Deuteronomy 3

Og, king of Bashan

3 Then we turned and we went along the road towards Bashan. Og, king of Bashan, marched out with his whole army to attack us at Edrei. 2 But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not be afraid of him. I have given him to you with his whole army and his land. You must do the same thing to Og as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon.’

3 So the Lord our God put Og, king of Bashan, under our power, as well as his whole army. We killed them all so that we left no one alive. 4 Then we took all of his cities. We took power over all the cities in the region of Argob where King Og of Bashan ruled. There were 60 cities. 5 All the cities had high walls around them, with gates that the people locked. There were also very many villages which did not have walls around them. 6 We destroyed them completely as a gift to the Lord . We had done the same thing to the cities of Sihon, king of Heshbon. We destroyed every city and we killed all the men, women and children. 7 But we kept all the animals and the valuable things from the cities for ourselves.

8 So, at that time, we took power over all the land that the two Amorite kings, Og and Bashan, had ruled. Their land was east of the Jordan River, from the Arnon valley to Mount Hermon. 9 (The people from Sidon call Mount Hermon ‘Sirion’. The Amorites call it ‘Senir’.) 10 We took all their cities in the high, flat land and cities in the whole of Gilead and in Bashan. We went as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities that belonged to the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 11 Og, king of Bashan, was the only descendant of the Rephaites who had still been alive. He had an iron bed that is still in the Ammonites' town, Rabbah. It was 4 metres long and 2 metres wide.

Moses gives land to three tribes

12 When we had taken power over all that land, I gave some of it to the tribes of Reuben and Gad. I gave them the land north of Aroer near the Arnon valley. I also gave them half of the hill country of Gilead and the cities there. 13 I gave the other part of Gilead to one half of the tribe of Manasseh. I also gave Og's kingdom, Bashan, to them. [ a ] People called all the region of Argob in Bashan the land of the Rephaites.

14 Jair belonged to the tribe of Manasseh. He took power over all the region of Argob. He went as far as the borders of Geshur and Maakah. Then he gave his own name to that land. To this day, Bashan has the name ‘Jair's towns’. 15 I gave Gilead to Makir, who also belonged to the tribe of Manasseh.

16 As for the tribes of Reuben and Gad, I gave them land from Gilead to the Arnon valley. The middle of the valley was the border of their land. Their land went as far as the Jabbok valley, which is the border of the Ammonites' land. 17 The valley of the Jordan River was also a border of their land. It went from Lake Galilee as far as the Salt Sea, with Mount Pisgah to the east. [ b ]

18 At that time I commanded you, ‘The Lord your God has given this land to you, for you to live in it. But all your soldiers must take their weapons and they must cross the Jordan River. You must go in front of the other Israelite tribes across the river. 19 But your wives, your children and your animals may stay here in the towns that I have given to you. I know that you have many animals. 20 Your men must fight to help the other Israelites until the Lord gives them a safe place to live. He has already given you a safe place to live. Now you must help the other Israelites to take the land which the Lord your God is giving to them. That land is on the other side of the Jordan River. When they take the land for themselves, you may return here to the land that I have given to you.’

Moses will not cross the Jordan River

21 At that time, I commanded Joshua, ‘You have seen everything that the Lord your God has done to those two kings, Sihon and Og. He will do the same thing to the kingdoms where you are going. 22 So do not be afraid of them. The Lord your God himself will fight to help you.’

23 At that time, I asked the Lord many times, 24 ‘Almighty Lord , I am your servant. You are showing me how great and how strong you are. There is no other god in heaven or on earth that can do the great things that you do. 25 Please let me go across the Jordan River! I want to see the good land over there. I want to see the beautiful hills and the mountains in Lebanon.’

26 But the Lord was angry with me, because of you. He would not answer my prayer. He said, ‘You have said enough! Do not speak to me about that any more. 27 Go up to the top of Mount Pisgah. Stand there and look all around, to the west, north, south and east. Look carefully at the land, because you will not go across the Jordan River. 28 Now you must tell Joshua what to do. Tell him to be brave and strong. He will lead my people across the river into the land that you see. He will help them to take the land for themselves.’

29 After that, we stayed in the valley near Beth-Peor.

Footnotes

  1. 3:13 The land that Moses gave to these tribes was not in Canaan. It was on the east side of the Jordan River. Half the tribe of Manasseh went to live in Canaan, and half the tribe lived on land east of the Jordan River.
  2. 3:17 The Salt Sea is called the Dead Sea today.

Fighting the People of Bashan

3 “We turned and went on the road to Bashan. King Og of Bashan and all his men came out to fight against us at Edrei. 2 The Lord said to me, ‘Don’t be afraid of Og. I have decided to give him to you. I will give you all his men and his land. You will defeat him just as you defeated Sihon, the Amorite king who ruled in Heshbon.’

3 “So the Lord our God let us defeat King Og of Bashan. We destroyed him and all his men. Not one of them was left. 4 Then we took all the cities that belonged to Og at that time. We took all the cities from Og’s people—60 cities in the area of Argob, Og’s kingdom in Bashan. 5 All these cities were very strong. They had high walls, gates, and strong bars on the gates. There were also many towns that did not have walls. 6 We destroyed them just as we destroyed the cities of King Sihon of Heshbon. We completely destroyed every city and all the people in them, even the women and the babies. 7 But we kept all the cattle and the valuable things from the cities for ourselves.

8 “In that way we took the land from the two Amorite kings. We took that land on the east side of the Jordan River, from Arnon Valley to Mount Hermon. 9 (The people from Sidon call Mount Hermon, Sirion, but the Amorites called it Senir.) 10 We took all the cities in the high plain and all of Gilead. We took all of Bashan, all the way to Salecah and Edrei. Salecah and Edrei were cities of Og’s kingdom of Bashan.”

11 (Og was the king of Bashan. He was one of the few Rephaites still alive. His bed was made from iron, and it was over 13 feet long and 6 feet wide. [ a ] The bed is still in the city of Rabbah, where the Ammonites live.)

The Land East of the Jordan River

12 “So we took that land to be ours. I gave part of this land to the tribes of Reuben and Gad. I gave them the land from Aroer in the Arnon Valley to the hill country of Gilead with the cities in it. They got half of the hill country of Gilead. 13 I gave the other half of Gilead and the whole area of Bashan to half the tribe of Manasseh.”

(Bashan was Og’s kingdom. Part of Bashan was called Argob. It was also called the Land of Rephaim. 14 Jair, from the tribe of Manasseh, took the whole area of Argob. That area went all the way to the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites. It was named for Jair, and even today, people call Bashan the Towns of Jair.)

15 “I gave Gilead to Makir. 16 And to the tribe of Reuben and the tribe of Gad, I gave the land that begins at Gilead and goes from the Arnon Valley to the Jabbok River. The middle of the valley is one border. The Jabbok River is the border for the Ammonites. 17 The Jordan River near the desert is their western border. Lake Galilee [ b ] is north of this area and the Dead Sea [ c ] is to the south. It is at the bottom of the cliffs of Pisgah, which are to the east.

18 “At that time I gave those tribes this command: ‘The Lord your God has given you the land on this side of the Jordan River to live in. But now your fighting men must take their weapons and lead the other Israelite tribes across the river. 19 Your wives, your little children, and your cattle (I know you have many cattle) will stay here in the cities I have given you. 20 But you must help your Israelite relatives until they take the land that the Lord is giving them on the other side of the Jordan River. Help them until the Lord gives them peace there, just as he did for you here. Then you may come back to this land that I have given you.’

21 “Then I told Joshua, ‘You have seen all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings. The Lord will do the same thing to all the kingdoms you will enter. 22 Don’t fear the kings of these lands, because the Lord your God will fight for you.’

Moses Not Allowed in Canaan

23 “Then I begged the Lord to do something special for me. I said, 24 ‘Lord God , I am your servant. I know that you have shown me only a small part of the wonderful and powerful things you will do. There is no god in heaven or earth that can do the great and powerful things you have done. 25 Please let me go across the Jordan River and see the good land on the other side. Let me see the beautiful hill country and Lebanon.’

26 “But the Lord was angry with me because of you and refused to listen to me. The Lord said to me, ‘That’s enough! Don’t say another word about this. 27 Go up to the top of Mount Pisgah. Look to the west, to the north, to the south, and to the east. You may see these things with your eyes, but you can never go across the Jordan River. 28 You must give instructions to Joshua. Encourage him. Make him strong, because Joshua must lead the people across the Jordan River. You can see the land, but Joshua will lead them into that land. He will help them take the land and live in it.’

29 “So we stayed in the valley across from Beth Peor.

Footnotes

  1. Deuteronomy 3:11 13 feet long and 6 feet wide Literally, “9 cubits long and 4 cubits wide, following the measure of a man’s cubit.”
  2. Deuteronomy 3:17 Lake Galilee Literally, “Kinnereth Lake.”
  3. Deuteronomy 3:17 Dead Sea Literally, “Arabah Sea.” Also called the “Salt Sea.”

3 Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

2 And the Lord said unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

3 So the Lord our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining.

4 And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

5 All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many.

6 And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city.

7 But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves.

8 And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites the land that was on this side Jordan, from the river of Arnon unto mount Hermon;

9 (Which Hermon the Sidonians call Sirion; and the Amorites call it Shenir;)

10 All the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, unto Salchah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

11 For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.

12 And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, and half mount Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites.

13 And the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, being the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob, with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants.

14 Jair the son of Manasseh took all the country of Argob unto the coasts of Geshuri and Maachathi; and called them after his own name, Bashanhavothjair, unto this day.

15 And I gave Gilead unto Machir.

16 And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from Gilead even unto the river Arnon half the valley, and the border even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon;

17 The plain also, and Jordan, and the coast thereof, from Chinnereth even unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, under Ashdothpisgah eastward.

18 And I commanded you at that time, saying, The Lord your God hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel, all that are meet for the war.

19 But your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle, (for I know that ye have much cattle,) shall abide in your cities which I have given you;

20 Until the Lord have given rest unto your brethren, as well as unto you, and until they also possess the land which the Lord your God hath given them beyond Jordan: and then shall ye return every man unto his possession, which I have given you.

21 And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, Thine eyes have seen all that the Lord your God hath done unto these two kings: so shall the Lord do unto all the kingdoms whither thou passest.

22 Ye shall not fear them: for the Lord your God he shall fight for you.

23 And I besought the Lord at that time, saying,

24 O Lord God , thou hast begun to shew thy servant thy greatness, and thy mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven or in earth, that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might?

25 I pray thee, let me go over, and see the good land that is beyond Jordan, that goodly mountain, and Lebanon.

26 But the Lord was wroth with me for your sakes, and would not hear me: and the Lord said unto me, Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto me of this matter.

27 Get thee up into the top of Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and behold it with thine eyes: for thou shalt not go over this Jordan.

28 But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see.

29 So we abode in the valley over against Bethpeor.

Conquests Recounted

3 ( A ) Then we turned and went up the road to Bashan, and Og, king of Bashan, came out [ a ] with all his people to meet us in battle at Edrei. 2 But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have handed him and all his people and his land over to you; and you shall do to him just as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.’ 3 So the Lord our God also handed over to us Og, king of Bashan, with all his people, and we struck [ b ] them until no survivor was [ c ] left. 4 We captured all his cities at that time; there was not a city which we did not take from them: sixty cities, all the region of ( B ) Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5 All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a great many [ d ] unwalled towns. 6 We [ e ] utterly destroyed them, as we did to ( C ) Sihon king of Heshbon, [ f ] ( D ) utterly destroying [ g ] the men, women, and children of every city. 7 ( E ) But all the animals and the spoils of the cities we took as our plunder.

8 ( F ) So at that time we took the land from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the [ h ] Valley of Arnon to Mount Hermon 9 (Sidonians ( G ) call Hermon ( H ) Sirion, and the Amorites call it ( I ) Senir): 10 all the cities of the plateau, all Gilead, and ( J ) all Bashan, as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 11 (For only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the ( K ) Rephaim. Behold, his [ i ] bed was a [ j ] bed of iron; it is in ( L ) Rabbah of the sons of Ammon. Its length was nine cubits, and its width four cubits by [ k ] the usual cubit.)

12 “So we took possession of this land at that time. From ( M ) Aroer, which is by the [ l ] Valley of Arnon, and half the hill country of ( N ) Gilead and its cities I gave to the Reubenites and to the Gadites. 13 The rest of Gilead and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh, all the region of Argob. (As to all Bashan, it is called the land of Rephaim. 14 ( O ) Jair the son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, that is , Bashan, and named [ m ] it after his own name: [ n ] Havvoth-jair, as it is to this day.) 15 ( P ) To Machir I gave Gilead. 16 To the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave from Gilead even as far as the [ o ] Valley of Arnon, the middle of the [ p ] valley [ q ] as a border, and as far as the [ r ] river ( Q ) Jabbok, the border of the sons of Ammon; 17 the Arabah also, with the Jordan [ s ] as a border, from [ t ] ( R ) Chinnereth ( S ) even as far as the sea of the Arabah, ( T ) the Salt Sea, [ u ] at the foot of the slopes of Pisgah on the east.

18 “Then I commanded you at that time, saying, ‘ ( U ) The Lord your God has given you this land to possess it; ( V ) all you [ v ] valiant men shall cross over armed ahead of your brothers, the sons of Israel. 19 ( W ) However, your wives, your little ones, and your livestock (I know that you have ( X ) much livestock) shall remain in your cities which I have given you, 20 ( Y ) until the Lord gives rest to your fellow countrymen as to you, and they also take possession of the land which the Lord your God is giving them beyond the Jordan. ( Z ) Then you may return, each man to his possession which I have given you.’ 21 And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, ‘Your eyes have seen everything that the Lord your God has done to these two kings; the Lord will do the same to all the kingdoms into which you are about to cross. 22 Do not fear them, for the Lord your God ( AA ) is the One fighting for you.’

23 “I also pleaded with the Lord at that time, saying, 24 ‘Lord [ w ] God , You have begun to show Your servant ( AB ) Your greatness and Your strong hand; for what ( AC ) god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as Yours? 25 Please let me cross over and see the ( AD ) good land that is beyond the Jordan, [ x ] that good hill country, and Lebanon.’ 26 But ( AE ) the Lord was angry with me on your account, and would not listen to me; instead, the Lord said to me, ‘ [ y ] Enough! Do not speak to Me any more about this matter. 27 Go up to the top of ( AF ) Pisgah and raise your eyes to the west, the north, the south, and the east, and see it with your eyes; ( AG ) for you shall not cross over this Jordan. 28 ( AH ) But commission Joshua and encourage him and strengthen him, ( AI ) for he shall go across [ z ] leading this people, and he will give to them, as an inheritance, the land which you will see.’ 29 So we remained in the valley opposite ( AJ ) Beth-peor.

Defeat of Og King of Bashan

3 Next we turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan ( A ) with his whole army marched out to meet us in battle at Edrei. ( B ) 2 The Lord said to me, “Do not be afraid ( C ) of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon.”

3 So the Lord our God also gave into our hands Og king of Bashan and all his army. We struck them down, ( D ) leaving no survivors. ( E ) 4 At that time we took all his cities. ( F ) There was not one of the sixty cities that we did not take from them—the whole region of Argob, Og’s kingdom ( G ) in Bashan. ( H ) 5 All these cities were fortified with high walls and with gates and bars, and there were also a great many unwalled villages. 6 We completely destroyed [ a ] them, as we had done with Sihon king of Heshbon, destroying [ b ] ( I ) every city—men, women and children. 7 But all the livestock ( J ) and the plunder from their cities we carried off for ourselves.

8 So at that time we took from these two kings of the Amorites ( K ) the territory east of the Jordan, from the Arnon Gorge as far as Mount Hermon. ( L ) 9 (Hermon is called Sirion ( M ) by the Sidonians; the Amorites call it Senir.) ( N ) 10 We took all the towns on the plateau, and all Gilead, and all Bashan as far as Salekah ( O ) and Edrei, towns of Og’s kingdom in Bashan. 11 (Og king of Bashan was the last of the Rephaites. ( P ) His bed was decorated with iron and was more than nine cubits long and four cubits wide. [ c ] It is still in Rabbah ( Q ) of the Ammonites.)

Division of the Land

12 Of the land that we took over at that time, I gave the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory north of Aroer ( R ) by the Arnon Gorge, including half the hill country of Gilead, together with its towns. 13 The rest of Gilead and also all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh. ( S ) (The whole region of Argob in Bashan used to be known as a land of the Rephaites. ( T ) 14 Jair, ( U ) a descendant of Manasseh, took the whole region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maakathites; ( V ) it was named ( W ) after him, so that to this day Bashan is called Havvoth Jair. [ d ] ) 15 And I gave Gilead to Makir. ( X ) 16 But to the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave the territory extending from Gilead down to the Arnon Gorge (the middle of the gorge being the border) and out to the Jabbok River, ( Y ) which is the border of the Ammonites. 17 Its western border was the Jordan in the Arabah, ( Z ) from Kinnereth ( AA ) to the Sea of the Arabah ( AB ) (that is, the Dead Sea ( AC ) ), below the slopes of Pisgah.

18 I commanded you at that time: “The Lord your God has given ( AD ) you this land to take possession of it. But all your able-bodied men, armed for battle, must cross over ahead of the other Israelites. ( AE ) 19 However, your wives, ( AF ) your children and your livestock ( AG ) (I know you have much livestock) may stay in the towns I have given you, 20 until the Lord gives rest to your fellow Israelites as he has to you, and they too have taken over the land that the Lord your God is giving them across the Jordan. After that, each of you may go back to the possession I have given you.”

Moses Forbidden to Cross the Jordan

21 At that time I commanded Joshua: “You have seen with your own eyes all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings. The Lord will do the same to all the kingdoms over there where you are going. 22 Do not be afraid ( AH ) of them; ( AI ) the Lord your God himself will fight ( AJ ) for you.”

23 At that time I pleaded ( AK ) with the Lord : 24 “Sovereign Lord , you have begun to show to your servant your greatness ( AL ) and your strong hand. For what god ( AM ) is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and mighty works ( AN ) you do? ( AO ) 25 Let me go over and see the good land ( AP ) beyond the Jordan—that fine hill country and Lebanon. ( AQ )

26 But because of you the Lord was angry ( AR ) with me and would not listen to me. “That is enough,” the Lord said. “Do not speak to me anymore about this matter. 27 Go up to the top of Pisgah ( AS ) and look west and north and south and east. ( AT ) Look at the land with your own eyes, since you are not going to cross ( AU ) this Jordan. ( AV ) 28 But commission ( AW ) Joshua, and encourage ( AX ) and strengthen him, for he will lead this people across ( AY ) and will cause them to inherit the land that you will see.” 29 So we stayed in the valley near Beth Peor. ( AZ )
