Ezekiel 10

God's glory leaves the temple

10 In the vision, I saw something that looked like a throne. It was made from a blue jewel called sapphire. It was above the roof and it was high over the heads of the cherubs. 2 The Lord said to the man who was wearing linen clothes, ‘Go between the wheels that are under the cherubs. Pick up some of the hot coals that are burning among the cherubs. Fill your hands with them. Then throw them everywhere over the city.’ Then the man did this, as I watched him.

3 The cherubs stood at the south side of the temple when the man went in among them. A cloud filled the inside yard of the temple. [ a ] 4 Then the Lord 's bright glory rose up. It went up from above the cherubs. It moved to the entrance of the temple. The cloud filled the temple. The bright glory of the Lord 's shone everywhere in the yard. 5 The noise of the cherubs' wings was very loud. It reached as far as the outside yard. The noise was like the voice of Almighty God when he speaks.

6 The Lord gave a command to the man who was wearing linen clothes. He said, ‘Go in among the cherubs. Take coals of fire from between the wheels.’ So the man went in and he stood beside one of the wheels.

7 Then one of the cherubs put his hand towards the fire which was among the cherubs. He took some coals from the fire. He put them into the hands of the man who was wearing linen clothes. The man took the coals and he went out. 8 (Under the wings of the cherubs I could see something that looked like human hands.)

9 In the vision, I saw four wheels beside the cherubs. There was one wheel at the side of each cherub. The wheels shone like bright jewels. 10 All the four wheels looked the same. Each wheel had another wheel that went across the middle of it. 11 When the cherubs moved, they could go forward in any of the four directions. They did not have to turn as they moved. When the head turned in a certain direction, they would move that way. They did not need to turn. 12 Eyes completely covered their bodies. This included their backs, their hands and their wings. Eyes also covered the edges of all the wheels. 13 I heard someone call the wheels, ‘wheels that turn very fast’. [ b ]

14 Each of the cherubs had four faces. One face was the face of a bull. The second face was the face of a man. The third face was a lion's face. And the fourth face was an eagle's face.

15 The cherubs rose up into the air. They were the same as the living things that I had seen beside the River Kebar. 16 When they moved, the wheels that were beside them also moved. When the cherubs lifted up their wings to fly into the air, the wheels moved beside them. 17 When the cherubs stood still, the wheels also stood still. And when the cherubs rose in the air, the wheels also rose with them. This was because the spirit of the living things was in the wheels.

18 Then the glory of the Lord moved away from the entrance of the temple. It stopped at a place above the cherubs. 19 Then the cherubs lifted up their wings and they rose up from the ground. The wheels also moved with them. I watched them do this. They stopped by the east gate of the Lord 's temple. The glory of Israel's God stayed above them. [ c ]

20 They were the same living things that I had seen beside the Kebar River when they were under Israel's God. I realized that they were cherubs. 21 Each of them had four faces and four wings. They had something with the shape of human hands under their wings. 22 They had the same four faces that I had seen beside the River Kebar. Each of them moved forward and they did not turn.

Footnotes

  1. 10:3 The temple had several yards around it. The inside yard was at the front of the temple building. It was a special place where only priests and Levites were allowed to go.
  2. 10:13 See Ezekiel 1:15-21 .
  3. 10:19 The Lord was Israel's God.

The Glory of the Lord Leaves the Temple

10 Then I looked up at the bowl [ a ] over the heads of the Cherub angels. The bowl looked clear blue like sapphire, and there was something that looked like a throne over it. 2 Then the one sitting on the throne said to the man dressed in linen clothes, [ b ] “Step into the area between the wheels [ c ] under the Cherub angels. Take a handful of the burning coals from between the Cherub angels and go throw them over the city of Jerusalem.”

The man walked past me. 3 The Cherub angels were standing in the area south [ d ] of the Temple as the man walked to them. The cloud filled the inner courtyard. 4 Then the Glory of the Lord rose up off the Cherub angels near the threshold of the door of the Temple. Then the cloud filled the Temple, and the bright light from the Glory of the Lord filled the whole courtyard. 5 The noise from the wings of the Cherub angels could be heard all the way out into the outer courtyard. The sound was very loud—like the thundering voice when God All-Powerful speaks.

6 God had given the man dressed in linen clothes a command. He had told him to go into the area between the wheels among the Cherub angels and get some hot coals. So the man went there and stood by the wheel. 7 One of the Cherub angels reached out his hand and took some of the hot coals from the area between the Cherub angels. He poured the coals into the man’s hands, and the man left. 8 (The Cherub angels had what looked like human arms under their wings.)

9 Then I noticed that there were four wheels. There was one wheel by each Cherub angel, and the wheels looked like a clear yellow jewel. 10 There were four wheels, and they all looked the same. They looked like there was a wheel in a wheel. 11 They could go in any direction when they moved, but the Cherub angels did not turn around when they moved. They went in the direction that the head was looking. They did not turn around when they moved. 12 There were eyes all over their bodies. There were eyes on their backs, on their arms, on their wings, and on their wheels—on all four wheels! 13 These wheels were what I heard called, “the area between the wheels.”

14-15 Each Cherub angel had four faces. The first was the face of a Cherub, [ e ] the second was the face of a man, the third was a lion’s face, and the fourth was an eagle’s face. (These Cherub angels were the living beings I saw in the vision by the Kebar Canal. [ f ] )

Then the Cherub angels rose into the air, 16 and the wheels rose with them. When the Cherub angels raised their wings and flew into the air, not even the wheels turned around. 17 If they flew into the air, the wheels went with them. If they stood still, so did the wheels, because the spirit [ g ] of the living being was in them.

18 Then the Glory of the Lord rose from the threshold of the Temple, moved to the place over the Cherub angels, and stopped there. 19 Then the Cherub angels raised their wings and flew into the air. I saw them leave. The wheels went with them. Then they stopped at the East Gate of the Lord ’s Temple. The Glory of the God of Israel was in the air above them.

20 These were the living beings under the Glory of the God of Israel in the vision at the Kebar Canal, and now I realized that they were Cherub angels. 21 Each living being had four faces, four wings, and something that looked like human arms under their wings. 22 The faces of the Cherub angels were the same as the four faces on the living beings in the vision by the Kebar Canal. They all looked straight ahead in the direction they were going.

10 Then I looked, and, behold, in the firmament that was above the head of the cherubims there appeared over them as it were a sapphire stone, as the appearance of the likeness of a throne.

2 And he spake unto the man clothed with linen, and said, Go in between the wheels, even under the cherub, and fill thine hand with coals of fire from between the cherubims, and scatter them over the city. And he went in in my sight.

3 Now the cherubims stood on the right side of the house, when the man went in; and the cloud filled the inner court.

4 Then the glory of the Lord went up from the cherub, and stood over the threshold of the house; and the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was full of the brightness of the Lord 's glory.

5 And the sound of the cherubims' wings was heard even to the outer court, as the voice of the Almighty God when he speaketh.

6 And it came to pass, that when he had commanded the man clothed with linen, saying, Take fire from between the wheels, from between the cherubims; then he went in, and stood beside the wheels.

7 And one cherub stretched forth his hand from between the cherubims unto the fire that was between the cherubims, and took thereof, and put it into the hands of him that was clothed with linen: who took it, and went out.

8 And there appeared in the cherubims the form of a man's hand under their wings.

9 And when I looked, behold the four wheels by the cherubims, one wheel by one cherub, and another wheel by another cherub: and the appearance of the wheels was as the colour of a beryl stone.

10 And as for their appearances, they four had one likeness, as if a wheel had been in the midst of a wheel.

11 When they went, they went upon their four sides; they turned not as they went, but to the place whither the head looked they followed it; they turned not as they went.

12 And their whole body, and their backs, and their hands, and their wings, and the wheels, were full of eyes round about, even the wheels that they four had.

13 As for the wheels, it was cried unto them in my hearing, O wheel.

14 And every one had four faces: the first face was the face of a cherub, and the second face was the face of a man, and the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.

15 And the cherubims were lifted up. This is the living creature that I saw by the river of Chebar.

16 And when the cherubims went, the wheels went by them: and when the cherubims lifted up their wings to mount up from the earth, the same wheels also turned not from beside them.

17 When they stood, these stood; and when they were lifted up, these lifted up themselves also: for the spirit of the living creature was in them.

18 Then the glory of the Lord departed from off the threshold of the house, and stood over the cherubims.

19 And the cherubims lifted up their wings, and mounted up from the earth in my sight: when they went out, the wheels also were beside them, and every one stood at the door of the east gate of the Lord 's house; and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above.

20 This is the living creature that I saw under the God of Israel by the river of Chebar; and I knew that they were the cherubims.

21 Every one had four faces apiece, and every one four wings; and the likeness of the hands of a man was under their wings.

22 And the likeness of their faces was the same faces which I saw by the river of Chebar, their appearances and themselves: they went every one straight forward.

Vision of God’s Glory Departing from the Temple

10 Then I looked, and behold, in the [ a ] ( A ) expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim something like a ( B ) sapphire stone, in appearance resembling a ( C ) throne, appeared above them. 2 And He spoke to the man clothed in linen and said, “Enter between the ( D ) whirling wheels under the [ b ] cherubim and fill your hands with ( E ) coals of fire from between the cherubim, and scatter them over the city.” And he entered in my sight.

3 Now the cherubim were standing on the right side of the [ c ] temple when the man entered, and the cloud filled the ( F ) inner courtyard. 4 Then the ( G ) glory of the Lord went up from the cherub to the threshold of the temple, and the ( H ) temple was filled with the cloud, and the courtyard was filled with the ( I ) brightness of the glory of the Lord . 5 Moreover, the sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard as far as the outer courtyard, like the ( J ) voice of [ d ] God Almighty when He speaks.

6 And it came about when He commanded the man clothed in linen, saying, “Take fire from between the whirling wheels, from between the cherubim,” he entered and stood beside a wheel. 7 Then the cherub reached out with his hand from between the cherubim to the fire which was between the cherubim, took some coals and put them into the hands of the one clothed in linen; and he took them and went out. 8 The cherubim appeared to have something like a human hand under their wings.

9 Then I looked, and behold, ( K ) four wheels beside the cherubim, one wheel beside each cherub; and the appearance of the wheels was like the gleam of a [ e ] ( L ) Tarshish stone. 10 And as for their appearance, all four of them had the same likeness, as if one wheel were within another wheel. 11 When they moved, they went ( M ) in any of their four [ f ] directions without turning as they went; but they followed in the direction which [ g ] they faced, without turning as they went. 12 And their ( N ) whole body, their backs, their hands, their wings and the ( O ) wheels were [ h ] covered with eyes all around, the wheels belonging to all four of them. 13 The wheels were called, [ i ] as I heard, the [ j ] whirling wheels. 14 And ( P ) each one had four faces. The first face was the face of a cherub, the second face was the face of a human, the third, the face of a lion, and the fourth, the face of an eagle.

15 Then the cherubim rose up. They are the ( Q ) living beings that I saw by the river Chebar. 16 Now when the cherubim moved, the wheels would move beside them; also when the cherubim lifted up their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels themselves would not turn away from beside them. 17 When [ k ] the cherubim ( R ) stood still, [ l ] the wheels would stand still; and when they rose up, [ m ] the wheels would rise with them, because the spirit of the living beings was in them.

18 Then the glory of the Lord departed from the threshold of the temple and stood ( S ) over the cherubim. 19 When ( T ) the cherubim departed, they lifted their wings and rose up from the ground in my sight with the wheels beside them; and they stood still at the entrance of the east gate of the Lord s house, and the glory of the God of Israel [ n ] hovered over them.

20 These are the ( U ) living beings that I saw beneath the God of Israel by ( V ) the river Chebar; so I knew that they were cherubim. 21 ( W ) Each one had four faces and each one four wings, and beneath their wings was the form of human hands. 22 As for the likeness of their faces, they were the same faces whose appearance I had seen by the river Chebar. Each one went straight ahead.

God’s Glory Departs From the Temple

10 I looked, and I saw the likeness of a throne ( A ) of lapis lazuli ( B ) above the vault ( C ) that was over the heads of the cherubim. ( D ) 2 The Lord said to the man clothed in linen, ( E ) “Go in among the wheels ( F ) beneath the cherubim. Fill ( G ) your hands with burning coals ( H ) from among the cherubim and scatter them over the city.” And as I watched, he went in.

3 Now the cherubim were standing on the south side of the temple when the man went in, and a cloud filled the inner court. 4 Then the glory of the Lord ( I ) rose from above the cherubim and moved to the threshold of the temple. The cloud filled the temple, and the court was full of the radiance of the glory of the Lord . 5 The sound of the wings of the cherubim could be heard as far away as the outer court, like the voice ( J ) of God Almighty [ a ] when he speaks. ( K )

6 When the Lord commanded the man in linen, “Take fire from among the wheels, ( L ) from among the cherubim,” the man went in and stood beside a wheel. 7 Then one of the cherubim reached out his hand to the fire ( M ) that was among them. He took up some of it and put it into the hands of the man in linen, who took it and went out. 8 (Under the wings of the cherubim could be seen what looked like human hands.) ( N )

9 I looked, and I saw beside the cherubim four wheels, one beside each of the cherubim; the wheels sparkled like topaz. ( O ) 10 As for their appearance, the four of them looked alike; each was like a wheel intersecting a wheel. 11 As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the cherubim faced; the wheels did not turn about [ b ] as the cherubim went. The cherubim went in whatever direction the head faced, without turning as they went. 12 Their entire bodies, including their backs, their hands and their wings, were completely full of eyes, ( P ) as were their four wheels. ( Q ) 13 I heard the wheels being called “the whirling wheels.” 14 Each of the cherubim ( R ) had four faces: ( S ) One face was that of a cherub, the second the face of a human being, the third the face of a lion, ( T ) and the fourth the face of an eagle. ( U )

15 Then the cherubim rose upward. These were the living creatures ( V ) I had seen by the Kebar River. ( W ) 16 When the cherubim moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the cherubim spread their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels did not leave their side. 17 When the cherubim stood still, they also stood still; and when the cherubim rose, they rose with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in them. ( X )

18 Then the glory ( Y ) of the Lord departed from over the threshold of the temple and stopped above the cherubim. ( Z ) 19 While I watched, the cherubim spread their wings and rose from the ground, and as they went, the wheels went with them. ( AA ) They stopped at the entrance of the east gate of the Lord ’s house, and the glory ( AB ) of the God of Israel was above them.

20 These were the living creatures I had seen beneath the God of Israel by the Kebar River, ( AC ) and I realized that they were cherubim. 21 Each had four faces ( AD ) and four wings, ( AE ) and under their wings was what looked like human hands. 22 Their faces had the same appearance as those I had seen by the Kebar River. ( AF ) Each one went straight ahead.
