So this is what the Almighty Lord says:
Terrible trouble will come to the city that is full of murderers!
I will put more wood on the fire to destroy it.
10 Yes, make a big heap of wood.
Make the fire burn hot! Cook the meat well!
Mix in some spices!
Let the bones burn.
11 Then put the empty pot on the coals of the fire.
Make the pot very hot, so that its metal is bright red.
Burn all the dirt to remove it.
Make the pot clean again!
12 Yes, I have tried to make it clean.
But the disgusting dirt is still there.
So throw the pot and all its dirt on the fire!
13 The dirt on the pot shows the disgusting things that you do. I tried to remove those wicked things to make you clean, but you would not let me do that. So I will punish you until I am no longer angry with you. You will not be clean until that happens.
14 I, the Lord have said what I will do. Now I will do it! The time for your punishment has come! I will not change my mind. I will not be kind to you. I will not be sorry for you. I will judge you as you deserve for the things that you have done. That is what the Almighty Lord says.” ’
15 The Lord gave me this message: 16 ‘Son of man, I will suddenly take away from you the one person who makes you happy. But you must not weep. Do not let people see that you are sad. 17 Cry inside yourself but do not cry aloud. Do not show that you are sad because someone has died. Do not remove the cloth from your head. Keep your shoes on your feet. Do not cover the lower part of your face. Do not eat the food that people eat at funerals.’ [ a ]
18 That morning I spoke to the people. In the evening of that day, my wife died. The next morning I did what the Lord had told me to do.
19 Then the people said to me, ‘Please tell us why you are doing these things. What are you trying to show us?’ 20 So I said to them, ‘The Lord gave this message to me:
21 Say to Israel's people, “This is what the Almighty Lord says: Listen! I will now make my holy place become unclean. It is the place that makes you very proud. You love it because it is so beautiful. But now enemy soldiers will kill your sons and daughters that you left in Jerusalem. 22 Then you will do the same things that I have done. You will not cover the lower part of your face. You will not eat special food that people eat at funerals. 23 You will still wear your cloths on your heads. You will wear your shoes on your feet. You will not cry aloud or weep. You will suffer and you will be weak because of the punishment for your sins. You will cry quietly among yourselves. 24 Ezekiel is an example to you. You must do the same as he has done when his wife died. When this happens, you will know that I am the Almighty Lord .” [ b ]
25 Son of man, I will soon take away from them Jerusalem's great temple. It is the beautiful place that has made them very happy. They are very proud of it. They love to look at it. I will also take away their sons and daughters. 26 On the day when that happens, a man will run away from the battle in Jerusalem. He will come here to tell you the news. 27 At that time, you will be able to speak again. [ c ] You will talk with that man. You will no longer have to be quiet. You will be an example to the people, and they will know that I am the Lord . ’
24 The word of the Lord came to me. This was on the tenth day of the tenth month in the ninth year of exile. [ a ] He said, 2 “Son of man, [ b ] write today’s date and this note: ‘On this date the army of the king of Babylon surrounded Jerusalem.’ 3 The people there refuse to obey me. I have a story with a message for them. Tell them, ‘This is what the Lord God says:
“‘Put the pot on the fire.
Put on the pot and pour in the water.
4 Put in the pieces of meat.
Put in every good piece, the thighs and the shoulders.
Fill the pot with the best bones.
5 Use the best animals in the flock.
Pile the wood under the pot,
and boil the pieces of meat.
Boil the soup until even the bones are cooked.
6 “‘So this is what the Lord God says:
It will be bad for Jerusalem.
It will be bad for that city of murderers.
Jerusalem is like a pot with rust on it,
and those spots of rust cannot be removed!
That pot is not clean, and the rust cannot be removed,
so the meat must be thrown out and not divided among the priests.
7 Jerusalem is like a pot with rust on it.
This is because the blood from the murders is still there!
She put the blood on the bare rock.
She did not pour the blood on the ground and cover it with dirt. [ c ]
8 I put her blood on the bare rock
so that it would not be covered.
I did this so that people would become angry
and punish her for killing innocent people.
9 “‘So this is what the Lord God says:
It will be bad for that city of murderers!
I will pile up plenty of wood for the fire.
10 Put plenty of wood under the pot.
Light the fire.
Cook the meat until it is well done.
Mix in the spices, [ d ]
and let the bones be burned up.
11 Then let the pot stand empty on the coals.
Let it become so hot that its stains [ e ] begin to glow.
Those stains will be melted away.
The rust will be destroyed.
12 “‘Jerusalem might work hard
to scrub away her stains.
But that ‘rust’ will not go away!
Only the fire of punishment will remove it.
13 “‘You sinned against me
and became stained with sin.
I wanted to wash you and make you clean,
but the stains would not come out.
I will not try washing you again
until my hot anger is finished with you!
14 “‘I am the Lord . I said your punishment would come, and I will make it happen. I will not hold back the punishment or feel sorry for you. I will punish you for the evil things you did. This is what the Lord God said.’”
15 Then the word of the Lord came to me. He said, 16 “Son of man, you love your wife very much, but I am going to take her away from you. Your wife will die suddenly, but you must not show your sadness. You must not cry loudly. You will cry and your tears will fall, 17 but you must mourn quietly. Dress as you normally do; wear your turban and sandals; don’t cover your mustache, and don’t eat the food people normally eat when someone dies.”
18 The next morning I told the people what God had said. That evening, my wife died. The next morning I did what God commanded. 19 Then the people said to me, “Why are you doing this? What does it mean?”
20 Then I said to them, “The word of the Lord came to me. He told me 21 to speak to the family of Israel. The Lord God said, ‘Look, I will destroy my holy place. You are proud of that place and sing songs of praise about it. You love to see it. You really love that place. But I will destroy it, and your children that you left behind will be killed in battle. 22 But you will do the same things that I have done about my dead wife. You will not cover your mustache or eat the food people normally eat when someone dies. 23 You will wear your turbans and your sandals. You will not show your sadness publicly or cry publicly, but you will waste away with guilt and talk to each other quietly about your grief. 24 So Ezekiel is an example for you. You will do all the same things he did. That time of punishment will come, and then you will know that I am the Lord God .’”
25-26 The Lord said, “Son of man, I will take away the place that makes the people feel safe—Jerusalem, that beautiful city that makes them so happy. They really love that place. They love to look at it. But I will take it away from them, and I will also take their children. On that day one of the survivors will come to you with the bad news about Jerusalem. 27 That same day you will be able to talk to the messenger. You will not be silent anymore. This will be a sign to the people, and they will know that I am the Lord .”
24 Again in the ninth year, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, write thee the name of the day, even of this same day: the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem this same day.
3 And utter a parable unto the rebellious house, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God ; Set on a pot, set it on, and also pour water into it:
4 Gather the pieces thereof into it, even every good piece, the thigh, and the shoulder; fill it with the choice bones.
5 Take the choice of the flock, and burn also the bones under it, and make it boil well, and let them seethe the bones of it therein.
6 Wherefore thus saith the Lord God ; Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose scum is therein, and whose scum is not gone out of it! bring it out piece by piece; let no lot fall upon it.
7 For her blood is in the midst of her; she set it upon the top of a rock; she poured it not upon the ground, to cover it with dust;
8 That it might cause fury to come up to take vengeance; I have set her blood upon the top of a rock, that it should not be covered.
9 Therefore thus saith the Lord God ; Woe to the bloody city! I will even make the pile for fire great.
10 Heap on wood, kindle the fire, consume the flesh, and spice it well, and let the bones be burned.
11 Then set it empty upon the coals thereof, that the brass of it may be hot, and may burn, and that the filthiness of it may be molten in it, that the scum of it may be consumed.
12 She hath wearied herself with lies, and her great scum went not forth out of her: her scum shall be in the fire.
13 In thy filthiness is lewdness: because I have purged thee, and thou wast not purged, thou shalt not be purged from thy filthiness any more, till I have caused my fury to rest upon thee.
14 I the Lord have spoken it: it shall come to pass, and I will do it; I will not go back, neither will I spare, neither will I repent; according to thy ways, and according to thy doings, shall they judge thee, saith the Lord God .
15 Also the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
16 Son of man, behold, I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes with a stroke: yet neither shalt thou mourn nor weep, neither shall thy tears run down.
17 Forbear to cry, make no mourning for the dead, bind the tire of thine head upon thee, and put on thy shoes upon thy feet, and cover not thy lips, and eat not the bread of men.
18 So I spake unto the people in the morning: and at even my wife died; and I did in the morning as I was commanded.
19 And the people said unto me, Wilt thou not tell us what these things are to us, that thou doest so?
20 Then I answered them, The word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
21 Speak unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God ; Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the excellency of your strength, the desire of your eyes, and that which your soul pitieth; and your sons and your daughters whom ye have left shall fall by the sword.
22 And ye shall do as I have done: ye shall not cover your lips, nor eat the bread of men.
23 And your tires shall be upon your heads, and your shoes upon your feet: ye shall not mourn nor weep; but ye shall pine away for your iniquities, and mourn one toward another.
24 Thus Ezekiel is unto you a sign: according to all that he hath done shall ye do: and when this cometh, ye shall know that I am the Lord God .
25 Also, thou son of man, shall it not be in the day when I take from them their strength, the joy of their glory, the desire of their eyes, and that whereupon they set their minds, their sons and their daughters,
26 That he that escapeth in that day shall come unto thee, to cause thee to hear it with thine ears?
27 In that day shall thy mouth be opened to him which is escaped, and thou shalt speak, and be no more dumb: and thou shalt be a sign unto them; and they shall know that I am the Lord .
24 Now the word of the Lord came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth of the month, saying, 2 “Son of man, write the name of the day, this very day. The king of Babylon [ a ] has ( A ) laid siege to Jerusalem this very day. 3 Present a ( B ) parable to the ( C ) rebellious house and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord [ b ] God says:
“Put on the ( D ) pot, put it on and also pour water into it;
4 [ c ] ( E ) Put in it the pieces of meat,
Every good piece, the thigh and the shoulder;
Fill it with choice bones.
5 Take the ( F ) choicest of the flock,
And also stack [ d ] wood under [ e ] the pot.
Make it boil vigorously.
Also boil its bones in it.”
6 ‘Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:
“Woe to the ( G ) bloody city,
To the pot in which there is rust
And whose rust has not gone out of it!
Take out of it piece after piece,
[ f ] Without making a choice.
7 For her blood is in her midst;
She placed it on the bare rock;
She did not ( H ) pour it on the ground
To cover it with dust.
8 So that it may ( I ) cause wrath to come up to take vengeance,
I have put her blood on the bare rock,
So that it will not be covered.”
9 Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:
“ ( J ) Woe to the bloody city!
I also will make the wood pile great.
10 Heap on the wood, kindle the fire,
[ g ] Cook the meat thoroughly
And mix in the spices,
And let the bones be burned up.
11 Then ( K ) set it empty on its burning coals
So that it may be hot
And its bronze may [ h ] glow,
And its ( L ) filthiness may be melted in it,
Its rust eliminated.
12 She has ( M ) wearied Me with work,
Yet her great rust has not gone from her;
Let her rust be in the fire!
13 In your filthiness is outrageous sin.
Because I would have cleansed you,
Yet you are ( N ) not clean,
You will not be cleansed from your filthiness again
Until I have [ i ] ( O ) expended My wrath on you.
14 I, the Lord , have spoken; it is ( P ) coming and I will act. I will not overlook, I will not ( Q ) pity, and I will not be sorry; ( R ) according to your ways and according to your deeds [ j ] I will judge you,” declares the Lord God .’”
15 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 16 “Son of man, behold, I am about to take from you ( S ) what is precious to your eyes with a ( T ) fatal blow; but you shall not ( U ) mourn and you shall not weep, and your ( V ) tears shall not come. 17 Groan silently; do ( W ) no mourning for the dead. Bind on your turban and put your sandals on your feet, and do not [ k ] cover your mustache, and ( X ) do not eat the [ l ] bread of other people.” 18 So I spoke to the people in the morning, and in the evening my wife died. And in the morning I did as I was commanded. 19 And the people said to me, “Will you not tell us what these things mean for us, that you are doing?” 20 Then I said to them, “The word of the Lord came to me, saying, 21 ‘Speak to the house of Israel, “This is what the Lord God says: ‘Behold, I am about to profane My sanctuary, the pride of your power, ( Y ) that which is precious in your eyes and the longing of your soul; and your ( Z ) sons and your daughters whom you have left behind will fall by the sword. 22 And you will do just as I have done; you will not [ m ] cover your mustache, and you will not eat the [ n ] bread of other people. 23 Your turbans will be on your heads, and your sandals on your feet. You ( AA ) will not mourn and you will not weep; but ( AB ) you will rot away in your guilty deeds, and you will groan [ o ] to one another. 24 So Ezekiel will be a ( AC ) sign to you; according to all that he has done, you will do. When it comes, then you will know that I am the Lord God .’”
25 ‘As for you, son of man, will it not be on the day when I take from them their ( AD ) stronghold, the joy of their splendor, that which is precious in their eyes and their [ p ] heart’s longing, their sons and their daughters, 26 that on that day the one who ( AE ) escapes will come to you with information for your ears? 27 On that day your ( AF ) mouth will be opened to him who escaped, and you will speak and no longer be silenced. So you will be a sign to them, and they will know that I am the Lord .’”
24 In the ninth year, in the tenth month on the tenth day, the word of the Lord came to me: ( A ) 2 “Son of man, record ( B ) this date, this very date, because the king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day. ( C ) 3 Tell this rebellious people ( D ) a parable ( E ) and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“‘Put on the cooking pot; ( F ) put it on
and pour water into it.
4 Put into it the pieces of meat,
all the choice pieces—the leg and the shoulder.
Fill it with the best of these bones; ( G )
5 take the pick of the flock. ( H )
Pile wood beneath it for the bones;
bring it to a boil
and cook the bones in it. ( I )
6 “‘For this is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“‘Woe ( J ) to the city of bloodshed, ( K )
to the pot now encrusted,
whose deposit will not go away!
Take the meat out piece by piece
in whatever order ( L ) it comes. ( M )
7 “‘For the blood she shed is in her midst:
She poured it on the bare rock;
she did not pour it on the ground,
where the dust would cover it. ( N )
8 To stir up wrath and take revenge
I put her blood on the bare rock,
so that it would not be covered.
9 “‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“‘Woe to the city of bloodshed!
I, too, will pile the wood high.
10 So heap on the wood
and kindle the fire.
Cook the meat well,
mixing in the spices;
and let the bones be charred.
11 Then set the empty pot on the coals
till it becomes hot and its copper glows,
so that its impurities may be melted
and its deposit burned away. ( O )
12 It has frustrated all efforts;
its heavy deposit has not been removed,
not even by fire.
13 “‘Now your impurity is lewdness. Because I tried to cleanse you but you would not be cleansed ( P ) from your impurity, you will not be clean again until my wrath against you has subsided. ( Q )
14 “‘I the Lord have spoken. ( R ) The time has come for me to act. ( S ) I will not hold back; I will not have pity, ( T ) nor will I relent. ( U ) You will be judged according to your conduct and your actions, ( V ) declares the Sovereign Lord . ( W ) ’”
15 The word of the Lord came to me: 16 “Son of man, with one blow ( X ) I am about to take away from you the delight of your eyes. ( Y ) Yet do not lament or weep or shed any tears. ( Z ) 17 Groan quietly; ( AA ) do not mourn for the dead. Keep your turban ( AB ) fastened and your sandals ( AC ) on your feet; do not cover your mustache and beard ( AD ) or eat the customary food of mourners. ( AE ) ”
18 So I spoke to the people in the morning, and in the evening my wife died. The next morning I did as I had been commanded. ( AF )
19 Then the people asked me, “Won’t you tell us what these things have to do with us? ( AG ) Why are you acting like this?”
20 So I said to them, “The word of the Lord came to me: 21 Say to the people of Israel, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am about to desecrate my sanctuary ( AH ) —the stronghold in which you take pride, ( AI ) the delight of your eyes, ( AJ ) the object of your affection. The sons and daughters ( AK ) you left behind will fall by the sword. ( AL ) 22 And you will do as I have done. You will not cover your mustache and beard ( AM ) or eat the customary food of mourners. ( AN ) 23 You will keep your turbans ( AO ) on your heads and your sandals ( AP ) on your feet. You will not mourn ( AQ ) or weep but will waste away ( AR ) because of [ a ] your sins and groan among yourselves. ( AS ) 24 Ezekiel ( AT ) will be a sign ( AU ) to you; you will do just as he has done. When this happens, you will know that I am the Sovereign Lord .’
25 “And you, son of man, on the day I take away their stronghold, their joy and glory, the delight of their eyes, ( AV ) their heart’s desire, ( AW ) and their sons and daughters ( AX ) as well— 26 on that day a fugitive will come to tell you ( AY ) the news. 27 At that time your mouth will be opened; you will speak with him and will no longer be silent. ( AZ ) So you will be a sign to them, and they will know that I am the Lord . ( BA ) ”
