2 john 1

John says ‘Hello’ to a special lady

1 This letter comes from me, the leader of the believers. I am writing to you, a special lady that God has chosen, and to your children. I love all of you, because you have believed God's true message. And I am not the only one who loves you. Everyone who knows the true message about God really loves you. 2 I love you because we have all come to understand what is true. It will remain with us for ever. [ a ]

3 God our Father, and his Son Jesus Christ will help us. He will be kind to us and he will give us peace in our minds. This will happen because God loves us and because we believe his true message.

4 I was very happy to hear about some of your children. I am happy because they are living in a good way. They are obeying the true message about God. They are doing what God our Father has told us to do.

Do not believe false teachers

5 So now, dear lady, I want you to do something. I want all of us to love one another. I am not telling you a new command to obey. This is a command that we have had from the beginning. 6 How do we show real love? We show it when we live in a way that makes God happy. We obey his commands. He tells us to love one another, and that is how you should live. You have heard that command from the beginning.

7 I say this because many false teachers are travelling around everywhere. They do not agree that Jesus Christ was born as a human baby. People like that are telling lies. They are enemies of Christ. 8 So be careful! Do not believe their lies. Do not lose the good things that we have worked for. Make sure that you receive all the good things that God has promised to give you. 9 Remember the message which Christ taught. Anyone who teaches his own ideas instead of Christ's true message does not belong to God. Continue to believe what Christ taught. Anyone who does that belongs to God the Father and to his Son, Jesus. 10 Someone may come to you and teach you something that is different. Do not receive that person into your house. Do not receive him as a Christian. 11 If you receive people like that as Christian people, you are making yourself the same as them. You also are doing the same kind of bad work.

12 I want to tell you many more things, but I do not want to write about them in a letter. Instead, I hope to come and visit you. Then I can see you and we can talk together. Then we will be completely happy.

13 The believers here say ‘hello’ to you. They are the children of your sister that God has chosen. [ b ]

Footnotes

  1. 1:2 When John wrote this letter to ‘a special lady’, he may have been writing it to a group of believers. Or he may have been writing it to someone who had a home where the believers met.
  2. 1:13 John talks about the group of believers who are with him as the sister of the lady that he is writing the letter to. The words ‘lady’ (in verse 1) and ‘sister’ (in verse 13) probably mean the groups of believers in two places.

1 Greetings from the Elder. [ a ]

To the lady [ b ] chosen by God and to her children.

I truly love all of you. And I am not the only one. All those who know the truth [ c ] love you in the same way. 2 We love you because of the truth—the truth that lives in us. That truth will be with us forever.

3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from his Son, Jesus Christ, as we live in truth and love.

4 I was very happy to learn about some of your children. I am happy that they are following the way of truth, just as the Father commanded us. 5 And now, dear lady, I tell you: We should all love each other. This is not a new command. It is the same command we had from the beginning. 6 And loving means living the way he commanded us to live. And God’s command is this: that you live a life of love. You heard this command from the beginning.

7 Many false teachers are in the world now. They refuse to say that Jesus Christ came to earth and became a man. Anyone who refuses to accept this fact is a false teacher and the enemy of Christ. 8 Be careful! Don’t lose the reward we [ d ] have worked for. Be careful so that you will receive all of that reward.

9 Everyone must continue to follow only the teaching about Christ. Whoever changes that teaching does not have God. But whoever continues to follow the teaching about Christ has both the Father and his Son. 10 Don’t accept those who come to you but do not bring this teaching. Don’t invite them into your house. Don’t welcome them in any way. 11 If you do, you are helping them with their evil work.

12 I have much to say to you. But I don’t want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to come visit you. Then we can be together and talk. That will make us very happy. 13 The children of your sister [ e ] who was chosen by God send you their love.

Footnotes

  1. 2 John 1:1 Elder This is probably John the apostle. “Elder” means an older man or a special leader in the church (as in Titus 1:5).
  2. 2 John 1:1 lady This might mean a woman. Or, in this letter, it might mean a church. If it is a church, then “her children” would be the people of the church. Also in verse 5.
  3. 2 John 1:1 truth The truth or “Good News” about Jesus Christ that joins all believers together.
  4. 2 John 1:8 we Some Greek copies have “you.”
  5. 2 John 1:13 sister Sister of the “lady” in verse 1. This might be another woman or another church.

1 The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;

2 For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.

3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.

9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:

11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

12 Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.

13 The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen.

Walk According to His Commandments

1 ( A ) The elder to the ( B ) chosen ( C ) lady and her children, whom I ( D ) love in truth; and not only I, but also all who ( E ) know the truth, 2 ( F ) because of the truth which remains ( G ) in us and will be ( H ) with us forever: 3 ( I ) Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

4 ( J ) I was overjoyed to find some of your children walking in truth, just as we have received a commandment to do from the Father. 5 Now I ask you, lady, ( K ) not as though I were writing to you a new commandment, but the one which we have had ( L ) from the beginning, that we ( M ) love one another. 6 And ( N ) this is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, ( O ) just as you have heard ( P ) from the beginning, that you are to walk in it.

7 For ( Q ) many deceivers have ( R ) gone out into the world, those who ( S ) do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is ( T ) the deceiver and the ( U ) antichrist. 8 ( V ) Watch yourselves, ( W ) that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward. 9 [ a ] Anyone who [ b ] goes too far and ( X ) does not remain in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who remains in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, ( Y ) do not receive him into your house, and do not [ c ] give him a greeting; 11 for the one who [ d ] gives him a greeting [ e ] ( Z ) participates in his evil deeds.

12 ( AA ) Though I have many things to write to you, I do not want to do so with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak [ f ] face to face, so that [ g ] your ( AB ) joy may be made complete.

13 The children of your ( AC ) chosen sister greet you.

1 The elder, ( A )

To the lady chosen by God ( B ) and to her children, whom I love in the truth ( C ) —and not I only, but also all who know the truth ( D ) 2 because of the truth, ( E ) which lives in us ( F ) and will be with us forever:

3 Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, ( G ) the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love.

4 It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, ( H ) just as the Father commanded us. 5 And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. ( I ) I ask that we love one another. 6 And this is love: ( J ) that we walk in obedience to his commands. ( K ) As you have heard from the beginning, ( L ) his command is that you walk in love.

7 I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ ( M ) as coming in the flesh, ( N ) have gone out into the world. ( O ) Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist. ( P ) 8 Watch out that you do not lose what we [ a ] have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully. ( Q ) 9 Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ ( R ) does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. ( S ) 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them. ( T ) 11 Anyone who welcomes them shares ( U ) in their wicked work.

12 I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face, ( V ) so that our joy may be complete. ( W )

13 The children of your sister, who is chosen by God, ( X ) send their greetings.
