Acts 2

The Holy Spirit comes

2 Then the day of the Pentecost festival arrived. All the believers were meeting together in one place. [ a ] 2 Suddenly, as they were sitting together, they heard a noise. The noise came from the sky and it filled the whole house. It was like the sound of a strong wind. 3 Then they saw something that looked like many small fires. The separate fires moved and went to sit on each person there. 4 All the believers became full with the Holy Spirit. They began to speak in languages that they had not learned. They spoke whatever language the Holy Spirit helped them to speak.

5 At that time, Jews who came from many different countries in the world were staying in Jerusalem. They were Jews who carefully obeyed God's Law. 6 When these Jews heard the noise, a large crowd of them came together in that place. As the believers spoke, each person in the crowd could hear the message in their own language. This confused them. 7 They were very surprised and they said to each other, ‘These men who are speaking our languages are all from Galilee. 8 But each of us can hear them speak in the language of our own home country. How can this happen? 9 Some of us are from Parthia, Media and Elam. Some of us live in Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia. Some of us are from Pontus and Asia. 10 Some of us are from Phrygia and Pamphylia. Some of us are from Egypt. Some of us are from the country of Libya, near the town of Cyrene. Some of us have come from Rome to visit Jerusalem. 11 Some of us were born as Jews. Others of us are Gentiles who now obey God as the Jews do. Some of us are from Crete and some of us are from Arabia. But we all hear these people speaking in our own languages. They are speaking about all the great things that God has done.’

12 All the people were very surprised. They did not understand what was happening. ‘What does all this mean?’ they asked each other. 13 But some other people laughed at the disciples. They said, ‘These people have drunk too much wine!’

Peter speaks to the crowd

14 Peter was there with the other 11 apostles and he stood up with them. He began to speak to the crowd with a loud voice. He said, ‘You people who are Jews like us, listen carefully to me. All of you who live here in Jerusalem, you also listen to me. I will explain to you everything that is happening. 15 Some of you think that my friends here are drunk. But they are not drunk, because it is only nine o'clock in the morning. [ b ] 16 No, something different is happening here. Long ago, the prophet Joel spoke God's message about all this. This is what he said: [ c ]

17 God says “This is what I will do in the last days.
I will give my Spirit to all people.
Your sons and daughters will speak my message to people.
Your young men will see visions in their minds.
And your old men will see things in their dreams.
18 At that time, I will give my Spirit to all my servants,
both men and women.
Then they will speak my message to people.
19 I will cause special things to appear in the sky.
I will cause special things to appear on the earth too.
Those things will show how great I am.
There will be blood, fire and thick dark smoke.
20 The sun will become dark to people.
The moon will become dark red like the colour of blood.
These things will happen before the great day of the Lord arrives.
That will be a wonderful day!
21 The Lord will save everyone who asks him to help them.” ’

22 Peter then said, ‘People of Israel, listen to what I am saying! Jesus, the man from Nazareth, came with God's authority to do his work. God did many powerful and special things through him. These miracles showed you clearly that God had sent him. You know about all this. These things happened here, and you saw them. 23 God knew that Jesus' enemies would give him to you. God had decided that this should happen. You let people who do not obey God's Law fix him to the cross. In that way you killed him. 24 But after his death, God caused him to become alive again. God saved Jesus from the power of death. It was impossible for death to keep hold of him. 25 A long time ago, King David spoke about the Messiah in this way:

“I saw the Lord near me all the time.
He is next to me, on my right side,
so nothing will cause me trouble.
26 Because of this, I am very happy,
and I will praise you, God.
I am human and one day I will die,
but I know that you will help me while I live.
27 When I die, you will not leave me in Hades, the place for dead people.
You will not let anything destroy the body of your Holy One.
28 You have shown me the paths that lead to life with you.
I will be completely happy because you will be with me for ever.” ’ [ d ]

29 Peter then said, ‘Friends, people of Israel, I must speak clearly to you about our ancestor, King David. He died and people buried his body in the ground. You can still see the place where people buried him. 30 He was a prophet. He knew what God had promised to do for him. He knew that one of his descendants would be king of God's people one day. 31 David understood what God would do in a future time. He did not speak about himself, but he spoke about the Messiah. He said that God would cause this man to become alive again after his death. God would not let him remain in Hades, the place for dead people. Nothing would destroy his body. 32 This man that David talked about is Jesus. After his death, God caused him to become alive again. We ourselves saw this happen. All of us saw it. 33 God took Jesus back up to heaven. He caused Jesus to sit at his right side, the place of great honour. Jesus received the Holy Spirit from his Father God, so that he could give the Spirit to us. This is what God had promised to do. God has poured his Holy Spirit on us. Now you are seeing and hearing the result of this. 34 King David himself did not go up into heaven like Jesus did. But David said:

“The Lord God said to my Lord:
Sit at my right side until I beat your enemies completely.
35 Then you will be able to put your feet on them.” [ e ]

36 So all you people of Israel must be sure to know this: It is this same Jesus that God has chosen to be the Messiah. God has made him to be our Lord. But you fixed him to a cross and you killed him.’

37 The people heard what Peter said to them. They were very upset. So they said to Peter and the other apostles, ‘Friends, tell us what we should do.’

38 Peter said to them, ‘Each of you must stop doing wrong things. You must change how you live. If you believe in Jesus Christ, then we will baptize you. God will forgive you for the wrong things that you have done. Then you will receive the Holy Spirit, who is God's gift to you. 39 God has promised to do all this for you and your children. He has also promised this to people who live far away in other places. The Lord our God will do it for all the people that he has called to come to him.’

40 Peter also told them many other things. He continued to speak strongly to them. He told them to be careful and he said, ‘People who are alive today do not do what is right. Save yourselves from the punishment that God will send on them.’

41 Many of the people who listened to Peter believed his message. So the apostles baptized those people. About three thousand people who now believed in Jesus joined the group that same day.

How the believers lived

42 These new believers listened carefully to what the apostles taught them. They joined with everyone else in the group. They prayed together and they ate meals together. [ f ]

43 The apostles did many miracles which showed that the power of God was with them. As a result, all the people were very surprised and afraid. 44 All the believers continued to meet together often. They shared all their things with each other. 45 They sold some of their own things. Then they gave that money to any believers who needed it. 46 The whole group of believers met together every day in the yard of the temple. They shared their food and they ate meals together in each other's homes. They were very happy and they were honest with each other. 47 All the time, they praised God. All the other people thought that the believers were good people. Every day, the Lord saved more people so that the group of believers grew bigger.

Footnotes

  1. 2:1 The Jewish Day of Pentecost was 50 days after the Passover meal.
  2. 2:15 On the Day of Pentecost, the Jews prayed at nine o'clock. Then they ate their first meal of the day at 10 o'clock. So at nine o'clock they would not yet have had any food or drink that day. So they could not be drunk.
  3. 2:16 See Joel 2:28-32 .
  4. 2:28 See Psalms 16:8-11 .
  5. 2:35 See Psalms 110:1 .
  6. 2:42 When believers ate together they also remembered Jesus' death for them.

The Coming of the Holy Spirit

2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a noise came from heaven. It sounded like a strong wind blowing. This noise filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw something that looked like flames of fire. The flames were separated and stood over each person there. 4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak different languages. The Holy Spirit was giving them the power to do this.

5 There were some godly Jews in Jerusalem at this time. They were from every country in the world. 6 A large crowd came together because they heard the noise. They were surprised because, as the apostles were speaking, everyone heard in their own language.

7 They were all amazed at this. They did not understand how the apostles could do this. They said, “Look! These men we hear speaking are all from Galilee. [ a ] 8 But we hear them in our own languages. How is this possible? We are from all these different places: 9 Parthia, Media, Elam, Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, 10 Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the areas of Libya near the city of Cyrene, Rome, 11 Crete, and Arabia. Some of us were born Jews, and others have changed their religion to worship God like Jews. We are from these different countries, but we can hear these men in our own languages! We can all understand the great things they are saying about God.”

12 The people were all amazed and confused. They asked each other, “What is happening?” 13 But others were laughing at the apostles, saying they were drunk from too much wine.

Peter Speaks to the People

14 Then Peter stood up with the other eleven apostles. He spoke loudly so that all the people could hear. He said, “My Jewish brothers and all of you who live in Jerusalem, listen to me. I will tell you something you need to know. Listen carefully. 15 These men are not drunk as you think; it’s only nine o’clock in the morning. 16 But Joel the prophet wrote about what you see happening here today. This is what he wrote:

17 ‘God says: In the last days
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your young men will see visions.
Your old men will have special dreams.
18 In those days I will pour out my Spirit
on my servants, men and women,
and they will prophesy.
19 I will work wonders in the sky above.
I will cause miraculous signs on the earth below.
There will be blood, fire, and thick smoke.
20 The sun will be changed into darkness,
and the moon will be as red as blood.
Then the great and glorious day of the Lord will come.
21 And everyone who trusts in the Lord [ b ] will be saved.’ ( A )

22 “My fellow Israelites, listen to these words: Jesus from Nazareth was a very special man. God clearly showed this to you. He proved it by the miracles, wonders, and miraculous signs he did through Jesus. You all saw these things, so you know this is true. 23 Jesus was handed over to you, and you killed him. With the help of evil men, you nailed him to a cross. But God knew all this would happen. It was his plan—a plan he made long ago. 24 Jesus suffered the pain of death, but God made him free. He raised him from death. There was no way for death to hold him. 25 David said this about him:

‘I saw the Lord before me always;
he is at my right side to keep me safe.
26 So my heart is happy,
and the words I speak are words of joy.
Yes, even my body will live with hope,
27 because you will not leave me in the place of death. [ c ]
You will not let the body of your Holy One rot in the grave.
28 You taught me how to live.
You will come close to me and give me great joy.’ ( B )

29 “My brothers, I can tell you for sure about David, our great ancestor. He died, was buried, and his tomb is still here with us today. 30 He was a prophet and knew something that God had said. God had promised David that someone from his own family would sit on David’s throne as king. [ d ] 31 David knew this before it happened. That is why he said this about that future king:

‘He was not left in the place of death.
His body did not rot in the grave.’

David was talking about the Messiah rising from death. 32 So Jesus is the one God raised from death. We are all witnesses of this. We saw him. 33 Jesus was lifted up to heaven. Now he is with God, at God’s right side. The Father has given the Holy Spirit to him, as he promised. So Jesus has now poured out that Spirit. This is what you see and hear. 34 David was not the one who was lifted up to heaven. David himself said,

‘The Lord God said to my Lord:
Sit at my right side,
35 until I put your enemies under your power. [ e ] ( C )

36 “So, all the people of Israel should know this for certain: God has made Jesus to be Lord and Messiah. He is the man you nailed to the cross!”

37 When the people heard this, they felt very, very sorry. They asked Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”

38 Peter said to them, “Change your hearts and lives and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ. Then God will forgive your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 This promise is for you. It is also for your children and for the people who are far away. It is for everyone the Lord our God calls to himself.”

40 Peter warned them with many other words; he begged them, “Save yourselves from the evil of the people who live now!” 41 Then those who accepted what Peter said were baptized. On that day about 3000 people were added to the group of believers.

The Believers Share

42 The believers spent their time listening to the teaching of the apostles. They shared everything with each other. They ate [ f ] together and prayed together. 43 Many wonders and miraculous signs were happening through the apostles, and everyone felt great respect for God. 44 All the believers stayed together and shared everything. 45 They sold their land and the things they owned. Then they divided the money and gave it to those who needed it. 46 The believers shared a common purpose, and every day they spent much of their time together in the Temple area. They also ate together in their homes. They were happy to share their food and ate with joyful hearts. 47 The believers praised God and were respected by all the people. More and more people were being saved every day, and the Lord was adding them to their group.

  6. Acts 2:42 ate Literally, “broke bread.” This may mean a meal or the Lord’s Supper, the special meal Jesus told his followers to eat to remember him. Also in verse 46. See Lk. 22:14-20.

2 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?

8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,

10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,

11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?

13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:

15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:

20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come:

21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:

23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:

26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:

27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.

29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.

30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;

31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.

33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.

34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.

36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.

41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

The Day of Pentecost

2 When ( A ) the day of Pentecost [ a ] had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly a noise like a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled ( B ) the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And tongues that looked like fire appeared to them, [ b ] distributing themselves, and a tongue [ c ] rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all ( C ) filled with the Holy Spirit and began to ( D ) speak with different [ d ] tongues, as the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out.

5 Now there were Jews residing in Jerusalem, ( E ) devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And when ( F ) this sound occurred, the crowd came together and they were bewildered, because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own [ e ] language. 7 ( G ) They were amazed and astonished, saying, “ [ f ] Why, are not all these who are speaking ( H ) Galileans? 8 And how is it that we each hear them in our own [ g ] language [ h ] to which we were born? 9 Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, and ( I ) Cappadocia, ( J ) Pontus and [ i ] ( K ) Asia, 10 ( L ) Phrygia and ( M ) Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya around ( N ) Cyrene, and [ j ] ( O ) visitors from Rome, both Jews and [ k ] ( P ) proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own [ l ] tongues of the mighty deeds of God.” 12 And ( Q ) they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others were jeering and saying, “ ( R ) They are full of [ m ] sweet wine!”

Peter’s Sermon

14 But Peter, taking his stand with ( S ) the other eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, [ n ] know this, and pay attention to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you assume, ( T ) since it is only the [ o ] third hour of the day; 16 but this is what has been spoken through the prophet Joel:

17 ( U ) And it shall be in the last days ,’ God says,
That I will pour out My Spirit on all [ p ] mankind ;
And your sons and your daughters will prophesy ,
And your young men will see visions ,
And your old men will [ q ] have dreams ;
18 And even on My male and female [ r ] servants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days ,
And they will prophesy.
19 And I will [ s ] display wonders in the sky above
And signs on the earth below ,
Blood, fire, and [ t ] vapor of smoke .
20 The sun will be turned into darkness
And the moon into blood ,
Before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes .
21 And it shall be that ( V ) everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved .’

22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: ( W ) Jesus the Nazarene, ( X ) a Man [ u ] attested to you by God with [ v ] miracles and ( Y ) wonders and [ w ] signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know— 23 this Man , delivered over by the ( Z ) predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, ( AA ) you nailed to a cross by the hands of [ x ] godless men and put Him to death. 24 [ y ] But ( AB ) God raised Him from the dead , putting an end to the [ z ] agony of death, since it ( AC ) was impossible for Him to be held [ aa ] in its power. 25 For David says of Him,

( AD ) I saw the Lord continually before me ,
Because He is at my right hand, so that I will not be shaken .
26 Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue was overjoyed ;
Moreover my flesh also will live in hope ;
27 For You will not abandon my soul to ( AE ) Hades ,
( AF ) Nor will You [ ab ] allow Your [ ac ] Holy One to [ ad ] undergo decay .
28 You have made known to me the ways of life ;
You will make me full of gladness with Your presence .’

29 [ ae ] Brothers, I may confidently say to you regarding the ( AG ) patriarch David that he both ( AH ) died and ( AI ) was buried, and ( AJ ) his tomb is [ af ] with us to this day. 30 So because he was ( AK ) a prophet and knew that ( AL ) God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one [ ag ] of his descendants on his throne, 31 he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the [ ah ] Christ, that ( AM ) He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh [ ai ] suffer decay. 32 It is this Jesus whom ( AN ) God raised up, [ aj ] a fact to which we are all ( AO ) witnesses. 33 Therefore, [ ak ] since He has been exalted [ al ] ( AP ) at the right hand of God, and ( AQ ) has received ( AR ) the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father, He has ( AS ) poured out this which you both see and hear. 34 For it was not David who ascended into [ am ] heaven, but he himself says:

( AT ) The Lord said to my Lord ,
Sit at My right hand ,
35 Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet .”’

36 Therefore let all the ( AU ) house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both ( AV ) Lord and [ an ] Christ—this Jesus ( AW ) whom you crucified.”

37 Now when they heard this , they were [ ao ] pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “ [ ap ] Brothers, ( AX ) what are we to do?” 38 Peter said to them, “ ( AY ) Repent, and each of you be ( AZ ) baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For ( BA ) the promise is for you and your children and for all who are ( BB ) far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.” 40 And with many other words he solemnly ( BC ) testified and kept on urging them, saying, “ [ aq ] Be saved from this ( BD ) perverse generation!” 41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand [ ar ] ( BE ) souls. 42 They were ( BF ) continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to ( BG ) the breaking of bread and ( BH ) to [ as ] prayer.

43 [ at ] Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many ( BI ) wonders and [ au ] signs were taking place through the apostles. 44 And all the believers [ av ] were together and ( BJ ) had all things in common; 45 and they ( BK ) would sell their property and possessions and share them with all, to the extent that anyone had need. 46 ( BL ) Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and ( BM ) breaking bread [ aw ] from house to house, they were taking their [ ax ] meals together with gladness and [ ay ] sincerity of heart, 47 praising God and ( BN ) having favor with all the people. And the Lord ( BO ) was adding to [ az ] their number day by day ( BP ) those who were being saved.

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost

2 When the day of Pentecost ( A ) came, they were all together ( B ) in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. ( C ) 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit ( D ) and began to speak in other tongues [ a ] ( E ) as the Spirit enabled them.

5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing ( F ) Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, ( G ) they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? ( H ) 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, ( I ) Pontus ( J ) and Asia, [ b ] ( K ) 10 Phrygia ( L ) and Pamphylia, ( M ) Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; ( N ) visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.” ( O )

Peter Addresses the Crowd

14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! ( P ) 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 “‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people. ( Q )
Your sons and daughters will prophesy, ( R )
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy. ( S )
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below, ( T )
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood ( U )
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord ( V ) will be saved.’ [ c ] ( W )

22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth ( X ) was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, ( Y ) which God did among you through him, ( Z ) as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; ( AA ) and you, with the help of wicked men, [ d ] put him to death by nailing him to the cross. ( AB ) 24 But God raised him from the dead, ( AC ) freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. ( AD ) 25 David said about him:

“‘I saw the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest in hope,
27 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
you will not let your holy one see decay. ( AE )
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.’ [ e ] ( AF )

29 “Fellow Israelites, ( AG ) I can tell you confidently that the patriarch ( AH ) David died and was buried, ( AI ) and his tomb is here ( AJ ) to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. ( AK ) 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. ( AL ) 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, ( AM ) and we are all witnesses ( AN ) of it. 33 Exalted ( AO ) to the right hand of God, ( AP ) he has received from the Father ( AQ ) the promised Holy Spirit ( AR ) and has poured out ( AS ) what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
35 until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”’ [ f ] ( AT )

36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord ( AU ) and Messiah.” ( AV )

37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” ( AW )

38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, ( AX ) every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. ( AY ) And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. ( AZ ) 39 The promise is for you and your children ( BA ) and for all who are far off ( BB ) —for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” ( BC ) 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number ( BD ) that day.

The Fellowship of the Believers

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching ( BE ) and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread ( BF ) and to prayer. ( BG ) 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. ( BH ) 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. ( BI ) 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. ( BJ ) 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. ( BK ) They broke bread ( BL ) in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. ( BM ) And the Lord added to their number ( BN ) daily those who were being saved.
