The Lord appears again to Solomon

9 Solomon had finished building the Lord 's temple and the king's palace. He had built everything that he had wanted to build. 2 Then the Lord appeared to Solomon a second time, as he had appeared to him at Gibeon. [ a ] 3 The Lord said to Solomon,

‘I have heard your prayer and how you have asked me to help you. I have made this temple that you have built a special place for me. People will worship me there for ever. I will always be there to watch over it.

4 You must continue to serve me honestly and obey me, as your father David did. Do everything that I have commanded you to do. Obey my rules and my laws.

5 If you serve me truly, I will cause one of your descendants to rule over Israel as king for all time. That is what I promised to your father David when I said, “There will always be someone from your family to rule Israel as king.” [ b ] 6 But if you or your descendants turn away from me, I will punish your people. I will do that if you do not obey the laws and rules that I have given to you. I will do it if you choose to serve and to worship other gods. 7 Then I will remove the Israelite people from the land that I have given to them. I will turn away from this temple that I have made a special place for people to worship me. People from all the other nations will insult the Israelites and they will laugh at them. 8 This temple will became a heap of stones. Everyone who sees it will be very surprised. They will laugh about it! They will ask, “Why has the Lord destroyed this land and this temple?” 9 People will answer, “He has done it because they have turned away from the Lord their God. He brought their ancestors out of Egypt. But they have chosen to worship other gods and to serve them. That is why the Lord has caused this trouble to happen to them.” ’

Other things that Solomon did

10 Solomon was building the Lord 's temple and the king's palace for 20 years. 11 After this, he gave 20 towns in Galilee to Hiram, the king of Tyre. Solomon did this because Hiram had given him all that he needed for the work. Hiram had given him cedar wood, pine wood and gold. 12 So Hiram left Tyre and he went to Galilee, to see the towns that Solomon had given to him. But Hiram was not happy with them. 13 He said to Solomon, ‘My friend, you have given me some useless towns!’ Hiram called that region ‘Kabul Land’. It still has that name today. [ c ] 14 Hiram had sent to King Solomon about 4,000 kilograms of gold.

15 Solomon made people work on the buildings for him. This is how he used them to build the Lord 's temple, the king's palace, the Millo and the wall around Jerusalem. They also did work on the towns called Hazor, Megiddo and Gezer. 16 Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, had attacked Gezer and he had taken it. He had destroyed it with fire. He killed the Canaanites who lived there. [ d ] Then he gave it as a gift to his daughter, when she married Solomon. 17 So Solomon built Gezer again. He also built Lower Beth-Horon, 18 Baalath and Tadmor, which were towns in the wilderness of Judah. 19 Solomon also made strong the cities where he stored things and the cities where he kept his chariots and horses. He built everything that he wanted to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon and everywhere in his kingdom.

20 Solomon only made people who were not Israelites do the hard work for him. They were Canaanite people who still lived in the land after the Israelites took it for themselves. They were Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. 21 The Israelites had not been able to remove all of these people, so their descendants remained in the land. So Solomon made them do hard work as his slaves. They are still slaves of the Israelites today. 22 But Solomon did not make any of the Israelites do the hard work. Instead, they served him as his soldiers, government officers and army officers. Some of the soldiers drove chariots and some were leaders of the chariot drivers. 23 There were also officers who had authority over the slaves who did the work. There were 550 officers who led the work.

24 Solomon had built a palace for his wife, Pharaoh's daughter. When the palace was ready, she came up from the City of David. After that, Solomon built the Millo.

25 Three times every year Solomon offered burnt offerings and friendship offerings as sacrifices to the Lord . He did this on the altar that he had built for the Lord . With these offerings, he also burned incense to worship the Lord . So the temple became the place to worship the Lord .

26 King Solomon also built ships at Ezion-Geber. This place is near Elath in Edom, on the shore of the Red Sea. 27 Hiram had sailors who knew how to sail ships on the sea. He sent some of these men to work with Solomon's sailors. 28 They sailed to Ophir and they brought back about 14 tons of gold. They gave it to King Solomon.

  3. 9:13 ‘Kabul’ sounds like a Hebrew word that means ‘useless’. The towns were near Tyre.
  4. 9:16 The Canaanites were the people who lived in Israel's land before the Israelites came to live there.

God Comes to Solomon Again

9 So Solomon finished building the Lord ’s Temple and his own palace. Solomon built everything that he wanted to build. 2 Then the Lord appeared to Solomon again, just as he did at Gibeon. 3 The Lord said to him,

“I heard your prayer and what you asked me to do. You built this Temple, and I have made it a holy place. So I will be honored there forever. I will watch over it and think of it always. 4 You must serve me with a pure and honest heart, just as your father David did. You must obey my laws and do everything that I commanded you. 5 If you do, I will make sure that your family will always rule Israel, just as I promised your father David when I told him that Israel would always be ruled by one of his descendants.

6-7 “But if you or your children stop following me, and don’t obey the laws and commands that I have given you, and if you serve and worship other gods, I will force Israel to leave the land that I have given to them. Israel will be an example to other people. Other people will make jokes about Israel. I made the Temple holy. It is the place where people honor me. But I will tear it down. 8 This Temple will be destroyed. Everyone who sees it will be amazed. They will ask, ‘Why did the Lord do this terrible thing to this land and to this temple?’ 9 People will say, ‘This happened because they left the Lord their God. He brought their ancestors out of Egypt, but they decided to follow other gods. They worshiped and served those gods. That is why the Lord caused all these bad things to happen to them.’”

10 It took 20 years for King Solomon to build the Lord ’s Temple and the king’s palace. 11 Hiram supplied Solomon with all the cedar, pine and gold that he wanted, so Solomon gave him 20 cities in Galilee. 12 So Hiram traveled from Tyre to see the cities that Solomon had given him. But Hiram was not pleased when he saw them. 13 King Hiram said, “What are these towns that you have given me, my brother?” King Hiram named that land the Land of Cabul. [ a ] And that area is still called Cabul today. 14 Hiram had sent King Solomon about 9000 pounds [ b ] of gold to use in building the Temple.

15 King Solomon forced slaves to work for him to build the Temple and his palace. Then he used these slaves to build many other things. He built the Millo and the city wall around Jerusalem. Then he rebuilt the cities of Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer.

16 In the past the king of Egypt had fought against the city of Gezer and burned it. He killed the Canaanites who lived there. When Solomon married Pharaoh’s daughter, Pharaoh gave him that city as a wedding present. 17 Solomon rebuilt Gezer and the city of Lower Beth Horon. 18 He also built the cities of Baalath and Tamar in the Judean desert. 19 He also built cities where he could store grain, and he built places for his chariots and his horses. King Solomon also built whatever he wanted in Jerusalem, Lebanon, and all the places he ruled.

20 There were people left in the land who were not Israelites. There were Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. 21 The Israelites had not been able to destroy them, but Solomon forced them to work for him as slaves. They are still slaves today. 22 Solomon did not force any Israelites to be his slaves. The Israelites were soldiers, government officials, officers, captains, and chariot commanders and drivers. 23 There were 550 supervisors over Solomon’s projects. They supervised the men who did the work.

24 Pharaoh’s daughter moved from the City of David to the palace that Solomon had built for her. Then he built the Millo.

25 Three times each year Solomon offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings on the altar that he built for the Lord . King Solomon also burned incense before the Lord and supplied what was needed for the Temple.

26 King Solomon also built ships at Ezion Geber. This town is near Elath on the shore of the Red Sea, in the land of Edom. 27 King Hiram had some skilled sailors who knew the sea well. He sent them to serve in Solomon’s navy and work with Solomon’s men. 28 Solomon’s ships went to Ophir and brought back about 16 tons [ c ] of gold for him.

Footnotes

  1. 1 Kings 9:13 Cabul This name is like the Hebrew word meaning “worthless.”
  2. 1 Kings 9:14 9000 pounds Literally, “120 talents” (4140 kg).
  3. 1 Kings 9:28 16 tons Literally, “420 talents” (14,490 kg).

9 And it came to pass, when Solomon had finished the building of the house of the Lord , and the king's house, and all Solomon's desire which he was pleased to do,

2 That the Lord appeared to Solomon the second time, as he had appeared unto him at Gibeon.

3 And the Lord said unto him, I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made before me: I have hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.

4 And if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my statutes and my judgments:

5 Then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel.

6 But if ye shall at all turn from following me, ye or your children, and will not keep my commandments and my statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods, and worship them:

7 Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people:

8 And at this house, which is high, every one that passeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss; and they shall say, Why hath the Lord done thus unto this land, and to this house?

9 And they shall answer, Because they forsook the Lord their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have taken hold upon other gods, and have worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath the Lord brought upon them all this evil.

10 And it came to pass at the end of twenty years, when Solomon had built the two houses, the house of the Lord , and the king's house,

11 (Now Hiram the king of Tyre had furnished Solomon with cedar trees and fir trees, and with gold, according to all his desire,) that then king Solomon gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee.

12 And Hiram came out from Tyre to see the cities which Solomon had given him; and they pleased him not.

13 And he said, What cities are these which thou hast given me, my brother? And he called them the land of Cabul unto this day.

14 And Hiram sent to the king sixscore talents of gold.

15 And this is the reason of the levy which king Solomon raised; for to build the house of the Lord , and his own house, and Millo, and the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and Megiddo, and Gezer.

16 For Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up, and taken Gezer, and burnt it with fire, and slain the Canaanites that dwelt in the city, and given it for a present unto his daughter, Solomon's wife.

17 And Solomon built Gezer, and Bethhoron the nether,

18 And Baalath, and Tadmor in the wilderness, in the land,

19 And all the cities of store that Solomon had, and cities for his chariots, and cities for his horsemen, and that which Solomon desired to build in Jerusalem, and in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion.

20 And all the people that were left of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, which were not of the children of Israel,

21 Their children that were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel also were not able utterly to destroy, upon those did Solomon levy a tribute of bondservice unto this day.

22 But of the children of Israel did Solomon make no bondmen: but they were men of war, and his servants, and his princes, and his captains, and rulers of his chariots, and his horsemen.

23 These were the chief of the officers that were over Solomon's work, five hundred and fifty, which bare rule over the people that wrought in the work.

24 But Pharaoh's daughter came up out of the city of David unto her house which Solomon had built for her: then did he build Millo.

25 And three times in a year did Solomon offer burnt offerings and peace offerings upon the altar which he built unto the Lord , and he burnt incense upon the altar that was before the Lord . So he finished the house.

26 And king Solomon made a navy of ships in Eziongeber, which is beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red sea, in the land of Edom.

27 And Hiram sent in the navy his servants, shipmen that had knowledge of the sea, with the servants of Solomon.

28 And they came to Ophir, and fetched from thence gold, four hundred and twenty talents, and brought it to king Solomon.

God’s Promise and Warning

9 ( A ) Now it came about when Solomon had finished building the house of the Lord and ( B ) the king’s house, and ( C ) all [ a ] that Solomon desired to do, 2 that ( D ) the Lord appeared to Solomon a second time, as He had appeared to him at Gibeon. 3 And the Lord said to him, “ ( E ) I have heard your prayer and your plea which you have offered before Me; I have consecrated this house which you have built, ( F ) by putting My name there forever, and ( G ) My eyes and My heart will be there [ b ] always. 4 As for you, ( H ) if you walk before Me as your father David walked, in integrity of heart and honesty, acting in accordance with everything that I have commanded you, and if you keep My statutes and My ordinances, 5 then ( I ) I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever, just as I [ c ] promised to your father David, saying, ‘ [ d ] You shall not be deprived of a man on the throne of Israel.’

6 ( J ) But if you or your sons indeed turn away from following Me, and do not keep My commandments and My statutes which I have placed before you, but you go and serve other gods and worship them, 7 ( K ) then I will cut Israel off from the land which I have given them, and ( L ) the house which I have consecrated for My name, I will [ e ] expel from My sight. So ( M ) Israel will become a saying and an object of derision among all peoples. 8 And this house will become ( N ) a heap of ruins; everyone who passes by it will be appalled and [ f ] hiss and say, ‘ ( O ) Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and this house?’ 9 And they will say, ‘ ( P ) Because they abandoned the Lord their God, who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and they [ g ] adopted other gods and worshiped and served them, for that reason the Lord has brought all this adversity on them.’”

Cities Given to Hiram

10 ( Q ) Now it came about ( R ) at the end of twenty years in which Solomon had built the two houses, the house of the Lord and the king’s house 11 (Hiram king of Tyre had supplied Solomon with cedar and juniper timber and gold, [ h ] satisfying all his desire), that King Solomon then gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee. 12 So Hiram left Tyre to see the cities which Solomon had given him, and they [ i ] did not please him. 13 And he said, “What are these cities which you have given me, my brother?” So [ j ] they have been called the land of [ k ] ( S ) Cabul to this day. 14 ( T ) And Hiram sent to the king [ l ] 120 talents of gold.

15 Now this is the account of the forced labor which King Solomon ( U ) conscripted to build the house of the Lord , his own house, the [ m ] ( V ) Millo, the wall of Jerusalem, ( W ) Hazor, ( X ) Megiddo, and ( Y ) Gezer. 16 For Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up and overthrown Gezer and burned it with fire, and killed the ( Z ) Canaanites who lived in the city; and he had ( AA ) given it as a dowry to his daughter, Solomon’s wife. 17 So Solomon rebuilt Gezer and the lower ( AB ) Beth-horon, 18 and ( AC ) Baalath and Tamar in the wilderness, in the land of Judah , 19 and all the storage cities which Solomon had, that is, ( AD ) the cities for [ n ] his chariots and the cities for [ o ] ( AE ) his horsemen, and [ p ] ( AF ) everything that it pleased Solomon to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and in all the land [ q ] under his rule. 20 As for all the people who were left of the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, who were not of the sons of Israel, 21 ( AG ) their descendants who were left after them in the land, ( AH ) whom the sons of Israel were unable to completely eliminate, ( AI ) from them Solomon conscripted ( AJ ) forced laborers, as they are to this day. 22 But Solomon ( AK ) did not make slaves of the sons of Israel; for they were men of war, his servants, his commanders, his charioteers, his chariot commanders, and his horsemen.

23 These were the [ r ] ( AL ) chief officers who were in charge of Solomon’s work, 550, ( AM ) who ruled over the people doing the work.

24 As soon as ( AN ) Pharaoh’s daughter came up from the city of David to her house which Solomon had built for her, ( AO ) he then built the Millo.

25 Now ( AP ) three times a year Solomon offered burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar which he had built for the Lord , burning incense with them on the altar which was before the Lord . So he finished the house.

26 King Solomon also built a ( AQ ) fleet of ships in ( AR ) Ezion-geber, which is near Eloth on the shore of the [ s ] Red Sea, in the land of Edom. 27 ( AS ) And Hiram sent his servants with the fleet, sailors who knew the sea, along with the servants of Solomon. 28 And they went to ( AT ) Ophir and received [ t ] 420 talents of gold from there, and brought it to King Solomon.

The Lord Appears to Solomon ( A )

9 When Solomon had finished ( B ) building the temple of the Lord and the royal palace, and had achieved all he had desired to do, 2 the Lord appeared ( C ) to him a second time, as he had appeared to him at Gibeon. 3 The Lord said to him:

“I have heard ( D ) the prayer and plea you have made before me; I have consecrated this temple, which you have built, by putting my Name ( E ) there forever. My eyes ( F ) and my heart will always be there.

4 “As for you, if you walk before me faithfully with integrity of heart ( G ) and uprightness, as David ( H ) your father did, and do all I command and observe my decrees and laws, ( I ) 5 I will establish ( J ) your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised David your father when I said, ‘You shall never fail ( K ) to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’

6 “But if you [ a ] or your descendants turn away ( L ) from me and do not observe the commands and decrees I have given you [ b ] and go off to serve other gods ( M ) and worship them, 7 then I will cut off Israel from the land ( N ) I have given them and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name. ( O ) Israel will then become a byword ( P ) and an object of ridicule ( Q ) among all peoples. 8 This temple will become a heap of rubble. All [ c ] who pass by will be appalled ( R ) and will scoff and say, ‘Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’ ( S ) 9 People will answer, ( T ) ‘Because they have forsaken ( U ) the Lord their God, who brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—that is why the Lord brought all this disaster ( V ) on them.’”

Solomon’s Other Activities ( W )

10 At the end of twenty years, during which Solomon built these two buildings—the temple of the Lord and the royal palace— 11 King Solomon gave twenty towns in Galilee to Hiram king of Tyre, because Hiram had supplied him with all the cedar and juniper and gold ( X ) he wanted. 12 But when Hiram went from Tyre to see the towns that Solomon had given him, he was not pleased with them. 13 “What kind of towns are these you have given me, my brother?” he asked. And he called them the Land of Kabul, [ d ] ( Y ) a name they have to this day. 14 Now Hiram had sent to the king 120 talents [ e ] of gold. ( Z )

15 Here is the account of the forced labor King Solomon conscripted ( AA ) to build the Lord ’s temple, his own palace, the terraces, [ f ] ( AB ) the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, ( AC ) Megiddo and Gezer. ( AD ) 16 (Pharaoh king of Egypt had attacked and captured Gezer. He had set it on fire. He killed its Canaanite inhabitants and then gave it as a wedding gift to his daughter, ( AE ) Solomon’s wife. 17 And Solomon rebuilt Gezer.) He built up Lower Beth Horon, ( AF ) 18 Baalath, ( AG ) and Tadmor [ g ] in the desert, within his land, 19 as well as all his store cities ( AH ) and the towns for his chariots ( AI ) and for his horses [ h ] —whatever he desired to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon and throughout all the territory he ruled.

20 There were still people left from the Amorites, Hittites, ( AJ ) Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites ( AK ) (these peoples were not Israelites). 21 Solomon conscripted the descendants ( AL ) of all these peoples remaining in the land—whom the Israelites could not exterminate [ i ] ( AM ) —to serve as slave labor, ( AN ) as it is to this day. 22 But Solomon did not make slaves ( AO ) of any of the Israelites; they were his fighting men, his government officials, his officers, his captains, and the commanders of his chariots and charioteers. 23 They were also the chief officials ( AP ) in charge of Solomon’s projects—550 officials supervising those who did the work.

24 After Pharaoh’s daughter ( AQ ) had come up from the City of David to the palace Solomon had built for her, he constructed the terraces. ( AR )

25 Three ( AS ) times a year Solomon sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings on the altar he had built for the Lord , burning incense before the Lord along with them, and so fulfilled the temple obligations.

26 King Solomon also built ships ( AT ) at Ezion Geber, ( AU ) which is near Elath ( AV ) in Edom, on the shore of the Red Sea. [ j ] 27 And Hiram sent his men—sailors ( AW ) who knew the sea—to serve in the fleet with Solomon’s men. 28 They sailed to Ophir ( AX ) and brought back 420 talents [ k ] of gold, ( AY ) which they delivered to King Solomon.
