24 While Jehoiakim was king, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon attacked Judah. Jehoiakim was under Nebuchadnezzar's authority for three years. But then Jehoiakim turned against Nebuchadnezzar. 2 The Lord sent groups of soldiers to attack towns in Judah. The soldiers came from Babylon, Syria, Moab and Ammon. The Lord sent them to destroy Judah. He had already sent his servants, the prophets, to warn the people of Judah about this. 3 The Lord had said that these things must happen. He had decided to send Judah away from himself because of the sins that King Manasseh had done. 4 Manasseh had murdered people who had not done anything wrong. Their blood was in the streets of Jerusalem. The Lord would not agree to forgive Manasseh for his sins.
5 The other things that happened while Jehoiakim was king are written in a book. The book is called ‘The history of Judah's kings’. It tells about the things that Jehoiakim did. 6 Jehoiakim died and they buried him beside his ancestors. His son Jehoiachin became king after him.
7 The king of Egypt did not take his army out of his own country again. That was because the king of Babylon had taken a lot of Egypt's land for himself. He had taken all the land between the Stream of Egypt and the River Euphrates. Before that, the king of Egypt had authority over that land.
8 Jehoiachin was 18 years old when he became king. He ruled as king in Jerusalem for three months. His mother's name was Nehushta. She was the daughter of Elnathan, who came from Jerusalem. 9 Jehoiachin did things that the Lord said were evil, as his father had done.
10 King Nebuchadnezzar's officers took their army to attack Jerusalem. They made their camp all around the city. 11 Then King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came up to Jerusalem himself while his officers were there.
12 Jehoiachin, the king of Judah, went out of the city to put himself under King Nebuchadnezzar's authority. He went with his mother, his servants, his leaders and his palace officers. In the eighth year that King Nebuchadnezzar ruled as king, he made Jehoiachin his prisoner.
13 King Nebuchadnezzar took all the valuable things from the Lord 's temple and from the king's palace. He cut away all the gold things that King Solomon had made for the Lord 's temple. The Lord had already warned that this would happen. 14 Nebuchadnezzar took away as his prisoners all the people who lived in Jerusalem. There were 10,000 people. They included all the officers and all the soldiers. He also took away the people who had special skills to work with wood and metal. The only people who remained in Judah were the very poor people.
15 Nebuchadnezzar took Jehoiachin away from Jerusalem as his prisoner to Babylon. He also took the king's mother, his wives, his officers and the important leaders of Judah. 16 The king of Babylon also took away to Babylon all the soldiers of Judah's army. There were 7,000 soldiers. They included the best fighters. He also took 1,000 workers who had special skills to make things with wood and metal. 17 Nebuchadnezzar chose Jehoiachin's uncle, Mattaniah, to be king instead of Jehoiachin. Nebuchadnezzar changed Mattaniah's name to Zedekiah.
18 Zedekiah was 21 years old when he became king. He ruled in Jerusalem for 11 years. His mother's name was Hamutal. She was the daughter of Jeremiah, who came from Libnah. 19 Zedekiah did things that the Lord said were evil, as Jehoiakim had done.
20 All this trouble happened to Jerusalem and to Judah because the Lord was very angry with them. In the end, the Lord sent them away from himself.
This is what happened when King Zedekiah turned against the king of Babylon.
24 In the time of Jehoiakim, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came to the country of Judah. Jehoiakim served Nebuchadnezzar for three years. Then Jehoiakim turned against Nebuchadnezzar and broke away from his rule. 2 The Lord sent groups of Babylonians, Arameans, Moabites, and Ammonites to fight against Jehoiakim. He sent them to destroy Judah. This happened just as the Lord had said. He used his servants the prophets to say those things.
3 The Lord commanded this to happen to Judah. In this way he would remove them from his sight. He did this because of all the sins that Manasseh committed. 4 He did this because Manasseh killed many innocent people and filled Jerusalem with their blood. The Lord would not forgive these sins.
5 The other things that Jehoiakim did are written in the book, The History of the Kings of Judah . 6 Jehoiakim died and was buried with his ancestors. His son Jehoiachin became the new king after him.
7 The king of Babylon captured all the land between the Brook of Egypt and the Euphrates River. This land was previously controlled by Egypt. So the king of Egypt did not leave Egypt anymore.
8 Jehoiachin was 18 years old when he began to rule. He ruled three months in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Nehushta daughter of Elnathan from Jerusalem. 9 Jehoiachin did what the Lord said was wrong. He did all the same things that his father had done.
10 At that time the officers of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came to Jerusalem and surrounded it. 11 Then King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came to the city. 12 King Jehoiachin of Judah went out to meet the king of Babylon. His mother, his officers, leaders, and officials also went with him. Then the king of Babylon captured Jehoiachin. This was during the eighth year of Nebuchadnezzar’s rule.
13 Nebuchadnezzar took from Jerusalem all the treasures in the Lord ’s Temple and all the treasures in the king’s palace. He cut up all the golden dishes that King Solomon of Israel had put in the Lord ’s Temple. This happened just as the Lord had said.
14 Nebuchadnezzar captured all the people of Jerusalem, including the leaders and other wealthy people. He took 10,000 people and made them prisoners. He took all the skilled workers and craftsmen. No one was left, except the poorest of the common people. 15 Nebuchadnezzar took Jehoiachin to Babylon as a prisoner. He also took the king’s mother, his wives, officers, and the leading men of the land. He took them from Jerusalem to Babylon as prisoners. 16 There were 7000 soldiers. Nebuchadnezzar took all the soldiers and 1000 of the skilled workers and craftsmen. All these men were trained soldiers, ready for war. The king of Babylon took them to Babylon as prisoners.
17 The king of Babylon made Mattaniah the new king. Mattaniah was Jehoiachin’s uncle. He changed his name to Zedekiah. 18 Zedekiah was 21 years old when he began to rule. He ruled 11 years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah from Libnah. 19 Zedekiah did what the Lord said was wrong. He did all the same things that Jehoiakim did. 20 The Lord became so angry with Jerusalem and Judah that he threw them away.
Zedekiah rebelled and refused to obey the king of Babylon.
24 In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his servant three years: then he turned and rebelled against him.
2 And the Lord sent against him bands of the Chaldees, and bands of the Syrians, and bands of the Moabites, and bands of the children of Ammon, and sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord , which he spake by his servants the prophets.
3 Surely at the commandment of the Lord came this upon Judah, to remove them out of his sight, for the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he did;
4 And also for the innocent blood that he shed: for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood; which the Lord would not pardon.
5 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
6 So Jehoiakim slept with his fathers: and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead.
7 And the king of Egypt came not again any more out of his land: for the king of Babylon had taken from the river of Egypt unto the river Euphrates all that pertained to the king of Egypt.
8 Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. And his mother's name was Nehushta, the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem.
9 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord , according to all that his father had done.
10 At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem, and the city was besieged.
11 And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the city, and his servants did besiege it.
12 And Jehoiachin the king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon, he, and his mother, and his servants, and his princes, and his officers: and the king of Babylon took him in the eighth year of his reign.
13 And he carried out thence all the treasures of the house of the Lord , and the treasures of the king's house, and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold which Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the Lord , as the Lord had said.
14 And he carried away all Jerusalem, and all the princes, and all the mighty men of valour, even ten thousand captives, and all the craftsmen and smiths: none remained, save the poorest sort of the people of the land.
15 And he carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon, and the king's mother, and the king's wives, and his officers, and the mighty of the land, those carried he into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon.
16 And all the men of might, even seven thousand, and craftsmen and smiths a thousand, all that were strong and apt for war, even them the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon.
17 And the king of Babylon made Mattaniah his father's brother king in his stead, and changed his name to Zedekiah.
18 Zedekiah was twenty and one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.
19 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord , according to all that Jehoiakim had done.
20 For through the anger of the Lord it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah, until he had cast them out from his presence, that Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.
24 ( A ) In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his servant for three years; then he turned and revolted against him. 2 And the Lord sent against him ( B ) bands of Chaldeans, ( C ) bands of Arameans, ( D ) bands of Moabites, and bands of Ammonites. He sent them against Judah to destroy it, ( E ) in accordance with the word of the Lord which He had spoken through His servants the prophets. 3 ( F ) It indeed came upon Judah at the [ a ] command of the Lord , to remove them from His sight ( G ) due to the sins of Manasseh, in accordance with everything that he had done, 4 and ( H ) also for the innocent blood which he shed, for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood; and the Lord was unwilling to forgive. 5 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?
6 So ( I ) Jehoiakim [ b ] lay down with his fathers, and his son Jehoiachin became king in his place. 7 Now ( J ) the king of Egypt did not come out of his land again, ( K ) because the king of Babylon had taken everything that belonged to the king of Egypt from ( L ) the brook of Egypt to the river Euphrates.
8 ( M ) Jehoiachin was ( N ) eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned for three months in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Nehushta the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem. 9 He did evil in the sight of the Lord , ( O ) in accordance with all that his father had done.
10 At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon went up to Jerusalem, and the city came under siege. 11 And Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon came to the city, while his servants were besieging it. 12 Then ( P ) Jehoiachin the king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon, he, his mother, his servants, his commanders, and his officials. And ( Q ) the king of Babylon took him prisoner in the eighth year of his reign. 13 ( R ) He also brought out from there all the treasures of the house of the Lord , and the treasures of the king’s house, and he ( S ) smashed all the articles of gold ( T ) that Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the Lord , just as the Lord had said. 14 Then ( U ) he led into exile all the people of Jerusalem and all the commanders and all the valiant warriors, ( V ) ten thousand exiles, and ( W ) all the craftsmen and the smiths. None were left ( X ) except the poorest people of the land.
15 So ( Y ) he led Jehoiachin into exile to Babylon; also the king’s mother, the king’s wives, and his officials and the leading men of the land, he led into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. 16 And all the valiant men, ( Z ) seven thousand, and the craftsmen and the smiths, a thousand, all strong and fit for war, these too the king of Babylon brought into exile to Babylon.
17 ( AA ) Then the king of Babylon made [ c ] his uncle Mattaniah king in his place, and changed his name to Zedekiah.
18 ( AB ) Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was ( AC ) Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah. 19 He did evil in the sight of the Lord , ( AD ) in accordance with everything that Jehoiakim had done. 20 For it was ( AE ) due to the anger of the Lord that this happened in Jerusalem and Judah, until He cast them out of His presence. And ( AF ) Zedekiah revolted against the king of Babylon.
24 During Jehoiakim’s reign, Nebuchadnezzar ( A ) king of Babylon invaded ( B ) the land, and Jehoiakim became his vassal for three years. But then he turned against Nebuchadnezzar and rebelled. ( C ) 2 The Lord sent Babylonian, [ a ] ( D ) Aramean, ( E ) Moabite and Ammonite raiders ( F ) against him to destroy ( G ) Judah, in accordance with the word of the Lord proclaimed by his servants the prophets. ( H ) 3 Surely these things happened to Judah according to the Lord ’s command, ( I ) in order to remove them from his presence ( J ) because of the sins of Manasseh ( K ) and all he had done, 4 including the shedding of innocent blood. ( L ) For he had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the Lord was not willing to forgive. ( M )
5 As for the other events of Jehoiakim’s reign, ( N ) and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 6 Jehoiakim rested ( O ) with his ancestors. And Jehoiachin ( P ) his son succeeded him as king.
7 The king of Egypt ( Q ) did not march out from his own country again, because the king of Babylon ( R ) had taken all his territory, from the Wadi of Egypt to the Euphrates River.
8 Jehoiachin ( T ) was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother’s name was Nehushta ( U ) daughter of Elnathan; she was from Jerusalem. 9 He did evil ( V ) in the eyes of the Lord , just as his father had done.
10 At that time the officers of Nebuchadnezzar ( W ) king of Babylon advanced on Jerusalem and laid siege to it, 11 and Nebuchadnezzar himself came up to the city while his officers were besieging it. 12 Jehoiachin king of Judah, his mother, his attendants, his nobles and his officials all surrendered ( X ) to him.
In the eighth year of the reign of the king of Babylon, he took Jehoiachin prisoner. 13 As the Lord had declared, ( Y ) Nebuchadnezzar removed the treasures ( Z ) from the temple of the Lord and from the royal palace, and cut up the gold articles ( AA ) that Solomon ( AB ) king of Israel had made for the temple of the Lord . 14 He carried all Jerusalem into exile: ( AC ) all the officers and fighting men, ( AD ) and all the skilled workers and artisans—a total of ten thousand. Only the poorest ( AE ) people of the land were left.
15 Nebuchadnezzar took Jehoiachin ( AF ) captive to Babylon. He also took from Jerusalem to Babylon the king’s mother, ( AG ) his wives, his officials and the prominent people ( AH ) of the land. 16 The king of Babylon also deported to Babylon the entire force of seven thousand fighting men, strong and fit for war, and a thousand skilled workers and artisans. ( AI ) 17 He made Mattaniah, Jehoiachin’s uncle, king in his place and changed his name to Zedekiah. ( AJ )
18 Zedekiah ( AL ) was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. His mother’s name was Hamutal ( AM ) daughter of Jeremiah; she was from Libnah. 19 He did evil ( AN ) in the eyes of the Lord , just as Jehoiakim had done. 20 It was because of the Lord ’s anger that all this happened to Jerusalem and Judah, and in the end he thrust ( AO ) them from his presence. ( AP )
Now Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.
