15 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to praise the Lord :
‘I will sing to the Lord , because he has shown his great power.
He threw horses and their riders into the sea.
2 The Lord makes me strong. He is the reason for my song.
He is the one who has saved me.
He is my God and I will praise him.
He is my father's God and I will praise his name.
3 The Lord is like a brave soldier.
The Lord is his name.
4 He threw Pharaoh's chariots and his army into the sea.
Pharaoh's best officers drowned in the Red Sea.
5 The deep waters have covered them.
They fell to the floor of the sea, like a stone.
6 Your right hand, Lord , was great and powerful.
Your right hand, Lord , destroyed the enemy.
7 With your powerful authority, you killed your enemies.
You were very angry with them.
You killed them, like a fire burns dry grass.
8 You blew on the water and it became like a wall.
The deep waters stood up in a big heap.
9 The enemy said, “We will go after them. We will catch them.
We will destroy them with our swords.
We will do whatever we want to them.
We will take all their valuable things for ourselves.”
10 But Lord , you blew on the waters
so that the sea covered your enemies.
They went down like heavy metal in the great waters.
11 Lord , there is nobody like you among all the gods!
There is nobody like you anywhere!
You are great and holy.
Everyone should respect you and praise you.
You do great miracles.
There is nobody like you!
12 You lifted up your right hand.
A big hole opened in the ground and our enemies fell into it.
13 You have promised to love your people.
So you have saved them and you lead them.
With your strength, you show them the way to your holy home.
14 The people of other nations will hear what you have done.
They will be very afraid.
The people who live in Philistia will shake with fear.
15 The rulers of Edom will be afraid.
The leaders of Moab will shake with fear.
The people who live in Canaan will become weak.
16 They will all be afraid.
Because of your great power they will want to run away.
But they cannot move!
They will remain still, like stones, until your people go on past them.
They will stand and watch as the people you have saved, Lord , pass by.
17 You will bring your people in safely.
You will bring them to live on your own mountain.
Lord , that is the place that you have prepared for your home.
It is the holy place that you have built, Lord.
18 The Lord will rule as king for ever!
19 Pharaoh's horses, his chariots and his soldiers went into the sea.
Then the Lord made the waters of the sea come back over them.
But the Israelites walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground.’
20 Then Miriam, Aaron's sister, who was a prophet, took a tambourine in her hand. [ a ] All the other women followed her, with tambourines in their hands. They danced while Miriam sang to them.
21 This is the song that she sang:
‘Sing to the Lord , because he has shown his great power.
He threw horses and their riders into the sea.’
22 Then Moses led the Israelites away from the Red Sea. They travelled into the desert called Shur. They walked into the desert for three days and they could not find any water to drink. 23 Then they arrived at Marah. But they could not drink the water there because it was too bitter. That is why they called that place ‘Marah’. [ b ]
24 Then the people complained. They spoke against Moses. They said, ‘There is nothing for us to drink!’
25 Then Moses called to the Lord for help. The Lord showed Moses a special tree. Moses threw a branch into the water. Then the water became good for them to drink.
There at Marah, the Lord made a law for the Israelites to obey. He tested them there, to see if they would trust him. 26 He said, ‘Be careful to listen to what the Lord your God says to you. Let him see that you are doing things that are right. Obey his commands and his rules. Then I will not give to you the diseases that I gave to the Egyptians. I am the Lord . I am the one who gives you health.’
27 Then the Israelites arrived at Elim. There they found 12 wells of water and 70 palm trees. The Israelites put up their tents there, where there was water.
15 Then Moses and the Israelites began singing this song to the Lord :
“I will sing to the Lord !
He has done great things.
He threw horse and rider
into the sea.
2 The Lord is my strength.
He saves me,
and I sing songs of praise to him. [ a ]
He is my God,
and I praise him.
He is the God of my ancestors,
and I honor him.
3 The Lord is a great soldier.
The Lord is his name.
4 He threw Pharaoh’s chariots
and soldiers into the sea.
Pharaoh’s very best soldiers
drowned in the Red Sea. [ b ]
5 The deep water covered them,
and they sank to the bottom like rocks.
6 “ Lord , your right hand is amazingly strong.
With your right hand, Lord , you broke the enemy to pieces.
7 In your great majesty you destroyed
those who stood against you.
Your anger destroyed them,
like fire burning straw.
8 The wind you sent in anger
piled the water high.
The flowing water became a wall,
solid to its deepest parts.
9 “The enemy said,
‘I’ll chase them and catch them.
I’ll take all their riches.
I’ll take it all with my sword.
I’ll take everything for myself.’
10 But you blew on them
and covered them with the sea.
They sank like lead
into the deep sea.
11 “Are there any gods like the Lord ?
No, there are no gods like you—
you are wonderfully holy!
You are amazingly powerful!
You do great miracles!
12 You raised your right hand to punish the enemy,
and the ground opened up to swallow them.
13 But with your kindness
you led the people you saved.
And with your strength
you led them to your holy land. [ c ]
14 “The other nations will hear this story,
and they will be frightened.
The Philistines will shake with fear.
15 The commanders of Edom will tremble.
The leaders of Moab will be afraid.
The people of Canaan will lose courage.
16 They will be filled with fear
when they see your strength.
They will be as still as a rock, Lord ,
while your people, the ones you made, pass by.
17 You will lead your people
to your own mountain.
You will let them live by the place that you, Lord , prepared as your home.
It is the Temple, Lord, that you yourself built.
18 “The Lord will rule forever and ever!”
19 Yes, it really happened! Pharaoh’s horses and riders, and chariots went into the sea. And the Lord brought all the water of the sea down on top of them. But the Israelites walked through that sea on dry land.
20 Then Aaron’s sister, the woman prophet Miriam, took a tambourine. She and the women began singing and dancing. 21 Miriam repeated the words,
“Sing to the Lord !
He has done great things.
He threw horse and rider
into the sea ….”
22 Moses led the Israelites away from the Red Sea and into the desert of Shur. They traveled for three days in the desert. They could not find any water. 23 Then they came to Marah. [ d ] There was water at Marah, but it was too bitter to drink. (That is why the place was named Marah.)
24 The people began complaining to Moses. They said, “Now what will we drink?”
25 So Moses called to the Lord , and the Lord showed him a large piece of wood. When Moses put the wood in the water, the water became good to drink.
There the Lord put in place a law and a command for him and tested him to see if he would obey. [ e ] 26 He said to him, “I am the Lord your God. If you listen to me and do what I say is right, and if you obey all my commands and laws, then I will not give you any of the sicknesses that I gave the Egyptians. I am the Lord who heals you.”
27 Then the people traveled to Elim. At Elim there were twelve springs of water and 70 palm trees. So the people made their camp there near that water.
15 Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the Lord , and spake, saying, I will sing unto the Lord , for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.
2 The Lord is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him.
3 The Lord is a man of war: the Lord is his name.
4 Pharaoh's chariots and his host hath he cast into the sea: his chosen captains also are drowned in the Red sea.
5 The depths have covered them: they sank into the bottom as a stone.
6 Thy right hand, O Lord , is become glorious in power: thy right hand, O Lord , hath dashed in pieces the enemy.
7 And in the greatness of thine excellency thou hast overthrown them that rose up against thee: thou sentest forth thy wrath, which consumed them as stubble.
8 And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea.
9 The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my lust shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them.
10 Thou didst blow with thy wind, the sea covered them: they sank as lead in the mighty waters.
11 Who is like unto thee, O Lord , among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?
12 Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them.
13 Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed: thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation.
14 The people shall hear, and be afraid: sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina.
15 Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.
16 Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; till thy people pass over, O Lord , till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased.
17 Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, in the place, O Lord , which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, O Lord , which thy hands have established.
18 The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.
19 For the horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and the Lord brought again the waters of the sea upon them; but the children of Israel went on dry land in the midst of the sea.
20 And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.
21 And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the Lord , for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.
22 So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water.
23 And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah.
24 And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink?
25 And he cried unto the Lord ; and the Lord shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them,
26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee.
27 And they came to Elim, where were twelve wells of water, and threescore and ten palm trees: and they encamped there by the waters.
15 ( A ) Then Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song to the Lord , [ a ] saying:

4 ( J ) Pharaoh’s chariots and his army He has thrown into the sea;
And the choicest of his officers are [ e ] drowned in the [ f ] Red Sea.
5 The waters cover them;
( K ) They went down into the depths like a stone.
6 ( L ) Your right hand, Lord , is majestic in power;
( M ) Your right hand, Lord , destroys the enemy.
7 And in the greatness of Your [ g ] excellence You ( N ) overthrow those who rise up against You;
( O ) You send out Your burning anger, and it ( P ) consumes them like chaff.
8 ( Q ) At the blast of Your nostrils the waters were piled up,
( R ) The flowing waters stood up like a heap;

The earth swallowed them.
13 In Your [ k ] faithfulness You have ( AB ) led the people whom You have ( AC ) redeemed;
In Your strength You have guided them ( AD ) to Your holy habitation.
14 ( AE ) The peoples have heard, they tremble;
Anguish has gripped the inhabitants of Philistia.
15 Then the ( AF ) chiefs of Edom were terrified;
( AG ) The leaders of Moab, trembling grips them;
( AH ) All the inhabitants of Canaan have despaired.
16 ( AI ) Terror and dread fall upon them;
( AJ ) By the greatness of Your arm they are motionless as stone,
Until Your people pass over, Lord ,
Until the people pass over whom You ( AK ) have purchased.
17 ( AL ) You will bring them and ( AM ) plant them in ( AN ) the mountain of Your inheritance,
( AO ) The place, Lord , which You have made as Your dwelling,
( AP ) The sanctuary, Lord, which Your hands have established.
18 ( AQ ) The Lord shall reign forever and ever.”
19 ( AR ) For the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, and the Lord brought back the waters of the sea on them, but the sons of Israel walked on ( AS ) dry land through the midst of the sea.
20 ( AT ) Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took the ( AU ) tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with [ l ] ( AV ) dancing. 21 And Miriam answered them,
“ ( AW ) Sing to the Lord , for He [ m ] is highly exalted;
The horse and his rider He has hurled into the sea.”

There He ( BE ) made for them a statute and regulation, and there He ( BF ) tested them. 26 And He said, “ ( BG ) If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in His sight, and listen ( BH ) to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, ( BI ) I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, ( BJ ) the Lord , am your healer.”
27 Then they came to ( BK ) Elim where there were twelve springs of water and seventy date palms, and they camped there beside the waters.
15 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song ( A ) to the Lord :
“I will sing ( B ) to the Lord ,
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver ( C )
he has hurled into the sea. ( D )
2 “The Lord is my strength ( E ) and my defense [ a ] ;
he has become my salvation. ( F )
He is my God, ( G ) and I will praise him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt ( H ) him.

The best of Pharaoh’s officers
are drowned in the Red Sea. [ b ]

In your strength you will guide them

the leaders of Moab will be seized with trembling, ( AP )

16 terror ( AR ) and dread will fall on them.
By the power of your arm
they will be as still as a stone ( AS ) —
until your people pass by, Lord ,
until the people you bought [ d ] ( AT ) pass by. ( AU )
17 You will bring ( AV ) them in and plant ( AW ) them
on the mountain ( AX ) of your inheritance—
the place, Lord , you made for your dwelling, ( AY )
the sanctuary, ( AZ ) Lord, your hands established.
18 “The Lord reigns

19 When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen [ e ] went into the sea, ( BB ) the Lord brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. ( BC ) 20 Then Miriam ( BD ) the prophet, ( BE ) Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels ( BF ) and dancing. ( BG ) 21 Miriam sang ( BH ) to them:

There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test. ( BS ) 26 He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep ( BT ) all his decrees, ( BU ) I will not bring on you any of the diseases ( BV ) I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord , who heals ( BW ) you.”
27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped ( BX ) there near the water.
