25 When there is an argument between two people, they must both go to the judges. Then the judges will decide which of the two people is right. They will decide the punishment for the guilty person. 2 The judge may decide that his officers should beat the guilty person as punishment. The judge will make him lie down on the ground. Then he will watch as his officers beat the guilty person. They will hit him as many times as he deserves because of his wicked act. 3 But they must not hit him more than 40 times as his punishment. If it is more than that, nobody would respect him any more.
4 Do not tie shut the mouth of your ox while it walks on your grain to prepare it for you. [ a ]
5 Perhaps two brothers live together in the same place. One of the brothers may die before he has any son. If that happens, his widow must not marry anyone who does not belong to the family. Instead, the other brother must marry her. That is the right thing for him to do for his dead brother. 6 The first son that the widow gives birth to will be the son of her first husband. His family's name will not disappear from Israel.
7 But the man may not want to marry his brother's widow. If so, this is what the widow must do: She must go to the leaders when they meet at the town gate. She must say, ‘My dead husband's brother refuses to do his duty for me. He does not want his brother to have any descendants so that his family's name will continue.’
8 Then the town's leaders must call the man to come to them. They must talk to him. Perhaps he will continue to say, ‘I do not want to marry her!’
9 If that happens, his brother's widow must go near him, as the leaders watch. She must pull off one of his shoes and then she must spit in his face. She must say, ‘This is what we do to a man who will not give descendants to his dead brother!’ 10 After that, people will call that man's family, ‘the family of the man who lost his shoe.’
11 Perhaps two men are fighting each other. The wife of one of them comes to help him. She tries to save him from his enemy who is attacking him. Perhaps she takes hold of the man's sex parts. 12 If she does that, you must cut off her hand as punishment. Do not be sorry for her.
13 Do not try to cheat people when you weigh or measure things. Do not carry with you two different stone weights, one light one and one heavy one. 14 Do not keep in your house two different bowls to measure things, one big one and one small one. 15 You must keep true and honest weights. You must have bowls that measure things correctly. If you do that you will live for a long time in the land that the Lord your God is giving to you. 16 The Lord your God hates anyone who cheats other people and is not honest.
17 Remember what the Amalekites did to you when you came out of Egypt. [ b ] 18 They attacked you when you were tired and weak. They killed all the people who were walking slowly at the back of your group. They were not afraid of God. 19 But the Lord your God will chase away all your enemies. He will give you a safe place to rest in the land that he is giving to you as your new home. When he does that, do not forget to destroy all the Amalekites. Make sure that nobody in the whole world will remember them any more.
25 “When two people have an argument, they should go to the court. 4 “When an animal is being used to separate grain, you must not cover its mouth to stop it from eating.
5 “If two brothers live together, and one of them dies without a son, the wife of the dead man must not marry a stranger outside the family. Her husband’s brother must take her as his wife and have sexual relations with her. He must do the duty of a husband’s brother for her. 6 Then the first son she has will be considered the dead man’s son in order to keep the dead man’s name alive in Israel. 7 If the man does not want to take his brother’s wife, she must go to the town meeting place and tell the leaders, ‘My husband’s brother refuses to keep his brother’s name alive in Israel. He will not do the duty of a husband’s brother to me.’ 8 Then the leaders of the city must call the man and talk to him. If the man is stubborn and says, ‘I don’t want to take her,’ 9 then his brother’s wife must come to him in front of the leaders. She must take his sandal off his foot and spit in his face. She must say, ‘This is being done to the man who will not give his brother a son!’ 10 From then on, the brother’s family will be known in Israel as, ‘the family of the man whose sandal was removed.’
11 “Two men might be fighting against each other. One man’s wife might come to help her husband, but she must not grab the other man’s private parts. 12 If she does that, cut off her hand. Don’t feel sorry for her.
13 “Don’t use weights that are too heavy or too light. 14 Don’t keep measures in your house that are too large or too small. 15 You must use weights and measures that are correct and accurate. Then you will live a long time in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 16 The Lord your God hates people who cheat with false weights and measures. Yes, he hates all people who do wrong.
17 “Remember what the Amalekites did to you when you were coming from Egypt. 18 The Amalekites did not respect God. They attacked you when you were weak and tired. They killed all your people who were slow and walking behind everyone else. 19 That is why you must destroy the memory of the Amalekites from the world. You will do this when you enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you. There he will give you rest from all the enemies around you. But do not forget to destroy the Amalekites!
25 If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked.
2 And it shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number.
3 Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed: lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile unto thee.
4 Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn.
5 If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband's brother unto her.
6 And it shall be, that the firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.
7 And if the man like not to take his brother's wife, then let his brother's wife go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband's brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel, he will not perform the duty of my husband's brother.
8 Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak unto him: and if he stand to it, and say, I like not to take her;
9 Then shall his brother's wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother's house.
10 And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him that hath his shoe loosed.
11 When men strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near for to deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the secrets:
12 Then thou shalt cut off her hand, thine eye shall not pity her.
13 Thou shalt not have in thy bag divers weights, a great and a small.
14 Thou shalt not have in thine house divers measures, a great and a small.
15 But thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
16 For all that do such things, and all that do unrighteously, are an abomination unto the Lord thy God.
17 Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way, when ye were come forth out of Egypt;
18 How he met thee by the way, and smote the hindmost of thee, even all that were feeble behind thee, when thou wast faint and weary; and he feared not God.
19 Therefore it shall be, when the Lord thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not forget it.
25 “ ( A ) If there is a dispute between people and they go to [ a ] court, and [ b ] the judges decide their case, ( B ) and they declare the righteous innocent and pronounce the wicked guilty, 2 then it shall be if the wicked person [ c ] ( C ) deserves to be beaten, the judge shall then make him lie down and have him beaten in his presence with the number of lashes according to his [ d ] wrongful act. 3 ( D ) He may have him beaten forty times, but not more, so that he does not have him beaten with many more lashes than these, and that your brother does not ( E ) become contemptible in your eyes.
4 “ ( F ) You shall not muzzle the ox while it is threshing.
5 “When brothers live together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the deceased shall not be married outside the family to a strange man. ( G ) Her husband’s brother shall have relations with her and take her to himself as his wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her. 6 It shall then be that the firstborn to whom she gives birth shall [ e ] assume the name of his father’s deceased brother, so that ( H ) his name will not be wiped out from Israel. 7 ( I ) But if the man does not desire to take his brother’s widow, then his brother’s widow shall go up to the gate to the elders, and say, ‘My husband’s brother refuses to establish a name for his brother in Israel; he is not willing to perform the duty of a husband’s brother to me.’ 8 Then the elders of his city shall summon him and speak to him. And if he persists and says, ‘I do not desire to take her,’ 9 ( J ) then his brother’s widow shall come up to him in the sight of the elders, and pull his sandal off his foot and ( K ) spit in his face; and she shall [ f ] declare, ‘This is what is done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house!’ 10 And in Israel [ g ] his family shall be called by the name, ‘The house of him whose sandal was removed.’
11 “If two men, a man and his countryman, have a fight [ h ] with each other, and the wife of one comes up to save her husband from the hand of the one who is hitting him, and she reaches out with her hand and grasps [ i ] that man’s genitals, 12 then you shall cut off her [ j ] hand; [ k ] ( L ) you shall not show pity.
13 “ ( M ) You shall not have in your bag [ l ] differing weights, a large and a small. 14 You shall not have in your house [ m ] differing measures, a large and a small. 15 You shall have a correct and honest [ n ] weight; you shall have a correct and honest [ o ] measure, ( N ) so that your days may be prolonged [ p ] in the land which the Lord your God is giving you. 16 For ( O ) everyone who does these things, everyone who acts unjustly is an abomination to the Lord your God.
17 “ ( P ) Remember what Amalek did to you on the way when you came out of Egypt, 18 how he confronted you on the way and attacked among you all the stragglers at your rear when you were tired and weary; and he ( Q ) did not [ q ] fear God. 19 So it shall come about, when the Lord your God has given you ( R ) rest from all your surrounding enemies in the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to [ r ] possess, that you shall wipe out the mention of the name Amalek from under heaven; you must not forget.
25 When people have a dispute, they are to take it to court and the judges ( A ) will decide the case, ( B ) acquitting ( C ) the innocent and condemning the guilty. ( D ) 2 If the guilty person deserves to be beaten, ( E ) the judge shall make them lie down and have them flogged in his presence with the number of lashes the crime deserves, 3 but the judge must not impose more than forty lashes. ( F ) If the guilty party is flogged more than that, your fellow Israelite will be degraded in your eyes. ( G )
4 Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain. ( H )

Her husband’s brother shall take her and marry her and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her. ( I ) 6 The first son she bears shall carry on the name of the dead brother so that his name will not be blotted out from Israel. ( J )
7 However, if a man does not want to marry his brother’s wife, ( K ) she shall go to the elders at the town gate ( L ) and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to carry on his brother’s name in Israel. He will not fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to me.” ( M ) 8 Then the elders of his town shall summon him and talk to him. If he persists in saying, “I do not want to marry her,” 9 his brother’s widow shall go up to him in the presence of the elders, take off one of his sandals, ( N ) spit in his face ( O ) and say, “This is what is done to the man who will not build up his brother’s family line.” 10 That man’s line shall be known in Israel as The Family of the Unsandaled.
11 If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, 12 you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity. ( P )
13 Do not have two differing weights in your bag—one heavy, one light. ( Q ) 14 Do not have two differing measures in your house—one large, one small. 15 You must have accurate and honest weights and measures, so that you may live long ( R ) in the land the Lord your God is giving you. 16 For the Lord your God detests anyone who does these things, anyone who deals dishonestly. ( S )
17 Remember what the Amalekites ( T ) did to you along the way when you came out of Egypt. 18 When you were weary and worn out, they met you on your journey and attacked all who were lagging behind; they had no fear of God. ( U ) 19 When the Lord your God gives you rest ( V ) from all the enemies ( W ) around you in the land he is giving you to possess as an inheritance, you shall blot out the name of Amalek ( X ) from under heaven. Do not forget!
