Exodus 25

The tabernacle

25 The Lord said to Moses: 2 ‘Tell the Israelites to bring me an offering. Every person who wants to give can make a gift to me. You must receive their gifts. 3 These are the gifts that you must receive from the people as an offering:

gold, silver and bronze;

4 blue, purple and red material;

good linen and goat's hair;

5 red leather from sheep's skins and other good leather;

wood from acacia trees;

6 olive oil for the lamps;

spices for the special oil and for incense with a nice smell;

7 onyx and other jewels to fix on the priest's ephod and his breastpiece. [ a ]

8 You must tell the Israelites to make a special place to be my home. Then I will live among them. 9 I will show you how to make this tabernacle and everything that you will put inside it. But you must make everything in the way that I tell you.

The Covenant Box

10 The Israelites must use acacia wood to make a big box. It must be 1 metre long, 75 centimetres wide and 75 centimetres high. 11 Cover the wood with gold, both inside and outside. Build up the edges of the box with gold. 12 Make four gold rings and fix them to the four feet of the box. Fix two rings on one side and two rings on the other side. 13 Then use acacia wood to make two poles. Cover them with gold too. 14 Push the poles through the rings on the sides of the box. You will use the poles to carry the box. 15 The poles must remain along the side of the box, in the rings. Never remove them. 16 Then put into the box the two flat stones with the words of the covenant on them. I will give those to you.

17 Use pure gold to make a lid for the box. Make the lid 1 metre long and 75 centimetres wide. 18 Use gold to make images of two cherubs. Use a hammer to make them the right shape. They will stand at the two ends of the lid. 19 One cherub will stand at one end of the lid, and one cherub will stand at the other end. The two cherubs and the lid must be one piece of gold. 20 The cherubs must look towards each other and watch over the lid. Their wings must touch each other over the top of the lid. 21 Then put the lid on the top of the box. Put the flat stones with the words of the covenant into the box. I will give those to you.

22 I will meet with you there, between the two cherubs that are above the lid. They watch over the Covenant Box. In that place I will give you all my commands for the Israelites.

The table for special bread

23 Use acacia wood to make a table. It must be one 1 metre long, 50 centimetres wide and 75 centimetres high. 24 Cover the wood with gold. Build up the edges of the table with gold. 25 Also, fix an extra piece of wood around its edge. It must be 7 centimetres wide. Build up the edges of this piece with gold.

26 Make four gold rings for the table. Fix them to the four corners, one beside each leg of the table. 27 The rings must be near to the extra piece of wood. They will hold the poles that you will use to carry the table. 28 Use acacia wood to make the poles. Cover them with gold. Use the poles to carry the table. 29 Use pure gold to make plates, big spoons, jars and bowls. You will use these things to pour out drink offerings. 30 Put the Lord 's special bread on this table. The bread must always be there for me.

The lampstand

31 Use one piece of pure gold to make a lampstand. Use a hammer to make it the right shape. Use the gold to make its base, its middle pole and the cups to hold the oil. The cups will be like open flowers and closed flowers. 32 Make six branches on the lampstand, three branches on each side of the middle pole. 33 Put three cups in the shape of almond flowers and their leaves on each branch. Each of the six branches of the lampstand will have three cups like that. 34 On the lampstand itself, put four cups in the shape of almond flowers and their leaves. 35 Put one closed flower under the first pair of branches. Put a second closed flower under the second pair of branches. Put the third closed flower under the third pair of branches. So there will be three closed flowers for the six branches on the lampstand. 36 You must make the flowers and the branches from the same piece of pure gold as the lampstand. Use a hammer to make the gold into the right shape.

37 Then make seven lamps and fix them to the lampstand. Fix them so that they light the space in front of the lampstand. 38 Also use pure gold to make small tools and dishes to take care of the lamps. 39 Use 34 kilograms of pure gold to make the lampstand and all the tools to take care of it.

40 Be careful to make all these things like the plan that I have shown you on the mountain.

Footnotes

  1. 25:7 The ephod and the breastpiece were special clothes that the priests wore.

Gifts for the Holy Things

25 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Tell the Israelites to bring me gifts. You will accept gifts for me from everyone who is willing to give. 3 Here is the list of the things that you should accept from the people: gold, silver, and bronze; 4 blue, purple, and red yarn and fine linen; goat hair, 5 ram skins dyed red, and fine leather; acacia wood; 6 oil for the lamps; spices for the anointing oil and spices for the sweet-smelling incense. 7 Also accept onyx stones and other jewels to be put on the ephod and the judgment pouch.

The Holy Tent

8 “The people will build a holy place for me. Then I can live among them. 9 I will show you what the Holy Tent and everything in it should look like. Build everything exactly as I show you.

The Box of the Agreement

10 “Use acacia wood and build a special box. This Holy Box must be 2 1/2 cubits [ a ] long, 1 1/2 cubits [ b ] wide, and 1 1/2 cubits high. 11 Use pure gold to cover the Box inside and out. Put gold trim around the edges of the Box. 12 Make four gold rings for carrying the Box. Put the gold rings on the four corners, two rings on each side. 13 Then make poles for carrying the Box. These poles should be made from acacia wood and covered with gold. 14 Put the poles through the rings on the corners of the Box. Use these poles to carry the Box. 15 These poles should always stay in the rings of the Box. Don’t take the poles out.

16 “I will give you the Agreement. Put it into this Box. 17 Then make a lid, the mercy-cover. Make it from pure gold. Make it 2 1/2 cubits long and 1 1/2 cubits wide. 18 Then make two Cherub angels and put them on each end of the mercy-cover. Hammer gold to make these angels. 19 Put one angel on one end of the mercy-cover, and put the other angel on the other end. Join the angels together with the mercy-cover to make one piece. 20 The wings of these angels should spread up toward the sky. The angels should cover the Box with their wings and should face each other, looking toward the mercy-cover.

21 “I will give you the Agreement. Put it in the Box, and put the mercy-cover on the Box. 22 When I meet with you, I will speak from between the Cherub angels on the mercy-cover that is on the Box of the Agreement. From that place, I will give all my commands to the Israelites.

The Table

23 “Make a table from acacia wood. The table must be 2 cubits [ c ] long, 1 cubit [ d ] wide, and 1 1/2 cubits high. 24 Cover the table with pure gold and put gold trim around it. 25 Then make a frame 1 handbreadth [ e ] wide around the table. And put gold trim on the frame. 26 Then make four gold rings and put them on the four corners of the table, where the four legs are. 27 Put the rings close to the frame around the top of the table. These rings will hold the poles used to carry the table. 28 Use acacia wood to make the poles, and cover them with gold. The poles are for carrying the table. 29 Make the plates, the spoons, the pitchers, and the bowls from pure gold. The pitchers and bowls will be used for pouring the drink offerings. 30 Put the special bread [ f ] before me on the table. It must always be there in front of me.

The Lampstand

31 “Then you must make a lampstand. Use pure gold and hammer it to make the base and the shaft. [ g ] Make flowers, buds, and petals from pure gold. Join all these things together into one piece.

32 “The lampstand must have six branches—three branches on one side and three branches on the other. 33 Each branch must have three flowers. Make these flowers like almond flowers with buds and petals. 34 Make four more flowers for the lampstand. These flowers must be made like almond flowers with buds and petals. 35 There will be six branches on the lampstand—three branches coming out from each side of the shaft. Make a flower with buds and petals below each of the three places where the branches join the shaft. 36 The whole lampstand with the flowers and branches must be made from pure gold. All this gold must be hammered and joined together into one piece. 37 Then make seven lamps [ h ] to go on the lampstand. These lamps will give light to the area in front of the lampstand. 38 Use pure gold to make the lamp snuffers and trays. 39 Use 75 pounds [ i ] of pure gold to make the lampstand and the things to be used with it. 40 Be very careful to make everything exactly the way I showed you on the mountain.

Offerings for the Tabernacle ( A )

25 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Tell the Israelites to bring me an offering. You are to receive the offering for me from everyone whose heart prompts ( B ) them to give. 3 These are the offerings you are to receive from them: gold, silver and bronze; 4 blue, purple and scarlet yarn ( C ) and fine linen; goat hair; 5 ram skins dyed red and another type of durable leather [ a ] ; ( D ) acacia wood; ( E ) 6 olive oil ( F ) for the light; spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense; ( G ) 7 and onyx stones and other gems to be mounted on the ephod ( H ) and breastpiece. ( I )

8 “Then have them make a sanctuary ( J ) for me, and I will dwell ( K ) among them. 9 Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern ( L ) I will show you.

The Ark ( M )

10 “Have them make an ark [ b ] ( N ) of acacia wood—two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half high. [ c ] 11 Overlay ( O ) it with pure gold, both inside and out, and make a gold molding around it. 12 Cast four gold rings for it and fasten them to its four feet, with two rings ( P ) on one side and two rings on the other. 13 Then make poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. ( Q ) 14 Insert the poles ( R ) into the rings on the sides of the ark to carry it. 15 The poles are to remain in the rings of this ark; they are not to be removed. ( S ) 16 Then put in the ark the tablets of the covenant law, ( T ) which I will give you.

17 “Make an atonement cover ( U ) of pure gold—two and a half cubits long and a cubit and a half wide. 18 And make two cherubim ( V ) out of hammered gold at the ends of the cover. 19 Make one cherub on one end and the second cherub on the other; make the cherubim of one piece with the cover, at the two ends. 20 The cherubim ( W ) are to have their wings spread upward, overshadowing ( X ) the cover with them. The cherubim are to face each other, looking toward the cover. 21 Place the cover on top of the ark ( Y ) and put in the ark the tablets of the covenant law ( Z ) that I will give you. 22 There, above the cover between the two cherubim ( AA ) that are over the ark of the covenant law, I will meet ( AB ) with you and give you all my commands for the Israelites. ( AC )

The Table ( AD )

23 “Make a table ( AE ) of acacia wood—two cubits long, a cubit wide and a cubit and a half high. [ d ] 24 Overlay it with pure gold and make a gold molding around it. 25 Also make around it a rim a handbreadth [ e ] wide and put a gold molding on the rim. 26 Make four gold rings for the table and fasten them to the four corners, where the four legs are. 27 The rings are to be close to the rim to hold the poles used in carrying the table. 28 Make the poles of acacia wood, overlay them with gold ( AF ) and carry the table with them. 29 And make its plates and dishes of pure gold, as well as its pitchers and bowls for the pouring out of offerings. ( AG ) 30 Put the bread of the Presence ( AH ) on this table to be before me at all times.

The Lampstand ( AI )

31 “Make a lampstand ( AJ ) of pure gold. Hammer out its base and shaft, and make its flowerlike cups, buds and blossoms of one piece with them. 32 Six branches are to extend from the sides of the lampstand—three on one side and three on the other. 33 Three cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms are to be on one branch, three on the next branch, and the same for all six branches extending from the lampstand. 34 And on the lampstand there are to be four cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms. 35 One bud shall be under the first pair of branches extending from the lampstand, a second bud under the second pair, and a third bud under the third pair—six branches in all. 36 The buds and branches shall all be of one piece with the lampstand, hammered out of pure gold. ( AK )

37 “Then make its seven lamps ( AL ) and set them up on it so that they light the space in front of it. 38 Its wick trimmers and trays ( AM ) are to be of pure gold. 39 A talent [ f ] of pure gold is to be used for the lampstand and all these accessories. 40 See that you make them according to the pattern ( AN ) shown you on the mountain.
