2 chronicles 5

5 Solomon finished all the work for the Lord 's temple. Then he brought into it all the holy things that belonged to his father, David. He stored all the valuable things in a safe place in God's temple. They included silver things and gold things.

Solomon brings the Covenant Box to the temple

2 Then Solomon told all the leaders of Israel to come to him in Jerusalem. They were all the leaders of the Israelite tribes and families. He wanted them to bring the Lord 's Covenant Box from Mount Zion, the City of David, to put it in the temple. [ a ] 3 So all the Israelite leaders came together to meet with King Solomon. This happened during the Festival of Huts in the seventh month of the year.

4 When all Israel's leaders had arrived, the Levites lifted up the Covenant Box. 5 The priests and the other Levites carried the Covenant Box, the Tent of Meeting and all the holy things that were in the tent. 6 King Solomon and all the Israelites who were with him walked in front of the Covenant Box. They offered many sheep and bulls as sacrifices. There were more animals than anyone could count.

7 Then the priests brought the Lord 's Covenant Box to its proper place in the inside room of the temple. That was the Most Holy Place. They put it under the wings of the cherubs. 8 The wings of the cherubs touched each other above the place where the Covenant Box was. The cherubs covered the Covenant Box and the poles that the Levites used to carry it. 9 The poles in the Covenant Box were very long. The priests could see their ends from the Holy Place, if they stood in front of the Most Holy Place. But nobody could see the poles from outside the temple. And they are still there today. 10 There was nothing in the Covenant Box, except the two flat pieces of stone that Moses had put there at Sinai mountain. That was where the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites after they came out from Egypt. [ b ]

The priests sing to praise the Lord

11 Then the priests came out of the Holy Place. All the different groups of priests who were there had made themselves clean to serve God. 12 The Levites who were musicians stood on the east side of the altar. They were Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun and their sons and their relatives. They wore clothes made of linen. They made music with cymbals, harps and lyres. There were also 120 priests who made music with trumpets. 13 All these musicians made nice music together. They joined together to praise the Lord and to thank him. The singers sang loudly to the music of the trumpets, the cymbals and the other musical instruments. They loudly sang these words to praise the Lord :

‘He is good!
His faithful love continues for ever!’

Then a cloud filled the Lord 's temple. 14 The priests could not do their work to serve the Lord , because of the cloud. The bright glory of the Lord filled his temple.

Footnotes

  1. 5:2 Before they built the temple, King David had put the Covenant Box in a special tent.
  2. 5:10 See Deuteronomy 10:5 ; 1 Kings 8:9 .

5 When all the work was completed on the Lord ’s Temple, Solomon brought in everything his father David had set aside for the Temple. Solomon put all the furniture and all the things made of silver and gold into the storage rooms in God’s Temple.

The Holy Box Carried Into the Temple

2 Solomon commanded the elders of Israel, the leaders of the tribes, and the heads of families to meet together in Jerusalem. He did this so that they could bring the Box of the Lord ’s Agreement up to the Temple from the City of David, that is, Zion. 3 All the men of Israel met together before King Solomon during the special festival [ a ] in the seventh month of the year.

4 When all the elders of Israel arrived, the Levites [ b ] lifted the Box of the Agreement 5 and carried it up to the Temple. The priests and the Levites [ c ] also brought the Meeting Tent and all the holy things that were in it to the Temple in Jerusalem. 6 Then King Solomon and all the Israelites met in front of the Box of the Agreement to offer sheep and bulls as sacrifices. There were so many offerings that no one could count them. 7 Then the priests carried the Box of the Lord ’s Agreement to the place that was prepared for it in the Most Holy Place inside the Temple. They put the Box of the Agreement under the wings of the Cherub angels. 8 The Cherub angels stood with their wings spread over the Box of the Agreement and the poles that were used to carry it. 9 The poles are still there today. They were too long for the Most Holy Place, so their ends could be seen by anyone standing in the Holy Place, although no one outside could see them. 10 The only things inside the Holy Box are the two tablets that Moses put there at Mt. Horeb. This is where the Lord made his agreement with the Israelites after they came out of Egypt.

11 All the priests who were there did the ceremony to make themselves holy. Then, as they came out of the Holy Place, they stood together, but not in their special groups. 12 The Levite singers stood at the east side of the altar. All the singing groups of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun were there. And their sons and relatives were there. The Levite singers were dressed in white linen. They had cymbals, lyres, and harps. There were 120 priests there with the Levite singers. The 120 priests blew trumpets. 13 Those who blew the trumpets and those who sang were like one person. They made one sound when they praised and thanked the Lord . They made a loud noise with the trumpets, cymbals, and instruments of music. They praised the Lord , singing,

“The Lord is good.
His faithful love will last forever.”

Then the Lord ’s Temple was filled with a cloud. 14 The priests could not continue to serve because of the cloud, because the Glory of the Lord filled the Temple.

  1. 2 Chronicles 5:3 the special festival That is, the Festival of Shelters. See “ Festival of Shelters ” in the Word List.
  2. 2 Chronicles 5:4 Levites Or “priests from the tribe of Levi.”
  3. 2 Chronicles 5:5 The priests and the Levites Or “The priests from the tribe of Levi.”

5 Thus all the work that Solomon made for the house of the Lord was finished: and Solomon brought in all the things that David his father had dedicated; and the silver, and the gold, and all the instruments, put he among the treasures of the house of God.

2 Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, and all the heads of the tribes, the chief of the fathers of the children of Israel, unto Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of the city of David, which is Zion.

3 Wherefore all the men of Israel assembled themselves unto the king in the feast which was in the seventh month.

4 And all the elders of Israel came; and the Levites took up the ark.

5 And they brought up the ark, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and all the holy vessels that were in the tabernacle, these did the priests and the Levites bring up.

6 Also king Solomon, and all the congregation of Israel that were assembled unto him before the ark, sacrificed sheep and oxen, which could not be told nor numbered for multitude.

7 And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the Lord unto his place, to the oracle of the house, into the most holy place, even under the wings of the cherubims:

8 For the cherubims spread forth their wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubims covered the ark and the staves thereof above.

9 And they drew out the staves of the ark, that the ends of the staves were seen from the ark before the oracle; but they were not seen without. And there it is unto this day.

10 There was nothing in the ark save the two tables which Moses put therein at Horeb, when the Lord made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of Egypt.

11 And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place: (for all the priests that were present were sanctified, and did not then wait by course:

12 Also the Levites which were the singers, all of them of Asaph, of Heman, of Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, being arrayed in white linen, having cymbals and psalteries and harps, stood at the east end of the altar, and with them an hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets:)

13 It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord ; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the Lord , saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the Lord ;

14 So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of God.

The Ark Is Brought into the Temple

5 ( A ) So all the work that Solomon performed for the house of the Lord was finished. And Solomon brought in the [ a ] ( B ) things that his father David had dedicated, the silver, the gold, and all the utensils, and he put them in the treasuries of the house of God.

2 ( C ) Then Solomon assembled at Jerusalem the elders of Israel, all the heads of the tribes, and the leaders of the fathers’ households of the sons of Israel, ( D ) to bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord up from the city of David, which is Zion. 3 ( E ) All the men of Israel assembled themselves before the king at ( F ) the feast, that is in the seventh month. 4 Then all the elders of Israel came, and ( G ) the Levites picked up the ark. 5 They brought up the ark, the tent of meeting, and all the holy utensils that were in the tent. The Levitical priests brought them up. 6 And King Solomon and all the congregation of Israel who had assembled with him before the ark were sacrificing [ b ] so many sheep and oxen that they could not be counted or numbered. 7 Then the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place, into the inner sanctuary of the house, to the Most Holy Place, under the wings of the cherubim. 8 For the cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark, so that the cherubim made a covering over the ark and its [ c ] poles. 9 The poles were so long that ( H ) the ends of the poles of the ark could be seen in front of the inner sanctuary, but they could not be seen outside; and [ d ] they are there to this day. 10 ( I ) There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets which Moses put there at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the sons of Israel, when they came out of Egypt.

The Glory of God Fills the Temple

11 When the priests came out from the holy place (for all the priests who were present had sanctified themselves, without regard ( J ) to divisions), 12 and all the Levitical singers, ( K ) Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun, and their sons and kinsmen, clothed in fine linen, ( L ) with cymbals, harps, and lyres, standing east of the altar, and with them 120 priests ( M ) blowing trumpets 13 in unison when the trumpeters and the singers were to make themselves heard with one voice to praise and to glorify the Lord , and when they raised their voices ( N ) accompanied by trumpets, cymbals, and other musical instruments, and when they praised the Lord saying , “ ( O ) He indeed is good for His [ e ] kindness is everlasting,” then the house, the house of the Lord , was filled with a cloud, 14 so that the priests could not rise to minister because of the cloud, for ( P ) the glory of the Lord filled the house of God.

5 When all the work Solomon had done for the temple of the Lord was finished, ( A ) he brought in the things his father David had dedicated ( B ) —the silver and gold and all the furnishings—and he placed them in the treasuries of God’s temple.

The Ark Brought to the Temple ( C )

2 Then Solomon summoned to Jerusalem the elders of Israel, all the heads of the tribes and the chiefs of the Israelite families, to bring up the ark ( D ) of the Lord ’s covenant from Zion, the City of David. 3 And all the Israelites ( E ) came together to the king at the time of the festival in the seventh month.

4 When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the Levites took up the ark, 5 and they brought up the ark and the tent of meeting and all the sacred furnishings in it. The Levitical priests ( F ) carried them up; 6 and King Solomon and the entire assembly of Israel that had gathered about him were before the ark, sacrificing so many sheep and cattle that they could not be recorded or counted.

7 The priests then brought the ark ( G ) of the Lord ’s covenant to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Most Holy Place, and put it beneath the wings of the cherubim. 8 The cherubim ( H ) spread their wings over the place of the ark and covered the ark and its carrying poles. 9 These poles were so long that their ends, extending from the ark, could be seen from in front of the inner sanctuary, but not from outside the Holy Place; and they are still there today. 10 There was nothing in the ark except ( I ) the two tablets ( J ) that Moses had placed in it at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites after they came out of Egypt.

11 The priests then withdrew from the Holy Place. All the priests who were there had consecrated themselves, regardless of their divisions. ( K ) 12 All the Levites who were musicians ( L ) —Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun and their sons and relatives—stood on the east side of the altar, dressed in fine linen and playing cymbals, harps and lyres. They were accompanied by 120 priests sounding trumpets. ( M ) 13 The trumpeters and musicians joined in unison to give praise and thanks to the Lord . Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, the singers raised their voices in praise to the Lord and sang:

“He is good;
his love endures forever.” ( N )

Then the temple of the Lord was filled with the cloud, ( O ) 14 and the priests could not perform ( P ) their service because of the cloud, ( Q ) for the glory ( R ) of the Lord filled the temple of God.
