Exodus 40

Moses puts up the tabernacle

40 Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 ‘On the first day of the first month, put up the tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting. [ a ] 3 Put the Covenant Box in the tabernacle and hide it behind the special curtain. 4 Bring in the special table and put the dishes on it. Then bring in the lampstand. Fix its lamps on it. 5 Put the gold altar for incense in front of the Covenant Box. Hang the curtain that will be at the entrance to the tabernacle.

6 Put the altar for burnt offerings in front of the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. 7 Put the large bowl for water between the Tent of Meeting and the altar. Put water in the bowl. 8 Hang the curtains around the yard of the tabernacle, as well as the curtain at the entrance to the yard.

9 Take the special oil that makes things holy. Pour some oil on the tabernacle and on everything that is in it. Offer the tabernacle and all its things to God, and then it will be holy. 10 Then pour some oil on the altar for burnt offerings and all its tools. Offer it all to God, and then it will be completely holy. 11 Pour some oil on the large bowl for water and on its base to offer them to God.

12 Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. Wash them with water. 13 Then dress Aaron in the special clothes for the priest. Pour some of the special oil on his head. Offer him to me to serve me as my priest. 14 Also bring his sons and dress them in the special long shirts. 15 Pour some oil on their heads, as you did to their father. Then they too may serve me as my priests. In this way, they and their descendants will always continue to serve me as priests.’

16 Moses did all these things, as the Lord had commanded him.

17 So they put up the tabernacle on the first day of the first month. It was in the second year after they had left Egypt. 18 When Moses put up the tabernacle, he first put the metal bases in their right places. Then he put up the boards, the bars to hold them, and the poles. 19 Then he covered the tabernacle with the tent and he put the leather covers over the tent. He did this in the way that the Lord had commanded him.

20 Moses took the two flat stones with God's special commands on them. He put them inside the Covenant Box. He put the poles through the rings on the box. He put the special lid on top of the box. 21 Then he brought the Covenant Box into the tabernacle. He hung the special curtain to hide it, so that nobody could see it. He did this in the way that the Lord had commanded him.

22 Moses put the special table inside the Tent of Meeting. He put it outside the curtain, on the north side of the Holy Place. 23 He put the special bread on the table as an offering to the Lord , as the Lord had commanded him.

24 He also put the lampstand in the Tent of Meeting. He put it on the south side of the Holy Place, opposite the table. 25 Then he put the lamps in their places in front of the Lord , as the Lord had commanded him.

26 Moses put the gold altar in the Tent of Meeting, outside the curtain that hid the Covenant Box. 27 He burned sweet incense on it, as the Lord had commanded him. 28 Then he hung the curtain at the entrance of the tent.

29 He put the altar for burnt offerings outside the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. He offered a burnt offering and a grain offering on it, as the Lord had commanded him.

30 Moses put the large bowl for water between the Tent of Meeting and the altar. He put water in it for the priests to wash themselves. 31 Moses and Aaron and Aaron's sons used the water to wash their hands and their feet. 32 They washed themselves every time that they went into the Tent of Meeting. They also washed themselves before they went to offer sacrifices at the altar. They did what the Lord had commanded Moses to do.

33 Moses also made the yard around the tabernacle and round the altar. He hung the curtain at the entrance of the yard.

In that way, Moses finished the work.

The glory of the Lord

34 Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting. The glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 35 Moses could not go into the Tent of Meeting because of the cloud and the bright glory of the Lord .

36 The Israelites followed the cloud during all their journeys. Every time that the cloud rose up from the tabernacle, they would continue on their journey. 37 But if the cloud remained on the tabernacle, the Israelites did not travel. They stayed where they were until the day when the cloud rose up. 38 So the cloud stayed over the tabernacle during the day, to show that the Lord was with them. During the night, there was fire in the cloud. All the Israelites could see the cloud during all their journeys.

Footnotes

  1. 40:2 The Tent of Meeting and the tabernacle usually mean the same tent. Sometimes the Tent of Meeting means only the tent itself and the tabernacle means the tent and the yard that were around it.

Moses Sets Up the Holy Tent

40 Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 “On the first day of the first month, set up the Holy Tent, that is, the Meeting Tent. 3 Put the Box of the Agreement in the Holy Tent. Cover the Box with the curtain. 4 Then bring in the table. Put the things on the table that should be there. Then put the lampstand in the Tent. Put the lamps on the lampstand in the right places. 5 Put the golden altar for offering incense in the Tent in front of the Box of the Agreement. Then put the curtain at the entrance to the Holy Tent.

6 “Put the altar for burning offerings in front of the entrance of the Holy Tent, that is, the Meeting Tent. 7 Put the bowl between the Meeting Tent and the altar. Put water in the bowl. 8 Set up the wall of curtains around the courtyard. Then put the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard.

9 “Use the anointing oil and anoint the Holy Tent and everything in it. When you put the oil on these things, you will make them holy. 10 Anoint the altar for burning offerings. Anoint everything on the altar. You will make the altar holy. It will be very holy. 11 Then anoint the bowl and the base under it to make these things holy.

12 “Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the Meeting Tent. Wash them with water. 13 Then put the special clothes on Aaron. Anoint him with the oil and make him holy. Then he can serve me as a priest. 14 Then put the clothes on his sons. 15 Anoint the sons in the same way you anointed their father. Then they can also serve me as priests. When you anoint them, they will become priests. That family will continue to be priests for all time to come.” 16 Moses obeyed the Lord. He did everything that the Lord commanded him.

17 So the Holy Tent was set up at the right time. It was the first day of the first month during the second year from the time they left Egypt. 18 Moses set up the Holy Tent just as the Lord had said. He put the bases down first. Then he put the frames on the bases. Then he put the braces on and set up the posts. 19 After that Moses put the outer tent over the Holy Tent. Then he put the covering over the outer tent. He did these things just as the Lord had commanded.

20 Moses took the Agreement and put it in the Holy Box. He put the poles on the Box and put the mercy-cover on it. 21 Then Moses put the Holy Box into the Holy Tent. He hung the curtain in the right place to protect it. In this way he protected the Box of the Agreement behind the curtain just as the Lord had commanded him. 22 Then Moses put the table in the Meeting Tent on the north side of the Holy Tent. He put it in the Holy Place, in front of the curtain. 23 Then he put the bread on the table before the Lord . He did this just as the Lord had commanded him. 24 Then Moses put the lampstand in the Meeting Tent on the south side of the Tent, across from the table. 25 Then Moses put the lamps on the lampstand before the Lord . He did this just as the Lord had commanded him.

26 Then Moses put the golden altar in the Meeting Tent, in front of the curtain. 27 Then he burned sweet-smelling incense on the altar. He did this as the Lord had commanded him. 28 Then Moses put the curtain at the entrance to the Holy Tent.

29 Moses put the altar for burning offerings at the entrance to the Holy Tent, that is, the Meeting Tent. Then Moses offered a burnt offering on that altar. He also offered grain offerings to the Lord. He did these things just as the Lord had commanded him.

30 Then Moses put the bowl between the Meeting Tent and the altar. He put water in the bowl for washing. 31 Moses, Aaron, and Aaron’s sons used this bowl to wash their hands and feet. 32 They washed themselves every time they entered the Meeting Tent. They also washed themselves every time they went near the altar. They did these things just as the Lord commanded Moses.

33 Then Moses set up the curtains around the courtyard of the Holy Tent. He put the altar in the courtyard. Then he put the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard. So he finished all the work.

The Glory of the Lord

34 Then the cloud covered the Meeting Tent and the Glory of the Lord filled the Holy Tent. 35 Moses could not go into the Meeting Tent because the cloud had settled on it, and the Glory of the Lord had filled the Holy Tent.

36 When the cloud rose from the Holy Tent, the Israelites would begin to travel. 37 But when the cloud stayed on the Holy Tent, the people did not try to move. They stayed in that place until the cloud rose. 38 So the cloud of the Lord was over the Holy Tent during the day, and at night there was a fire in the cloud. So all the Israelites could see the cloud while they traveled.

40 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

2 On the first day of the first month shalt thou set up the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation.

3 And thou shalt put therein the ark of the testimony, and cover the ark with the vail.

4 And thou shalt bring in the table, and set in order the things that are to be set in order upon it; and thou shalt bring in the candlestick, and light the lamps thereof.

5 And thou shalt set the altar of gold for the incense before the ark of the testimony, and put the hanging of the door to the tabernacle.

6 And thou shalt set the altar of the burnt offering before the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation.

7 And thou shalt set the laver between the tent of the congregation and the altar, and shalt put water therein.

8 And thou shalt set up the court round about, and hang up the hanging at the court gate.

9 And thou shalt take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that is therein, and shalt hallow it, and all the vessels thereof: and it shall be holy.

10 And thou shalt anoint the altar of the burnt offering, and all his vessels, and sanctify the altar: and it shall be an altar most holy.

11 And thou shalt anoint the laver and his foot, and sanctify it.

12 And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and wash them with water.

13 And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him; that he may minister unto me in the priest's office.

14 And thou shalt bring his sons, and clothe them with coats:

15 And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office: for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.

16 Thus did Moses: according to all that the Lord commanded him, so did he.

17 And it came to pass in the first month in the second year, on the first day of the month, that the tabernacle was reared up.

18 And Moses reared up the tabernacle, and fastened his sockets, and set up the boards thereof, and put in the bars thereof, and reared up his pillars.

19 And he spread abroad the tent over the tabernacle, and put the covering of the tent above upon it; as the Lord commanded Moses.

20 And he took and put the testimony into the ark, and set the staves on the ark, and put the mercy seat above upon the ark:

21 And he brought the ark into the tabernacle, and set up the vail of the covering, and covered the ark of the testimony; as the Lord commanded Moses.

22 And he put the table in the tent of the congregation, upon the side of the tabernacle northward, without the vail.

23 And he set the bread in order upon it before the Lord ; as the Lord had commanded Moses.

24 And he put the candlestick in the tent of the congregation, over against the table, on the side of the tabernacle southward.

25 And he lighted the lamps before the Lord ; as the Lord commanded Moses.

26 And he put the golden altar in the tent of the congregation before the vail:

27 And he burnt sweet incense thereon; as the Lord commanded Moses.

28 And he set up the hanging at the door of the tabernacle.

29 And he put the altar of burnt offering by the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation, and offered upon it the burnt offering and the meat offering; as the Lord commanded Moses.

30 And he set the laver between the tent of the congregation and the altar, and put water there, to wash withal.

31 And Moses and Aaron and his sons washed their hands and their feet thereat:

32 When they went into the tent of the congregation, and when they came near unto the altar, they washed; as the Lord commanded Moses.

33 And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the hanging of the court gate. So Moses finished the work.

34 Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

35 And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

36 And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward in all their journeys:

37 But if the cloud were not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up.

38 For the cloud of the Lord was upon the tabernacle by day, and fire was on it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.

The Tabernacle Erected

40 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 ( A ) On the first day of the first month you shall set up the [ a ] tabernacle of the tent of meeting. 3 ( B ) You shall place the ark of the testimony there, and you shall screen off the ark with the veil. 4 Then you shall ( C ) bring in the table and ( D ) arrange [ b ] what belongs on it; and you shall ( E ) bring in the lampstand and [ c ] mount its lamps. 5 You shall also ( F ) set the gold altar of incense in front of the ark of the testimony, and set up the curtain for the doorway to the tabernacle. 6 And you shall set the altar of burnt offering in front of the doorway of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting. 7 Then you shall ( G ) set the basin between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water [ d ] in it. 8 You shall also set up the courtyard all around and [ e ] hang up the curtain for the gate of the courtyard. 9 Then you shall take the anointing oil and ( H ) anoint the tabernacle and everything that is in it, and consecrate it and all its [ f ] furnishings; and it shall be holy. 10 You shall also anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and consecrate the altar, and ( I ) the altar shall be most holy. 11 And you shall anoint the basin and its stand, and consecrate it. 12 Then you shall ( J ) bring Aaron and his sons to the doorway of the tent of meeting and wash them with water. 13 And ( K ) you shall put the holy garments on Aaron and anoint him and consecrate him, so that he may serve as a priest to Me. 14 You shall also bring his sons and put tunics on them; 15 and you shall anoint them just as you have anointed their father, so that they may serve as priests to Me; and their anointing will [ g ] qualify them for a ( L ) permanent priesthood throughout their generations.” 16 So Moses did these things ; according to all that the Lord had commanded him, so he did.

17 Now ( M ) in the first month [ h ] of the second year, on the first day of the month, the [ i ] tabernacle was erected. 18 Moses erected the tabernacle and [ j ] laid its bases, and set up its boards, and [ k ] inserted its bars, and erected its pillars. 19 And he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering of the tent [ l ] on top of it, just as the Lord had commanded Moses. 20 Then he took ( N ) the testimony and put it into the ark, and [ m ] attached the poles to the ark, and put the [ n ] atoning cover [ o ] on top of the ark. 21 He then brought the ark into the tabernacle, and ( O ) set up a veil for the covering, and screened off the ark of the testimony, just as the Lord had commanded Moses. 22 He also ( P ) put the table in the tent of meeting on the north side of the tabernacle, outside the veil. 23 And he set the arrangement of ( Q ) bread in order on it before the Lord , just as the Lord had commanded Moses. 24 Then he placed the lampstand in the tent of meeting, opposite the table, on the south side of the tabernacle. 25 And he ( R ) lighted the lamps before the Lord , just as the Lord had commanded Moses. 26 Then he ( S ) placed the gold altar in the tent of meeting in front of the veil; 27 and he ( T ) burned fragrant incense on it, just as the Lord had commanded Moses. 28 Then he set up the curtain for the doorway of the tabernacle. 29 And he ( U ) set the altar of burnt offering in front of the doorway of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting, and ( V ) offered on it the burnt offering and the meal offering, just as the Lord had commanded Moses. 30 He placed the basin between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water in it for washing. 31 ( W ) From it Moses and Aaron and his sons washed their hands and their feet. 32 When they entered the tent of meeting, and when they approached the altar, they washed, just as the Lord had commanded Moses. 33 And he ( X ) erected the courtyard all around the [ p ] tabernacle and the altar, and [ q ] hung up the curtain for the gate of the courtyard. So Moses finished the work.

The Glory of the Lord

34 ( Y ) Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the ( Z ) glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 35 And Moses ( AA ) was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 36 Throughout their journeys, ( AB ) whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the sons of Israel would set out; 37 but ( AC ) if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out until the day when it was taken up. 38 For throughout their journeys, ( AD ) the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and there was fire in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel.

Setting Up the Tabernacle

40 Then the Lord said to Moses: 2 “Set up ( A ) the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, ( B ) on the first day of the first month. ( C ) 3 Place the ark ( D ) of the covenant law in it and shield the ark with the curtain. 4 Bring in the table ( E ) and set out what belongs on it. ( F ) Then bring in the lampstand ( G ) and set up its lamps. 5 Place the gold altar ( H ) of incense in front of the ark of the covenant law and put the curtain at the entrance to the tabernacle.

6 “Place the altar ( I ) of burnt offering in front of the entrance to the tabernacle, the tent of meeting; 7 place the basin ( J ) between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it. 8 Set up the courtyard ( K ) around it and put the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard.

9 “Take the anointing oil and anoint ( L ) the tabernacle and everything in it; consecrate it and all its furnishings, ( M ) and it will be holy. 10 Then anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils; consecrate ( N ) the altar, and it will be most holy. 11 Anoint the basin and its stand and consecrate them.

12 “Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance to the tent of meeting ( O ) and wash them with water. ( P ) 13 Then dress Aaron in the sacred garments, ( Q ) anoint him and consecrate ( R ) him so he may serve me as priest. 14 Bring his sons and dress them in tunics. ( S ) 15 Anoint them just as you anointed their father, so they may serve me as priests. Their anointing will be to a priesthood that will continue throughout their generations. ( T ) 16 Moses did everything just as the Lord commanded ( U ) him.

17 So the tabernacle ( V ) was set up on the first day of the first month ( W ) in the second year. 18 When Moses ( X ) set up the tabernacle, he put the bases in place, erected the frames, ( Y ) inserted the crossbars and set up the posts. 19 Then he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering ( Z ) over the tent, as the Lord commanded ( AA ) him.

20 He took the tablets of the covenant law ( AB ) and placed them in the ark, ( AC ) attached the poles to the ark and put the atonement cover ( AD ) over it. 21 Then he brought the ark into the tabernacle and hung the shielding curtain ( AE ) and shielded the ark of the covenant law, as the Lord commanded ( AF ) him.

22 Moses placed the table ( AG ) in the tent of meeting on the north side of the tabernacle outside the curtain 23 and set out the bread ( AH ) on it before the Lord , as the Lord commanded ( AI ) him.

24 He placed the lampstand ( AJ ) in the tent of meeting opposite the table on the south side of the tabernacle 25 and set up the lamps ( AK ) before the Lord , as the Lord commanded ( AL ) him.

26 Moses placed the gold altar ( AM ) in the tent of meeting in front of the curtain 27 and burned fragrant incense on it, as the Lord commanded ( AN ) him.

28 Then he put up the curtain ( AO ) at the entrance to the tabernacle. 29 He set the altar ( AP ) of burnt offering near the entrance to the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, and offered on it burnt offerings and grain offerings, ( AQ ) as the Lord commanded ( AR ) him.

30 He placed the basin ( AS ) between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it for washing, 31 and Moses and Aaron and his sons used it to wash ( AT ) their hands and feet. 32 They washed whenever they entered the tent of meeting or approached the altar, ( AU ) as the Lord commanded ( AV ) Moses.

33 Then Moses set up the courtyard ( AW ) around the tabernacle and altar and put up the curtain ( AX ) at the entrance to the courtyard. And so Moses finished the work.

The Glory of the Lord

34 Then the cloud ( AY ) covered the tent of meeting, and the glory ( AZ ) of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 35 Moses could not enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory ( BA ) of the Lord filled the tabernacle. ( BB )

36 In all the travels of the Israelites, whenever the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle, they would set out; ( BC ) 37 but if the cloud did not lift, they did not set out—until the day it lifted. 38 So the cloud ( BD ) of the Lord was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the Israelites during all their travels.
